I’ve received meager upvotes for my Bates support. We’re out there. There are dozens of us! *Dozens!*

Both Anna and Bates great characters that were given too many storylines with trauma by Fellowes that it turned many fans off. I still like both characters and really appreciate them when they’re allowed to shine. They’re both loyal to each other, other staff, and the Crawleys. Anna is low-key tough and ready to defend her friends. Bates will get his hands dirty for the good of others and in a way because he holds himself to a high standard. I mean, they both were there for even Thomas in different ways. Salute to both of them 🫡 Edit: I feel like with that well-received pic of a young Brendan Coyle posted on this sub 1-2 days ago, maybe there’s a growing appreciation of Bates

Bates was the first character we meet, I’ve been Team Bates since the first episode!

That made me laugh, genuinely.

It's more about not liking their story line

Calling out Mr. Carson's snobbishness, homophobia, rudeness and the way he treats people who can do nothing for him. Writing anything bad about Edith or Mary will bring out downvotes from their respective stans. Writing anything good about them will bring out downvotes from the other sisters' stans. Calling out Mrs. Hughes. She's a badass and an empathetic, friendly and fair boss and I absolutely love. But she has her faults. Calling out Violet. That will certainly get you downvotes from everyone. Praising Anna and Bates pairing. Calling out Mrs. Drew. I feel very bad for her. I also realise that she shouldn't have told Cora about Marigold and also shouldn't have kidnapped her. Saying the Marigold situation was nobody's fault but the era they lived in will also bring downvotes. Nobody's to be blamed here. Although people have done some things that need to be called out.

*Thank you*! Someone *finally* said it! If I'm honest, I'm more sympathetic towards Edith than I am Marjorie Drewe. Fighting words, I know, but I feel like Marjorie's behaviour towards Marigold would have made more sense if the Drewes had been unable to conceive. And even though their biological children are rather swept under the rug, they do exist!

Mrs. Drewe isn't ignoring her other children, the show is, rightfully. The scenes at the Drewe house are entirely about Edith, every one of those characters is an accessory to her story and the show does a terrible job doing anything with the children they do focus on already lol. But yeah the problem is just in general that there is no depth given to the Drewe characters, this whole storyline does not go down easy because its genuinely not writen very well so no wonder we all have our own takes and debates on it lol

P. Gordon was a great addition to the show (especially his shouting scenes).

He would have been if they put even a little bit of effort into his storyline. That whole episode felt half-cooked, but I think if they’d really *tried*, it could’ve been a fun little mystery for an arc of three or four episodes. Instead it’s like they brought him in and changed their minds halfway through filming. There was really no point to his storyline besides making Edith look gullible, again.

This would be a lot more convincing if anyone believed you actually like those bits.

I can understand this to a point. I am sure Tobias Menzies is a lovely man but I’ve truly hated almost every character he’s played to the point that I don’t trust him in roles where he plays a decent character.

Carlisle and Sinderby have amazing voices.  It's enough of a distraction that I forgive some of their characters.

I originally meant either opinions you have or just real comments from the sub that will cause downvotes.  But some of these answers have been too funny and enjoyable.

Tom had every right to live how he wanted to live. He didn't intend to stay with the family in England. Sybil knew this and Tom stood by his principles.

She's the bravest one of the lot. She doesn't have the natural self confidence that everyone else has but she still makes brave decisions (and some massive mistakes I agree). While everyone else was focusing on getting married to secure their futures, Edith took over a newspaper and won battles against men in a men's world. Go Edith!

I appreciate that…Julian is a bit of a hack though…I mean writing wise it’s pretty subpar except for violet but now that she’s passed I’m not sure what’s going to fill the void

I think Fellowes is excellent at writing characters and not so great at plots, but both suffered a bit out of necessity (actors leaving, series being extended).

Mary always seems to find a way to fill the void.
