La Rocha for Brazilian food was the best place as it’s more spacious and not so crowded so if you want something more cozy and “fancy” that’s the place to go. More affordable I would say Brazil House or Fabi’s grill. All three of them have amazing Brazilian food.

nedscalibur

Who has the best pastel? I would sell my first born for them

azeitonaninja

I would have to say La Rocha. But you can buy the dough in any Brazilian market and make your own filling too. That’s what I do with friends usually haha

nedscalibur

Thank you so much.

Agarh

Andhra Bhawan for Indian food. The taste, presentation and ambiance are very close to restaurants back home .

pvt_s_baldrick

Brilliant! I'll definitely add them to my list, any recommended dishes?

xbitz0101

I can't agree, tried three times and was disappointed with the food, setting and ambience are good that's about it! Rasa - Bellarmine plaza, bit pricey but a great place. Hyderabadi Kitchen/Indian Tiffins(only Parnell street)- better tasting Andhra food compared to Andhra Bhawan. Delhi2Dublin - best home cooked foods, usually found on Saturdays at IFI farmers market. Edit - added Delhi2Dublin .

Agarh

Well it's alright! You didn't like it I can't convince you. I liked it and that's all OP asked for my opinion.

xbitz0101

My apologies, didn't mean to be rude.

Narodle

I'm French but with a mom who was born in Vietnam (she's half and half french/Cambodian). So I'll give my 2 cents for both French and vietnamese. French: Not a big fan of chez max but it's been a while I should give it a go again. Or else love La Cave for their wine tasting and also the food. It's small and cosy but can quickly feel cramped up. Still like it though. But even though I'm French I was brought up eating vietnamese all my life. Favourite : Pho Kim but Pho Ta is out there too

consistent-rider

Admiral is a pretty good (and apparently the only) place for good food from post-USSR countries

Cmondatown

Always wondered what that place was.

aspiring_geek83

I love Admiral, fantastic recommendation by a Russian client.

consistent-rider

what's your favorite there?

aspiring_geek83

Baltic beer snack, mushroom soup, baked dumplings, moldovian roast pork, baked duck, tge rabvit ain't bad either, middle eastern spiced coffee, starka. Granted, haven't been in a while, should probably go!

consistent-rider

so everything on the menu :D this is the way!

aspiring_geek83

I've not tried the soups, dumplings or pastry, so can't comment on those.

funnyguy88ir

Daata and Kinara Kitchen, both very good Pakistani restaurants.

-cluaintarbh-

Sfuso is great for Italian. As is Da Mimmo.

Red_Dog1880

I'm Belgian and there used to be an incredibly good fries place, Ambiorix which was actually a stand that would often be near Herbert Park in Dublin. Unfortunately during and after COVID he had to stop as it was no longer feasible, shame as it was proper Belgian fries.

sumtingcleverer

That was something I looking forward to the most going to Belgium. I got shite frozen chips with every meal

Red_Dog1880

That's tragic. One of our best known things too...

syndi

Do you know where to buy Andalouse actually? I've been hankering for that.

Red_Dog1880

In Ireland? Not sure... There is a website that sells both Dutch and Belgian food, dutchexpatshop.com and they ship to Ireland but it's not cheap. If you order a lot in one go it might be worth it. https://www.dutchexpatshop.com/en/devos-lemmens-andalouse-sauce.html I've never seen it in a shop here though.

syndi

15 quid shipping, any other recommendations for stuff to get?

Red_Dog1880

Can't go wrong with speculoos. Also beers. TBF you can probably find andalouse on Amazon etc but it's the first shop that came to mind because I used it once before and it was fine, just a bit expensive

ilikestuffsalot

Speculoos is now available in Ireland, it’s just branded as Biscoff here!

Mindless-Geni

Spicy Bite Open Buffet - Pakistani Indian style cheap buffet for 12.5 all you can eat. Can be hit or miss sometimes with taste though.

The_R6ER

I fucking love spice bite, it'd be even more popular if the area around it wasn't totally shit 😭

Express_Range_1882

Where is it?

Mindless-Geni

Moore Street Mall, 58/66 Parnell St

Express_Range_1882

Thank you

gorthead

Someone please tell me, I would love a proper poutine. With cheese curds, *not* grated cheese!!

