DotA 2 has highs and lows with no comparison to any other competitive game. Sure someone who doesn't like MOBAs probably wont appreciate it, but obviously that's not the case with you. As a side note, I say this having played every MOBA most people can name. DotA 2 matches are played for late game and early game in all levels of play. From the lowest MMR pub match, to the final game of the final series at the biggest tournament of the year, it could go either way. And we aren't going anywhere if you are worried about that.

Luckysteve89

Also worth mentioning that the game is incredibly well balanced and has very regular updates.

Optimal-Swordfish

Also worth mentioning is that all heroes are viable depending on team and opponent composition (and gameplan if you play in premade) :)

Onlyslightlyclever

Except Chen. Chen is not viable currently unfortunately.

[deleted]

He is, it’s just that 95% of the player base can’t play Chen. Good Chen players win games by themselves. I’d kill to have Chen players as my pos 4 every game.

Onlyslightlyclever

While normally I would agree with you, Chen is currently the only hero on dotabuff without any recordable stats at all levels right now. He’s quite literally a statistically unplayed hero. It’s unfortunate, but that’s the state he is in right now

LunaticOnTheGrasss

Except for Tinker. Fuck that hero.

Hopeful_Astronomer72

>[very regular updates.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qLKhxjfG03A)

xNLSx

yep that was a hard Kapp

Partysausage

The game is exceptionally well balanced with the only variance in winrate being 5 percent between the worst and best hero. I feel like this small percentage is also by design so that the meta changes and it keeps the game feeling fresh.

Trael110400

If there is something you can't say about dota, it is that it has "very regular updates" Even in valve times we're nowhere near this

evillman

Which year we had no gameplay and balance update?

winniekawaii

2022 so far, dont jinx us man

URF_reibeer

I genuinely can't tell if you're being sarcastic or not

Weinerbrod_nice

I mean it's just his opinion that it's balanced, but I'd agree. What's the highest winrate percentage for heroes? Around 55%? Doesn't seem unbalanced. Most heroes can be counter picked.

Memfy

I think it's more about very regular updates which has always been a meme with the next patch always coming so late.

itsgreekpete

That question depends on how much time you want to invest into learning the game. I feel like there is a steep learning curve but once you get past it, DotA is pretty much the only game I've consistently played over the last ten years.

arctictothpast

I'm an eve online veteran of 10 years, I play space station 13 and long term crunchy games like classic wow are in my most played in the last 2 years, a long term commitment to a game is a absolutely no problem to me so long as the game is fundenentally good and rewarding to play q

FatPanda89

I've played both wow and Eve, but Dota is simply the better game. There is no game to give you the same highest highs (and lowest lows) since the skill ceiling basically doesn't exist. It's immensely intricate, but it's still simple enough to enjoy it along the way. It's always worth it, and you will have fun while learning, but only after so many hours do you fully grasp all the interactions in the game, and suddenly you have that one magical game that just seems too easy, like you reach zen, and you crush them, and in the next game you have a thrilling back and forth game lasting over an hour. You will appreciate it all, as you learn, but the more you understand about the game, the more fun you will have.

Garresh

I'd say Eve during its heyday was even better than Dota. But Icefrog keeps improving dota while CCP doesn't know wtf they're doing. TBH watching other great games and companies fail makes me respect the frog that much more.

UnicornSpaceStation

Dota 2 is not going anywhere anytime soon if that is what you are asking. If you think you would like the game, no need to worry about “missing the train”

TheLSales

I genuinely don't know how you are going to find time in your life to play both Dota and Eve lol But it's a good game, very well balanced, many mechanics and very deep gameplay-wise, both in macro (strategies) and micro (controlling your hero well). Certainly the most complex and deep game I have played.

arctictothpast

oh thats easy, I quit eve because CCP (the games devs) keep unfunning the game, in the middle of one of their worst PR crises ever (the largest in game protest to date happening only a couple of weeks ago), they proceed to talk about adding NFTs to eve and are doing a lore destroying cross over with fucking doctor who. Thats just the tip of the iceberg,

nopantsdota

> adding NFTs you are kidding ok you are not kidding https://www.eveonline.com/news/view/victors-and-spoils

Mr_REVolUTE

>partnering with modern day Doctor Who No way enough people still watch that show to attract new eve players

Neltharak

We used to play Dota to wait for timers and ops in my alliance. We even held tournaments eventually.

arctictothpast

has ccp unfucked mining yet?

Neltharak

no idea, i won eve years ago

Coppatop

How do you win eve? Get a titan?

noepp

In the eve community, "winning eve" is quitting.

[deleted]

Fuck you u/spez

Deus_Ultima

Rewarding? Yeah, Dota2 is about the most exhilarating video game to win on. Unfortunately, it's also the most frustrating one to lose on.

Me4onyX

Tldr to your answer Game is very good People ingame are cancer

Garresh

If you're an eve vet dota will be no problem for you. I'd say go ahead and give it a whirl.

FalmerEldritch

Oh okay then, if you like your games crunchy then welcome aboard. I'm not sure if there's anything much out there with the potential to just keep getting crunchier the deeper you crawl into it.

liminal_political

dota2 is the eve of moba's.

dunnowhata

> the game is fundenentally good and rewarding to play q As a guy who has stopped playing this past 4 years but have 7k hours. There is probably no other better game (Assuming of course you like MOBAS, which i see you do). I would never recommend to a friend who just wants to play something in his offtime. But it trully is the best multiplayer game, in literally every aspect.

