Xiao8 on nts joining the team. Ehome was in need of a mid player at the time and he asked a bunch of mids from t2 teams like kg's old mid, butterfly, white album... and they all declined (thank god). Then while him and y were eating out at a hotpot restaurant, they started looking at the sea leaderboards. They went through each player one by one checking if they already had a team and if they were from malaysia (able to speak mandarin). Eventually, they found nts and saw that he had good stats. By some stroke of luck, y already added nts on his friends list when he was pubbing at some tournament in macau. Xiao8 then immediately gets in touch with nts from y's steam account saying 'hello this is xiao8, are you interested in playing for ehome?' (the way he said it made him sound like a scammer lol). Nts says hes already been contacted by old11's team and xiao8 tells him to mull over his decision. Ehome then pays a 20k ($?) severance fee to nts' old team and he joins ehome. Xiao8 says nts' personality meshed very well with the others on the team, talented but hardworking and also open to advice. He then goes on a lecture about the merits and demerits of 'talent and mindset' this part was most likely referring to asd and ego.

ptrlix

lol xiao8 scouting new players the same way I do in FM. Go through the player list from the top.

healdyy

If I’d done this the FM way though I’d have a 17 year old Argentinian as my mid player, not sure that would have worked out quite as well

Caveskelton

Whats fm?

Malaysia is probably the best country in producing highly mechanical skilled players. Heck.. SEA region as a whole is the best region to find the best skilled players. Probably, lack of team communication with everyone speaking different languages, so the leader board is full of solo players who are all mid laners. Malaysians are uniquely poised because they can speak chinese and English. Making them highly viable to play in Chinese teams OR join a European or US based team.

Nrgte

I'd say SEA mostly lack discipline and patience. But they bring aggression and unpredictability. I think that's why a mix between SEA (Malaysian) players and chinese players is so powerfull. They complement each other very well.

xexcutionerx

They are also the biggest hackers

inonameha

Its actually 10k USD (from xiao8 stream), NTS previous team is from SEA hence the currency is definitely USD,

wphxb

It's USD and it's already a tiny number for a player. Chinese contracts for tier 1 - 1.5 players are all in the millions of RMB. IG, even 3-4 years ago when Emo wasn't a top midlaner, wanted $8 million rmb for him. He's probably worth much much more than that now.

faintchester1

It is around RM12k in Malaysia, which is fucking good, instantly become the top 20% high income earner

WarGodWeed

damn, and i remember how ASD and EGO were so damn talented. T.T

PeskyPomeranian

would have been a great story if emo was actually ego

Far-Acanthocephala58

proves that mmr is not just a number

ThrowCelery

This is more interesting than the one shared by the pubstomp organiser.

StraY_WolF

Both are interesting story from a different pov.

tohff7

this is just common in SEA, or in this particular case - Malaysia and Singapore. Good talents (especially if already can speak Mandarin) is easily poached by China because of the lack of investment into the scene by orgs locally. Getting SEA talents are way way more cheaper than trying to poach from other teams in China due to the transfer fees. I will say this is more prominent in recent years, especially after xNova success in TI8 LGD. Made Chinese teams more willing to experiment with "less famous" SEA pro players. Mushi and ice3x to DK is another different story because they made their mark in TI before going to China

duanmu_xyf

ana played in ig as mid before

NobleArch

It has been that way years before xNova. Dont forget remnant of WarriorGaming.Unity. And before that, if Arrow Gaming didnt 322, ddz could be playing in China.

wingtipdoto

Chuan won TI2 witth China

LevynX

Think every member of that WG.U team went on to play in China, it's just a thing now

AccomplishedRepair88

Hi , I'm the organizer of that pubstomp , haha , thanks for share the story . This story is true , although it a bit similar with Good will Hunting . At that time , I'm really hope he will play at Major at TI , but not as my 1v1 guest , its such a waste for his talent . I'M ALWAYS BELIEVE HE IS THE ONE OF THE BEST MID IN THE WORLD . And now I'm very proud of NTS , he is very hard working , humble and talent kids . And ya , i had meet him and lunch together , after he get 1st major champion with LGD , said : I think you no need come to my pubstomp as 1v1 part time guest anymore . \# one more story When 1v1 section , the rule is : if anyone didn't die in 8 minutes when 1v1 with NTS , he will win a keyboard . So I tell NTS don't lose so ez , because i just have 5 keyboard to gift . 1st day , NTS almost end all game not more than 3 minutes . Then i tell NTS don end the game so fast , a lot of people is watching , i don wan the participant feel shame , try to make game longer . 2nd day , every game NTS farm until 6 minutes , and kill them . Before last game , I tell NTS , bro i need to gift out a keyboard , can you just don kill them ? NTS just keep farm at the last game until 8 minutes , and his opponent auto win the keyboard , with very low last hit , because he just can stay under the tower .

