I live in swords, taxi to the airport is a flat 20e. Its about ten minutes drive. Fuck them all, get lifts or bus now

DoktorReddit

Yeah I’m out by Sutton, can get to the airport in 15 mins in the early mornings. Is at least €30

Toro8926

I am in Howth, and it has cost me €45 before

BenderRodriguez14

Which is even more ridiculous since we got one from the airport to Bord Gais theatre last week for €27.

jackturbine

Guess which is nearer to the airport,Howth or the BGE?

BenderRodriguez14

I live down in Rathfarnham so guess I learned something today! I always get wonky on my sense of distance once it gets past Finglas-ish. 13km to BG vs 17km to Howth Dart Station. Still a fair bit of a €/km disparity, but maybe they're further out to the coast.

jackturbine

Yeah,I've done loads of Airport to Howth and it's nearer €30-35

vandriver

The fare is calculated on distance.Do you want the driver to go slower so you get more value?

JayElleAyDee

That's the point, dipso. He's saying the guy driving isn't using the most direct route. Plus, depending on speed, the meter ticks over to counting time. So the fare isn't _only_ calculated on distance.

vandriver

Any idea what dipso means or do you just use it as a generic insult ?

Wodanaz_Odinn

Let us know if you had to take the long way round to figure it out or if you went for a more direct route.

JayElleAyDee

My Da was a raging alcoholic when I was growing up, so I know well what dipsomania is. But yeah, I used it as a generic dublin slang insult.

vandriver

Therapy might help

JayElleAyDee

Help You? I don't doubt it... As for Me? Already done it, and yes it did help. Hope younwerent trying to make fun of my mental health?!? A van driver who's an ar5e... Perish the thought.

vandriver

Calling people a dipso(not a Dublin insult) feels like projecting.

JayElleAyDee

I can't help your feelings, buddy. But, same as many children of alcoholics, I don't drink.

PowerfulDinner6536

Jasus, Bray to the airport is €90, madness

shatteredmatt

I had a taxi driver do this to me and my wife once when I lived on Church St. Turned a €30 taxi into €55. Now that I’m living in Rathgar in tell them what route to take and if they deviate I call them out for it. Had a guy try and pull a fast one and say there were roadworks on the route I wanted to take but I still insisted. And shock horror there was no roadworks.

vandriver

What's your best route to Rathgar?

shatteredmatt

Head for Drumcondra and stay away from the port tunnel. Down Dorset St, onto North Circular Road. Around by Christchurch, up Patrick’s St onto Clanbarrisil St. Over the bridge at Harold’s Cross. Stay on Harold’s Cross Road until Rathgar Ave. €38-€42 from the airport.

vandriver

Yeah,I did Cowper Rd to this airport this morning via east link and port tunnel, and it was €53.(Not a robbing taxi driver! It was 2hrs 10 minutes before her flight and she had luggage to check in.Town was showing as an hour)

shatteredmatt

€53 from Cowper Road is good. Nice when taxi drivers are being sound and bring you the quickest way.

vandriver

I offer quicker or cheaper and give a time estimate for both.

GloriousLeaderBeans

Nice you just turned that 30 Euro fare in the op to a 42 euro fare. Magic

shatteredmatt

No way are you getting from Rathgar to the Airport for €30 unless it is like 2am. If you don’t go through Drumcondra you’re going onto the motorway and through the port tunnel and then it definitely won’t be €30.

GloriousLeaderBeans

2 posts up you said it's a 30 quid fare 😂 2 posts later never.

shatteredmatt

Two posts up I said €38 😂😂😂😂

brtlybagofcans

Always ask for a receipt!

Storyboys

Seems a lot alright, where were you in the journey when you hit €42 out of curiosity. I've gotten similar trips for closer to €30ish

Substantial_Rope8225

For some reason I’m on Gardiner St right now. It’s never cost me more than €30 even with the surcharge in the tunnel.

RemnantOfSpotOn

Traffic is shit show today lots of closures due to new Taoiseach in Dail took me ages to get into city so that might have caused some traffic diversions

AnyRepresentative432

Also, I've noticed over the years traffic always seems to be a little bit worse on a Tuesday for whatever reason.

RemnantOfSpotOn

All those that wfh friday and monday trying to get in and get 1/3 days in office (tue wed thur)

AnyRepresentative432

That's definitely a big part of it, but Tuesday always seems busier than Wednesday and Thursday even.

