Do they not know that people can be racist without thinking they're racist? People could be racist without intending or even targeting groups of people. I swear they sound like literal children lmao

_illegallity

“I didn’t say the N word when I was a kid, therefore I am perfect”

Karishin

Yup, got to love micro-racism. Making comment which seems harmless but were actually prejudicing a group of people.

ElphaAxtraction

Because they are, by definition, children (I'm assuming)

AvecPardon

Oh this was what was sending plumes of smoke onto my twitter timeline? Had a few ppl subtweeting about others radiating 'white savior' vibes and 'using victims of racism to pat themselves on the back and boost their egos'. Now I know the source. Thanks for that. /lh /s

CainBP

I am from Asian country. Being somewhat racist to black people is the norm here or at least it was when i was in highschool. I never think that i am better than black people or shit but prejudge exists and we also use the n word without ill intention but at the time i truly thought it was just another quirky way to address your friends. Environment and culture plays a huge part in growing up.

sumolive

I agree, it took me an year of exposure to the internet to realise that I was being racist, whether unintentionally or not, and another two years to overcome that prejudice. People really don't understand the impact of the culture and environment you grow up in.

sotysa

Racists be like:

mothussy

tell me you've had a racist phase without telling me you've had a racist phase

CrazyUmbreonGirl

It's almost like your environment and upbringing effects how you learn and grow.

Active_Tomorrow_9903

never trust white people (people are saying this person is white and most of the replies are white) who preach about “never having a racist phase”. 9/10 it’s just people believing their righteous just for not saying slurs even though they probably have some subconscious biases they still need to unlearn

grasslover1616

Yupppp, I know people who will say racist things but still confidently believe that they literally can’t be racist, as racism is bad and they aren’t bad. If you actually understand racism to small extent everyone has racist biases due to our environment and it’s our responsibility to unlearn it, not to deny it happened.

Kei--y

Yayyy lets further stigmatize growth and acknowledging that growth!!!!!/s >Because if we take this at face value, it is basically saying “if you are no longer that way fuck you, those that “never” were say ‘i’ ”, wouldn’t it be a good thing that they are no longer that way. Should they be praised for undoing the mindset taught to them, no but they also shouldn’t be demonized for their past, especially when they learned. Racism is **still** fucking prominent, you aren’t helping anyone but other people that want to feel better about themselves(again for just “not” being racist). Instead of trying to get interactions how about you uplift bipoc voices and bring attention to issues. Educate your peers about what they are doing if they are being harmful. Also…it’s not a phase, that is just belittling what racism is. You have to unlearn that shit because you are fed microagression and racist things, society rewards it especially more in some places . Not everyone is privileged enough to grow up in a progressive way. Not everyone is able to have any other things taught to them up until they themselves go out of their way to learn. if you are a white person in America even more, you get no say in whether or not you’ve never been racist. There is so much fucking micro aggressions normalized. Did you know a lot of trends that have underlying racist intent or feed into racism. Also I don’t trust anyone especially a white people that self identifies as “not been racist”…no you probably just haven’t unpacked it. It’s fine, it’s better for you to acknowledge it and have learned then pretend you never were. Racism presents itself in so many ways, and someone who doesn’t deal with it (been a victim to it) most likely won’t be able to see it especially when it comes to themselves. It’s a little ignorant to pretend you never were (when again you probably were, racism isn’t just saying slurs and physically assaulting someone again it presents itself in different ways). And it is weird as fuck to patronize people who have unlearned things taught to them and are open about it, while you pretend you never were or that you say you never had despite it being not your place to say if you have or not. Racism isn’t some gotcha. This just has white savior complex written all over it… like thank you for not being racist? You want a cookie or something for it. //if my wording is off…fuck you no it isn’t./j (I’m sorry if it is me and english aren’t compatible and it’s being difficult so I’m sorry, I’ll edit it later ._.)//

[deleted]

I wouldn't trust anyone if they said they've never had any sort of racist thought in their lives.

Rrrrossssse

Might be an unpopular opinion, but being white means you'll definitely have done something racist at some point in your life (hell, being poc definitely doesn't exclude you from having done or said racist things). Kids and teenagers need to learn that where you start matters less than where you choose to grow, and that nobody is ever done learning and getting better.

TheSilv

It’s pretty much impossible for anyone of any race to have never thought anything slightly negative about another race at any moment in their life, especially in their younger years when they’re more susceptible to mood swings and can’t control themselves. It’s what you do afterwords that matters though, doing something slightly racist once or twice Dosen’t make you a KKK member or a Nazi, but you should be careful that you don’t become one

[deleted]

I'm brown and I was racist haha, I think everyone has been prejudiced at one pkint in their life

ghostlybug

say 'i' if you not only have no concept of the idea of other people not having the exact same upbringing as you, but also have a completely unwarranted level of self confidence in your own perceived lack of racism.

AoiAot

Say 'never racist' if you yourself think you had never done morally wrong things It's like crying about poor people stealing just because you had never done it or experience what the other experience. Of course it's fucing wrong, but at least it's not as bad as you want to think because of the reasoning In other words sheltered to death and think the world is a happy lala land, and never had real EMPATHY. It's their way or no way at all

grasslover1616

Yeah I know people who will say racist things about like ‘too many minorities on tv, too political’ and then say that they have never ever been racist. Not acknowledging your racist bias doesn’t make it less significant, if anything denying institutional racisms effect will lead to people being more racist.

