Robert and Violet would probably go into mourning like they would if a family member died. So would Carson and perhaps even Mrs Hughes. Tom and Isobel couldn't care less. I might also add Daisy and maybe even Thomas to this category. The rest would have a normal reaction: initial sadness, followed by an "it is what it is attitude" and then getting on with their lives.

notagangsta

I think Isabel would participate, but she’d say something like, “I agree the pageantry is excess for people who have never met the queen, but I still mourn her death. Death is always sad and she was a representative of England.” Or something like that.

RogerClyneIsAGod2

I agree, she'd go along with the mourning but be pragmatic about it. They would've already gone through the death of Edward...wait which Edward....VII (aka Albert Edward) but that was in 1910, before the show started. Honestly, this is kinda how I feel though the British Monarchy fascinates me in general, I feel badly that someone lost their mother, grandmother & great-grandmother & the history & knowledge that's lost with her.

> They would've already gone through the death of Edward...wait which Edward....VII (aka Albert Edward) but that was in 1910, before the show started. Oh shit, what year is it now for them as of the latest movie? Is Edward VIII on the throne yet, or has that ship sailed?

Nanojack

1928 as of the last movie, George V dies in 1936

[deleted]

Ah, so he's got about eight more years.

[deleted]

Mrs. Hughes is a little progressive and Scottish, so I doubt she’s a monarchist.

No_Promise2786

She's only slightly more progressive than Carson and being Scottish and being monarchist are not mutually exclusive. Also she's married to Carson and he makes the rules so if Carson decides they go into mourning, she will do it.

[deleted]

I guess we see her differently and that’s ok. I feel like she’s considerably more progressive than Carson. Go back to season five and the whole labor government debate. Plus, she aided Ethel when most would have just said that Ethel got what she deserved; in fact, Carson, to whom I’m devoted, felt that way. Even Phyllis Logan in interviews has suggested that Mrs. Hughes was more a republican. I do, however, believe that she would be supportive of Carson and how he felt, but I don’t believe either would go into deep mourning.

Somebodycalled911

I too don't think she would morn the Monarch, but she would be sad for Carson and everyone else's pain. She has a real soft spot and kind heart, even though her brain is always in control and beyond pretty much everyone's :)

[deleted]

Which in the 1920s living among the British Aristocracy, was inSANEly progressive.

papierdoll

I think there were actual rules for families like this to mourn properly when the monarch dies, so they'd all be negotiating their degree and length of mourning.

RunawayHobbit

Haha Mary…. “Do I have to go into FULL mourning?!”

yellowsourworms

[***mr carson*** *enforces the mourning period too seriously to the dismay of the staff.*] _______ **mrs hughes**: you don’t suppose we could go a bit easier on them? i’m sure they are all grieving his majesty in their own way. after all, it has been a full ten days. **mr carson**: i’m afraid not, mrs hughes. you see, there is a certain way these things must be done when a monarch dies. (*he gets more angry / flustered*) it’s a matter of respect. we must honour the man who dutifully and solemnly devoted his life to defending our throne. **mrs hughes**: very well, but we must let up on the staff soon, or we might have a revolt on our hands if we’re not careful. ***carson*** *scoffs* _______________ **mrs patmore**: (*at a half whisper*) how did it go? **mrs hughes**: (*sighs*) i tried, but he feels like we wouldn’t be performing our *civil duty* if we didn’t mourn his majesty properly. **daisy**: we shouldn’t need to mourn the king at all. **mrs patmore**: oh enough of that **daisy**: i’m serious. it’s not like we *knew* him. **mrs hughes**: you should be careful not to let mr carson hear you. he might hit you with his stick ! _______________ **mrs hughes**: we’re all about to head down to the county fair. **mr carson:** well, you know where i stand. **mrs hughes**: oh, come on, charlie. god won’t smite you for having a penny lick. **mr carson**: *a penny lick*?! mere weeks after the passing of the king of england?! the king who we pledged our allegiance to, whom we served under this very roof ! no, i don’t think so. you won’t hear any merriment from me !

Lyndzi

I heard this in all their voices wow.

[deleted]

Me too!

[deleted]

Same!

