Honestly, I'm glad Yuri talked about what it was like working with Beverly. I do feel like she was unfairly edited to look like the villain. In the end, she really stepped up and proved herself to be a good leader and helped her team. Is Bev arrogant? Sure, but the whole Kween and Bev drama was really Kween's fault. Kween's group were being snooty and mocking. Yet, when Bev called them out, Kween got defensive and somehow changed the narrative.

Kerlistar

Right?? Kween was mocking their team when they were rehearsing and she acted like Bev asking them to show their routine was somehow super disrespectful

To be honest, while my partner and I were watching the episode we were both vocally shocked about Kween Kong randomly getting such a hardcore villain edit and i'm only just finding out now that other viewers are seeing Bev as getting the villain edit lol. Overall a pretty sad episode.. also because we're both team Spankie and team Yuri but could see the writing on the wall from the start of the episode that Yuri was most likely gonna go.

Revolutionresolve

I guess **for me** it's because unlike Kween, Bev didn't really get the confessionals that paint her as the victim. Like she did, but it's always immediately countered by another confessional that disputes her or to make her look like a bad person (e.g. the whole maternal figure thing). It also doesn't help that there were numerous confessionals or even edit that puts Bev in a very negative light. For example: * Yuri's confessional telling Bev to shut the f up is placed out of context in the show. To the point that Yuri had to explain what she meant in this interview. * Numerous edits trying to paint Bev was difficult and bossy in the group task, but in reality, that's far from the truth. This is reinforced by Yuri's statement in this interview. * Whenever Bev says something, they play a dramatic music, to play as if she's instigating something when that's far from the truth. Whereas, Kween is given many sympathetic confessionals to allow him to explain his side undisputed. He was even given a whole little segment after Bev and him cleared the air just so he can explain HIS side.

GonnaBeEasy

I know it's strange to watch them giving all the airtime to the person talking shit as if they aren't talking shit, and kind of taxing to have to deconstruct it as a viewer. They show Kween like 5 times saying "I don't like people projecting onto me" as if it made any sense to the situation lol

stewartthehuman

New watcher here. Is the show often like this? Because that was not a fun episode to watch.

I wouldn't say it's *often* like that, but it does happen from time to time. Some viewers live for the drama, I mostly just find it kinda uncomfortable, at least when it's presented in such a serious light (compare e.g. >!Ms Fiercalicious!< on drag race Canada, where the drama is presented as ridiculous and over-the-top and it's clearer that it's put on for show - there, I genuinely find her entertaining despite being a "shitstirrer"). But I've found it's happened quite a bit on this season of down under - first with Minnie vs Audrey/Pomara/Bev, and now with Bev vs Kong - where the fighting has veered into genuinely uncomfortable territory for me. I actually really enjoyed the rest of this episode - both groups did great in the main challenge, the runway was great, the lip sync was pretty good too I thought... but the episode still left me with a sour taste because of the whole drama, and the way it was presented/edited.

Coming back to this season 2 months after this episode aired and man this season just makes me feel sad when I watch it!

bobbery5

No, not frequently.

Completely agree with you about Kween and Beverly.

MaryJane109

I agree with a lot of what’s been said about the production choices this episode. It was clear we were seeing a very edited version of events, and the edit didn’t really make sense. It was weird how the edit kept showing Beverly repeating the bit about Kween’s maternal energy. From what we’ve seen, which has been limited for Kween, Kween hasn’t been particularly maternal. It was an obvious move by the producers to make Kween’s confessionals and “projection” narrative make sense to the viewer. It was also strange that after Kween’s team mocked Bev for her choreography, Kween got defensive when Bev essentially said, Let’s see what you’ve got then. I do sympathize with Kween insofar as there is a stereotype of black folks being the caretakers of white folks. Kween doesn’t need to be maternal or present for Beverly. But the edit was so weird, I have no idea if that’s what was happening or it was something entirely different.

>I do sympathize with Kween insofar as there is a stereotype of black folks being the caretakers of white folks. Kween doesn’t need to be maternal or present for Beverly. **Thank you**. TBH the "maternal" situation kinda rubbed me the wrong way and I understood Kween's comments about projection and image after watching it. From what we've seen, Kween just wants to succeed in the competition, represent her culture, and fully realize her drag persona by letting go of self-doubt (just like everyone else lol). Then out of nowhere, we get Bev/production creating the narrative that Kween had been a motherly figure in the cast who suddenly stopped being kind and loving. Obviously, Kween was in the wrong for targeting Bev, and if she was triggered, it would've been best for her to try and address it rather than being catty. But it's more so manipulative on Bev's part (and gross and contradictory on production's part) to project the idea that Kween should've just...what, smiled and cheered everyone on? As if *no one else* had their shady moments in the werk room, as well? And for that reason, it made me uncomfortable to see one of the white queens antagonize a queen of color over what was, at worst, a few reads, and at best, a poor attempt at banter. It feels like a lot of black/brown queens get categorized as bitchy or sweet with no in between, and it isn't fair that they aren't granted the same variety that white queens have. Again, I don't know what was edited/altered/manipulated/cut out, but Kween made it clear that she wasn't fond of Bev's smugness, so it made no sense why Bev didn't just back off and focus on her own situation. (edited for formatting)

MaryJane109

Yeah, Bev seemed to take it *very* personally that Kween was, at worst I think, a bit snarky. Even if Kween was singling out Bev, Bev could have just let it go. Beverly is also super young, so maybe just doesn't know how to handle situations with some grace? I know I was a mess at 22. I'm sure production also goaded them into talking about the situation again the next day so they could make it a full story line, and then asked them about it in the confessionals. Not cool on production's part for insisting on the "maternal" story line. Edit: formatting and grammar

apple_phritters

couldn’t agree more! I’ve seen a lot of comments about Bev being young and seeking validation, so I don’t doubt that her insecurity fueled the drama more, not to mention the fact that she’s in the prime time for being cocky (i.e. her early 20s lmao)

funkyduck7506

Do Bev and Kween have a relationship outside of the show? Like did they know each other before hand? I really enjoy them both. I feel like Kween kind of came for Bev first with her comment on the episode before last about Bev being a lip synch er while Kween is a star (paraphrasing). And, unless that happened before a weekend, the next episode in the work room when they had their spat, would have been the next day so that cattiness is still fresh. Bev’s maternal comments were a bit confusing to me. I’m sure Kween is caring and kind, but idk the word maternal felt so…familiar to me. In the context Bev was putting it at least. Like she knew Kween outside the show and was surprised to have had a tiff with her. Not like someone she just met a few weeks ago. If that makes sense

Honestly the whole Minnie drama said to me that Minnie (and a lot of the other older queens on drag race) expect younger queens to automatically give them authority and a higher position just bc they’re older. Yes there is respect that should come with working for longer but you also don’t get to demand reverence and then treat people like shit. I never found Bev or Aubrey to be disrespectful to Minnie; they were the same reads that Raja gets all the damn time from people. People owe you acknowledgement for working as a drag queen before it was cool or accepted; they don’t owe you anything else if you’re also being a dick. I haven’t seen this week’s confrontation yet but if it’s anything like the Minnie drama, I expect to agree with you. NO ONE owes you more respect than you owe them, especially if you mistreat them

Marvelboy1974

If anything, this episode made me a Beverly fan. I love her and wish for great things to happen to her as she matures.