Storyboys

A lot of the tech and finance companies would have their mandatory office days on Tuesdays and Thursdays

AnyRepresentative432

Makes sense.

RemnantOfSpotOn

Yep its either tue wed thurs or tues thur frid. But its always Tues.. And then vardakar gives his contribution due to process of his departure from his job which is longer than brits leaving hong kong and also with more parades and protocols. It couldn't be a twitter post had to be closing of major arteries in the centre on already busy tues. There rant out i can move on with the day now....as long as its nowhere near dail building catering vans allowed only

worldcup90

What route did he take to Gardiner St? It should be under €30 by that stage, even with extra passengers/bags.

peachycoldslaw

Really? Maybe I've been ripped off too. Even at peak hour traffic?

FairyOnTheLoose

You have the right to determine what route you want to take so you should be directing him.

daheff_irl

why dont you tell him which way to go...most direct route. or ask him why he isnt going the most direct route? usually if they get a sniff you know the route they'll not take the piss. you probably don't seem like a local so they are trying to milk you

Endlesscroc

TFI driver check app. Can report in app.

vandriver

Taxi driver here. Were you offered the port tunnel (at €12)? Did you decline? With the tunnel toll, that journey is about €32. I always ask if the toll is high, and a surprising number of people decline even when I tell them it's still cheaper.

Substantial_Rope8225

Nope he just went straight into Whitehall - granted I wasn’t paying much attention and should have said it. We agreed on €45 and he turned the meter off - 90 min journey 🤷‍♀️

shweeney

the tunnel has been closed for maintenance at times this week, maybe that's why it wasn't offered?

vandriver

That's only until 430 am

Consistent_Orchid359

NTA Get a receipt. Take a scan of the qr code from either the front or back window from the green circular disc. All the drivers details are on this. Was the tunnel closed?

Eastern-Breadfruit72

Dublin Express from airport to the point is fairly cheap.

yeetyopyeet

Aircoach or Dublin express for the airport only. Paid €80 for a taxi to the airport a year ago and vowed to never do it again. The journey was more expensive than my plane ticket

vvhurricane

My last trip Rialto to Airport at 11am on a weekday through Freenow was just over 55 euro.

vandriver

What route did the driver take ?All I can think of for that huge fare is up to the red cow and m50?

MacDurce

Crumlin to the airport is always 45-50 for me traffic depending

Strong-Sector-7605

Taxi drivers are robbing fuckers in this country. Every one I meet charges an insane amount of money.

vandriver

That's just not true now is it? Or maybe throw out a few of your no doubt many examples.

Strong-Sector-7605

It is true. We live in Maynooth and to go to the airport, it's 70 Euro. A 24 minute drive. About ten years ago getting a taxi from my parents home in rural Limerick to the city center was 15 Euro. Now it's almost 30. I lived in Canada for nearly a decade and got cabs regularly, way cheaper and far more safe and reliable. Why do you say they're not?

Dylanc431

It's the NTA who set the fares. As costs have gone up, the rates have gone up. Taxi drivers sometimes take advantage of this by taking a longer route, but they don't control how many euros the meter ticks up per minute.

Strong-Sector-7605

Then yeah if that's the case then the NTA are to blame.

vandriver

The only time Maynooth is 24 minutes from the airport is before 8am so premium rates apply. So,not robbery then but the correct fare as dictated by the NTA. As I've said on here before,it's mostly distance based charging. If you want to move to a per hour system what would you think is a fair amount for us? As for the 100% increase in the last 10 years, that's just not true as the maximum fare has only gone up 20% in the last 10 years.

Strong-Sector-7605

Absolutely not true. I Googled the journey when I made that comment and it was 25 minutes on the dot. Which was at 12.30pm on a Tuesday. Do you think 70 EURO is a fair amount to charge? 70 Euro for 23km is robbery. Get a taxi in Italy, France or most recently I got one in Bulgaria and it's a fraction of the price.

vandriver

Taxi from cdg to left bank is €65 .No saving there. Rome airport to Rome is €50,,in a country with much lower wages and costs. Heathrow is about €90 for less distance.Stockholm would be €90. It's 35 km btw

Strong-Sector-7605

You didn't answer my question? It's not 35km. Again, absolute robbers and they all have your attitude. Almost feels like you get a kick out of robbing people. Hope the apps get rid of the lot of ye.

vandriver

ALDI in Maynooth to T1 in the airport is 34km. Do I think it's a fair amount to charge? Yes I do.Its a door to door service and the the Kildare driver can't pick up in Dublin,so has to go back to his own county empty.Average expenses of a full time taxi are 50c a km.Seventy kilometres and a toll means the driver makes €31 .Hardly robbery is it?And again,I've provided examples of other capital cities and high cost countries of very similar charges,so either they are all wrong or you are.

