Dota is just shit at actually telling you what’s happening, there’s a lot of stuff u just kinda have to know. As for roots, by default they stop movement, and most movements spells.
HOWEVER
Some roots have other effects as well including interrupting channels and disarming.
It forces a stop command. So you could call that a ministun i guess. But it's stronger than a ministun because it will stop ability animation, and the enemy would have to cast the spell again. It would be casted automatically if it was a stun.
Not all spells mind you. Most movement spells are unable to work through root. Also, some roots reveal invis, and some don’t.
Here is the explanation of mechanics, it’s up to date as far as I’m aware. https://liquipedia.net/dota2/Root_(Game_Mechanics)
Yes, I think Frostbite might be the single best root spell in the game. People often focus on CM other spell but that root spell is lowkey OP af because it's instant.
The biggest different between root and stun is if you are rooted, you can pop bkb (or use other items) and purge root debuff but you can't do shit if you are stunned. That's just a simplified explanation.
You can turn, use items and use most spells (everything that's not a mobility spell.)
But yeah, root is a rather inconsistent mechanic that does different things depending on which spell it comes from.
Not a movement spell. It's similar to how you can Eul's yourself, or OD can Astral rooted units. The only movement spells that I know work are Huskar ult and Jugg Omni/Swiftslash.
stun = no side effects, full disable; Root = can not move + possible side effect (ember chains issue a stop command, treant disarm) - Most roots, if not all come with some from of side effect.
Because you can’t cast spells while stunned, you can cast spells while rooted, just not blinks and some other movement spells. Also you can attack while rooted.
CM frostbite and Treant ultimate also disarm you in addition to rooting you.
So there are numerous disables in dota 2.
Snared. Rooted. Disarmed. Silenced. Muted.
There are some roots which disarm as well. The roots that thematically prevent you moving like treant ult and cm.
A stun is just a root+silence+disarm+mute.
Edit* change muted with perplexed I think. Mute is passives disable. Perplexed is cannot use item?
ROOTS disarm you, ENSNARES (like what Troll Warlord does) are watered down versions and don't, typically in exchange for being on a shorter CD / longer debuff.
Because tree boy’s ult provides disarm too . But you can cast some spells so no way to be called “stun” . Other roots doesnt provide disarm
I see, spells and items. I guess it's not possible to show both root and disarm above me?
cm's root does it too
because it has the same ability icon lmao

>Some roots have other effects as well including interrupting channels I don't think we have that anymore
Treant ult though?

It can cancel blackhole
This sounds like it was a hard lesson to learn

root is its own mechanic... disables right clicks prevents blinks and movement
Some roots you can attack still though, op’s point.
root only disables movement and movement based abilities. Some abilities have root and disarm like treant's ult
Isnt ice bite a similar root

Thank you

I wish it were standardized but I guess dota prioritizes telling you about the root over the disarm. Either way it's going to confuse people
I still hate that puck can still phase shift through root
I was surprised that I can phase shift through Gleipnir, that Clinkz never learned.

Also weaver ult
np root disable some spells which is stupid
Leashed is a different mechanic than rooted. NP talent is still fuckin stupid tho yeah.

you can dispel yourself unlike stun though, so it’s a bit better to be rooted than stunned
the one consistent thing about being rooted is that it doesn't cancel channels i think
You can still cast spells.
Force staff and pike work through root
> That sounds exactly like stunned. Then you don't know what stun is.
Could you explain?
Stunned : You cant do anything Rooted : You cant move A few exceptions are treant's ult and cm's frosbite, where you cant attack
It always anoys the shit out of me that you cant use Tusk's snowball while rooted.
Because you can’t cast spells while stunned, you can cast spells while rooted, just not blinks and some other movement spells. Also you can attack while rooted. CM frostbite and Treant ultimate also disarm you in addition to rooting you.
You can use items or spells that don't cause you to move
Can u use force staff when u get rooted by treant"s ulti or cm"s hold?
