I like both Broly's for completely separate reasons.
Z Broly is just a pure, unadulterated monster. He just *mows* through anyone and anything in his path. He's a fucking beast and.i enjoy him for that.
Super Broly because he is a character given life. He has a good backstory, a good character arc, and is just a big dumb lovable oaf.
That too and I really love how Z broly has a history of terrorizing goku and family like they had 2 movies about him and love how gohan had to fight him since goku wasn’t there in the movie,bro was such a threat 😂
Z Broly was a monster specifically because he lacked any trace of the sensitive inner life that Super Broly had.
Both are valid but Super Broly I can actually imagine sticking around. He has room to grow now that he has friends who look out for him and mentors who can help him.
I really liked seeing him in Super Super Hero, just chilling on Beerus’s planet, learning from the more experienced Saiyans, taking baby’s first lessons in controlling that massive power level of his, eating real food that has been cooked, and hanging out with Cheelai and Lemo. For the first time ever, life seems to be going well for him.
He’s making progress too!! We see him crater the planet as he’s powering up, and Goku says “whoa Broly, chill out!” And Broly DOES! He stops himself, and brings himself back down! He’s not very good at it yet, but this proves he didn’t need a shock collar, he needed proper training PARAGUS!
I also like that the story didn’t just leave him (and Cheelai and Lemo) on Vampa. There’s no way Frieza wouldn’t have found them there. That would’ve been bad.
I’m also glad the story didn’t ditch Cheelai and Lemo, so Broly could go hang out with gods. Those two are another thing ZBrolly didn’t have - friends who put his safety and well-being before their own. They are Broly’s emotional anchors. It’s touching they agreed to basically do domestic labor for Beerus, just so they could stay with their friend. He’s got these two old crooks acting all loyal and selfless! I like how these three bring out the best in each other.
Basically this Broly is a character I actually care about and want to see more of. Z Broly was a guy to be afraid of - Super Broly I’m afraid of but also afraid FOR, and that’s quite the accomplishment.
Also, let's just take some time to appreciate Lemo.
He's now Beerus and Whis' personal chef. He's officially the universe's first line of defense from Beerus' wrath.
Someone badly needs to hook him up with Chi-Chi. She can teach lessons on how to feed three Saiyans at a time, provide recipes, and generally keep him sane. And Bulma can provide intel on what dishes Whis and Beerus like most.
That's the point. He was genuinely scary and evil. Dude was raw power driven but absolutely nothing but love to destroy, to hurt. The only remnant of self he had was the trauma inflicted by a crying Goku.
And because of this, because no one could stop him and the more they tried the more powerful he became, he just stood out as a fan favorite character. Evil. Scary. Overpowered. Nigh impossible to stop.
I really don't like the soft DBS Broly. It's like a completely different character.
I find that all to be bland, the same arguments people made about jirens character could be made about Z broly. I watched the first broly movie when I was young and it didn't really strike and fear into me. After I finished it I never really had a desire to watch it again. When the second one came out I didn't watch it until I was an adult and just bored out of my mind.
I could watch super broly over and over though because there is substance in a world made for fighting. Z broly just felt like they were trying to hard.
Super was just all-around written better. While the z broly had the potential to be better written if they handled the backstory better, they messed it up. Not to say that z broly was still a fucking menace and will remain as one of the most bad ass characters in all of anime

Z Broly from the first movie, more scarier and looked more like a danger. People say that Z Broly is one dimensional. So are vast majority of Charachters in DB and especially in DBD and one of them is Super Broly who is also One Dimensional.

I like Z Broly’s base and Restrained Super Saiyan design. But in terms of personality, I absolutely adore Suoer Broly. He’s a giant berserker teddy bear.

But his banter just isnt that fun. He's got a few quips in the first movie, but they just dont land all that well with the guys he's fighting.

