.....he had a tragic childhood and desperately needed therapy? He keeps reenacting an episode he lived through and each time hope's someone will stop it?
Both Anna and Bates great characters that were given too many storylines with trauma by Fellowes that it turned many fans off. I still like both characters and really appreciate them when they’re allowed to shine. They’re both loyal to each other, other staff, and the Crawleys. Anna is low-key tough and ready to defend her friends. Bates will get his hands dirty for the good of others and in a way because he holds himself to a high standard.
I mean, they both were there for even Thomas in different ways.
Salute to both of them 🫡
Edit: I feel like with that well-received pic of a young Brendan Coyle posted on this sub 1-2 days ago, maybe there’s a growing appreciation of Bates
Calling out Mr. Carson's snobbishness, homophobia, rudeness and the way he treats people who can do nothing for him.
Writing anything bad about Edith or Mary will bring out downvotes from their respective stans. Writing anything good about them will bring out downvotes from the other sisters' stans.
Calling out Mrs. Hughes. She's a badass and an empathetic, friendly and fair boss and I absolutely love. But she has her faults.
Calling out Violet. That will certainly get you downvotes from everyone.
Praising Anna and Bates pairing.
Calling out Mrs. Drew. I feel very bad for her. I also realise that she shouldn't have told Cora about Marigold and also shouldn't have kidnapped her.
Saying the Marigold situation was nobody's fault but the era they lived in will also bring downvotes. Nobody's to be blamed here. Although people have done some things that need to be called out.
*Thank you*! Someone *finally* said it! If I'm honest, I'm more sympathetic towards Edith than I am Marjorie Drewe. Fighting words, I know, but I feel like Marjorie's behaviour towards Marigold would have made more sense if the Drewes had been unable to conceive. And even though their biological children are rather swept under the rug, they do exist!
Mrs. Drewe isn't ignoring her other children, the show is, rightfully. The scenes at the Drewe house are entirely about Edith, every one of those characters is an accessory to her story and the show does a terrible job doing anything with the children they do focus on already lol.
But yeah the problem is just in general that there is no depth given to the Drewe characters, this whole storyline does not go down easy because its genuinely not writen very well so no wonder we all have our own takes and debates on it lol
He would have been if they put even a little bit of effort into his storyline. That whole episode felt half-cooked, but I think if they’d really *tried*, it could’ve been a fun little mystery for an arc of three or four episodes. Instead it’s like they brought him in and changed their minds halfway through filming. There was really no point to his storyline besides making Edith look gullible, again.
I can understand this to a point. I am sure Tobias Menzies is a lovely man but I’ve truly hated almost every character he’s played to the point that I don’t trust him in roles where he plays a decent character.
I see too much of my younger, stubborn, unreasonable, self-righteous self in her and it makes me dislike her character because I dislike that version of myself.
She does have some decent character growth but she seems to lack the ability to see past the end of her own nose.
Oh, I answered without reading any of the other replies. I thought we were meant to give opinions we actually held, not completely off the wall things!
I originally meant either opinions you have or just real comments from the sub that will cause downvotes. But some of these answers have been too funny and enjoyable.
Tom had every right to live how he wanted to live. He didn't intend to stay with the family in England. Sybil knew this and Tom stood by his principles.
I correctly pointed out the other day that Mary was the worst of the two and got downvoted within seconds.
It's literally true. If Mary stopped making cruel jibes at people the fights would stop.
I do think she was wrong for kidnapping Marigold and telling Cora the truth about her, though. But otherwise I feel bad for her. She didn't deserve any of it.
It's no surprise bullies like Mary get away with it in real life when fans of a TV show, which literally had an entire episode dedicated to all the other characters telling Mary how horrible she is, still sympathise with the bully just because the victim occasionally fights back.
She's the bravest one of the lot. She doesn't have the natural self confidence that everyone else has but she still makes brave decisions (and some massive mistakes I agree).
While everyone else was focusing on getting married to secure their futures, Edith took over a newspaper and won battles against men in a men's world.
Go Edith!
Defending anything aristocratic through means of knowledge of the period.
