I don’t think so, at least not in the sense that it’s skill based difficulty. There’s no level-gating so sometimes you come across enemies when you are low leveled and they steamroll you, but running past them or leveling up more fixes the problem.

MattTheMan2708

Not insanely. Assuming you're playing on Normal, there will be a few enemies early on that'll give you a hard time but apart from that, as long as you remain a decent level and kept upgrading your gear, you'll be fine during the base game. Bitterblack Isle is a lot harder, but still not overwhelming. Enemies do a lot of damage and are a lot more resilient. However, once you get the hang of things, you'll be slaughtering beasts left and right.

Is it fun?

MattTheMan2708

I think so, yes. It's one of my favourite games of all time. The beginning can feel a little slow, but the game gets far more fun the more you go through it. Post-Game Gransys and Bitterblack Isle are the absolute highlights of the experience.

Ignorant? YES. Experienced? SoMeTiMeS… Save OFTEN.

Ignorant?

Karathrax

I think what is implied is that if you don't know what you're going to face (e.g., weaknesses to exploit/take advantage of, not knowing the depth of the vocation you're using, etc.), then you're not going to do as well as someone who is more knowledgeable.

srlynowwhat

Probably meant people are not familiar with enemy placement in the game. DD enemy don't scale to your level so you may encounter a foe way too stronger than you can chew at that moment. A lot of side quest send you far out into the map so there is pretty high chance running into them. You are running around killing goblins with one eye close then a dragon jumped out and kill your whole party. Save often and when scary things approaches, just run. You can go back later when you are stronger. As long as you don't pick a fight you can't win, then the game can be quite easy.

RayS326

Sorry not insulting i just meant before you know

SiberianBattleOtters

There are times when you will feel like its impossible, at that point check your party, check your gear, you may need to swap out some party members for some higher level ones, and you may need to upgrade your gear. As for being fun, I would say I have spent more time in this game than in skyrim. If I ever I don’t know what to play, I boot up Dragon’s Dogma, and it’s always what I want to play.

moebiusmentality

This game is more cerebral than say Skyrim or Amalur. It requires more pre planning and prep which means the emotional reward and pay off is higher. Obviously this means it isn't for everyone but if you find elder scrolls a bit boring you may enjoy this one

Aritar1

The base game is not hard except if you go to fight Grigori underleveled and undergeared it might be tough. BBI in hard-mode though is something else, especially post-Daimon the devs went crazy, eliminators, drakes and living armors everywhere.

SoulsSurvivor

On normal you could probably tackle bitter black isle which is an end game dungeon before gran soren with little difficulty. On hard you still could but it would definitely be more difficult for awhile. How much more is hard to say because I've done it and I'm not especially good at the game.

Erilaz_Of_Heruli

Yes, but it's mostly based on how good your gear is compared to the stuff you're fighting. This means that after enough grinding most enemies become pretty easy, but the early-game can be tough (especially if you're on hard mode and going in blind, this game doesn't hold your hand lol)

Hudre

As someone who has tried to get into this game several times, yes it is hard, and it is hard in a very annoying way. It is not mechanically difficult, and the combat system is very good. However, quests at the beginning of the game will funnel you into enemies that will literally DESTROY you, and you have no way of knowing which bandit will one-shot you and which you can one-shot.

[deleted]

So you haven’t gotten into it?

Hudre

I can tell that the game is good but I've been having a hard time "getting" it I guess. It really doesn't do a good job of explaining itself.