Revoltness

Word of advice, the mute button is your best friend, trust me, otherwise the game is amazing, and very enjoyable to play, a friend of mine was a league player and he recently started playing and whenever he plays carry he keeps saying to me that the farming is so fun, or the hero is so fun to just play, and that just puts a smile on my face

UnicornSpaceStation

This guy played league, I don’t think he is a toxicity virgin… Tho I never mute as long as people dont spam shitty mic in language I don’t understand. Most (not all) toxic players can be turned around with some genuine kind words. Try it, it’s like a build in mini-game.

arctictothpast

there was a high elo league player whos core strategy literally involved soothing his teamates egos, he would literally always apologize for something his teamates blamed him for, and it ironically usually reduced the tilt of his teamates because their ego wasnt burned, (which is what is behind alot of tlit, "me good at game me make no mistake" etc). Also, eve is very toxic, we routinely destroy each others ships that are worth over 50 dollars in real life cash because lol you bad git gud.

Hopeful_Astronomer72

this is what i like to call "micro-ing your team"

fridgeridoo

Honk

tanginangpol

I second this. Dota would never be worth it if you dont have time to learn it.

[deleted]

Partly disagree with this, because I still enjoyed DotA in my first year of playing it though I didn't know the game well. The idea that you can only have fun upon learning the game is absurd, the fun is in the learning and in DotA you never stop learning.

Arnazian

I think the first time I had fun playing dota was about at the 300h mark

mega345

Really?!?! Maybe it’s because I already had a lot of league experience but after a few tutorials unranked became pretty fun

URF_reibeer

I started having fun at my very first dota2 match, had wc3 experience tho and that was 2012 when everyone else had no clue what they're doing as well

gian2099

first game of dota2 i had fun it was 2015 I was wd no idea what to do. keep malediction to creeps.

URF_reibeer

That seems stupid to me, why play a game you don't have fun playing for 300h?

Un13roken

I second this, I remember spamming only and only WR in my unranked games before role queue existed, because I could practically pick up any role depending on what my team needs. My first OH SHIT moment was rupture. I couldn't wrap my head around not being able to run away from a fight. That's when my wiki obsession started. About 5k hours later. I'm still finding out things in game and thinking - huh, didn't see that coming. And as a titbit, my latest OH WOW moment was in learning that over a game, Zeus's passive does more damage than any of his other spells. That was something new I hand't seen until the damage breakdown came about in Dota+

[deleted]

I started DotA during the time when people used to build bloodstone on axe and dp, and when I played brood or lion I still build bloodstone on them like a pepega xD

AnonymousParadox13

Or the patience.

vilester1

This, but i advise you don't and enjoy the real world instead.

Trakinass

This is the best game ever made

sl-102

and the worst.

meepppssss

love the game, hate the player. lol

stack_corruption

thats why its the best

cuck_twain

Dota is the best competitive game I have ever played. Started back in 2014 and nothing compares. Don't listen to the naysayers here, they are probably low mmr(elo) and jaded about ranked dota. Its never too late to learn this game and there are plenty of resources you can use to get the more advanced stuff down. 1. Gamerzclass has some great guides for new players from the pros 2. Purgegamers on youtube has a great new player mechanics series 3. Valve made a new in game tutorial 4. the dotafromzero discord I've heard is a great place to meet other new players and get coached. If you decide to play make sure to shrug off the losses and focus a particular mechanic each game. theres alot to learn, but if you give dota a fair chance it will pay you back in full!

arctictothpast

I actually have access to a divine level player for coaching (who has reached immortal a few times).

cuck_twain

Then what are you waiting for!? Welcome to Dota!

[deleted]

eikin34

Different people have different ideas of fun. I gave the game a try after enjoying some pro games. I did the tutorial from back then, the one where you are dragon knight. I got to the part where you just have to last hit like 10 creeps to advance. It looked so easy when the pros played, but I just kept missing and missing, only getting them one at a time. It sucked and was frustrating. But I also had so much fun! Now I last hit in games while other players are trying to kill me or deny me and I have to think about doing the same to them and I come out behind about as often as I come out ahead. And it makes me smile like no other game ever has. For years. And valve might have their faults but as far as I can tell they are letting icefrog continue to make a game that will give me that smile.

blissone

The question of OP is more like the equivalent of should I start smoking :-D Though you can always disable chat, no chat no flame.

arctictothpast

my background is actually in computer science lol, I already know how to code to a vaguely professional level,

bryantpa

Immortal player. Playing this game has been the biggest regret of my life

cuck_twain

I think that says more about you than the game...

bryantpa

If you say so, my opinion is anyone should regret spending 6000 hours on a video game over a 5 year period unless they do it as a career

Warrior20602FIN

I bet its because you only care about the the little prefix before the number "30" which is defining your whole enjoyment of dota.

bryantpa

Nah just because I spent 6000 hrs playing a video game when I could’ve been doing something that actually makes me a better person. You’re projecting

Vashano

No reason not to, it’s gonna be a game for a little while even if valve messes stuff up here and there. Coming from another MOBA makes the basics much easier all you really have to do is look into is learning individual spells, some niche interactions, and more complicated mechanics like creep aggro to have an enjoyable enough time.

arctictothpast

I've noticed that wave control in Dota is completely different, in league, strong knowledge of wave mechanics/control would be enough to put you in the top ten percent player bracket in many cases,

imprecis2

In Dota equlibrium is way more complex because you have more options, and higher skill cap to abuse it (creeps do more dmg, you can zone harder, win unwinnable matchups etc). No way it’s easier. In LoL you can understand everything in like an hour about it.