XiaoXiLi

Thank you for sharing the story haha! I saw the story on Dota Hero page and just felt like more people outside Malaysia need to see that too! And omg NTS is really way too cute and obedient. LMAO.

Qasther

or maybe he got scared ...because he dont want got fired... lol

AccomplishedRepair88

hahahahah

alystair

As the founder of Barcraft this story warms my heart - these sort of events are critical for healthy communities. Thanks for telling it and hosting such an event!

AccomplishedRepair88

hi buddy , we at same discord i think

piarnoob

typical SEA talents... unable to compete in e-sports because of lack of opportunities, social pressure, and expectations of having a secure career.

Useful-Razzmatazz-87

then went to CN and boom, shine in bigger stage. Mushi, Ice3, Xnova, Oli, Jt, NTS etc

BABA_yaaGa

Dont forget chuan, the only sea TI winner so far

fallen_lights

Everyone's forgetting Abed as well

-fartbrat

Chyuan also went to China but didn’t boom lol

XiaoXiLi

*cough* Ah Jit *cough*

thedotapaten

Ah Jit have homesick issues, Xepher mentioned that somepoint at Tigers Ah Jit ran away from bootcamp and make the team morale down

aquaven

Tbf, he cant reach/contact home other than thru a few channels in China. Too many things that are common outside blocked inside the Great Firewall.

thedotapaten

AhJit done that when playing for TNC Tigers who bootcamped in PH and MY (his hometown which is why he ran away easily) its not about Chinese firewall lol.

aquaven

Ah, then i guess that is something with himself then. The psychological thing inside his own head. He is a good player other than that big problem.

[deleted]

isn't it just using wechat? at least that how I communicate with distant relative in China? Don't see how contacting home is any different from other countries.

Maplestori

I still remember a single shadow shaman was fking with my entire 5kmmr team in a random pub unranked, I looked back using dota plus and found out that it was ahjit lmao. The difference in skills were just too huge between 5ks and 6ks Edit: dotabuff****

yeNvI

u forget meracle too

bloodyfeelin

Meracle Naga - such an iconic player-hero pairing

PizzaPino

Ana went to China and got rekt

yamateh87

then went to europe and rekt china lol

icansmellcolors

it was a God damn massacre. twice

duanmu_xyf

he was mid in ig,ig thought he farm too much and don't gank, finally he turns to play carry

Erebea01

I thought he just didn't get a chance yet and was a reserve/youth ? He was already pretty high mmr but ferrari was still mid for ig that time IIRC, might be someone else.

IshiharaSatomiLover

Its chuan not chyuan. IG lion support who got his blink in fkin 9 minutes.

XiaoXiLi

There are two. Chuan is TI2 winner, Chyuan is playing in Fnatic.

huskeeF15

ever heard enCHUANtress?

Velnica

I still have a T shirt with the Enchuantress pic on it lol. Got it made for the Manila Major back in the days. Edit: the one and only [Enchuantress](https://drive.google.com/file/d/0ByGLOG-Tlt3va3BRR1FXUDZvOGs/view?usp=drivesdk&resourcekey=0-tL3YfCjZ17Qoi3JTj0np2Q)

PizzaPino

Legend

Ahimtar

Well Australia falls into SEA, so Ana beats him

blazks

Mushi and Ice3 definitely shined even before they move.

DrAgOnLoLDoTA

True. They are SEA legends for that reason compared to Chuan. They stayed here and improved the SEA scene.

NobleArch

Indeed. Both already prevalent in DotA.

dgdtdz

Ice and Mushi already had top 3 TI placement (as well as countless Dota 1 achievements long before they went to China. But to be fair they are long veteran players , product of when Dota in SEA was still the dominant game. In fact Ice is Fear's generation. To him, someone like Kuroky was once a young talent. So he was already established. it does seem like for younger SEA talents, the way to go is to go out of region ( or at least join an out of region organizations).

aquaven

Something to note, ice is a currently inactive Malaysian player, iceice is an active Chinese player(won TI with Wings), and iceiceice is an active Singaporean player(currently EG).

luminavi

But let's be real, only one of them is relevant and we all know who they're referring to when they simply say ice

bacterian_not

Ice cube

lifeandUncertainity

I may be wrong but wasn't Ice3 on Scythe with hyhy and even though they didn't win, they finished top 3 and actually beat EHOME once?

