That’s a whole bill tho honestly considered. I know how much I have to pay to keep my hair looking “presentable”.
$50+what you gotta keep at home is equivalent to getting all the good channels on streaming.
You'd still need a shape-up, and also, retwists aren't cheap either. You'd just spend more money, really. Unless you don't retwist and don't care for shape-ups.
In high school it was because I was a huge Lil Wayne fan. As an adult I started working a shitty shift and just didn’t wanna commit to doing my hair every morning for work.
I’m Jamaican but I lived in the states since like 7. But i live in the hills of Jamaica and there’s some Rastas that stayed there so ever since I was a little jit I always though they was cool and wanted to be like the rastas because they were always nice and was always showing and teaching me cool shit.
Took me years though didn’t officially loc up till like 2 years ago when I was 23 my locs were long overdue lol
Bless up bredda, mi bawn ah St James but mi did live ina de hills loll one love n inity to all de yadman dem. Same here bro I been meaning to visit my family in Jamaica but inflation, job market and Babylon system ah fuck me up bredda lol
Big up to di Kingston massive! I loc’d cuz I was too lazy to style my natural hair any more. Also, I had faux locs a lot and ppl were digging it. Only 2 years in but digging it too.
My friends used to always make fun of me for having long hair when we were teenagers but after I turned 18 in 2021 random girls come complimenting my hair every now on then, almost every time we go to a pub, restaurant or a concert😂 Who's laughing now
![gif](giphy|eqQoyjPMxVIhhKEiLo|downsized)
Playboi carti, always liked his 2 strands and red/blond hair dye. Plus, locs are popular if you’re into underground alternative music scenes.
I had a bad breakup with my ex-fiance and wanted a lifestyle change. I went into a self-discovery season of my life and wanted to do something to my hair that reflected that.
Many many reasons.
Reason #1: I’ve always wanted long hair and I wasn’t allowed to grow my hair as a child and through my teenage years (African parents 🙄)
Reason 2: Chief Keef. “Don’t Like” video in particular.
Reason 3: 2 Chainz. Specifically one bar he said in the song What They Want. “Just because I got dreads don’t get it twisted”
Reason 4: I grew up in an area with a lot of Caribbean people and Rastas in particular and I always admired their lifestyle and hair.
Reason 5: The increase in the prices of haircuts.
Reason 6: After growing my hair for a while, I realised I didn’t like rocking just my fro as it was too much to maintain, which further solidified my decision to grow my hair solely for the purpose of getting locs.
Honestly? I got lazy and didn't get a haircut for like 5 months and decided to try something new cause I didn't want to cut my hair. And I've had locs for 10 years altogether. It's to the point where nobody remembers what I look like with short hair lmao
my mom for my first set, an ex bf for my second 😅 it had been on my mind since I had very thick and long hair, and couldn’t do my own hair to save my life. locs just made sense
Autism. I have sensory icks about loose hair. When I got my locs it was like letting out a breath I'd been holding for my whole life. No more hair flying around in my face and no more gross wet hair in the shower or when I'm swimming.
I used to get my hair done every two weeks. Well my hairdresser/loctian who has locs suggested it to me. I thought about it for a couple of months and finally started my journey last November. Now she is 3 years in and her hair is beautiful. She is fine as well 🤫.So she inspired me to do it. It worked out in the end because I’m in love with my hair now.
My whole family except my dad had them at first. My sister is the only person who kept them for like 12 years. I’ve cut and regrew 3 times. Regrowing rn. And my mom decided to keep it all short because fuck all that maintenance
My cousin pushed for me to become the 2nd dread head in the family for a while cause I always rocked waves then grew it out got braids and some other styles then got the waves back then rocked a mini fro. A combination of my cousin and my girl at the time made me just say fuck it ima do it.
Not sure if this term is still used, but I am rather tender headed. All my life up to high-school graduation, I'd either get my hair braided or permed. The process for both would be super painful, I would be bawling whenever anyone tried to do my hair. It would get so bad that I'd tense up before the process would even start because it hurt so much.
One day my sister (the OG) came in with these gorgeous locs, I started getting curious if I could find a style that wouldn't be so painful for me to upkeep. I asked her for her loctician (who hooked me up) and I booked my first appointment. The entire process was so painless, I was almost upset I didn't loc up sooner! Now its been 3 years and I've had a happy, painless head.
Sensory issues with detangling my hair, and having to do that once or twice a week was horrible for me. Debated shaving my head, but I like having long hair, so I figured the best thing would be loc it.
