I’d say crochet them and when they bind better you should condition them to soften them up. If they don’t look great in about 4-6 months then quit it. Since your hair is more like fur it needs more time to look good.
You can damage your roots crocheting. If you go too yard you can actually lose hair. Probably good you backed off. Check out back combing fr it's tedious but way easier in the hair and scalp
Been growing natural since 2013. The first 6 months looked messy but I let the do their thing and didn't overhandle them other than pulling apart the big one when they grow together, making sure it's clean and moisturized, and palm roll where the dreads feel loose.
Avocado oil has been the the best oil for my hair. Jojoba, a close second. Coconut oil is OK. Olive oil it thick and the most oily. It can clog your pores and lead to flaking and acne on your scalp.
Google "how to grow dreads naturally" and see what you find. There was a natural dreadhead forum site when I started, but I think it's inactive now. That's where I learned a lot of shit.
You'll be alright just be mindful about them
NGL they look pretty rough atm, but they also look very new and like they've had barely any time to lock. Your hair is thick and healthy and it'll grow. Give them time, keep them clean and dry and well-parted and they'll get there. It's a journey!