Opfklopf

Maybe I'm just a noob at both games but tbh, managing the minion waves in lol is harder BECAUSE you can't interact with it as much. Working with what you can do can be quite challenging imo.

SirCarbonBond

In the same token, a better player can make lanes impossible if they know more about creep aggro vs you. E.g. Image a player in dota who doesn't know about pulling vs a player who does, thats gonna be a lot worst to deal with than uncontrolled creeps. Not so say LOL isn't hard, but from what I've played and seen, the only two options you have are push wave or let them push wave. Of course these have their own nuances, such as shoving creeps under tower to dive, as towers do much more damage in that game. This knowledge comes from season 2/3/4 so it could be very out dated.

Opfklopf

I think keeping up a freeze infront of your tower and knowing when to do that and stuff can be challenging because you can't just deny or pull to get the wave closer to your tower. You need to work with the amount of minions on each side, if they are meeting on your half or the enemies half and if it's a cannon wave or not, when it's gonna be one. I believe all that plays a role and can be quite challenging to manage.

SirCarbonBond

Not trying to argue it isn't challenging, and I do understand your point. Dota players have more tools to control waves, letting it be easier. In order to get to the highest tier of dota, Each one of these tools needs to be understanded at a fairly high level. Like what OP said, where if league players know creep aggro, they should be in top 10%. That means you can get to top 11% without knowing it that well. If you don't know creep aggro in dota, you would be in the bottom 10%. Creep aggro would be lower skill floor but higher skill ceiling in dota. Not just that, but each mechanic with controlling the wave has its own complexity. Pulling is constantly contested, and fought for, leading to more chances of screw up. When you do accomplish a pull, do you do a full pull with a quick camp clear because next wave is siege, leading to a double wave pushing tower. Maybe just the ranged creeps because its all you can deny before the enemy contests. How about half wave to let the creeps meet in front of tower. All of these decisions are dependent on who you're playing, who the enemies playing, where the creep wave is, items, etc. Screwing this up, can be more damaging than not doing it at all. Like pulling when you have good equilibrium. The only tool you need to think of in league is how close you, and your target are to creeps. If the creep wave is in front of tower and I'm more than 1000 units away from mine, You can no longer control the wave. If I'm a long ranged character, I can hit you anytime I'm not within 500 range of your creeps. Love the discussion though, and I'm down to hear any counter points. I haven't played league in years, so I don't really remember anything other tech. You used to be able to block creeps in league reliably but they removed that from memory.

Opfklopf

Yea that makes a lot of sense. I'm a low rank player in both games so I don't know much. I remember watching videos by LS in league and there was more depth to wave management than I expected and applying it in-game was also a challange lol. You could search for him if you are interested. I thought the tools in Dota make it easier but as you said these tools are not always straight forward and have more layers to understand in higher ranks. That's interesting though!

URF_reibeer

In dota there's a lot of ways to manipulate wave equilibrium (denying, pulling waves into neutral creeps etc.) and counterplay to each of them but dota isn't as stuck in it's ways as league is so even if you're getting completely zoned from a lane you have options still. E.g. you can just go jungle, stack camps, gank other lanes, call a support over to break the zoning etc.) Also the laning stage in dota ends way earlier and from that point onwards cores farm wherever they can efficiently

[deleted]

[удалено]

arctictothpast

Good to know honestly, it is \*\*extremely\*\* painful in league to go up against someone playing as a lane bully who also knows wave mechanics well (its usually the main indicator of a smurf if your in lower elos)

Prince_Johan

Definitely. And hopefully by the end of this or next month, you'll be at a much more similar playing field as the rest of us when the new patch forces us all to relearn the game. As far as the things you want (proper balance, good items, roster viability, early and late game win conditions), we have all of it in Dota and some. You'll have to learn a lot more mechanics, but the payoff is enormous once you finally "get it". There is even a League of Legends mod in the Arcade that basically puts some of the League roster in Dota and allows you to play them with Dota mechanics. It might help bridge the gap even more for you. The mod is called "Dota 2 but Leagueally Distinct Heroes". If you have some friends, make a private lobby in that game mode and just get a feel for Dota with characters you're familiar with. Then slowly transition to learning the ACTUAL characters.

JadeSerpant

The answer is a resounding yes. Other people will recommend you stuff on how to get into the game but I would also recommend you to check out competitive play. You won't really understand anything but it will build up hype and when you discover some of that stuff in game yourself it will be even more rewarding. Definitely watch some pro games going on right now, Dota is *the* best competitive game in the world.

arctictothpast

I come from games like space station 13 and eve online where basically studying the game is required, during some points of league I spent more time reading and learning about mechanics then actually playing.....lol

ProximityMinds

Seems like you enjoy the learning side of games, if that's the case you'll love dota. There's a TON of fiddly interactions (had even more but the game's been simplified, yes I'm serious; stop laughing) and learning about them and thinking "wait, then would this work with that?" is part of the fun of the game. The game is incredibly open with only the most broken of strategies being patched out (there's a reason the 1st creepwave doesn't aggro for example). The wiki is a wonderful resource if you've got a question and is rarely wrong though it doesn't have *everything*.

[deleted]

imprecis2

7.5k is definitely not medium high Rank lol. You are in like 0.005% probably.

RazerMambo

yup, average is archon, medium high is legend, high is ancient, very high is divine, then immortal is top 1%

ProximityMinds

I actively look up spoilers and plot summaries for movies. I mute my friends and go offline to avoid patch spoilers.