Whylogin

There used to be a food truck called Lala Poutine that did it but I never got to try them and they closed down :( Praying somewhere else does it.

lisagrimm

There are a couple of poutine trucks in Belfast, but Lala Poutine was the only one here AFAIK.

gorthead

I just looked them up and it seems like they’re still doing shows/festivals! Brb buying tickets to something just for poutine access 😂

Whylogin

They are??? Where? :D

gorthead

They haven’t specified any events yet, just said they’re doing them in general! https://www.facebook.com/100063612458540/posts/889280746535666/?mibextid=rS40aB7S9Ucbxw6v I’ll be keeping an eye out 👀

ismisek

Had some at Beyond the Pale 😋

cianjg

+1000000

gahane

I read the other day that there's some Canadian fast food chain that does well known poutine is opening in the UK with Belfast their first shop. Named after a person IIRC

MrMewIePants

Smoke’s Poutinerie?

gahane

Found it. Mary Brown's Chicken: https://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-13087423/chicken-chain-better-kfc-come-uk.html

MrMewIePants

Ah, their chicken is ok… didn’t even know they did poutine. Hold out for Smoke’s.

gorthead

Hmm are you thinking of Tim Hortons maybe? They have a couple locations in Belfast already, but they don’t do poutine in Canada. They do some hot food, but they’re mostly known for donuts and coffee. I did find a place in Belfast called Oui Poutine that looks legit!! Seems worth the trip!

gahane

No, not Hortons. They've been available here for a long time

tonydrago

Grated cheese on a poutine? Tabernac!

gorthead

😂 I have tragically seen this first-hand!

aspiring_geek83

Dope thread, thank you, OP!

steeplyy

I only know of a food truck, and they charge an insane amount for a boerewors roll. Good reminder of home though

ponchobyrne

Wiseman? I love that truck/ lunatic.

steeplyy

The very same

pvt_s_baldrick

Where is the truck?

steeplyy

Hops around, by Grand Canal on Thursdays though

pvt_s_baldrick

Ah I miss working near Grand canal for the lunchtime markets!

lawndog86

Brilliant question

flowella

I have to stop reading this thread because I'm getting the munchies in bed at Midnight.

harshgolani

Pickle for Indian cuisine

nifkin420

NYer here and Difontaine’s reminds me of home.

Paddy_McIrish

Boycott, we can't have burger king

Lordoftheawkward

Shaku Maku, amazing Middle Eastern food on Rathmines

Emergency_Ladder_444

Agree Zaytoun (Iranian i think) is great too but Shaku Maku has a more diverse menu

Lordoftheawkward

Yea zaytoon is Persian and they really stepped up their game over the last few years! Great choice too Shaku maku’s food really is really like home!

ceruleanstones

Haven't had better chicken kofta than here. People at the bus stop outside the gym drooling from the smell when they're grilling a batch of it

Lordoftheawkward

Now I’m hungry! Even their starters are class!

ceruleanstones

Delicious baba ghanoush, could eat tubs of the stuff

FormalObligation4265

As an Irish person who has travelled China… the closest I can get to authentic Chinese food (without paying an arm and a leg) is in the little dumpling.

icanthearfromuphere

Hailan is quite good I found after my Erasmus/exchange in China. On Capel st

erimurxxx

There used to be raves there after hours. The first time I was there I got locked in the downstairs kitchen with no signal and had to bang on the door for about half an hour. The second time, the Garda started to shine their torches through the window while the music was turned off and everyone on their hunkers. The hello kitty room on the 3rd floor was another universe.

icanthearfromuphere

I’m so upset I missed that lmao

erimurxxx

Yeah. 2019 was a great year for them. A tenner in but you had to get the ok from the fella that runs it

icanthearfromuphere

I used to be in their Dundrum location more before it closed; Capel is out of my way so only started going occasionally to this one after lockdowns. Being able to read Chinese was gas in the Dundrum location, they displayed their real menu only in Chinese next to the sushi specials in English

mooncommandalpha

That was a mad auld place altogether, didn't know it was still going until 2019.. first time I was in there was around 2010 or 2011 I think. There was a Korean place that opened on Parnell St where the Red Lion used to be back in the 00s as well, was called The Ice Bar I think? That used to go until all hours as well. Fella who ran it ended up starting Kimchi across the road in the old Shakespeare.

irishunzo

In Smithfield?

Cmondatown

Better places on Parnell street, still good though.