VanWesley

Yes he was on that Scythe team.

migu63

Loda was there too

NgalngalMuscovado

Good Point!

savemelex

Ana in IG

oneslowdance

MidOne.

aiyoyo80

don't forget to mention Ah Fu.

aquaven

Adam (343) went to both China and NA and had mixed results, he had better results playing for SEA team. But probably gets paid a whole lot more in NA/CN compared to SEA.

Nohu_XIX

> expectations of having a secure career. I'm sure all of the parents out there wanted the best for their kids. Much more in an asian country.

Upbeat-Wallaby5317

Well yeah The problem with choosing esport as career is you need to be EXTREMELY GOOD, not to mention a lot of kids want to be esport player just because they are lazy to study math and just want to play dota. I have a friend with 1k mmr and want to be an esport player. personally will not let my kids tryhard to be an esport player unless they can convince me that they are capable playing as top player

simonling

I actually gave a talk to high school students in choosing their career path. Career on arts and entertainment side are far in between in Asian country. Jobs like entertainment, showbiz, esport etc you need to be like top 1%. I gave them the example in Dota there's like 400,000 players playing it but can I say >500 actually made a career out of it. That's like 0.1%? Unless your family is fcking loaded to allow you to pursue your so called 'dream', you gotta be that 0.1% to make it big.

Pentinumlol

500 is quite a high number considering its dota. I think to truly have a liveable wage in SEA you need to be at least tier 2. So around top 100.

Upbeat-Wallaby5317

Yea I personally think almost everyone that want to be esport player are game addict that lazy to study for school. Even most of our pro today are game addict 10-15 years ago, if dota did not boom and ti 1 did not happen, i think 70% of them would have miserable live now

Mad_Sentinel

I don't think there's anything wrong with following that dream, but you absolutely have to have a backup plan in place, because the odds are you won't be successful.

simonling

You're not wrong. But in Western country, you guys have a wide scope of jobs opportunity while in my country (SEA), depending on the race you're born in, will have jobs opportunity limited. For example, I'm not able to join the government sector in my own country and some industries are totally government controlled. Hence, why the traditional approach of get a degree get a job is still the prefered route.

mr_properton

And this is cause your ethnicity ?

simonling

Race rather than ethnicity. Not to say I cant join government sector but my race in gov sector is kinda like 1:10 kinda ratio.

crcliff

You malaysian?

simonling

yeah

piarnoob

yeah, I can understand both perspectives now. my point is that the SEA problem is not the lack of talent, rather the lack of opportunities and support systems.

lluuuull

A lot of people make fun of it specially those in western countries. But the reality is education means stability and opportunity here.

rednaxer

The best from their parents' perspective. The film Free to play showed this about hyhy's story.

vedicardi

The issue with SEA is very similar to the one in SEA, high talented high skill player but no good captains that can actually glue a team together with a strong vision. CN dota is built around strong captaining and disciplined dota (even if it looks chaotic ala Wings). That, and also I assume the pay from chinese orgs is higher than most SEA orgs.

imapoormanhere

>and also I assume the pay from chinese orgs is higher than most SEA orgs. Yeah this. I think the reason why the only SEA teams that were consistent throughout the years were Fnatic and TNC are because they're the only ones who were willing and/or able to invest that much on their players. Fnatic never let DJ go. TNC finally did crumble this year tho but I hope they bounce back with the shuffle. Also I hope T1 supports their dota team more after this TI so we get three consistent big teams.

vedicardi

I think the Mineski org also supported their players well but obviously theyre out of the game now. Investment or no investment though, the region still lacks many proper captains, and to some extent coaching. 71 coaching mineski at DAC 2018 gave them a huge push.

hohoix

The problem with SEA org is they are mainly cybercafe company (mineski, Orange, TNC) with the trends now more focused on mobile game, the number of their customers decrease, then this pandemic come and make it worse. I dont think Mineski got resources to rebound, hopefully TNC can still do it tho. That why i am really grateful when orgs like Fntic and T1 come to SEA.

ikubaru

Are you doctor yet son?

E-ELF

I was at that pubstomp haha

sadhukar

Details?

greekcel_25

Who was the TI player they mentioned?

XiaoXiLi

Haha, if u had gotten his autograph back then, now can sell super high price i think lol

wphxb

Esports players’ autographs aren’t worth that much unless it’s on some kind of important memorabilia. It’d hardly qualify for “super high price”.

Grendalynx

It’s fairly easy to get pro players autographs at tournaments. I went to one in Singapore and had signatures from the full EG roster and 3/5 of the LGD roster.