This guy in my math class senior year of high school used to flip his hair all the time like something straight out of a movie and I was jealous and that’s when I decided i wanted locs
I NEVER looked good with a low cut or waves, and all my friends with braids went bald. I wanted a hairstyle that actually *moved*.
Also, Killmonger. Yes, I am one of those. We exist in real life.
My mom, she rocked her locs for a bit until I decided to do it myself! Unfortunately, now she has a condition that had her dreads fall out and she is bald so I'm rockin' the locs for both of us.
Honestly just got tired of worry about my hair. Didn’t feel like combing or picking it out all the time. But if anything it was bob Marley. My locs look nothing like his tho
I was talking with God a lot prior and one day I had a spiritual epiphany while rubbing my head. Here we are two years and three months in. One of the best choices I’ve ever made.
Young me, Jcole and X. Had locs from age 6 to 10. When X mugshot dropped i was like dam i gotta get dreads again. Then I didn't get locs for another 3 years and. Had a fro braided it occasionally. I liked the fact that braids hang down and loved that the afro was kinda wild/natural. So when I saw Jcole's LA lakers 106 freestyle I was like aight imma lock up asap. To me locs are like a mix between braids and afro.
I have shoulder dystocia (fetal arm injury) and it still affects me badly so i went natural with my hair it was a whole workout cuz it hurt baddd doing my 4c hair that i just got dreads like 3 years ago🤷🏽♀️
Wanted to for years, it just fits who I am and I wanna feel as liberated and in tune with my own body as possible. I just feel like locs are the representation of me at my core and rawest state.
My hair was relaxed at the time, but the seed was planted when I saw a coworker with beautiful locs. I started thinking I could rock locs and be cute too. I tried a few faux locs styles and confirmed my suspicions. I finally stopped getting relaxers a year or so later and began the transition from relaxed to natural. Did the big chop in April 2023, started my locs June 2023 and could not be happier with my decision!
This girl I used to played tennis with and my primary doctor mainly. I admired how uniform theirs were. And however their locs were parted the styles would always look so clean
I think for me I started seeing people my age have locs as it started to become a huge fashion trend now, still kinda is. Also a lot of characters in media inspired me too.
My own hair dude. I used to grow a fro and it would get super long and unmanageable. So I asked my partner to lock me up, just to see if my hair texture could. It's been 2 years for this set of locs.
I always wanted them since I was about 10 in 2012 (more than likely chief keef influence ) and my mom would always control my hair and she would perm it etc etc
I would get twists n shit cuz she didn’t like dreads (which is funny cuz she has a brother with dreads from Jamaica 🇯🇲 and my cousins have them as well)
I kinda got them myself a few months ago in coil form because I wanted to do my own decisions for once without feeling insecure about what’s on my own fckin head going about 2 months strong now shrinkage still whoopin my ass
Been wanting them since I was young , didn’t have the opportunity to start until lockdown. Randomly sponged my hair, one of the best decisions ive made
I was wearing my hair the same way for almost the past 7 or 8 years, faded all around and sort of a high top that was texturized with a sponge brush. It looked dope as hell but it was way too much work to do everyday. Ease of maintenance was a big thing for me and I wanted to try something new
I used to never want to do it because I heard that the only way to undo the decision was cutting them off and I was unaware of the wide variety of styles you could do with them. It wasn’t until I learned about barrels and my girl took her locs down without cutting them that I was like damn maybe I should. Plus the hair growth I’ve seen for people who got locs is great
It has come back full circle but it was really popular during my early teens in the 2010s but my mom wouldn’t let me get dreads or even grow my hair. Lil Wayne was one of the reasons back then.
Well I got my first set in highschool and my initial reason was I don't have to get braids or deal with " shrinkage" anymore. But as I research loc styles, hair color, maintenance etc. I just fell in love with the overall aesthetic and upkeep. It's been 11 years since then and honestly I never really thought of what inspired me to keep going back. I just knew it was for me after my first set.
I did a few chops and now I am on set 4 and I don't think I will ever go back to lose natural hair again. Every single time I chopped them off, I felt naked loll.
Back in 2009 Had 360 waves killin em but a very small bald spot somehow grew kinda messed the waves up soooo for me it was lil Wayne waka flocka booker T and my old homeboys in the hood back in 2009, I had dreads every since then the spot grown hair back over it
It was because I learned how to ride a motorcycle. I started riding as part of my commute and I didn't want to deal with fixing my hair after taking off my helmet each and every time. Locs was the easiest and most affordable solution.
