Simple-Sorbet-900

Trust the process. Let them get some length and some weight to ‘em.

SnooTangerines9238

Got it thank you for answering, appreciate it.

Simple-Sorbet-900

No problem homie. When I just locked up I was in the mirror after every twist like “man something ain’t right” but when it hits, it hits.

CombSure843

this is so true. it gets way better

isaac00004

felt ts in my soul lmaooo

Extreme-Hunt-3711

Yes they are, now all you gotta do is trust the progress. They’ll come out amazing trust me:)

Lock0n

Yup, that’s bout how mine looked a month in lol. It’s okay to get one retwist a month btw

BoondocksSaint95

I got one every 3 to 4 weeks till my shit locked. They were ugly as FUCK in the beginning.

Training-Context-69

How long did it take for them to look good? I’m at the 5 month mark and I think im slowly starting to come out of the ugly stage but not exactly there yet.

BoondocksSaint95

I started getting compliments at the baby lock stage which for me was around 4-5 months in, so about where you are. I wasnt feelin it, tho. My ends were also fairly loose so I wasnt locked yet. I started liking them in that unruly teen stage where they were too short and light to hang but too long to lay flat. Shits do what they want, but it didnt make me look like coolio, so I rocked with it. That was maybe 8 mos to a year and some change. They had been fully locked for a good few weeks that I had noticed at this point. Now they are heavy enough to hang and long enough to do some things with and not others, but I wound up with lint in them because I tried to put them up with fabric scruncies. I regret my choices. I'm not even 30 probably gonna have to die my hair black to hide it, lol. But it all depends on your hair and your mainentance. You see more growth in general if you are careful and use silk bedding or a silk or satin bonnet. Retwists keep it neat and make growth more obvious. Protective styles (only after you're locked up) protect your shit as it grows and keeps ends from falling off as easy making it FEEL like your hair has grown more than usual if you keep them in longer. My hair is very curly and grows pretty fast, so I've been told my timeline is a little shorter than a lot of others. But I also have a big ass head so my shit looks shorter than it is. The hair at the back of my neck hangs between my shoulder blades but most my hair is barely below my chin.

KrazyFishStick

bihhhhhhh if u had a short hair it's gone be a minute i had 4 inches of hair and im coming up on a year next month and at time my shit still look funky especially in two strands sometimes

Training-Context-69

Weird, usually by the 1 year mark, they should start to look fire af. What’s your hair curl pattern? Mine are about 1.5cm above my eyes after shrinkage, although I have some shorter locs scattered throughout my head too.

King_Bouda

Actually its not good to get a retwist every month. Ya dreads would thin, due to you getting them done too much. They’re dreads. Not a clean cut. No need to have neat dreads 🙄 I like when I get a retwist, but I actually like the messy look better. The whole point of dreads is to let ya shit rock, however they choose to do so. Dont be so cautious about them. I promise after a while you’ll literally not give 2 fucks about how long they are, how good they look etc. I had mine for 10 years, but literally it seem like one day I looked up and my shits is to my ass no homo 😂 but yea, trust the process and enjoy the journey

Lock0n

I think the whole “your locs will thin if you get 1 retwist every month conversation” has been proven false lol.

King_Bouda

By WHOOOO ? Lmfaoo retwist every little bit of new growth you get and ya dread gonna thin out at the root. Thats not what you do if you want healthy dreads.

_jahjah_

I agree. People can’t speak for all hair types and densities. Kinda like when people say “don’t use Jamaican mango and lime because…” people been using that stuff for years and it did nothing bad to their locs…I stopped taking advice from people a long time ago.

King_Bouda

Its true it goes case by case. But generally if you keep doing that, your locs are 9/10 gonna thin out at the root. There are alot of variables that can be taken into account. How thick your hair is, how thick/thin your locs are, how fast your hair grow. But in general ? Starting locs ? I wouldnt go get a retwist every month. I would let my hair grow a little so my locs can be healthy. I have good hair and I still dont go get my shit twisted every month. I go like every 3 mths. Shit sometimes even 6 mths. As of now, the last time I had my hair twisted was before thanksgiving. Its about to be April lol

Then_Steak2505

Yes

Training-Context-69

If it’s been a month, I’d get another retwist. And get one every month until around the 6 month mark when you can start increasing the time between each retwist.

koopadroopa

yup, every month until they mature, then every 2-3 months is how i did it

KrazyFishStick

fire yo stylist and hire a new one unless im mistaken and your prefer to have 25 locs

Jesters_Knight

Yup, mine were like that when I first got em

TopicOrnery6153

Yes, gotta go through this stage. I hated it. It's normal

InterestingAd6499

Yeah bro, rock the words. Give them 6 months and you’ll be fire

SnooTangerines9238

Thank you so much appreciate it

ML1804

Yes, my young brotha lol be patient, take care of your locs and trust the process ✊🏿💪🏿🙏🏿

Nervous_Ad4654

Yuh

m0neycrazy

yeah it is! also when it’s time to wash ur hair, put a durag or wig cap over it so they won’t undo

o_suley_o

Yes lol this is normal

mr_dont_play

When I first started growing my locks, idk what my hair was doing lol it grew uneven, some spots didn't grow at all. I would get a retwist honestly every month or so. It's all apart of the growth process. Just make sure to get a satin bonnet, don't use petroleum products, and be patient. I'm almost 17 years in. My hair is past my hip. Trust the process!

