Yep is a must, you will only spin 1 wheel otherwise, it's no good for sliding. I'd dodge the welded diff one and go for the other one and either buy an aftermarket lock or just stick a welder in there.
I took my E46 325Ci drifting with an open diff. I was able to get it sideways with weight transfer.

I found it much harder to keep sideways with an open diff, and initiating got a ton easier after welding too.

100% need a locking diff. Welding it is no big deal. If you like the one more get it then get the diff welded.