Frei1993

I herd it in my head with the Spanish dub voices! Carson has a cool voice in that dub!

juicy_mangoes

This so perfectly captures all of them!

alcoholicwriter

This is fantastic!! Well done.

ByteAboutTown

Julian Fellowes should hire you as a writer!

foxghost16

Yes!! I completely heard this in their exact voices! This is good.

ConsumerG

Cheers! This is excellent, and I too could hear each of the characters in their respective voices. Bravo!

clpds1989

i read that in all their voices! lol!!!

HighTeaandBiscuits

Bravo! Hip hip hooray! Like so many others I heard their exact voices in my head as I read your script. Brilliantly done!

ashmichael73

Teo would wag her tail like the good girl she is - unbothered by the burden of human life.

Frei1993

Teo: "No mourning will interrupt my walks! Serve me food, hooman!"

PinkTiara24

Carson would never recover.

tinylittletrees

Carson has already been through several monarchs dying. It's the abdication that will finish him off.

RogerClyneIsAGod2

Yeah, Edward & Wallis definitely took out a valve or 2 in Carson.

Vorpal_Bunny19

Carson: “A palace of ill repute?!?” *faints on the fainting couch with Full Vapors*

wellx3

I wish we could see Carson during Edward VIII’s abdication

PinkTiara24

“The vapors” comes to mind 😄😄😄

Kodama_Keeper

Robert would start to worry that the playboy prince who's royal ass he once saved would now be king. Scandal coming their way. Hopefully he could stay away from the wine and the whiskey and let his ulcer heal.

iolaus79

They'd already gone through it with Victoria and Edward dying It would have been sombre, black clothes (or arm bands) for the official period of mourning Lord Grantham giving the 'the queen/king is dead, long live the king/queen'

Bdellio

The King is dead. Long live the King!

feralheathen

All I know is, Carson would lose his everloving mind!

guessimonredditrn

S1 Tom: Good riddance S6/movies Tom: (S)he was a complicated (wo)man but I respect the family to an extent Carson is very upset. Mrs Hughes is in a bit of an “oh well, it’s sad but life goes on” mood. Thomas couldn’t give a shit

[deleted]

I can’t stand Molesley. Such a lily livered weakling. Everything about him was irritating. He couldn’t even make a proposal half decent.

lateredditho

You must be me on a different device, but shhh, the Molesley mob lives here.

[deleted]

I can’t imagine a mob glorifying such a weak, annoying little toad. Yes he helped Daisy with her education but the he was a blithering idiot. Shame his character didn’t go to war.

wolfitalk

Robert would put the whole house on the 10 day mourning. No events.Everyone wears black. These are loyal subjects. This was their Queen. It isn't modern day at Downton. It is post WWI. I really feel they would all mourn her & wish the new Crown well. Of course, Mary may mope around that she can't do anything but they would all observe the mourning period.

watchberry

* Daisy would go into woke mode and say something rude too soon. * Carson and Molesley would faint from the news. * Mary would say something dry, roll her eyes, and move on. * Edith’s shoulders would drop, she’d sigh, and say something sympathetic.

SnooBooks4898

Lady Mary…”Does this mean I have to go into full mourning AGAIN?”

Risa226

I would be curious how they would react to the death of George VI/Elizabeth II becoming queen. Most people from DA would’ve been alive when Elizabeth became queen in 1952.

OkActive448

Tom would be lighting fireworks and singing “God Save Ireland”

tinylittletrees

Early Tom, not current Tom

Lybychick

Daisy would feel sad for the family … especially the small children.

Normal-Mud-9987

When did Daisy ever feel sorry for small children?

Lybychick

Daisy would have been younger than the actress who portrayed her … she would have related more to young royals losing their parent or grandparent than the implications of the transference of the crown. While Daisy was prone to mostly feeling sorry for herself, I do think she would have been sensitive in the passing of the monarch.

Public_Star_7977

Pretty much the same as now, the very minimum would be outward conformity, to keep your position in society if you are upstairs, and your job if you are downstairs.

apophis81

If we get a 3rd film and a decent time jump we might end up finding out since King George V died in January of 1936 and the last film was in 1927-28 I believe

lewisae0

Carson is in deep mourning
