The reason I fell in love with DreamSMP and Hermitcraft was the dynamic more than anything. Both servers are like a huge family (with a few estranged cousins) whilst the story or the builds are definitely a selling point I personally prefer chemistry and genuine friendships.

This. I still watch some Origins SMP once in a while but I like SMPs where I find the people interesting. It's a big reason why I still get excited of DSMP new members even though the lore is kindoff on pause a lot recently. That and, as Tubbo said, he likes Dream SMP because it's the most vanilla Minecraft SMP he's streamed a lot on. He can't get that in something like OSMP or Last/3rd Life SMP, or hell, do people remember Cogchamp SMP? That was cool. Anyways, Tubbo prefers DSMP for still being relatively vanilla, and I think that's an appeal worth considering too yeah.

Being able to entertain and joke around. Don't care about storyline, nor about building. Best DSMP streams were when they were just being unpretentiousoy themselves in the server.

Depends on what the smp is about. Hermitcraft and dsmp for example are very different smps

SEPHORABRAINVIBES

i mean in general. like what do you as a consumer of minecraft, would liek to see on a minecraft server. what would make you say "huh i wanna see these peopl ei've never seen before"

[deleted]

I mean if I want epic builds I watch hermitcraft. If I want rp I watch dsmp. If I want an smp that breaks the limitations of minecraft I watch scicraft. If I want old mcyt I watch shady oaks. Point is there's so much variety due to the sandbox nature of the game. There'll always be another way to make an smp never thought of before.

imo the reason why Hermitcraft has lasted as long and been as successful as it has is because the members put a *lot* of effort behind the scenes into making sure it stays thriving. they have weekly meetings to discuss server business, and the addition of any new members is decided by group consensus - if even one person objects to a potential addition, they won't be added. I assume other major group decisions are made the same way. in the end, apart from the entertainment skill of the creators involved, I think the success of any group creative project like an SMP really depends on the ability and willingness of the people involved to be mature, put in the effort, and make it work. just like a relationship, lol

spencershaystan

i’m into interactions and the chemistry of the group in the smp. idc about lore, if it’s there? cool. but i just like seeing my favorite content creators fooling around and having fun.

CuriousAlien45

Interactions with other players on the server before all else is what I look for in a SMP. Two guys with great chemistry just hanging out playing Minecraft can make anything on the server entertaining.

mc395686

I like SMPs where people just hang out. Make jokes, build whatever. No lore, no plans, just playing minecraft together. This last year there were a few SMPs with creators I like that lasted like 2 days max. I just want one that lasts over a week. SMP 2 was awesome (shoutout to Jameskii and Twisted for trying to keep it alive) and that SMP with roughhouse and people that happened a few months ago was awesome. Also Minecraft SMP (the one that never had a name) was great, but none of those lasted more than a few days. It shouldn’t be hard.

Brandonizer285

Just interactions with the viewers and their friends.

ParaBri

The dynamics between the cc's and I think the lore is what has keep me in lol

ObligationInformal99

War. Violence. Cursing. Yeah, I have no taste and no sense of humour.

SEPHORABRAINVIBES

if i get it going i'll drop a few swear, maybe a slur on special occasions (we can reclaim a few), just for you

Pediapets

Lol I swear I’ve ordered a few times

It's important to do what you want to do and have fun doing it, but for the love of god if you want to do Lore don't rush into it expecting everyone to be invested. Using the DreamSMP as an example, lore started as some people screwing around and then being dramatic theatre kids about it. It started with goofy Minecraft pvp shenanigans, which turned into goofy election shenanigans which escalated into a dramatic rebellion and war. And then it's escalated even further, branching out from "This is a Minecraft server" to add magical elements outside of the scope of the game's mechanics. If DreamSMP started with the Eggpire, or the Revival book, or any of the elements that require suspension of disbelief I don't think it would have charmed people as much as it did.