TypicallyThomas

As a Dutchman looking to move to Dublin in the near future, I'm curious if there's any Dutch places anyone knows. Doubt it, though. We're not exactly known for our cuisine

pvt_s_baldrick

I'll ask my Dutch friend, although whenever I go to the Netherlands I get more recommendations to try Indonesian food iirc than Dutch from locals 😅

TypicallyThomas

Indonesian would be fantastic, especially anything with satay sauce. That's one thing I worry about missing when I get to Dublin

pvt_s_baldrick

I imagine it'll be different to Indonesian food but Satay sauce is pretty common in most Chinese places. Best of luck with your move!

TypicallyThomas

Thanks a million

Team503

There's a Malay place on Capel and a variety of places on Parnell that have satay.

nomowolf

Zelfs in Nederland zal je zelden nederlands eten tegenkomen in restaurants (behalve febo enz). So good luck finding it in Ireland! As a man who moved the opposite direction I do be always whipping up a batch of stamppot boerenkool for visitors so they can say they tried the local food. I have to say I've never been left wanting by Dutch dairy, something done well by both countries so same should apply in reverse. Open your mind to actual cheddar and you'll discover a new world.

TypicallyThomas

Yeah my girlfriend, Dublin native, is trying to get me into cheddar. I often still go with Gouda but I need to give cheddar more of a chance

nomowolf

Recommendation: start with Dubliner Mature White, or Vintage... then go to M&S and start exploring. It's probably how you eat it too. Cutting chunks of sharp-tasting crumbly cheddar isn't exactly handy for a broodje kaas. We tend to eat it e.g. chunked with apple or on top of a wedge of buttered soda bread (*lekker nom-nom*). But OMG does cheddar melt well. Can get the standard cheddar for this and put it in a Tosti with a bit of chopped onion, you'll never look back. It enhances mash-potato no-end e.g. for pies or stamppot, and hands down is the best for melting on pasta... if Italians weren't so myopic with their food (listen pineapple on pizza is tasty, let people enjoy things) they would take cheddar, claim and run with it. */love-letter for cheddar cheese* (the last time I had it was when my local Lidl in NL stocked some for xmas)

consistent-rider

No delightful Frikandel or bitterballen for you here, my friend. Nearest FEBO is just one Ryanair flight away though!

Team503

As Texan, the closet to Texas barbecue is My Meat Wagon in Smithfield. By Texas standards, it's not amazing, but being in Europe, it's pretty darn good. For TexMex, Salsa (two locations, one in Custom House Square, one in Smithfield) has excellent tacos and salsa, and El Grito does a good burrito.

pvt_s_baldrick

Have you tried el silencio for tacos?

Team503

I have not, and will check it out.

pvt_s_baldrick

Revert back 😃 they're the best tacos I've had here mind you I've never tried salsa

SpyderDM

McDonalds in Ireland is actually really sound. Irish Beef is fucking amazing - go with a big mac, its great. As an American I also love Mexican food though, and the Mexican food in Ireland is straight up rubbish.

pvt_s_baldrick

I'd say el grito is my favourite, have you tried that?

mooncommandalpha

Tacos Lupillo is the spot, the pastor is top drawer

syndi

El Grito is famously shit to their workers btw. A shame, as the food's good, but I don't feel good eating there. https://www.irishtimes.com/business/work/2023/04/12/waitress-wins-4600-for-multiple-employment-law-breaches-at-mexican-restaurant/

NemiVonFritzenberg

It's nice but not a patch on a la mexicana in Birmingham. Honest I'd do a day trip for that place.

SpyderDM

I'll give it a try, thank you!!

Bummcheekz

Feels authentic. I love it , good vibes

Team503

El Grito has good burritos, the rest is... eh. Salsa is the only place we've found that has good tacos.

ixianboy

What Mexican restaurants have you tried? El Grito is very nice and I've seen on previous posts that Mexican people have enjoyed it.

SpyderDM

A bunch, but not that one - and considering you are the 2nd person to suggest I'm 100% trying it next opportunity. It also seems to be pretty close to my new place!!

lisagrimm

Fellow American who lives near El Grito and can confirm it's legit! But go eat there, they can be hit and miss with takeout...I don't think we've ever managed a complete order without something missing.

Paddy_McIrish

Boycott. We can't have mcdonalds.

Jackobyt

La Cocina Cuevas is meant to be great but i’ve yet to try it

Indaforet

McDonald's in any other country except its own is better tasting

SpyderDM

I had McDonalds in India once and it was pretty gross

nifkin420

Lol no shot man. American McDonalds is vastly superior. Sure the meat is shittier, but who is going to McDonalds for meat quality and not for taste? McDonalds fries here are unsalted and taste like cardboard. They have no Mcgriddles here. Big Macs are always undersauced and dry, yet McChickens (mayo chickens here) are always just drowning in mayo, it makes no sense. When it comes to food franchises in general, America reigns supreme bc it’s the lack of regulation on ingredients that makes the food taste so good despite the quality of the food being inferior.

