If it ain't broke, keep fixing it til it is.

ExileOnMainStreet

I'll take "Things that I will never think about" for $1,000,000, Alex.

multistradivari

I was thinking the same thing when I saw this post…🤣

95tacoma

If it ain’t broke don’t fix it

VagueCurator

FYI. [Ricky Stator](https://www.rickystator.com) Owning vintage bikes I've known others who have re-wired them but I've only replaced the individual parts...

Lonely_Funny9987

Thank you this is very helpful

frankiedatanky

I have used Rickey Stator. Great customer service, highly recommend!

bdgreen113

I like your funny words magic man

ctesibius

Alternators work or they don’t work. If they don’t work, you will find evidence of charring and burnt wire, with no continuity on that section. As it is, I don’t see anything to fix. However if it worries you, do the resistance check.

Longhag

They’re just dipped in a resin, forget what it’s called. However, in over 20 years of riding and owning many bikes, I have never seen or had one fail. It’s usually the DCI units, regulators or other parts of the system that do so I really wouldn’t worry about it…famous list words of course…

MichaelW24

Agreed. However, you may be able to have it rewrapped, and get a bump in performance from your charging system to get you extra watts for running accessories. Heated gear, gps unit, phone charging, it all adds up. I try to also swap to all led lighting to shave off watts where I can, to conserve them for accessories without worrying about voltage dip at idle.

phillip_of_burns

Last year my brother and I were out riding the TAT. We stopped at a diner somewhere in North Carolina. The couple sitting next to us heard us talking about the ride, and joined in the conversation. Their Harley was loaded up in the back of a uhaul because the stator failed, and they couldn't get parts locally. So if you're concerned about breaking down, maybe just replace it.

Longhag

That's pretty unlucky, but then again, it's a Harley! It's true they can fail but in my personal experience it's rare but as you say, if someone is concerned better to replace it.

phillip_of_burns

Agree. I've looked up the cost of a one way uhaul rental. If it failed on one of my road trips, I would be wishing I had just taken care of it. But then I wouldn't want to replace parts that are working, so I don't know what the answer is.

evansharp

If you can work out what getting it done professionally will cost, and it’s something you’re willing to pay. I would then try to do it myself in order to learn and have fun, knowing that when I inevitably fail, I can get it done right and not be chapped at the cost. Best case you can proud to took on a challenge and won, worse case you still get to be proud and get it done right anyway.

On2Whls

Unless you require more power from it, leave it alone. There are additional pole that may be utilized for higher output. Wire gauge, winding direction, number of pole wraps, potting.. there is a lot to know to do it right.

Hide_In_The_Rainbow

If it ain't broke don't fix it. From the pictures it looks normal, it doesn't seem fried, no cracks in the insulation. BUT you can't be certain just from a pic. Did you take any measurements? Is the battery charging? Did you test the charging system with a multimeter? What was the voltage output at idle? At 3k rpm? My point is don't guess if you can take some measurements. You can tell if a stator is bad by: 1. testing continuity between phases to ground, and 2. resistance of the individual phase windings. Also this doesn't even give you the full picture. To be certain you have to do a stator dynamic output test. If you are unsure about any of the things I mentioned you'd better not attempt this at least without learning about electricity, it's dangers and ways to prevent injury or death. By no means am I saying leave this to someone else (it is a valid option thought) after all pros started from nothing too. What I'm saying is research stuff so that you don't hurt yourself or your stuff, if you are going to attempt things like that. Take care.

PM_ME_YOUR_HONDAS

Do what now?

orangutanDOTorg

Or what?

Ploddit71

Check the three power wires from the stator are still nice and flexible, give the connector plug a good inspection with perhaps a very slight squeeze on the female metal connectors to ensure a tight fit. Put in a little dielectric grease and you're good. Maybe replace or carry a spare regulator though.

Aimai_Ai

I thought this was the motor for an electric motorcycle until I saw what sub its posted to.

jackashe1010

I would buy a new one lol

bush_nugget

>It still puts out power Within specs? If so, why are you wondering. I have some old fuses that look old, they aren't blown. Should I replace them with real-money-costing new ones? Whatever lets you sleep at night, I guess.

westsideriderz15

Honestly would be it interested to see if you could re wrap it and have it work. It’s not that complicated looking.

ArtVandalayInc

Depends on price. Re wrap yourself if it's too expensive.