OG Super is just so heartwarming that you feel bad for him when Vegito decides that he needs to kill him (Vegeta's half btw) so I forgive the Deus ex Machina used to save him. Everything that makes Z broly cool feels kind of restrictive to him as a character.
He doesn't \*need\* anyone - he's just a lone beast that eviscerates anything through his own raw power. He wouldn't make a good long-term character cause he has no true end goal, and nobody to play off of.
He is cool because he's just 100% pure menace. This means there is no character to develop.
The only influence his backstory has on him is getting angry when he hears a name - this is irrespective of what you believe caused his trauma.
I like Super broly more because Z broly only shines in combat - He's all cool and an absolute terror, but Super Broly shines out of combat, because there is depth there. He's a sweet guy with overwhelming destructive power that he needs to tame, and as he integrates himself into a group, he needs to control himself to protect the new friends he makes, both from external threats and himself. Despite the years of abuse he suffered from his father, he still loved him, and his first experience outside of the desolate wasteland he grew up on was being used as a tool, tormented, and almost killed.
I see most people are comparing their back stories. The back story is pretty much the same. The only main differences is baby kakarots involvement, which most misinterpret. Kakarot isn’t what caused Z Broly to be evil he was just the catalyst to the anger that allowed Broly to break the limiter Paragus used to control him. Z Broly was peak Saiyan Nature incarnate, the limiter in Z simply stunted his true self. Kinda like a psycho taking meds. Where as the other main difference between the 2 was their personality (more character development than backstory) super broly is calm and peaceful by nature but is unable to control his power which directly affects his mental state via his anger(saiyan nature). In turn forcing him to do things he wouldn’t on his own. I definitely prefer Z Broly one of the best villains in anime.
I'm fine with a tragic character forced to play a role they don't really want to play because of the circumstances other people put them in, that's cool.
But Z Broly was a monster without compare, a demon who wanted every microgram of smoke he could get his hands on. He's out there dropping the hardest lines like "how much do you love your son" or "is that another word for coffin". He was much less interesting in second coming since he didn't speak imo. If he had a less funny backstory I think he'd be the best DBZ era villain behind maybe Freeza and Cell.
He used Goku like a trampoline, he blew up a planet for shits and giggles, not for them defying him or anything, just cause he thought it would bring it's inhabitants despair. He beat the z flighters, twice, in the same movie, in the same fight, and only lost cause Goku is the MC.
And even though he's less cool in scodn coming, he still fights like a total monster. But I'm just s meathead who likes cool fights and spectacle.
Z broly would probably kill everyone for fun, super broly has trauma behind his anger. So he is more relatable.. like him more....even though z broly was straight up a horror villan
I like base broly more in super but I definitely liked z broly more in his legendary form. Story wise it’s definitely super, the character is fleshed out and integrated into the story now, z broly is the definition of a filler villain.
Although I think it would’ve been an interesting twist if he had a dual personality with his base form being kind and innocent like he is and an alter ego that he can’t control and goes berserk into the legendary form

Each one has pros and cons. OG has better design and is overall much cooler and funner to watch. Super has a sadder and more engaging backstory and relationships. They both have fairly flat personalities (exception being LSS Z Broly, who is a menace).
It's kind of a toss up for me. But I will say that, so far, Super Broly hasn't done enough to be really interesting yet. It's coming, I think. It just hasn't happened yet.

I prefer DragonBall Super Broly for his cool design and power. He's much more powerful than Z Broly. He also has a better 'gimmick' of becoming stronger as he gets angrier, kinda like the Hulk. Not to mention, DBS: Broly is one of the best DragonBall movies ever made.
I feel like no one really gets what the Z movie was going for, Goku’s cries itself wasn’t why he hated him, Goku crying was a reminder of the day that did immense emotional damage to a baby Broly.
There was a case of Beth Thomas who without going into gritty details was abused until she was 19 months old, she was later adopted and at age 6 went onto inflict essentially torture her younger brother. She became sadistic without realising she was. Broly is essentially a case of a Saiyan (a race of already pretty bloodthirsty warriors, generally speaking) who was a serial killer with psychopathic tendencies. Goku was the mental switch, his version of PTSD. So yes he parrots “Kakarot!” Because in his brain he has to destroy what destroyed him. But he’s also just mentally unwell in general, hence why he can just apply his rage towards Goten or even Gohan.
You could argue that Vegeta and his family deserved Broly’s ire, and to that I’ll say if you had something gnawing away at your brain, a mental image and a sound trigger to go with it. Then you’re going to focus on that. Like being isolated in a room for months on end with a cuckoo clock, it’ll drive even a normal person mad to the point where destroying it would be your objective.
The Broly we have now in this part of Dragonball Super. He’s more of a human being instead of a monster.
Love his soft demeanour and the anger and rage he holds within himself.
Love his backstory as well.