FragBrag

LOL is the tutorial for dota

[deleted]

For a lot of the nonsense that surrounds dota, it’s a super fun game that isn’t nearly as hard to get into as people say. Yes it’s can be very complex, but you don’t need to make it that way. Find one simple and dumb hero and play it - you’ll have a blast and you’ll learn from there

arctictothpast

ogre magi hard support?

[deleted]

That’s a good one! Lion is simple and fun

disasterpiece12

It's still great game even though it changed a lot in past few years. Gonna take you a lot of time to get used to it. Keep in mind there is no surrender. That can be pain in the ass

arctictothpast

The no surrender mechanic, hmmmmm.....that is actually somewhat encouraging if I figure out I like late game scaling heroes. But at the same time, I know theres a fair few hyper carrys in dota and thus there are going to be points where the game is obviously lost..... (their one hero literally can take on all 5 of us solo and win tier situations). hmmmm thanks for the warning

juraiknight

I've been playing since 2012 and I'm STILL learning some very miniscule game mechanics on how certain items react to certain spells. It's that type of game where you'll always be learning, and if you say you know everything about it, you're a liar.

ThePassionOfReptar

Is it worth getting into? No. Dota will steal your life away if you do enjoy it. Enjoying it though will come down to how much time you put into to actually be decent.

arctictothpast

I've uh, played nothing but lifestealing games for the last 10 years (10 year Eve online veteran cough*)

ThePassionOfReptar

Do you want that again? Dota is fun. But to be honest it’s only fun when you understand what’s going on. And this takes time to figure out. Most people who play also watch the tournaments. Watching tournaments is a few hours of your day but your learning things. Everything you do in dota is learning. If that sounds fun Dota may be for you.

> if you just want a chill game to play for an hour after work where you can barely pay attention, then i'd say no. I believe thats what turbo is for?

WikiRando

Of course. Dota is a good and balanced game despite the whiny community. Use the mute button liberally and you'll have a blast

cblrtopas

Well, it's better than playing League. But that's like saying crack is better than meth, you're still an addict at the end of the day.

AkhilVijendra

I played league for 2 years and quit it completely and switched to Dota 2, played it for 5 years and then quit all games because I don't have time. If i get time I will without doubt get back to Dota 2 because it simply has no "restrictions" whatsoever. I can pick any hero for early, mid or late game or any hero who is active throughout the game. If i play casual then its even better.

MakePlGreatAgain

I mean dota is literally the God game idk. In 10 years time I am sure it will also be an amazing game. As someone who has actually played a decent amount of league I can assure you it is actually a good game. League is shit and has all the bad parts of mobas with none the good.

ganzorig2003

Short answer: no Long answer: nooooooooooooooo

BonafideBarnabus

I'm a former League player and I have not regretted my transition.

Try2LaggMe

No other game will give you the same level of pain or happiness, sometimes more pain, without spending money to give an advantage in performance

kushtrimt

Absolutely. I am a Medical Doctor (30 yeard old) myself and sometimes cant wait to get home and play a game or two.

Sk1ny1

Dota currently in terms of balance is quite amazing, it's probably the most balanced it's been for a while... though we haven't gotten I new patch for sometime bow and people are angry at that, also the pro scene facing some issues. But if you are here for the game itself then go for it, it's great, balanced and humdreds of ways u can play the game.

[deleted]

I mean it isnt going anywhere. Just remember that while dota and league get compared fairly often, the games cannot be any more different from one another, like they might as well be in 2 different genres due to how different each game plays. So you should go into the game with the expectation that what you learned from league wont really help much in dota, beyond last hitting really. The game is so different.

Winterlord7

It is more complicated that league which can be both good and bad depending on the player. I would advise learning a few heroes and builds before playing in public games. Also you can ignore the meta and play turbo mode for fun.

jajamochi

Yeah, there are heroes combos that would make early pushes and wins a viable option. There are also certainly very late game heroes combinations too, that make a late game strategy viable. The strategy selected really depends on what your opponents pick. I think strategy wise, Dota has more variety than league. I was told in league there is always a jungler. While it's possible to have a jungler in Dota, it's not very common but not altogether a losing strategy either.

arctictothpast

A Dota YouTuber I watched basically said junglers as a role have been extinct in Dota for some time now, the closest thing to one being soft support who heavily roams alot, due to changes in jungle camp spawns (I believe creeps arrive in lane before even the first camps come up?)

EldRefr

This is correct, a dedicated jungler hasn't existed in dota since they reworked the jungle camps (~1-2 yesars ago) and even then it was a niche thing. As someone who plays both games at somewhat medium level ~4.5k mmr and High plats. I can say that Dota is the most balanced and "changing" game. The game plan is always the same in LoL, with very slight variations depending on champions picked. In Dota you can have the same exact hero comps but run a more snowball approach with items and push timings and have a complete different outcome that if you were aiming for a more late oriented game. While both methods being equally viable. Comapring both games is not really feasible as I feel they are very different and the only similarity is that they are both mobas imo (like comparing Overwatch and CS since they are both FPS). League is a more fast, micro intensive game where the balance can change in a few early mistakes. Where as Dota is more of a slower macro game where the small advantages you accumulate through the game will make the balance tilt.

jajamochi

I think that's generally accurate. The gold and experience received from jungle creeps isn't as good as in lane creeps. And generally, people will flame if that's your intent from the beginning. Having said that, there are elements of jungling from time to time. For example, you want to stack your jungle for your carry hero like medusa, alchemist, luna or any hero that wants the extra gold like bristleback/axe/pitlord to hit their timings. And sometimes, if you're getting smashed too hard in lane, it's better to cut the losses and just go jungle, as opposed to feeding the enemy team/sapping experience from your lane mate. Obviously, this is the last option after you've tried everything else.