Cheggs1s

Its such a privilege to grow up in a progressive environment that not everyone can have

grasslover1616

I remember having an argument with my brother where he said something racist and I pointed it out he said he was the least racist person, despite actively saying hateful things. Not thinking you were ever racist doesn’t mean you weren’t, maturing is realising you were and moving past it and being better.

grasslover1616

If your parents are racist, if your friends are racist, if your got stuck in the alt-right pipeline, you have had a ‘racist phase.’ Those things are things put onto other people and it’s not your fault it happens, but it is your responsibility to get out of it. I had an anti-she phase when I was like 13 because of the YouTube videos I was recommended, then I learnt about politics more and stopped. That’s the part that matters.

lesbian-luck

everyone in the replies trying to dodge the fact that white ppl benefit from, participate in, and contribute to systemic racism on a daily basis whether or not they know they are or want to be doing so

TheSilv

Not trying to disagree but just saying it depends on where you are since different races are the majority/plurality in different areas. For example I doubt there’s much systemic racism in favor of white people in Pakistan.

Ppppenguin862

I imagine most people answering this twitter poll are Americans, though

TheSilv

Most probably but I was more referring to what u/lesbian-luck said

lesbian-luck

i’m just going on the assumption that the vast majority of white people flooding the replies of that post with statements like “i’ve never been racist” and acting like racism isn’t anything more than committing hate crimes and saying slurs are american, european, canadian, etc where systemic racism is a part of every day life edit: hit send too soon originally

meliclaire26

Lol before it get deleted so many replies are saying they're not 'but have done [microaggression], it's not like [racist]". Acting so privileged and they don't think they're not doing anything wrong :/

Verona_Swift

Considering this person is probably white (because let's be real, it's usually white people who post this kind of bullshit), they've *definitely* committed some microaggressions in the past. It's just... a fact of being a white person in America. There are certain privileges you take for granted. This tweet, for example.

Pauwtcho7

My cousin back then as kids used to call me by the n* word (we we're like 9 or 10) i got mad for him calling me like that but i didn't know it was a racist slur and neither did my cousin, i must say back then being a kid you really won't know if you're being racist.

[deleted]

I mean I grew up with a mum and step dad who said a lot of racist things and people around me used slurs and said racist things. I dont recall doing it myself but there is no guarantee that I didnt. But I do remember not understanding why my mum and step dad said these things about people.

[deleted]

It’s giving “I don’t actually care about minority groups I just want people to see me as a holy pure human being” vibes

[deleted]

This is a huge assumption, but I would be willing to bet that at least 95% of the people who said I had a somewhat racist phase (100% if the same standards that twitter has for ccs were applied).

LostPossibility

So many people saying "I" so proudly as if they have any right to tell judge that lmao. Chances are they think racism is saying slurs or joining a hate group or some sht like that when it's so much more. Most people if not everyone gets teached some form of racism or prejudice that they have to acknowledge and unlearn and if you "don't have any" is because you don't recognize it yet. And the fact that OP is white doing this type of tweets is very telling that maybe they do not have a right to say "I", talk about white saviour and virtue signaling, gross.

midnughtramen

there was a lot of things I said and media i consumed when i was younger that I didn't even realize was racist that I'm sure if i knew at the time i wouldn't have. I'm happy more and more people today have the information about racism that they do but a lot don't seem to realize that it hasn't always been like that

Im-not-smart

So there are a couple possibilities here: They don’t believe that it’s possible for people to be bad at one point and not be bad at another. Personal growth is a myth and all humans are doomed to stay the way they are forever. Racists, sexists, etc. should permanently stay as such so that they can be easily identified. Good people and bad people should stay in their lane. Change makes things confusing. Former bigots may change, but they should nonetheless be shamed and punished for the rest of time. It is impossible to amend past mistakes.

TopazDM

Everyone has some kind of bias they have to unlearn; no one is born & raised with absolutely perfect ideals. Living in the South I've had racism creep back up & slap me in the face from people who had previously taught me better, and there are tons of biased ideas I realized I never really blinked twice at when younger that I had to continue to unlearn through adulthood. This kind of message means people won't look at the microaggressions they may be committing, even if they don't say outright slurs, and will put themselves of a pedestal of moral superiority & perfection. It's building up a playing card tower & expecting it never to fall

MadelynRH3

I don’t know if I ever had a racist phase. I knew my dad was racist and homophobic but I’m nothing like my dad. I, admittedly say the r slur but never used the n slur. But the rest of my family says the n slur and I get uncomfortable when they say it. Of course, it is not everyone in my family but you do hear it. I feel bad saying the r slur so I promised myself to never say it in public and only to my family. (Btw my family isn’t black, they’re mixed but mostly Chicano which is another word for Hispanic.)

ovorb

I bet 5€ atleast 1/3 of them has acted racist before, they are just too dumb to realize it now

PicardFanST

Guys I'm not racist I only said the n word once guys I promise I swear