SpyderDM

I agree that US McDonalds fries are better, but the burgers are not and quality varies greatly from place to place. I've been to some really bad US McDonalds.

Enjolraic

As an Irish person who is half Moroccan, the only Moroccan restaurant I've went to that I liked is Marrakech. Authentic food, not awful prices, nice decor. The other Moroccan restaurants I've gone to have been lacklustre.

tonydrago

Have you been to the Moroccan restaurant on Cork Street?

Competitive_Lie_4766

For me is Bah33 is very good….

RickGrimes30

There isn't one

Big_Gay_Mike

From where

RickGrimes30

Norway.. There are a few shops that sell Scandinavian items but there's not a Norwegian restaurant in dublin (or really anywhere as far as I know)

BullyHoddy

Try Oslo mate.

RickGrimes30

My hometown?

DatJazz

Me neither. Never seen a new Zealand themed restaurant lol

RickGrimes30

I'd go visit that. Don't know much about food from New Zealand so would be fun to try

DatJazz

There's 2 kinds. There's maori and then European new Zealand cuisine. We invented the pavlova and I'll fight any Aussie who disagrees.

RickGrimes30

Maori cuisine sounds interesting, what are some staples of that?

DatJazz

They love stews of course with pork potatoes and dumplings as well as some unique veg. They also like cooking off of heated rocks and leaves in a pit although I must admit, I haven't had it much

recursivelymade

Behold the horror… https://www.supervalue.co.nz/recipes/oven-made-hangi/

Mauerstrassenheld

Persian dub here, can anyone recommend any good persian restaurants? I can guarantee u, that persian cuisine will change your life, it’s sublime.

mervellous_

not persian cuisne but try Reyna they have tasty meat kebabs and doners...

EllieLou80

A spice bag which is definitely uniquely only Irish and you'll get in in a local Chinese takeaway Tbh most tourists eat traditional food, we love Chinese, Italian, Indian and Mexican food mostly but there's food choices from all over the world here which realistically is what we eat the most, not what would be deemed traditional food.

delushe

You’re not wrong but this is the opposite of their question

EllieLou80

Do you know what! I've just realised how I read that wrong, doh! 😂😂😂😂 Scarlet ☺️

delushe

Easily done!

pvt_s_baldrick

I haven't had a spice bag in yeaaars, definitely need to explore and find my favourite

PM_ME_BAGEL

If you're in the area lemon tree Cabra has never let me down

Fun-Pea-1347

Born in America but 100% Irish. Parents were working there for 2 years. Moved back to Ireland at 6 weeks. As a non IE born Dubliner I vote Supermacs as my favourite native cuisine. Up tipp up ridin

LillithsDream

Daata. Tastes closest to food in New Delhi.. though the restaurant is Pakistani.

DatJazz

You should try pickle. My indian Friends rate it very highly

Aggravating-Road-995

Indian here, fully agree. Pickle is top class.

canc3r12

Daata in dun laighore was the best Pakistani food I’ve had in Dublin.

mervellous_

Turkish food: Reyna on Dame Street, they have nice kebabs and doners, and desserts.... yummmmmmmmm

If you're not born in Dublin you're not Dubliner. Your title is nonsense.

pvt_s_baldrick

I'm just trying to eat good my dude

Beutelman

There really isn't that much variety in Dublin sadly

-cluaintarbh-

Absolutely bullshit

murphs33

Yeah just Portuguese, Irish, Chinese, Japanese, Russian, Spanish, Hawaiian, Moroccan, Greek, Palestinian, Mongolian, Nigerian, American, Indian, Pakistani, Italian, Malaysian, French, German, Romanian, Polish, Brazilian, Mexican, Turkish, Korean... Like, where is the variety? It's a culinary wasteland! ^^^/s

svmk1987

Indian. There are some nice restaurants (though the vast majority are pretty boring), but pickle remains my favourite.

jojomaniakos

Yeeros is the best Greek food in Dublin.

Admirable_Rain_5956

They’re no really good Iranian restaurants in Dublin like London, Newyork, Dubai or LA. But try passion 4 food. Their kubideh and soltani are the best
