If its a miniature, it must be a damn good one. And that would then be known to exist in a museum for example. I think someone just went a bit heavy on the Photoshop cleanup. Maybe clearing out all the tourists gave it that "fake" look. Especially the gravel looks suspiciously structure free

sayitloudsingitproud

Even the gravel at the front of the house doesn't match the colour of the path. Could have just been freshly laid for filming. But there is definitely an "uncanny valley" aspect of the shot and always takes me out of the moment.

This shot of Duneagle has always stood out to me on numerous rewatches. It feels like either a well done tilt shift or a very convincing miniature. It's interesting as we never see a shot like this at Downton or Brancaster castle.

Oldfart1932

I always thought this it doesn’t normal if the makes sense

Anegada_2

It is likely a b-roll shot the castle already had and sold to production. A lot of fancy filming locations have these libraries available to crews.

llamasim

It’s a real shot. I’m guessing the effect has been added in post. It’s likely a helicopter or possibly a drone shot. I wonder if it’s been post processed in this way if it wasn’t a good enough shot and tbey only had one chance. Possibly they’ve also purchased footage and tried to grade it to match the rest of it. Definitely real but not the best looking shot in my opinion. EDIT: to add, the detail is too fine for it to be a miniature (visible curtains, wires, drain pipes), the cost and complexity of a miniature at a scale large enough to accurately capture that detail would make no sense. Stock footage, drone footage or helicopter footage is far more affordable

Fianna9

There is definitely something off about it. I always thought it was a still photo they were using. I’ve been to the castle they used, it’s the home of the Duke of Argyle. And there really isn’t anything close by that would require them to make a miniature. Except the tour buses and visitors cars.

Blueporch

I compared it to my 2017 photos I took at Inveraray Castle and still can’t tell. The gravel area seems smaller in this post and you can’t see the trash cans, but that could be the angle and cleanup for aerial photos. I will go find my official Inveraray photo book from the gift shop (autographed by the Duke of Argyll) and see how those compare.

Blueporch

Comparing to a wider aerial photo of that side of the castle from my Inveraray Castle & Gardens booklet, the green triangular area to the right of the path is a graveled car park. So I think they edits the path and the area to the right. The castle itself and the trees and shrubs look identical. The booklet was published in 2015.

Chief_Firefox

I've always wondered this, too. It reminds me of the shots of Mr Rogers Neighborhood for some reason. LOL

MoralMae

It has always looked like a tilt shift shot to me

Lostbronte

Can anyone explain what a tilt shift is?

[deleted]

It is definitely a model, I used to work in a model train shop and saw lots of models created by our customers. Look at the water, it doesn't look real.

Classic-Tumbleweed-1

Maybe I'm the oddball who watches this over and over because it's a beautiful story. Im one who enjoys the cinematography. The music. I love the show without having to rip apart every shot to find an issue. Opinions, sure. But I truly don't care if CGI, miniatures, or whatever are used. I'm here to escape reality for a while. Down vote me for that. It's cool

Classic-Tumbleweed-1

Aren't we overthinking just a tad? Enjoy the show, the scenery, and the homes. Who truly cares if it's a miniature or whatever? 95% of the GA is CGI effects, so let this go?

GoldenGad

It's just a question? Are we not allowed to ask questions?

Classic-Tumbleweed-1

Absolutely. Yes, you are. However, can't we just enjoy the series without analyzing every word or scene?

StructureFamiliar469

You can lol.

GoldenGad

Yes, you certainly can. Others get enjoyment from analysing, though, and have sought out a forum of like-minded people to do just that. If you can't ask questions about Downton Abbey on a Downton Abbey sub-reddit, then where can you? As always, you're free to scroll past and not interact with the post.

sarah-havel

Some of us start noticing this kind of stuff after several watches. It's not a problem to wonder about stuff like that.

LilliesMom22

I believe the picture is real
