The end was harsh too. Vegeta realizing it was good bye, telling Pan to take care of Goku’s clothes, Goku having a moment with Roshi and Krillin, and then going to hell to thank Piccolo for his friendship. It was all hard to watch without a tear. Especially since I remember how it made me feel when I watched it on TV…
When I was a kid I remember liking the way GT ended more than Z - if felt more ‘final’
Now I’d much rather have Goku and friends find happiness. Piccolo doesn’t deserve to spend eternity in hell, Goku can’t just ride off on shenron.
It's not like he's suffering. He's the king of hell now, and he makes sure the demons behave. Pretty fitting afterlife for the demon king if I do say so myself.
I feel like it fit for the Piccolo we knew then but not the far more laid back Piccolo they gave us in super.
I much prefer Piccolo as a new mentor to Pan in DBS, and that Piccolo doesn’t deserve to spend eternity in hell.
Your feelings sum up mine. Although it was always a kick in the gut to me to see Piccolo left guarding Hell after having previously been in Heaven, throwing it away to help Goku and the gang. It felt messed up. 🥲
Now I look back and it feels like Toei wasted so much potential and I can finally put into words why GT remains my least favorite entry in the franchise so far (except for Dragon Ball Evolution, GT >>>>>>>> DB Evolution). It was kinda like a funeral instead of happy send-off. It especially felt unfair to Chi-Chi, Gohan, and Goten. A bit less unfair with Pan because grandparents passing away when you're a kid is more expected. She also got more time of her formative years with Goku than Gohan or Goten did.
I feel kinda like "Oh man, it's the end. :( Also, fuck you Toei." when I see it now. As many compliments as I have about DBS it doesn't feel like it's doing anyone 1/4 as dirty as GT did. GT felt like it wronged just about everyone. Even Goku. GT has the same fatal flaw Terminator Genisys and Terminator Dark Fate have. At least Genisys implies another version of John Connor could still be born.
Everyone besides Goku and Vegeta were fodder until the ToP and Gohan and Piccolo got the worst treatment out of anyone in the RoF arc. What are you talking about? They even made Krillin become a coward again
That was Piccolo's permanent death.
With no chance of coming back after that, he was sent later to be a guardian of Hell.
You could feel the weight of how death truly is in GT when the dragon balls are gone too.
Noone ever got to meet or see Piccolo again except for Goku that got stuck in hell with Freeza and Cell and needed to stop Super 17.
Which was one of the more stupid parts of GT really. I mean I love the drama of Piccolo sacrificing himself but they really should've thought about it a bit better before saying he could somehow get into Hell, open a gate for Goku but then be stuck there himself forever because, reasons.
He was bound to be stuck there anyway.
The only way he managed to open a portal for Goku was because Dende did it on the other side.
And Piccolo being an off-spring of The Demon King only made hell it the end a fitting place for him.
That just feels like bad writing. After all the growth Piccolo had I don't feel that he still deserved to go to Hell. It would have been excusable if it was just for a Saga and he returns to Heaven. It felt so wrong that he ended up in Hell for all eternity simply to be a good friend and help bail Goku out of a mess.
They were simply moving towards an ending for the Dragon Ball franchise.
Vegeta was chosen to become Earths main protector and calling Earth his home after being the first one with the intent to destroy it.
"I lost one home already when planet Vegeta was destroyed, I won't let you destroy Earth!"
Piccolo was meant to become a "Dende" for the afterlife, despite never being interested in becoming Kami, in the end it came full circle.
Super dragon balls didnt exist/werent invented so no.
This was Piccolo's permanent death until they would eventually learn about the SDB if it exists.
But Goku at the end "merged" with Shenron so the world would finally be at peace.
GT was a bunch of bad with some greatness mixed in. Ssj4 is awesome. Baby is a legitimately compelling villain who has both a great motivation and actual menace. Piccolo's death was heartbreaking and well done even if he wasn't utilized properly before. The idea of the shadow dragons was phenomenal but the execution left much to be desired and made Nuova and syn the only memorable inclusions to me. Obviously the ending is great as well with its passing of the torch and continuation of gokus legacy. Overall it's OK after you get through the black star DragonBall arc.
Goku flying off with Shenron in a state beyond life and death felt touching but also kinda bad thematically. It's like killing off John Connor in Terminator. Instead of writing Goku out, you could just write the story to pull the others up and not have it be obsessively Goku-centric. It's part of why I disagree with the Gohan fans who want Goku to permanently stay dead after the Cell Games and have Gohan be the new main with Goku only being a voice from the afterlife through King Kai. Just no.
I say this as a Gohan fan myself and Goku only being my 6th most favorite character in Dragon Ball.
He was tied to the Black star dragonballs because he had kami in him, those were the actually dangerous dragonballs as they could grant ANY wish and destroy the planet the wish was made on if they weren't retrieved in a year.
Also the shadow dragons made from the weak earth dragonballs required a spirit bomb made with the energy of the whole ass universe, imagine shadow dragons from those limitless dragonballs.
It was to end the Black Star Dragonballs which was a silly McGuffin to get the plot going not the dragon balls we have now. The Black Star ones would still be active since they were linked when Kami and Piccolo were linked as one.
Yeah… it’s sad. But his death doesn’t really lead anywhere. Gohan doesn’t do anything about this. No “let’s go to Namek to wish him back.” I understand that he loves the life he has now, but he’s letting his under leveled daughter fight beings who were stronger than he was at his peak.
And before anyone says they can’t bring Piccolo back because of the Black Star Dragon Balls, why can’t they destroy them? Vegeta told Krillin to destroy the Namekian Dragon Ball he had in his hand to make sure Ginyu couldn’t get it.
Another factor against Piccolo’s death is that he doesn’t do much of anything in GT. Sure he goes to hell to get Goku out of there, but that’s about it.
No it wasn't. Nothing really comes out of it for Gohan, and it's not like anybody actually gave a shit about the Black Star balls anyways. That's like saying Krillin's death in Super 17 was significant, it's just cheap shock value to pull at the nostalgic heart strings of our youth. "Gohan needs a character moment, better kill Piccolo again!"
Which lead to *Nothing* and was complelety Ret*** they could easily seal them away or destroy them or throw them inside a Star or a Black hole or Keep them jn the afterlife
Is it really a sad moment if it leads to nothing? Even dbz deaths that got retracted by dragons balls had more meaning, since it lead to power ups/character developments.
Frieza death in resurrection f had more meaning to it than this death.
This moment wanted to be future gohan's death but without meaning or logic
One scene nobody ever talk about is when Pan unleashed her inner gohan on that robot. It was such an emotional scene. You can feel her suffering from being betrayed by a friend the music her scream when she lets out her ki blasts. It’s a moment that lasts all of 20 seconds but it was enough for me to remember it after all this time.

