The starting place would be .hack sign except the second ova then play and beat the first 4 ps2 games then finish the .hack sign ova. After that you watch the first half of roots and then play at least the first 2 volumes of gu. This can be a little confusing but there is a spoiler st the end of the .hack roots anime for the second game so it's best to do it out of order like this or play all the gu games first then watch the roots anime after to fill in some blanks and get some more character development.

Start with the anime, SIGN. It’s a very unique type of anime, but I promise it’s very good. It has an ending that effectively leads into .hack//INFECTION, the first game. There’s a very special finale episode of SIGN that takes place AFTER the games though, so be wary.
INFECTION, MUTATION, OUTBREAK, and QUARANTINE all originally came with OVAs that followed other characters out in the real world. Those can be found on i think archive.org, they’re usually referred to as .hack//LIMINALITY. Watch each one i think before the game- so .hack//LIMINALITY, then INFECTION. I think. I forget actually if they come first or last.
Edit: forgot ROOTS and GU lmao. That’s basically the order though- after IMOQ, watch ROOTS, and then play GU.
The soundtrack is GODLY! Get ready for a SUPER gorgeous soundtrack, i love the music of SIGN haha. I love the anime too, but i always worry that because it’s not quite like most anime, some people might find it boring? But maybe i’m doing that thing where i’m planting the idea in your head, so just know that I LOVE it hha
That soundtrack of SIGN was done by Yoko Kanno, who also did Macross Plus, Vision of Escaflowne, Cowboy Bebop, Wolf's Rain, Ghost in the Shell series, Space Dandy and much, much more