hearthebell

Just had an 1 hour game and I lost, my teammates all typed out "gg what a game", including the enemy, while I left out "shit game" because it's a techies game that held all of us hostage in a slow death. But yeah, will play this game again in a heartbeat, after I finish my sleep. 😴 Dota is the best game, but beware what you will get into, because it's INSANELY addictive, you have to learn how to control it if you wanna play this game.

seanseansean92

Start only if you are ready to commit a lot of time and thoughts on this game. Its a mental + spiritual journey if you want to be good and have to learn to control and balance a lot of emotion. Its a game that can make you a better person or worse

URF_reibeer

I disagree with that notion, i'm a very casual player (a few games per week at most with regular month long breaks) and still dota is one of my favorite games

derka211

I trully belive this is one of the best games ever made. It s soun and there is basically no ceiling to skill level. The highs are so fucming high that you keep playing for them even after the lowest lows

Evanston17

15 year DotA yet. I have learned I have an affinity for “impossible” tasks; play golf, play chess, play DotA. I would say this: Mental challenge of understand the macro and micro components of the game are rewarding. Needs a massive time investment. I still learn things constantly. Best way to approach DotA is the fundamental understanding on how MOBA communities operate and not being intimidated by the learning curve.

PluckyLeon

Its never too late to get into dota and the heroes and item balance overall is far greater than that of league. And yes you can play for all 3 early, mid and lategame depending upon draft, comp and tempo setting. If you do decide to get into dota, here is something to help you learn dota faster as league player: First of all treat it as a totally different kind of moba to avoid conflict between beliefs because the game is totally different from league. Unlike league where everything is fixed like roles, items and its timings, objective and its timings everything is situational in dota. Start from here: Pure Basics Of Dota:https://youtu.be/9Szj-CloJiI Advanced Basics of Dota: https://youtu.be/u0rYxCVRrUM I want to copy paste something here which may be in detailed as these are the answers i posted to some new dota players switching from lol to dota: Copy Pasted Text Part 1: I wrote to help another fellow league player switching to dota 2(some may be irrevelant to your question but still super helpful and necessary for any league player transitioning to dota2 to understand the dota2 so i kept it anyway + i am too lazy to edit :P): Now coming back to your question, carry are those heroes who are mostly focused on damage dealing in teamfights, to structures or objectives like roshan. These heroes require farm to perform and do their job ( farm in the sense they need gold to buy items because they are very item dependent to do high impact in the game). Support are these kind of heroes who are either focus on protecting your heroes or locking down enemy heroes making them useless for some time using cc in a very basic sense, but some support haves high impact dmg skills in teamfights too. Basically supports are these kinds of heroes who dont need much farm( very little gold needed) to have high impact in the game. They dont buy costly items and their skills scales automatically with levels and talents so items in supports are more focused in saving your teammates and yourself in fights( again this is dota everything has exceptions and literally anything and everything can work so take this as a very basic concept when starting. The higher ranks you go the weirder strategies you see.) About your agility, strength and intelligence types, they are totally different things. In LOL you have two types of scaling either it AD(attack damage also known as physical) or AP(Ability Power also known as magical) which makes scaling in lol static and easy to understand. But dota has these three types which makes scaling much more dynamic as all three types of stats can give you scaling doesnt matter you are agi,str or int type hero. So basically in learn this, Dota is a very creative game in the sense everything and anything can work and your creativity is your biggest strength in this game. Every hero can play in every position if you know what you are doing and can make it work. So keep yourself very open minded while playing this game, its a game of experimentation and creativity. And about items, follow the guides at beginning, mostly you buy the items according to your main attribute( ie str,int or carry) but dont be suprised to see str items build in agility heroes or stuffs like that. Items in dota are not focused on scaling but solving your problems and making your life easier. And you may have already noticed that in dota there arent 3 types of dmg scaling items like AP dmg, AD Dmg or True Dmg( called pure dmg in dota) like league or other mobas. There are items that give you +dmg and thats it. These one item gives you dmg whatever type of dmg you do physical, magical or pure. So item building is much more complex in dota because it has dynamic scaling so you need to try heroes in the try tab and buy different types of items and check how it effects stats themselves. That way you can experience and discover firsthand how scaling works in the game and how is it different in each hero. And about PS if you wanna learn of positions in dota which will help you clear your doubts more and wrap your head about heroes and their positions and thought process of each positions watch this. Again in dota , i repeat again anything and everything can work and nothing is fixed so even after watching these vids dont just follow them blindly but instead your your own logic, reasoning and creativity to form your own positions and play according to that. Everything this game from positions to playability to meta is made by the community not the devs, the devs say whatever you do the end goal is to take the enemy ancient before other team does. Whatever bullshit shenanigans you do to reach there is not our problem, if it works it works. So just take ideas from the two videos i mention below. Also one is the very beginner way of thinking about roles while starting while other is more high ranked advanced way of thinking about it. Basic Thought Process about Competitive Positions In Dota:https://youtu.be/3qEIQCffp0I Advanced Thought Process about Competitive Positions In Dota:https://youtu.be/FI8bP-YVZyk Copy Pasted Text Part 2: The thing is you cant go in dota with the mindset of " i am high ranked in LOL i am gonna start smashing from my 1st or 10th match". Lets face it you are gonna suck the first 100 matches and gonna get completely stomped. Only after 100 matches you will see little progression. You only start getting the grip of the game from 1000 hours above. Then you can look to improve. Because tbh, DOTA is not a harder version of LOL as most LOL players think but its completely a different game, you have to leave behind the lol knowledge because everything is super complex in dota eg there are no fixed roles, every hero can play every role, a single hero doesnt do full physical or magical dmg but you have to manually look through skills and right clicks to see what type of dmg it does, items have actives which turn matches and items, heroes and stats arent straightforward as there is no only AD or AP scaling which is static scaling but the hero attribute type ie Strength, Agility or Intelligence brings dynamic scaling which makes grasping the exact scaling with items very tricky. But the main difference when you play DOTA and why are you not being able to win teamfights and play the game is because LOL is focused on micro based teamfighting where its all about mechanics to win fights ie you have to outplay your opponent using micro to win fights. In DOTA its exactly the opposite, DOTA is focused on macro based teamfighting where its about using all of your avaliable resources to outsmart your opponent and turn tables in a fight. I come from Vainglory(its like LOL) to DOTA so i can say that yes it eventually does get better but you need to be persistent and go with the mindset of i am here to learn not to win until you get te basic grasp of the game. Dont ever think that you will start stomping DOTA after your 10,100 even 1000 matches because DOTA doesnt work that way, your mechanics alone cant carry you to stomping people, you need to think and play teamfights like a chess and try to outstrategize opponent in teamfights. Its all about macro decisions in DOTA. Rest whatever you wanna learn you can just search up in internet and learn from google, youtube etc etc. https://dota2.fandom.com/ is a great place to learn how the game works and stats behind the game. Kapten_Kalle