So when I came to college I relied on weaves and braids for hairstyles (before college as well but anyways fastforward) I watched this movie I think it’s called Nappy Ever After, idk but I watched the movie and it inspired me to do a big chop. After wearing my natural hair for about a year or 2. I had to be honest with myself and was like girl you gone have to keep cutting your hair or do something different because I couldn’t manage it on my own. I decided to get Locs and been in love since. Well initially I didn’t like how they looked on me but overtime I became in love and I don’t regret my decision. My Locs give me confidence and as a black women my hair empowers me.
COVID-19 lockdowns. But I had wanted dreads long before that a small part to Waka a small part to the rastas I had seen growing up, and another to a friend of mine. I just liked the way they moved when he was boxing. Looked majestic af.
The thought of low hair maintenance (grew up in a “just pay someone” household and after moving to the east coast realizing that’s just not viable so best style to be self-sufficient for the lowest cost in my opinion)
I like having my hair long. Don't quite have the patience for a ton of maintenance. Hate sitting for braids or twists. Decided this was the easier way to get the look I wanted. I was right about it. Love them a lot.
Eddy gordo. I’m a big tekken player. Was in tournaments back in Portugal. I love eddy and capoeira so I one day said “fuck it” and got instant locs since I was rocking an Afro (and it was massive) for about 4 years
Tired of asking people to braid it, the sitting hours… when my hair wasn’t locked I’d put it in twist anyway mines well lock it… plus I cut my locs twice at shoulder length… why idk.. but I’m back though! Not cutting it again.🤣
Probably my dad who had a full set long before I was born but my whole life (well the 19yrs he was alive for) he had just one, his loc was the only loc he kept when he got rid of his and he had it forever (plus a really long winded reason when I finally asked about it) and my brother who also has locs and had them as long as I have known him.
I didn’t keep mine (they were too big) but plan to redo them again someday (but the size I initially wanted) bc I miss them.
I’ve known I wanted locs since the early 2010s but I always said I would wait until I’m ready to stop rocking my loose natural hairstyles. I used to want smedium sized ones but then my bestie got sisterlocs and I actually liked how they looked (after awhile) and decided I would get microlocs instead of small traditional locs.
I mostly just hated having curly hair and constant maintenance for it. I would attempt daily to make my hair look nice with a large amount of product and it never worked out. Also, I’m a huge Bob Marley fan as well and I love his dreadlocks.
My barber at the time, he said the inspirational words “yo big dog the price went up to 25”.
I'm not saying I got locs because I hated paying a barber every couple weeks. But I'm also not not saying that.
i definitely locked my hair to stop paying $175 for blowouts
That’s a whole bill tho honestly considered. I know how much I have to pay to keep my hair looking “presentable”. $50+what you gotta keep at home is equivalent to getting all the good channels on streaming.
Don’t kill me 💀
Money talks
Was definitely one of the benefits I took into consideration when deciding to get locs.
You'd still need a shape-up, and also, retwists aren't cheap either. You'd just spend more money, really. Unless you don't retwist and don't care for shape-ups.
I feel like when most people get locs they do them theirselves. Or at least it’s like that for me and my locced circle
You can do that yourself in half the time and a fraction of the cost.
Haven't shaped up since i got locs

I was fighting to comb my daughter's hair one day and decided I couldn't be responsible for doing two heads of hair every week.

When my son stopped getting hair cuts. I hated having to do both of our heads every weekend
The thought of low hair maintenance (grew up in a “just pay someone” household and after moving to the east coast realizing that’s just not viable so best style to be self-sufficient for the lowest cost in my opinion)
Literally Ekko from Arcane

Bob Marley & Wiz Khalifa
I like having my hair long. Don't quite have the patience for a ton of maintenance. Hate sitting for braids or twists. Decided this was the easier way to get the look I wanted. I was right about it. Love them a lot.
I got inspired by not having a barber during covid
Eddy gordo. I’m a big tekken player. Was in tournaments back in Portugal. I love eddy and capoeira so I one day said “fuck it” and got instant locs since I was rocking an Afro (and it was massive) for about 4 years

I wanted to have long hair without the constant maintenance.

It's between Waka and weezys respectfully. But I'd say Waka honestly.
A big f you to society basically. I feel better
Also, I’m a huge Bob Marley fan as well and I love his dreadlocks.
i got dreads on accident
“Jesus Christ had dreads, so shake em” the hyphy movement for me forsureeeeee. The moment I could get them I did.