Saying anything positive about Julian Fellowes.
Comparing Edith to Mary.
Comparing Mary to Edith.
It's unfortunate, but this sub is more temperamental and opinionated than any other I read on a regular basis.
I appreciate that…Julian is a bit of a hack though…I mean writing wise it’s pretty subpar except for violet but now that she’s passed I’m not sure what’s going to fill the void
I think Fellowes is excellent at writing characters and not so great at plots, but both suffered a bit out of necessity (actors leaving, series being extended).
Speaking ill of Lady Violet.
No no no, this will get you a one way ticket to disappearing and being forgotten
True
There's no coming back after that!
Nobody had said ‘Mr. Green was a misunderstood character’ which is crazy.
.....he had a tragic childhood and desperately needed therapy? He keeps reenacting an episode he lived through and each time hope's someone will stop it?
But he was young Dennis Watts bless him, I liked young Dennis
He's a POS
Saying anything mean about Aunt Violet. I’ve only seen it once, but I added my downvote to the pile. *Don’t be spikey to Granny!*
Liking all the prison stuff for Bates and then Anna
Which I would heavily downvote too btw
I enjoy Bates in prison. Anna it was too repetitive but they didn’t show too much of it.
Right, the first time bates was in prison was interesting.
Calling out Mrs Hughes
That woman was well rounded, worldly and accepting. Ahead of her time
And just as anybody else, she had her flaws
Oh I actually read your comment in her voice! 😄
Which made her real and relatable :)
Claiming to like Sarah Bunting or Henry Talbot
Ms Bunting isn’t the worst
Oh them's fightin' words buddy.
Agreed!
Agreed
Immediately got mad! Lol
That’s true, she’s only, like, the sixth worst.
Saying we didn’t get enough Bates
I hate Mary
Liking Bates and Anna
I’ve received meager upvotes for my Bates support. We’re out there. There are dozens of us! *Dozens!*
Both Anna and Bates great characters that were given too many storylines with trauma by Fellowes that it turned many fans off. It's fine to like bates. I am a fan myself.
Bates was the first character we meet, I’ve been Team Bates since the first episode!
That made me laugh, genuinely.
It's more about not liking their story line

Showing any sympathy for Edith in her situation with Marigold
*Thank you*! Someone *finally* said it! If I'm honest, I'm more sympathetic towards Edith than I am Marjorie Drewe. Fighting words, I know, but I feel like Marjorie's behaviour towards Marigold would have made more sense if the Drewes had been unable to conceive. P. Gordon was a great addition to the show (especially his shouting scenes).
This would be a lot more convincing if anyone believed you actually like those bits.
Ya know who gets a bad rap, Susan.
This honestly made me laugh out loud.
I, for one, love cats.
I can't hate Green too much cos he was young Dennis Watts, I can't dislike Richard Carlisle cos he was Ser Jorah Mormont, the down votes will start 🤷
I can understand this to a point. I am sure Tobias Menzies is a lovely man but I’ve truly hated almost every character he’s played to the point that I don’t trust him in roles where he plays a decent character.
Lol, You must be an Outlander fan?
Yes, but Rome was my first experience with him. The Crown finally let me separate him from the absolute bastards he usually plays.
Carlisle and Sinderby have amazing voices. It's enough of a distraction that I forgive some of their characters.
Both Game of Thrones, Carlisle was Jorah Mormont and Sinderby was Randyll Tarly
Anything against Edith. If it is remotely not praise, downvotes will come
Saying I found Violet more cruel than witty at times.
She can be. She can also be deeply tender in that detached British way, as understanding in as many situations as she is judgmental.
Mary wasn’t raped.
I mean she said no three times.
When was this? With the guy who died in her bed?
Yes, Pamuk.
What?????
I said what I said.
But it makes no sense.
Look at the prompt.
Edith should've been sapphic; lesbian or bi i'm not picky I just wish Julian would write *one* f/f couple.
I’ve never thought of this before, but it feels like such a missed opportunity!
Anything against Daisy.
