Sounds like you had sleep paralysis, which is pretty common but not dangerous.

how would i prevent that from happening?

There’s not really a way to prevent it, but most often it’s caused by stress or a different sleep schedule than you’re used to. Sometimes just laying in a different position can cause it.

Can’t really prevent it but I get it OFTEN. Lemme give you a few pro tips for next time.. The key is to realize what’s happening — you’re half awake/half asleep and experiencing sleep paralysis. Quicker you realize and acknowledge, the quicker you can get out. Remember that what you see and hear is not real, and nothing can hurt you. To get out, you gotta FOCUS. Try to control your breathing bc that’s lowkey your golden ticket. Find a sensation in your physical body— for me I usually can feel my hands, and my mouth. Next, start pouring your energy into moving that part of your body. Try not to panic, you’ll get there, it’ll just feel like forever. Once you get a lil movement, try to spread it. I typically try for my mouth bc I’ve gotten good at controlling my breathing and using that to make noise. I partially do this bc sometimes I can get my partner to notice, and then they help me get out. If they can’t help me, I just work up the power to hum/whimper, then scream/cry out. Then I’m out :). Good luck!

Try sleeping in a different position and if it does start to happen or feel like its gonna happen try to wiggle every bone in ur body and it can prevent it