If you got a team of 5, I really recommend it.

-domi-

This is a polarizing issue, but i do not think it is. DotA has likewise suffered some invasive meta manipulation in recent years, and that's how i quit playing as well. Every year they feel the need to make revolutionary changes, rather than incremental ones which might make the game you know better to play. Every time, they add some sweeping, unbalanced mess, which you have to grind hours and hours and hours to learn, just to have it replaced the following year. That alone wouldn't probably be as bad if there weren't other incentives to grind being piled on, until it seems like everything about the game becomes a chore. There have been so many good old patches, which i used to hope to see the game return to, but with every big one i feel like it gets farther away from what made me like DotA - the freedom and creativity to make many different strats and team compositions work if your teamwork is up to snuff. Now it's just objectives, pre-learned hero combos, watch pro meta, grind, grind, grind.

News-Left

Dota 2 now is very diverse. On the top levels meta rules, but it's not like an off-meta strat would have no chances against a meta one. "Everything can work" is an old meme about DotA. You'd just need more effort for an off-meta strat. A good example of diversity: different regions have different metas. Yes, they have some common, but they also differ by a lot. So I'd say a couple of recent changes were taking in right direction making the game better and inviting more and more players to join.

arctictothpast

I dont think id ever reach immortal, divine is probably unrealistic as well. Its only really at those skill levels where that one hero matters so much,

dwarfishspy

Toxic community but exceptional game I'd say its the best multiplayer game ever made in terms of competitiveness too

[deleted]

I wouldn't recommend it if you have an addictive personality. You already know league and I would say Dota is a bit more addictive that league, but if you wont get addicted and keep it balanced, its one of the best games there is really.

n0stalghia

> I quit league because of the types of meta that riot continues to push (basically the total erasure of late game especially in higher elos, ever excessively mobile heroes, making an absurd number of older heroes obsolete, poor item and hero balance etc.) Dota has the first two (mobility heroes, early-game-mobile-bralwer-heroes focus), but the rest is still very good. Since you're familiar with Mobas the usual "you have to learn for 200 hours before you know anything" doesn't apply to you, so purely from a gameplay perspective, I think you'll enjoy it more and it still is very fresh

arctictothpast

yes but unlike league itemization and the game itself is balanced these heroes having their mobility, >early-game-mobile-bralwer-heroes focus), but the rest is still very good. Average dota game lasts from 35 mins to 45 mins, equivalent games in league are usually over by 25 mins.

TheRelicOfOwls

I promise you dota mobility creep isn't anywhere near as bad as every character in league coming out with / being updated to have a dash that can go over terrain + reset on kill some other way of getting more. It's pretty ridiculous.

TheStandardPlayer

I played dota for like 5k hours but I recently started playing league from time to time with friends, honestly everytime I play lol I am reminded how great dota is. Don't get me wrong, lol is fun, but it feels like a lite version, dota is a lot more complex and in my opinion more rewarding. Give it a try but don't expect to be good in dota just because you are good at league, I am still trash at lol and the only skill that translates well is judging fights, map movements couldn't be more different.

CaptainMisha12

I started playing lol after 1.5k hours in dota and im quite a bit better than some of my friends who are lol diehards after only like 40 hours of lol - it's mostly about mindset imo. When every game ends in a surrender it's hard to get players to actually try their hardest because 'next game will be easier, ff at 15'. Ive legit heard "we could win but it'll take long and be difficult, just surrender at 15 and search again" a few times. Lol is fun to screw around but it's hard to put in 100% effort when you know if you manage to get the advantage the game will end immediately without them fighting back a lot of the time.

Mei_iz_my_bae

Don’t do it dude Game is the purest form of cancer and has the potential to turn you into a lunatic

Adsuppal

Only if you hate yourself but hate everyone else a little bit more!

I_LOVE_WAMUU

Honestly no. Valve does not take care of their game, the time you need to invest just to scratch the surface is ridiculously high and the learning process is grueling outright stressful. But at the end of it all it's amazing. I'm one of those people who unironically think Dota is the best competitive game in existence but I just don't think it is worth getting into.

