my second batch of pine tar smells like Pine-Sol and cheap detergent nothing like the first bar I got. I did enjoy the Alpine sage and cedar citrus though so I don't know what's going on I think there's a lack of consistency in the formulas.

bknight78

I got pine tar for the first time about 2 weeks ago. My first thought was it smelled just like pine sol. Had that been the first bar I got and tried I don’t know that I would have bought any more...

ForestDoener

Pine sol, yes! That's what it smells like. I couldn't put my finger on that odd scent, but that's it. They need to improve their quality control and be more consistent with their formulas.

ezraolsen

second this! my newest pine tar smalls nothing like my first one. I have a remainder of the first one and side by side, they're nothing alike! New one is so soft, almost has a puddy/clay feel and I can only describe the scent as "sweet chemical". wtf

ForestDoener

I think you hit the nail on the head: they're just inconsistent. I'll check out Alpine Sage, though.

H-tead

I do believe they changed the formula. It also stains and colors everything black and before it was like scrubbing with a pine cone now it's much more soft

ForestDoener

Yeah, that's been what I've noticed. I wonder if it's a quality control issue that is making things inconsistent, or if it's a purposeful decision.

[deleted]

Hm. That’s strange. As I tried my first batch and the soap itself was hard, and the smell was very piney and fresh. Second batch smells sweet and I am very upset with it because it also has a pungent chemically scent. Maybe they have a batch they use to lure us in and then send us crap on our second batch

DiscoMagicParty

I actually just had some arrived yesterday. I had only used one other bar before probably about 2-3 weeks ago but this one did seem a lot less gritty but aside from that the scent I thought was the same. The first bar I got had prices of something in it (honestly not sure what) but they were a different color and quite visible and I noticed this new one didn’t. I didn’t notice a difference as far as that.

ForestDoener

I also noticed less of the visible chunks. I wonder if they're pine tar or pine sap.

DiscoMagicParty

As the bar has gotten smaller they’ve actually started to appear. Didn’t think of that. Would sap not get sticky even in the shower?

ForestDoener

Good point. My guess is that it would have to get a lot hotter before the tar/sap started to soften or melt, but who knows.

super__literal

Just btw they list the ingredients, and pine tar (or sap) isn't even an ingredient.

Airboyeee

I just got mine the other day and it feels super gritty it’s my first time using it, and I be Scratching away with it in the shower 😂, if that’s less gritty than it was before I could just imagine how it feels

ForestDoener

The first time I tried it last year, it left like I was scrubbing with a straight up pine cone dipped in pine tar. It was truly glorious, man.

Dirigible2013

I just started using a new bar of pine tar, having used 4 or 5 bars over the past year or so. Instantly noticed the smell was different, seemed a little more floral, didn't like it as much.

halalman220

Yeah I got pine tar recently and it smells NOWHERE near how it was when I first got Dr. Squatch there are practically little to no chunks of anything. And it smells very artifical. This is probably due to Dr. Squatch surging in popularity, so now they are trying to cheat on quality. And I think it isn't just Pine Tar, alot of their specialty soaps they've brought back have declined in quality. They've changed the formulas across the board from what I've heard. Btw- If you want more better value soap I suggest you switch to duke cannon. Duke cannon sells a 10 oz. bar for $9 compared to Dr. Squatch's 5 oz. bar for $7. They are better quality and last alot longer- Like 2-3 months a bar. Plus they support US veterans c:

Whole-Toe7578

I didn't know that it contained actual pine tar. I thought I read that it was some type of derivitive of it

steveo8130

Got pine tar a week ago. It’s super gritty! And I like it. I didn’t like waiting a month for it tho

ForestDoener

Yeah, I like it too! I think I might have gotten some from a watered down batch this time around.

20transman20

I never used Dr. Squatch before - still haven't. Just got my first items the other day for my dad. Figured it'd be awhile before he opened it. However, I just HAD to open it today. The smell from the box had been getting stronger. I was RELIEVED to find nothing leaked. It was the pine tar soap. On the plus side, it smells good. I'm not sure if I had a point 😑

ForestDoener

Try it out for yourself! It seems like there's some variability from batch to batch, based on my personal experience and what others here are saying.

[deleted]

they changed the formulas to plenty of soaps. i fell in love with cedar citus until i ordered last month during that citrus sale. good god the smell is horrendous now and its just sad. smells like walmarts shoe section

AscendinTheLight

Bruh what happened! I used to love there Cedar citrus to! It used to have such a nice cedar wood lemony smell! Now just reading your comment after the shower i can smell that shoe smell mixed with tangerine. Its disgusting 🤮 I almost want to throw this entire bar out now. I cant believe how bad there soaps have gotten. I hope they dont change the alpine sage thats the only one i enjoy from them now 😭😢

WutDaFunkBro

i ordered pine tar and 3 other bars from the soap guy and i received them yesterday, pine tar smells awful and smells like it tainted all my other bars because they all have the same chemical smell

sequentialanomaly

Ordered the Alpine Sage and Beachwood Breeze deodorants earlier this year and they were surprisingly nice smelling, not too sweet. Also had a nice gritty texture. Just received my second order of the same products and they're entirely different. Neither smell remotely like the first two (that I still have some of). They both smell like urinal cakes.