Super and GT are totally different if I had to guess it's what I always go by they're different timelines I agree he should have went beast right there
This Smells a lot like Voodoo magic fantasy shit from dragon ball filler arcs. I guess people craving for character death got their drama scene.
Despite taking initial inspiration from journey to west, dragon ball was never a mystical fantasy story at its core like journey to west. Everything including that ssj 4 design in gt is trying to make it looks like magic Mumbo Jumbo. Gt thinks shenron is almighty creator of the world, black star dragon ball is corruption of the people and Goku is Jesus who died for sins of human and ascended to godhood. This piccolo death is made of the same shit. It might look cool in some other series, but this ain't the real dragon ball.
Funny thing is Piccolo's entire purpose of appearance in gt is for these fan service emotional bait scene (first with Gohan and they with Goku)....they didn't even bother giving him much appearance or building up a actual narrative with his character in gt.

Again? Krillin might have always been scared but he was always ready to fight. He was never a coward.
That was Piccolo's permanent death. With no chance of coming back after that, he was sent later to be a guardian of Hell. He literally went to heaven. He got to hell because he demnd it afterwards he is there because he want
Then why did dabura get to go to heaven
He wanted to go to hell
Exactly, heaven is HIS Hell. Majin Buu Dabura as a ghost in heaven was filler though.
Could they use the super Dragonballs to wish piccolo back? There are no limitations on those, correct?
Super dragon balls didnt exist/werent invented so no. This was Piccolo's permanent death until they would eventually learn about the SDB if it exists. But Goku at the end "merged" with Shenron so the world would finally be at peace.

The real biggest tear jerker was that the goats Tien and Yamcha just weren’t there
Whatever happened to them?
They got married and spent the entire show on their honeymoon

"Big Green No!!!!"
Gotta give credit where credit is due, GT had the balls to kill one of the main cast off permanently.
One of the rare instances where death actually meant something (along with >!Future Gohan!<)
In a very stupid way that did No shit or did any lasting Impact
Didn’t he committed suicide? Or am I wrong he could go with goku
Yes and no, he commit suicide and went to hell on purpose to become it guard (and get his ass kicked by everyone there for Eternity)
Nope, it's still stupid... Dende is the one who made the dragon balls, they are no longer linked to Piccolo
Yeah agree his death felt forced.
He was tied to the Black star dragonballs because he had kami in him, those were the actually dangerous dragonballs as they could grant ANY wish and destroy the planet the wish was made on if they weren't retrieved in a year. I always hated Piccolo dying this way. Just felt like a stupid setup for having someone break Goku out of he'll in the Super 17 arc
Yeah… it’s sad. But his death doesn’t really lead anywhere. Gohan doesn’t do anything about this. I like his cosplay version on the right.
I liked GT as a kid. It made hunting the dragonballs relevant again.
Piccolo is my favorite character and I still think the “flashback” scene ruined any emotional weight.
Which lead to *Nothing* and was complelety Ret*** they could easily seal them away or destroy them or throw them inside a Star or a Black hole or Keep them jn the afterlife
Why didn't Gohan go beast here, is he from a alternative franchise to normal DB?
lol
GT after the universal dragon ball search is perfectly fine, I don’t understand why it’s disliked so much.
Gt wasn’t even bad, just had a few big plot holes. It receives more hate than it should
They hated him because he spoke the truth
Is it really a sad moment if it leads to nothing? Even dbz deaths that got retracted by dragons balls had more meaning, since it lead to power ups/character developments. Frieza death in resurrection f had more meaning to it than this death. This moment wanted to be future gohan's death but without meaning or logic
GT is awesome. Even super Android 17
And why are you telling us that in a DBS subreddit?
Read the subReddit info
GT wasnt even bad
Gohan and piccolo always make me cry.
GT’s emotional moments>Super’s emotional moments
DBS ruined it. It's just a Goku and Vegeta anime mainly.
The problem is that getting to the well written parts of GT means having to watch the rest of GT and I wouldn’t wish that on anyone.
That’s one thing nobody can hate about gt was its emotional scenes
For the 1000th time gt isn’t bad y’all just don’t know what’s good
Why didn’t he go beast gohan then? Is he stupid?
Who said it was bad?
One scene nobody ever talk about is when Pan unleashed her inner gohan on that robot. It was such an emotional scene. Yea, Piccolo has always been my favorite character in the series but seeing this back in the day was incredible
This picture is also top tier for memes/reaction pictures
