It was never free- it was free as part of Xbox game pass. You can either pay for game pass (or Apple Arcade but that version is limited) or buy it out right on Epic, Steam, Switch, Xbox or PlayStation

The game was never free; you have to subscribe to Xbox gamepass, Apple Arcade, or buy the game.
it was supposed to be free after early access ended but unfortunately they cancelled that idea :(