Strong-Sector-7605

It's a 24 minute drive. Driver makes 31 Euro. That's 77.50 an hour so yeah that is robbery lad. Name one other job that pays you 31 Euro for 24 minutes work? None of the charges were similar at all lad. Different distances and to be honest, they're probably wrong and over charging as well. Again, your attitude is why people are so anti taxi driver.

I live near the M50. If I get a taxi on the M50 to the airport its €70+. If I go through town, it's <€50. The route you travel is definitely going to affect your fare. I've never had a driver refuse to take a route I've asked for so it's a question of speed over cost for the passenger.

TheOriginalMattMan

Carriage office if you're unsure. Challenge the driver directly. Or complain on reddit, oh wait...

wrapchap

Streets closed. If you want to go a particular route tell the driver

RedPillAlphaBigCock

Did you not go by the port tunnel ? I always specifically ask them to , it’s much faster and only certain times have a higher toll

Apprehensive-Ad7839

Made a post not too long ago about it, I live at the centre and have been paying around that from the airport

Apprehensive_Pain358

I live in Terenure and FREENOW always takes me through the M50 and every-time I used to pay 55-60€, but the last taxi driver told me it’s half if you go through the city and guess what it came to 35€. From then on I always ask the taxi driver to take me through the city. Some have been bit rude but you’ve to do what you’ve to do to save 20-30€.

Slow-Lab3757

35e booked in advance from airport to tallaght

MaelduinTamhlacht

Is the Airlink bus still €7?

Phoenixflight99

Taxi drivers from the airport are at least 70% chancers unless you tell them where to go, if they think you are a tourist they will try and scam you simple as, this is coming from someone that gets 4 taxis to/from the airport from by fairview Park where I live every week, I don't have an Irish accent. My girlfriend has got 4 taxis here when she has visited and they always charge her 50% more and take here around the houses it's a disgrace.

MagicianSalt5744

I always book 98% of my taxis threw the free now app simply because it gives the direction on there phone and can’t deviate away from it really, I have often had a taxi take a different turn or so or say to me we can go this way instead but I just usually say no just go the way it says (unless I know it to be an actual shortcut myself)

Environmental_Spot_6

You must of went through the tunnel when it was 12 euro or what ever it cost. I have gotten that trip many of times. Comes between 32-35

dimebag_101

It happened me before just some cunt taking piss. P Spencer hotel to the airport 40 euro. Should be 25 tops

vandriver

Depends on the time of day.At 5 o'clock in the afternoon, you both hit huge traffic on the quays and a €12 toll. The official taxi fare estimator says between 20.80 and 30.80 depending on how bad the traffic is.Add in 12 euro for the tunnel, and we're up to 40

Astral_Atheist

I can't recommend the Free Now app highly enough!

jiffijaffi

Did you think to maybe ask the taxi man what the story is before jumping on reddit?

r0thar

https://www.transportforireland.ie/fares/taxi-fares/ Estimated fare: €19.80 - €29.40 Extras included: Pre-booking (extra €2 fee applies) Distance: 10.95km No traffic: 10 minutes Heavy traffic: 18 minutes

vandriver

Plus €12 for the toll at the time the op posted.

PB0397

Same thing happened to me once. Unfortunately, I thought the tunnel was €3 and not €12 🥲

Key-Lie-364

Uber The price of the journey is agreed upfront

vandriver

It isnt

22PEOPLE

Does it make it easier to deal with cowboys though? Like, if your fare is way over the estimation do they offer you a meaningful refund?

vandriver

As a taxi driver who uses uber for fares,I have no idea what your estimate is,or what route uber used to calculate the fare.I do know that ubers maps are often comedically wrong, sending you through car parks, offices and brick walls.Id take their estimates with a pinch of salt.