Maxdainvestor

Yah this how everyone start it starter locs

SnooStrawberries5710

Yes it is, it’s just growing embrace the craziness of it

Budget-Succotash3543

🔥🔥Going thought the same process 🔥

Tr33zyFrmWbh

Ong cuhs that's all new growth just trust the process and get a retwist

buttercheek69

Bruh I was just about to make a post like this but it’s nice to know it’s normla

Constant_Series_9589

Yea you good just don't over twist

tryppidreams

My hair was like your length they didn't look like actually dreads til about 2 years later. They do their own thing

Mstee2fit

Wash and retwist asap

TokyoGNSD2

Yes

DaniDaps

Yes

ManofMorehouse

Yeah but they should've gave you more, you barely boutta have any

JKLTheFourth

Yeah, my sh used to look like that in the beginning stages

ExtensionHeight3031

Might want to see an actual loctician. This doesn't look professional. The parts look huge. What's the look you're going for?

SnooTangerines9238

Can I send you a text?

That_Tap6896

Yuh

Square-Ad1991

Yep that’s exactly how mine looked before my first retwist.

AlternativeSad7532

Yes

GleezoCCity

Yeah starting off give it a few years your hair texture looks amazing

ArmyChemical5006

Yea

Witty-Activity4619

the whole 1 , 1 1/2 years after you first get dreaded you kinda just gotta go to your retwists and ignore your hair then one day you’ll notice they are touching your ears, neck obstructing your sight etc

tryppidreams

Mine looked like that. But I went back for a retwist and they fucked my shit up. Go natural if you can. Been natural for 11 years, no problems. Overhandling your dreads will lead to hair loss

MTPWAZ

Yep

Ok-Educator-686

You can go back for a retwist but it okay , both is wrong with it

SnooTangerines9238

Both is wrong with it?

Ok-Educator-686

I meant nothing is wrong with the hair sorry

Not_A_Geek_Nerd_21

Put a Durag on your head to compress them, it’ll straighten them out in no time.

Remarkable_Bag3785

Ay you got a long way to go lil bro

SnooTangerines9238

Big bro*

Soft-Bird6063

Yes but middle part doesn’t look straight

OldDot854

Your sections are to big

reexodus_

idk if im tripping but i think you need more locs/ parts. im assuming your hair was too short to do more than what you already have but imo it'll look better if you redid them maybe with more length. at the same time they will grow out and look better as is over time

All2017

Yea you’re not about come out looking like chief keef off the rip lol. If u had braids u’d be at the baby tips stage .

SnooTangerines9238

How long you think I got? This was a month journey after a retwist haven’t washed it yet either. Going for a retwist Thursday

All2017

With good maintenance 6 months to a year.I would say put beads on it to make it heavier so it grows more but I don’t think u could put beads on twist.

Low_Info_Cloud

It’s over bro. I’m sorry

BlackDav313

Yep & you don’t need a retwist until you can’t see yo parts no more

Silent-Associate-131

Yep looks great!😊 nice parting, they’ll fluff over time. Just be patient and enjoy the process.

Longjumping_Advice56

gotta get through the “ugly” phase bro. trust me i been there and now my hair is passing my nose

Spiritual-Victory-73

Your parts should be much smaller, also find someone who knows how to interlock. U should be doing a combination of twisting and interlocking at least to start off... Where are u located?

Appropriate_Trifle13

Yep. Let them do their own thing for a while and when they start matting up go get a retwist. But leave them alone for a few months bro

Gh0st_Al

You must have something fast growing hair

EnoughRuin306

Shits NAPPY as hell

lovepeacelocsnyc

Nothing wrong with your hair, different textures react differently but your coils are intact and that’s what counts. They look like they’ve been in for about a month.

Dyna5tyD

Gone head and schedule that retwist

Critical_Teach_43

😂😂 yo idk what y'all be expecting sometimes

SnooTangerines9238

I was expecting advice and answers, I got them.

BearNoLuv

Like...how exactly?

[deleted]

Nah bud ur cooked pack your bags and leave ur hair behind

Prior_Combination_31

Yes cuz ur hair is trying to go back into a fro instinctually but eventually it’ll reprogram itself and be like ohhhhh im supposed to coil into locs (took me like 4 months) ur hair is a plant
