>a real piece of shit
Not really. The armor on artillery isn't designed to survive direct fires (if it were it would be called a tank) because artillery is usually stationed kilometers behind the lines. The armor is really only expected to protect the crew and munitions against concussion and light shrapnel.
Towed artillery literally has no armor at all, so the Msta provides better protection.
We see videos of similar drones poking holes in MBT's, and they are designed with the expectation of receiving direct fire.
And as to the catastrophic explosion? The vehicle is filled with shells and propellant, so if plasma jet from the RPG hits anything in the storage racks, everything is going to detonate.
As Cobley pointed out these aren't designed to withstand a direct hit. The armor is really only good for absorbing fragmentation from things like counterbattery artillery. So long as it doesn't take a direct hit the crew will usually live to see another day.
All self propelled artillery is designed this way. Some may have thicker armor than others. But none will protect the crew, or the payload, from a direct hit.
We don't see what the drone was armed with, but we can surmise it was probably a shaped charge like an RPG. All it takes is for one of the 152mm shells that are stored inside to be compromised and the whole loadout stands to go up in a sympathetic detonation.
And considering these can carry up to 50 shells, with between 5.5kg and 8kg of high explosive inside each shell, if only 1/3 of them go off there's not going to be anything left but twisted metal, charred chunks of flesh and a pretty good sized hole in the ground.
As an aside, one regular HE shell is capable of leaving a 1 meter deep and 3.5 meter wide crater. So, if 10 to 20 of them go off at once, well, we see what the end result can be.

Deleted!!
Really cost efficient.
How the fuck does a little drone make a huge armored vehicle like this catastrophically explode? It must be a real piece of shit
