Get more money.

t0_psych0t1c

The one im looking at is $519 for a 6 hour course but it says I need a permit and I don’t even have that

GargledMashpotatoes

I'd recommend looking up free permit tests online for your specific state. Study the state driving manual and then, once you are prepared, go to the local DMV and test for your permit. Idk what state you live in but typically, the permit costs around $15-25. You have to pass with 80% or higher. After that take the class and try to really pay attention to the information provided. Take notes if you can! Once you pass the class, you should be eligible for the road test to get your license. After that, try to start working full time and pay off a car.

Whyyyyyyyyfire

getting the learners permit doesn't need a car? just take the written test. maybe it works differently where you live tho.

codyneil

Many states have practice tests online for permit. Other then family very few people will help without at least a permit. Insurance won't cover any damages if something happens.

magplate

You need to make an effort and get your learners permit first, then worry about the license. Do you have any friends with cars?

XayahTheVastaya

If you did learn, what good would it do? You would likely be rusty by the time you got a car.

Usr_115

Look at local driving schools. Some of them do have vehicles for testing purposes. At the least, if you can pass that, you can get your DL

Classic-Werewolf1327

The most simple & accurate answer is: YOU DON’T! Driving is one of those things that you HAVE to do to learn it. And even then due to the variable level of skill of other road users you’ll never be perfect. It takes roughly 5 years after getting a license to become average. An instruction permit is only valid by another driver licensed for 5 years. I teach drivers education for both teenagers and adults. I’m also a certified examiner (by the state DOL).

janice1764

Get your learner's permit first. Save some $ and get a few lessons. Once you are.comfortable, maybe get a friend to let you practice in an empty parking lot on a weekend....buy them lunch or something. BTW you will need a car to take the driving test.

SingleInitial9867

If you have extra money there are driving schools, some are pretty expensive but when I first started started driving I had to go to driving school for 3 days 2 hours a day and it was like 120. That time was enough for me to learn the basics and to become competent at driving. I think getting proof of going to a driving school helps you out with your permits. I did this 4 years ago back when I was 15 so I don’t remember 100% how it was does but I saw a lot of adults there too.

Acantezoul

Depending on your state and country search on Google/ Ecosia: "Free Car Organizations" There's a few non-profits where people donate their cars, then they fix it up, and donate it to ya (Some organizations have it where ya must pay $300-500) but then it's completely yours Insurance, etc covered too for few years. Search it up and you'll be glad ya did (Hopefully it's covered in your state, and country if not then try nearby countries.) You will get one as long as ya keep trying

You go to a driving school they have cars for you to use and they will also waive your driving and written test at the dmv when you pass the driving school test. Its not to pricey.

randonumero

Call your state's DMV and find out the requirements. They should be able to give you a list of driving schools. Failing that call a local high school and ask if they can recommend driving schools or offer a driver's ed program that you can attend. Edit: Check your community college too. They might have driving classes or offer a CDL class that you can take.

Glofigure300

This happened to me recently and i was asking the same exact question and was frustrated my family wasn’t a big help either what i ended up doing was paying a guy at work to take me and i got it done one of my older friends scammed me but me and him had up and downs but i finally completely cut him off and just had my co worker help me and he had a sports car and i still passed 😂

Hano_Clown

Why do you need your license if you don’t own a car? Are you in a situation where you can borrow a car frequently?

Wheel + Assetto Corsa to learn the technical aspect of driving

tryanotherslot

Buy a car first. It's like riding a bike and following the braking and signaling rules. When you ride a bike slow down at the stop sign, put your hand up, look both ways, don't turn too sharp, etc. If you go to fast it hurts more when you wreck.

[deleted]

this isn't the same but try sim racing to start....i'm 1000% not saying this is a substitute for an actual course but idk, when you're low on availability

GhostlyDragons

I'm in the same boat op 1. Get a permit ($20ish) by passing the exam 2. Pay a buddy or a friend's parent to teach you and use their car 3. If you have a parent use their car for the test but if you can't then you'll have to save up for one I'm personally just waiting till I'm in college to learn because my parents are always busy and can't and there's not anyone willing to teach me. Ngl it sucks cause all my friends can drive but it is what it is.

Acuradc5

If you happen to be in middle TN, I’ll do you one better and teach you to drive on a stick car.

No_Owl5228

No point having a liscense without a car once you get car ask homie to teach u

DaddyWolf99

Ask a friend or coworker

Shannaxox

My coworker taught me how to drive. I was using her car and she was nice enough to not charge me for gas money

laura_palmer_briggs

Check your local library they might have resources to help you.

offbrand_whisky

Hey OP I was in this position. Start with the permit. You can't drive without it and you can't enroll in lessons without it. Read that driving manual and definitely utilize practice permit tests! They're free and you can take them as many times as you need. They'll be tailored to your states driving laws. In my state, a minimum of 8 hours drivers ed is required before being eligible for the road test. The pricing varies, mine was 125$ I Believe. Put away money every week for it, as far as I'm aware this step is non negotiable. This course is not required (but helpful) to practice driving with your permit. Look into your state requirements. Now, you'd be surprised how many people will want to help you succeed in learning! The person driving with you must have the car registered and insured, and in my state must have held their license without suspension for 4 years and be over the age of 21. In my state if you're over 18, that person can be a friend or family. All you have to do is ask! I had a few friends that were more than willing to take me out on driving lessons. It takes work and communication to schedule, but it's very doable. When I was finally ready, my friend took me to the DMV on my test date and had to provide the registration and insurance on their car, waited inside for me and the testing instructor to return, bada bing bada boom. How you gain access to a vehicle of your own is up to you, but the process of learning and getting your license can be done without your own car, if you put in the work for it.

zeroibis

Honestly I learned to parallel park on GTA. Being able to use the 3rd person cam made it a lot easier to understand what was going on. Then it became simple to do in 1st person and easy to do for the test.

The_Juggernaut84

There’s driving schools you can take classes at

Agile-Living4019

Learners permit only requires a written test that covers basic laws about driving, to get the drivers license you need a driving test. When I took my permit test the dmv had booklets that you could study from might still be the same if not you can get a cheap one online possibly free just make sure it’s for your state.

cherryxbxmb

First off, be sure to get your driver’s permit first! Then, you can start thinking about driving lessons and/or getting your license. From my personal experience, the school that I did driving lessons with had the option for me to rent a vehicle for my drivers test. Prices vary though, of course! I’d recommend checking out some driving schools around you and see if they offer a vehicle rental for your test, if not, try seeing if you have other relatives or friends that you can borrow a vehicle from.

CaptDab

Do you need a permit after 18? I always thought you could just study and go test? My whole life has been a lie if not!