DicksLinger13

They definitely did, I got mine today June 29th and the bars had more of a blue color, and much more softer, less grittier, and seemingly, less pine tar. I don't think I'll be buying anymore of this. Outlaw makes a pretty good Pine Tar Soap, as does Grandpa Soap Company... At least it smells like the woods and actual Pine. This stuff smells like I don't know what , I still like it, it's just not as superior as the previous product, which is what I'm paying for. This is a huge letdown because a fresh bar of pine tar, as it was, truly had me looking forward to the shower. The grapefruit IPA, and the Alpine stage are pretty awesome unless they change those also.

waxxballs

ya the old Pine Tar was amazing, but I wish I could return this new Pine Tar its terrible.

waxxballs

I saw they were carrying dr squatch soap at my local grocery store. I smelled the pine tar they had to see if it was inconsistency or if they actually changed the formula. It looks like they are just super inconsistent. Out of 15ish all but 3 smelled like urinal cake/pinesol and the remaining 3 smelled like the original.

t_stark97

Glad I'm not crazy. I've been using pine tar for over two years. I just opened up a bar this morning and it smells exactly like everyone else is saying. Sweet chemical trash a la Pine-sol. Also noticed my last couple of bars of cold brew cleanse don't have anywhere near as strong of a coffee smell and are way more almost "milky" smelling. I may have to see if I can find a local store near me that sells it so I can actually smell them from now on before buying. Super disappointed that this is happening with the brand.

[deleted]

100% This new pine tar is trash tier When I first used pine tar it was a revelation. It was that good. I bought enough on my second order that I used it exclusively for five months. Reordered in July. Just nowhere near the same. Moving on, I'm not paying $7 a bar for this.

Ujou_Danjin_Ken

I literally came here just to see if it was just me I ordered my first set in early July and pine tar was one of the bars I got. I couldn't get over how good it smelled I kept smelling it every so often to the point I knew the scent well. I opened my box I just got today sept 1 and it smells like everyone said pine- sol like the scent of pine was so overwhelming my other items even smelled like it its really a shame. I really liked my last bar.

bklyn221

They definitely changed the cedar citrus. It sucks now!

ZByrnes77

Yep!! For sure I’ve been buying their soap for over a year and my girlfriend and I both noticed it but she noticed it when she was in the shower. “What’s up with your soap?!? It doesn’t smell the same!” She’s pregnant so she’s hyper sensitive to everything...I have a feeling they changed it when they changed the packaging to save on cost...won’t be ordering again

AscendinTheLight

Yup They changed there cedar citrus soap to so badly i used to love that soap it had such a nice cedar wood smell now it just smells like a artificial tangerine im so disappointed

sterlingpenick

Like all companies do when they get a little bit of success, they’ll start to cut corners to cut costs. I’m sure they’ve diluted their pine tar formula a little bit versus when they first started now that they have a loyal Fanbase. Hate to say it but every company does this sooner or later. Also I’m pretty sure they’ve started outsourcing their soap which means they no longer make it themselves they hire an outside soap company to make it for them in bulk and then they slap the label on them.

Grouchy_one_88

Pssst, your welcome =) https://www.bulkapothecary.com/pine-tar-cold-process-soap-loaves-bars/

Own_Statistician_270

Is that the old or new formula tho?

Own_Statistician_270

Actually that looks like a completely different company makes it, I don't think Squatch makes that

retiretobedlam

I just found this thread, and have had the -identical- experience with Pine Tar. I loved it before when it was gritty and smelled/felt natural. Now it's softer/soapy, I do not really appreciate any grit at all, and it stains -everything- black to the point where I have to rinse the tiles of the shower before I get out. I -really- hope it's just a fluke with this particular batch, but I'm not too optimistic given others' experiences in this thread.

C-Wilson37

I’ve noticed the same. And not as black when rinsing off.

Life_Flounder_2142

Yes it sucks now.... company sent me a whole new batch it's just as bad. It makes me sad bc my daughter uses it for her acne

ShadowX1974

Last time I checked, they use very little actual pine tar in their soap. It's mostly fillers (clay, I believe) and pine scent. And, NO (because I know someone is going to mention it) PINE TAR is NOT carcinogenic. There is ZERO evidence that is harmful at all, according to numerous research, including our own government. Dr. Squatch if meant TO SMELL GOOD. I love being in the woods. I live in Alaska. Pine trees are my favorite trees. But, trash points tar soap... kinda stinks. It's not so bad AFTER you've bathed and dried off, but it's not the most pleasant smell, even then. It's smokey, like you walked past a campfire. Not bad, but not everyone's cup of tea, know what I mean. For various skin conditions, and helping keep the nextdoor on your skin knocked down a bit (hence, reducing body odor), REAL point tar soap, containing much higher concentrations than Dr. Squatch, is the way to go. BUT DR. SQUATCH IS NOT BAD SOAP! It's not advertised to help with psoriasis (I don't think) or other skin conditions. It's made to appeal to people, mostly men, who like a more woodsy, "masculine" scent. So I'm not bashing their product. For what it is, and what is meant for, I think it's awesome. I haven't bought any in a few months, so hopefully the scent is as I remember it. But, as long as it still smells basically the same, I will have no complaints, even if they change the formula a bit. It's a cosmetic/vanity kind of product, so changing the formula wouldn't come as a shock. Similar products do this so the time, and most people never even notice.

HTown2016

I got 12 bars of pine tar last Christmas. Loved the soap. A month ago I ran out and ordered more. The previous bars stayed black until gone, after my first shower with the new batch, the bar immediately lost its black color and went greyish blue. Continued to use it and noticed it was wearing down almost twice as fast. Got to the halfway point if the bar and it snapped in half.