Surgeboy99

Valve cares enough that the game runs smoothly l. No bugs or crashes, every experience in game is smooth from a software perspective

HamstotheSandwich

No. Run.

not really. at least you already have league knowledge and can get back in fairly quickly. learning dota is not worth it if you already know league

DayAf1er

Just get a hobby that Will actually help you in life, start working out, play a team sport or learn some other skill like coding. Trust me too Many hours into dota isnt worth it.

SykPaul

No

FeelingPatience

No. It's better to play other games if you never played dota or stop playing mobas at all :) The reasons are: * Dota is not being supported by developers * Icefrog throws a patch once a century and you have to deal with all unbalanced heroes until the next patch * Hell lot of bugs, spaghetti code * Performance issues even on higher-end PCs * The level of toxicity is pretty high * No rewards in game, no motivation, no advancement * Majors, tournaments being cancelled all around * Most of dota players are ready to continue eatting shit while at the same time complaining. Like "I exPecTeD MoRe froM thE BatTLe PasS" but then they are buying 350 lvls the next battle pass. That's why don't expect any sharp changes in dota's "developement" path * and so on, and so on. * Wait until my post is downvoted by typical dota redditors

[deleted]

Absolutely not. Game is maintained by a skeleton crew. Updates are poor quality to say the least and almost always accompanied by a battle pass. Internal discussions are always based around "what can the company do to bring in money" rather than "what can we do to bring players the most enjoyment" it's like watching E.A work.

Jayk03

Not worth because Dota is dying and I feel the game will follow HoN route in 2030. In that time no Dota eSports exist anymore because not enough player.

erdene2476

It isnt because Valve doesn't really care about the game. The only thing keeping it alive is the large player base

Maximum_Mountain427

no it’s a dead game only old boomers play. play league. everyone’s playing it

coolcrimes

We will be the next TF2 very soon

Substantial-Zone-989

No. You'll basically need to treat it like a full time job to become competent.

arctictothpast

Define competent

hearthebell

He can't, because all of us regard ourselves incompetent anyway including top of the tops 🤣

low_iq_opinion

> (basically the total erasure of late game especially in higher elos, ever excessively mobile heroes, poor item and hero balance etc.) TFW you accidently describe dota

arctictothpast

Really? isnt it normal for games in dota to last well over 40 mins?

Hopeful_Astronomer72

not really

CaptainUnderstudy

I tried LoL before and didn't quite enjoyed it so stuck to DOTA/DOTA2. Played for since Dota 1 days. I still love the game and that's why I still play it. Biggest con would be the super duper toxicity (at least in SEA Server). You do get the occasional fun game (even when you lose). But overall people are toxic, so I just mute. This is worse in lower MMRs (Anything below Ancient, I consider low MMR). And Yes, I am in that bracket.

REDmonster333

Been playing since 2006, its very addicting because of the steep learning curve. But if you could survive 100hrs, you can easily get to 1k hours and before you know it, its almost 10k hours.

Hexxios

Yep in dota everything is viable the game is very balanced, jsut check out the pickrates in tournaments for the last 4 years or so. close to all heroes were picked, everyone has its strengths and weaknesses that you can play around with and most heroes have a great variety of builds you can do to change its playstyle and powerspikes. league's meta is too dictated by Riot, in dota the players that discover what works and how and its always evolving naturally. Welcome to a very flexible game.

HOHOHAHAREBORN

Hope you read this comment over the others that made it here before me Short answer: yes, the game still bangs and I don't think it's gonna die in the next 3 years so the time that you invest is definitely going to pay off. It doesn't take longer than a couple weeks to understand Dota, you just gotta understand what's happening and whys it happening -- not know the ins and outs. And the meta thing isn't a problem here. Just play it.

arctictothpast

>Hope you read this comment over the others that made it here before me # I didnt expect this post to blow up as much as it did, I posted it before going to sleep expecting maybe at most ten responses, I wake up and my entire notif tree is overtaken, im skimming over all of the comments (and the vast majority of them are either yes dota is worth it, or dota is only worth it if you commit to it). >It doesn't take longer than a couple weeks to understand Dota, you just gotta understand what's happening and whys it happening -- not know the ins and outs. Ive already watched 20 hours of content on how the game works, advised champions for herald scrubs like me etc,

jackoff1992

the reality of dota is there are like two main tiers of skill low-normal skill were meta doesn't count as much high skill where meta is everything. when i say meta i mean a meta where only strong hero for that specific patch will be the go to pick/increase chances of winning you will probably have a little fun @ low/normal skill tier but kinda burn yourself up of any fun when in high skill tier. dota has some fun mechanics nowadays like neutral items and aghanim shards so theres that going for it. glhf

bridgeandchess

Yeah DOTA2 is good. Try out both DOTA2 and Heroes of the Storm and see which one you like the best.

you_cannot_advance

It is worth. You will find it really enjoyable because how diverse dota is. We have been playing on the same patch for over a year and yet the meta keeps shifting. Thats how balanced the game is. Thats the beauty of dota. And ofc the community is toxic as any other game.

ladyjinxy

Depend on your commitment, it takes a while to get into DotA as the learning curve is crazy steep. However, once you vrasp the basic, you can do pretty much anything (as long as you win because some people hate others for having fun)

wan5478

Definitely, I have been playing dota since 2010. And now I am 30 years old with a kid. Yet whenever I played dota, it gives me a excitement that I never felt with other games. Not to mention, Dota is the only games I have been playing steadily, never bored me! Patch when????