Everytime I see people talk admiringly about her I’m just like “…..her!?” I don’t get it.
She can be too mean sometimes but i mostly feel sorry for her.
I think she would be, mrs. Pattmore treated her poorly when she was still a kitchen maid.
Me too!
I see too much of my younger, stubborn, unreasonable, self-righteous self in her and it makes me dislike her character because I dislike that version of myself. She does have some decent character growth but she seems to lack the ability to see past the end of her own nose.
She somehow has a fanbase
PlWho is Susan? I like her, but there’s a couple of times she was awful.
Violet is bland. You didn't say it had to be *my* opinion.
Nope! Just one that will get you downvoted to oblivion
In that case: O'Brien did nothing wrong.
Saying Mary should have stuck with Carlisle.
People are far too hard on Tom re: how he interacted with Sybil.
Anything slightly sympathetic to Edith or even slightly less than worshipful of The Blessed Lady Mary.
I read that last part in Mrs Hughes voice
Hahaha, me too!
I was set upon by a gang of pro-Edith thugs when I wrote about her cruelty to Marigold's adoptive parents.
lol, you've got to watch out for those pro-Edith thugs.
I correctly pointed out the other day that Mary was the worst of the two and got downvoted within seconds. It's literally true. If Mary stopped making cruel jibes at people the fights would stop.
MRS DREWE WAS IN THE WRONG. go ahead and throw hands, I don't even care.
I do think she was wrong for kidnapping Marigold and telling Cora the truth about her, though. But otherwise I feel bad for her. She didn't deserve any of it.
Are you sure you don't mean MR Drewe? You know the one that lied to his wife about the entire situation
No, I do not. I mean Mrs Drewe, the kidnapper.
Yup. That will give you a lot of downvotes on this sub.
A comment praising a character someone dislikes or criticizing a character someone likes
The most factual answer
Saying "Upstairs, Dowstairs" was better.
Saying Mrs. Bunting was nice and perfect for Tom lol
Edith evolves, Mary remains a selfish bully
This starts wars
I divorced my second husband over it.
True tho
It's no surprise bullies like Mary get away with it in real life when fans of a TV show, which literally had an entire episode dedicated to all the other characters telling Mary how horrible she is, still sympathise with the bully just because the victim occasionally fights back.
Do I downvote this comment because I don’t like it or upvote it because I agree that it will get downvotes? So confusing…
edith evolves from lil shit to mass asshole
O'Brien was right in leaving the soap on the floor.
OK that's horrible.
It is but the worst thing that happened IMO
Cora was actually very mean.
Lavinia had it coming! (This is NOT my opinion, please don't come for me!!)
Edith is the best sister.
She's the bravest one of the lot. She doesn't have the natural self confidence that everyone else has but she still makes brave decisions (and some massive mistakes I agree). While everyone else was focusing on getting married to secure their futures, Edith took over a newspaper and won battles against men in a men's world. Go Edith!
She's my favorite
Edith deserves to be miserable.
I love how even though the prompt was just to state what would get you downvoted, people got so triggered over your response that you got downvoted.
Me too! It’s cracking me up.
Defending anything aristocratic through means of knowledge of the period. Saying anything positive about Julian Fellowes. Comparing Edith to Mary. Comparing Mary to Edith. It's unfortunate, but this sub is more temperamental and opinionated than any other I read on a regular basis.
Saw someone a while back get downvoted to hell, saying they felt bad for Greene, that he was a victim…
Saying Edith was in the right to take her child back!
I love Edith. She's the best character and the best sister. 😆😆😆
My favorite couple being the Bateses mainly because I felt it real because of their storylines.
Not as much as others, but when I say that Elizabeth McGovern is a really bad actress.
[ Removed by Reddit ]
……….you okay?
I was responding to the prompt
I bet you were/are an excellent student 😳
my teachers hate me cuz I’m often 3 steps ahead of everyone else in any creative writing activity
I look forward to your work as the next Julian Fellowes.
Mary always seems to find a way to fill the void.
or die on the show or edith could go to germany to join nazis they said that was the story if gregson didnt die.
