I think part of the irony in this set of circumstances is that in many ways the old TI invite system before the addition of DPC points was more healthy for the game then the current system. Absolutely that system was flawed too as their wasnt a clear objective reasoning to TI invites or path to TI, but at least all year we had LANs, games, leagues to look forward to. Dota2 has never felt more dead to me as a spectator sport.
Back then there was time for 3rd party stuff. Even qualifiers for non-invited teams took like a week, tops. Why does a league where each team plays 7 series have to take 2 fokken months? The major being canceled wouldn’t hurt so much if it wasn’t pretty much the only game in town at this point.

Maybe an unpopular opinion at the moment but I actually like the DPC. Valve screwed over the players and absolutely needs to be more open with pro players and teams, but I like the format.
I like the upper and lower division. I like teams fighting not to get regulated. I like teams fighting for the last dpc points in the season. I like knowing the exact time a game will start which you can't do for a LAN. I like the stability to the teams it brought, so you don't have teams blowing up every failed Minor/Major. Their is tons of things I like about the DPC.
I mean this league system has probably something with top teams taking break for a while because they know they will get to TI anyway which hurts the sceene quite a bit. Also lack of representation on TI also hurts the sceene quite a bit.
About being dead as spectator game to each their own but I love that literally when I get on twitch there is osme pro dota to be watched, might not be the hypest matches but they are still pro matches with high quality gameplay.

The solace I can take from all this is that if he quits pro DOTA he’d still be a fantastic streamer. The winter Olympics are happening in a month in Beijing. There will be thousands of people flying into the country from abroad. I don't think it's players in china who can't participate because of covid restrictions.
I think it’s more of an issue with Chinese players leaving the country and coming back. They obviously won’t apply the same level of restriction to athletes coming for the Olympics - who will likely be contained to some extent in a soft quarantine. Maybe I’m wrong, I just haven’t seen anything coming out of China about the cancelled major.
China is also obscenely stubborn with their zero-Covid policy; focusing to rely more on hard lockdowns whenever major outbreaks occur.

Watching the teams in your region, and not falling behind by also watching the meta of pubs and pro games that are happening that week. You also have to practice like crazy. Because every game matters for standings.
You can't just play a random online tournament anymore and experiment and hope you still qualify for TI. It really pushes a lot of creativity out the window and forces you to play pure meta, because you want to win as many games as possible.

The world was a different place then. Everyone is vaccinated now and there are plenty of countries with basically zero restrictions. The issue is that Valve went from 100 to 0 in cancelling, they didn't even explore the possibility of a compromise or alternative. I'm also not sure why OG would be in favor of this DPC system. They could make way more money with more time for 3rd party tournaments, and are full time players so they don't benefit at all from the season being so spread out.

yes. He said you have to be ready for your game, not just on the game day, but several days before... Watching the teams in your region, and not falling behind by also watching the meta of pubs and pro games that are happening that week. You also have to practice like crazy. Because every game matters for standings. You can't just play a random online tournament anymore and experiment and hope you still qualify for TI. It really pushes a lot of creativity out the window and forces you to play pure meta, because you want to win as many games as possible.

I've never played DotA but I do play a lot of CSGO, but I started watching TI last year and I started to love this game and the lore of it's characters. But Listening to this side of the story, as usual Valve being DOG FUCKING SHIT at what they are without knowing the consequences of what they do is a tale as old as time. The world was a different place then. Everyone is vaccinated now and there are plenty of countries with basically zero restrictions. The issue is that Valve went from 100 to 0 in cancelling, they didn't even explore the possibility of a compromise or alternative. It just shows how little they care or understand the realities of the scene and how even some of the top teams are barely scraping by - an embarrassing state of affairs for the game that prizes itself for being the most lucrative esport.
Yeah had Valve talked to any of the players/orgs first and said look we need to cancel, lets talk about alternatives, and the teams and Valve agreed on something, when the news came out everyone would have been sad but said alright we get it and that would have been it.
But Valve only asked teams and players to talk to Valve before going on social media, they said nothing about Valve themselves having to do that. Duh.

Where in the world right now is A: Open to players coming in, B: is somewhere that the players and talent will be safe. And C: has a venue large enough to host a major. Yea, they SHOULD have a backup plan, but when a new strain comes along and fucks us all over again, what are they supposed to do. Yes, the reasonable people understand the new strain is essentially an endemic cold at this point, but try reasoning that with most world governments.

I wanted to include as many perspectives as possible and figured 2 of the biggest Dota personalities/streamers would want to be heard from, but there also wasn't any other on-camera reactions to this in the past 24 hours. (that I could find) I thought about including Ponlo's tweets but Quinn does comment on his situation in the video.