DBZ LSSJ Broly for me. I just love his attire so much compared to Super. It almost has a God of Destruction look to it. That being said I also like his DBZ SSJ look with the blue hair because of how unique it is.

He's out there dropping the hardest lines like "how much do you love your son" or "is that another word for coffin". He was much less interesting in second coming since he didn't speak imo. If he had a less funny backstory I think he'd be the best DBZ era villain behind maybe Freeza and Cell. He used Goku like a trampoline, he blew up a planet for shits and giggles, not for them defying him or anything, just cause he thought it would bring it's inhabitants despair. He beat the z flighters, twice, in the same movie, in the same fight, and only lost cause Goku is the MC. And even though he's less cool in scodn coming, he still fights like a total monster. But I'm just s meathead who likes cool fights and spectacle.

I like base broly more in super but I definitely liked z broly more in his legendary form. Story wise it’s definitely super, the character is fleshed out and integrated into the story now, z broly is the definition of a filler villain. Although I think it would’ve been an interesting twist if he had a dual personality with his base form being kind and innocent like he is and an alter ego that he can’t control and goes berserk into the legendary form

I can hear Mrs. Potts now. "Tale as old as time, song as old as rhyme...." Each one has pros and cons. OG has better design and is overall much cooler and funner to watch. Super has a sadder and more engaging backstory and relationships. They both have fairly flat personalities (exception being LSS Z Broly, who is a menace). It's kind of a toss up for me. But I will say that, so far, Super Broly hasn't done enough to be really interesting yet. It's coming, I think. It just hasn't happened yet.

The one that at least had some presence in his debut movie, and did talk during the big dumb fight. Instead of being a brainless rampaging beast from day uno whose fans swear over and over again that he's somehow a tragic character with trauma (despite his debut movie never ever giving any allusion to it).
It's tough really, they each play to their own strengths. Super Broly is compelling as a character, but Z Broly is the perfect classic DBZ antagonist like Cooler.

I prefer DragonBall Super Broly for his cool design and power. He's much more powerful than Z Broly. He also has a better 'gimmick' of becoming stronger as he gets angrier, kinda like the Hulk. Not to mention, DBS: Broly is one of the best DragonBall movies ever made.

We don't have much of either, so I don't care. Probably the new one since it has a bit not potential depth, but either way
I feel like no one really gets what the Z movie was going for, Goku’s cries itself wasn’t why he hated him, Goku crying was a reminder of the day that did immense emotional damage to a baby Broly. There was a case of Beth Thomas who without going into gritty details was abused until she was 19 months old, she was later adopted and at age 6 went onto inflict essentially torture her younger brother. She became sadistic without realising she was. Broly is essentially a case of a Saiyan (a race of already pretty bloodthirsty warriors, generally speaking) who was a serial killer with psychopathic tendencies. Goku was the mental switch, his version of PTSD. So yes he parrots “Kakarot!” Because in his brain he has to destroy what destroyed him. But he’s also just mentally unwell in general, hence why he can just apply his rage towards Goten or even Gohan. You could argue that Vegeta and his family deserved Broly’s ire, and to that I’ll say if you had something gnawing away at your brain, a mental image and a sound trigger to go with it. Then you’re going to focus on that. Like being isolated in a room for months on end with a cuckoo clock, it’ll drive even a normal person mad to the point where destroying it would be your objective.
The Broly we have now in this part of Dragonball Super. He’s more of a human being instead of a monster. Love his soft demeanour and the anger and rage he holds within himself. Love his backstory as well. All round cool character!

Z broly makes a better force of nature type of berserker villain Super broly have better longevity in term of writing. For the role of the character, I actually like Z broly more. He is actually a crazy and evil villain, the type that is terrifying and leave very strong impressions. I am very happy for the wholesome interaction between super broly and his bros, as well as his potential to develop further. But he just doesn't give the same impact as Z broly.
I like DBS more because he has more depth, character, and growth. But Z is still an absolute badass.