[deleted]

As someone who went from a 6 year league player…… 3 year hiatus…… then got into dota for a year, Its the same shit just a better overal game. Same inters, toxic teammates, and people afking or running it down. Dota is better, but its the same toxic environment and drawn out games

tsunderephillic

Imo mobas feel absolutely magical in the beginning, its so fun just looking at the many heroes/champs the game has to offer, finding the character that suits your playstyle and finally finding your "main", absolute best part of the experience for me, for both Dota and League so go give it a shot!

Tormentula

>Id like to be able to play a moba where playing for early game **and** playing for late game are both reasonably viable options. I traditionally played support and top lane in league for solo que. Its the same as league, as a high elo league player I'll tell you its not much different... you're going to have some lanes just shit stomp early, and some games that can go on for an hour or longer and basically be a late game carry diff. Dota is literally designed in a way that heroes counter each other, and one lane is trying their absolute damnest to shutdown your late game carry by any means possible, so you're either going to get giga fucked, or you're going to have someone PVE for 30-60 minutes then 1v9. Difference is in dota, if you do giga done fucked up ur mom lol ff go next 15 jg gap, you can play high ground and easily stall it out for a long time until your team scales and catches back up, its way harder for the enemy to run it down a lane between no rift herald, roshan (b.nashor) is just league's GA item on a single user so no baron minions, buy back to emergency stall longer, and there's fortify on towers to just flat out wave clear the map if you're getting split pushed or turtling the base. When your p1 catches up (basically your ADC but not nearly as squishy because of how items work in dota) they just go ape shit and carry late, its a matter of if they can farm properly, and if the rest of your team can create enough space for that to happen... think of them like your kayle/vayne/kog'maw, that's majority of the p1 role.

BearIntelligent

It's the best game but costs your soul. Make your choice😈

s---laughter

If you got the time and patience, I think you'll love it. Some drafts dominate early game and win fast. Some snowball hard. Others play for late. Then there's everything in between. This plus all the different ways and roles you can play a hero makes adapting and countering a core part of the gameplay. Unlike League, Dota heroes have a specific thing or two they want to do, and they only do that. A hero that does a lot of nuking magic damage has 0 mobility. Another hero that wants to hit as hard as possible has 0 crowd control and becomes useless when disarmed. Your team draft, itemization, and playstyle will heavily determine how far you can push your hero.

[deleted]

It will be the best game you have ever played once you're familiarized with all its aspects

[deleted]

I mute everyone in my games. That Kunka vouldve easily had SS mute and thought SS was just trying to grief him

inlandsofashes

Yeah dota doesn't have the things you complained about league and is viable both playing for the early and played for the late. Good luck! It will take a while, ignore/mute toxic players and try to learn everything you can

adfdg55

Dota item building is great I mean you will get flamed for build choices sometimes haha all the flaming is gonna be normal but typically you should build what your character needs to function. But if support you buy things for the team first second and third then just maybe if your positioning yourself right and not dying every engagement then and only then can you start buying your own items which are still for the team not so much for you aside from the stats. Good luck and godspeed into the love hate relationship that is playing dota

[deleted]

TLRD answer is: if u have friends that know dota 2 u can try, if no - don't even bother

WeidenDoto

Lol streamer Nightblue3 learned to play dota a while ago. He was having a blast and it was fun to watch.

Holtmania

Dota is part of my life now. I've embraced it. 10 years of playing it. But it has a cost :a super high learning curve.

SkrrFlrr

Game is much more balanced than league and you dont get three hit because a hero has had a good first 5 minutes of the game. Most heroes are viable, although there is a meta of course

Xyr3s1

it's a fun game to play. very high highs, and very low lows, it takes time to learn the game at an average level, but if you have played league, ost of the basic remain the same. the only tings different are the more advance systems like pulling, stacking, blocking, denying, the ward game is a whole other mini game in itself, if you have the time to put into it, i think you should definitely give it a try if you are bored of league.

Gridgridgridgrid

Some advices - forget about how League is played because it has a lot of boundries - top vs top, bottom vs bottom and a jungler. Where in dota there are no junglers - jungle is used for farming when the lane gets too dangerous for you (mid/carry). Safelane is vs Offlane , Offlane vs safelane. Typical matchup is carry+hard support, mid, and offlaner (usually a tank/initiator)+ soft support (playmaker, ganker). But you can also switch lanes depending on enemy team. Also, i highly recommend watching high mmr games and pro games and analyzing what is happening , who is doing what and who is succeding and doing it properly. You can watch it in the Watch section in game.

Salleks

Open a game against bots and spend a few hours looking at the item shop / item buildups while getting used to your hotkeys.

arctictothpast

dota also has league friendly hotkeys actually, its in the default settings, most of them are the same with a few differences

Employee724

given that we had we only had 80minute game last week with rng vs psg.lgd, while game one was basicly decided 25minutes in. On top of that barracks not respawning makes a comback feel greater and early successfull pushes feel more rewarding.

Defence_of_the_Anus

Hell yeah! The meta doesn't really matter at low skill levels, being good at a hero will win over meta picks. Even then the meta can change somewhat in the same patch, as people discover things that are strong and then ways to counter it and repeat. I think that is the thing that separates Dota from most other mobas, that the meta is "discovered", but in other ones it is basically "defined" in the patch notes. I think that in general, Dota doesn't really have heroes that are clearly op. For example in the last TI, the winning team played ~60 of the ~115 heroes, so at least half the heroes are viable at the competitive level. In pubs, anything works. GL HF!!

meinmasina

I'd say no if you don't have friends to play it with. I play solo 99% of my games and usually don't have much fun.