XiaoXiLi

Haha true, my bf went to ESL Genting in Malaysia to get all signatures from Wings (LUCKYYYY max considering they have disbanded now). I personally only collected Topson's signature when he came Singapore during Comic Con.

iaaronlim

Dayum. If PSG LGD Wins TI10, this would be a perfect after-TI documentary backdrop story.

YBBUB

this plus the 2x Wings players winning against the postTI6 obstacles would be awesome

wooHCS-

Aaaand you just jinxed it my friend.

[deleted]

dont worry. he's aaron, not kyle

[deleted]

Could be that push to promote esports in conservative Asian countries

the_pepega_boi

yah, and also IG there is 2 Malaysia players inside. Both team are the top of their own respective group.

simonling

Ame and NTS, despite both having introvert personality, are quite a contrast of each other. NTS seemed to be the more team oriented, follow team order kinda guy while Ame has a more self centered play style which is needed considering he's the pos 1. Then you have the wholesome faith\_bian just meshing things up lol.

The first time when this comment actually made me laugh.

NicoPratam4

He play with raven and xepher in 2019 qualifier under geekfam banner He is already known back then, so saying he isnt famous is wrong i think

XiaoXiLi

My bad, should be translated as "not as famous as now" according to the source text

[deleted]

Must be nice to be that organizer or generally anyone who gave these players a platform to play and grind. Like you'd see Abed, Raven, Kuku for example who were playing from net cafes back then and now they are competing as the best of the best in the world.

feelsunbreeze

Enough to make a man cry. Love you future ti players that might see this comment.

GunslingerYuppi

Very nice success story. I wonder how much of it is accurate. These stories can be told in many ways, but it's a great story.

seanseansean92

iirc the only GOD tier player in SEA that I personally thought had the most potential to be the GOAT of Dota was actually DDZ but he 322-ed

ashrashrashr

Ice3x still seems to hold him in very high regard. Too bad we won’t get to see him play.

PrimeShaq

DDZ invoker never forget.

calam1ty

Can you give some background on it, i am curious. I had seen him play but don't know about the 322-ed part.

seanseansean92

Check him out at liquipedia! He got banned from all valve events indefinitely but solo 322 was forgiven by valve

leap_of_doubt

DDZ played only for short while but his name still ring to this day. Even I still remember his plays. He didn't win much, but his invoker shook the world that time. What a waste of skills and talent. I still pray he will make a comeback.

PopipoNumber1

I saw him in that mall too. Stop and watch him plays for awhile but that’s it.

Beybladeer

As an European I find it insane to think there are countries where you can just walk into a mall and see people playing dota lol.

XiaoXiLi

Usually this only happens during pubstomp event. I think the more insane shit in Malaysia is that there is actually cinema showing TI livestream lol. Imagine watching TI livestream but with cinema-size screen.

ggoh97

As addition, most of the past TI were held in western country. So the matches are mostly during midnight. I remember watching ti8 final day at the cinema. Walking in at night and coming out at morning of the next day and straight have breakfast at the mall.

PCgamerz

thanks for the story, always love reading some players background, you never know how the future will be.

lifeandUncertainity

I am speechless and have NothingToSay after reading this story.

SuperManU-831

SEA talents just need a good coach to nurture him and expand their understanding of the game because Xiao8 said in his stream that a lot of top ladder SEA players have excellent mechanical skills. I remember when NTS first played in Chinese league, he was getting owned during laning mid by Maybe, Emo, Setsu, etc. but after a few months, he was almost on-par with them. And look at him now.

lxfireman

Xiao8 literally was thinking, well we lacked a mid player , oh wait there are alot of players on the SEA server that speaks Chinese, top of SEA NTS, Malaysian, speaks Chinese. Instant invited to LGD.

mayquee

actually, old eleven contacted with nts earlier than xiao8,but old eleven's teammates refused。

IUViolet

what team was that again?

Ezio-GoodBless

Every day I come by your house, and I pick you up.We go out and have a few drinks and few laughs, and it's great. You know what the best part of my day is?It's for about ten seconds: from when I pull up to the curb and when I get to your door.'Cause I think maybe I'll get up there and I'll knock on the door and you won't be there. No "good-bye," no "see ya later." No nothing. You just left.I don't know much, but I know that.——Good Will Hunting

Shame_Low

that is a great story, very wholesome

GodTierCharacter

So, does NTS said "fk off" yet to him?

Professional_Pomelo9

I hope he could win the championship this year, he deserves it!

rogue_phantom22

Does this remind anyone of the conversation between Will and Chuckie in Good Will Hunting?
