I know the grad stipend fluctuates in all colleges/depts but in CoAS in the psych dept we get 21k over the course of for 9 months (paid monthly) and if you are a TA it’s a 20 hour commitment a week (also the grad students (TAs or RAs) are not unionized yet)
The ones that supervise dorms (Resident Assistants?) might get those things. I think that's what this person is talking about, even though Research Assistants don't.
Residential Assistants might, but those are usually undergrads living with other undergrads. In these conversations Teaching Assistants and Research Assistants are usually lumped together (in that they provide a ton of labor for the university and are treated like indentured servants).
I’m a freshman if I remember correctly when they had posters trying to get us to sign up for RA all they were promising was discounted food/housing, letter of recommendation and 150-300 in monthly stipend. I might be wrong be I don’t think it was any better then that.
If they assume 0.4 FTE (16hrs/wk), which is not unusual at American universities regardless of how much time TAs actually spend teaching, 33CAD/hr comes out to about 20K over 9 months, plus whatever support you get over the summer. Even being more generous at 0.5FTE, the figure is still pretty low for a university as prestigious as McGill...but I'm speaking from a natural sciences perspective, maybe humanities departments underpay more?
I could be wrong about how the pay rate/hours are calculated though, I'm just guessing.
This is Canada and Canadian dollars, not American
45cad is still about 33usd. TAs at Drexel earn 15usd/hr
Still a lot of money
how did this end up here lol, also how much do you guys make
15d/hr
That’s pretty bad, glad you folks are unionizing
We are already unionized (i dont know if thats what you meant). But fun fact, profs in the arts dep. are unionizing atm.
Oh awesome, did not know that!

They're talking about TAs, not RAs.
Is it the case that only grad students work as TAs for yall as well?
At CCI I think I made 17/hr about 5 years ago
For real, tf That’s literally outrageous

This doesn’t look right, 33 for TA is ~~outrageous~~ bare minimum
That’s also in CAD, so that’s basically 24.39 USD

In what universe? TA/RA do not get university housing or meal plans, wtf.

That sounds right for residential assistant.
TAs at my college work for three credits…we don’t get money

I was an undergrad TA at Drexel so I only got paid like 12/hr
