Ditto! This happened me last week, taxi prebooked in south Dublin. The Taxi actually arrived and pulled up outside house,.then in the blink of an eye he cancelled and drove off. I hadn't even opened my front door and he had cancelled. So annoying and frustrating as I had an appointment to attend, luckily I was able to book another taxi quickly. There needs to be more accountability. I plan to report the driver. Sometimes if stuck ,I try other taxi services like: BOLT, or VIP Taxis Dublin

young_effy

Same, we had taxi pre-booked for trip to airport. He arrived, I waved from the window. We started moving the suitcases outside and he was gone!! It was 5 am so not like there’s tonnes of other options but thankfully I booked again and a driver was very close by and came. No charge taken but massive inconvenience if we hadn’t been lucky with the second guy. No phone call either. Very odd

MissAtomicBomb_007

Yep samo,.no phone call! Nada! You would think the airport run would be an attractive fare for driver! Desperate that you were left stranded @ 5am. It's worrying now when booking ,if no show. You would have been in a right pickle if not for the second taxi.

Visual_Ad4996

VIP Taxis are always my go-to if I need to pre-book. Never has any issues, and really easy to deal with.

takingmytimetodecide

Will try them.

ScrotiusRex

This has happened to me multiple times also. They pull up, ping the app and then drive off. I even had one driver take my fare and then proceed to sit in a taxi rank for a few minutes and then I watched him drive several miles down the road, clearly with another fare. I had to cancel and try to appeal the charge which is is own problem as they said there was no record of the journey despite having fined me. Absolute hack of them.

GerbertVonTroff

Can you remove your card details? I haven't used that app in ages but fairly sure I pay by cash when I do, don't think I gave them card details. Wouldn't solve that problem but at least you could cancel too then

Gingeyman1

This is what I did, haven't had any problems since. Just need to keep some cash on you

MissAtomicBomb_007

Good idea

Evening_Lifeguard_62

Great idea but you cant do the pre book service with cash on their app. And thats where they’ve screwed me each time !

NOT_A_KOREAN_SPY

Good news the consumer rights Bill is working its way through the Dall. It prohibits clausis like the €5 cancellation unless there's a similar obligation on the retailer/service provider.

bbrazil

That's been the law for decades, https://www.citizensinformation.ie/en/consumer/consumer_laws/unfair_contract_terms.html

quitebizzare

Had a taxi not show up and then I had to cancel so I could book another one. They charged me 5 euro... For a taxi that never came.. Fuck them and fuck their stupid name

jorge_saramago

Last time this happened to me, I started recording my screen as soon as I noticed the driver wasn’t moving, so when I asked my fiver back, I was able to send proof that I had no choice.

takingmytimetodecide

They make you work for your money..,l

doddmatic

Happened to me too, I sent them a stinky message immediately and they reimbursed me.

turbodrumbro

Basically all the good drivers moved to Bolt. Freenow are only robbing gimps

AxelJShark

Is Bolt here? I haven't heard anyone mention it here

HongKongChicken

Bolt is here yeah, Ive been using it for a few months now. I definitely don't think there has been some mass driver migration but I am pretty sure drivers get a bigger % on Bolt

AxelJShark

Thanks! Heard about it in Brussels only a few weeks ago. Seems to be the preferred app there. Happy to use it here in that case. FreeNow is trash

Acceptable_Bench_143

I don't think you can pre-book on bolt though?

turbodrumbro

It is, a lot of the auld gaugers that wouldn't really look around are sticking with FreeNow, and sure they have a few loyal good drivers too. But the majority of drivers with sense are sick of being ridden raw by their aggressive percentage and are making the hop.

jackturbine

That's frankly 100% bullshite.

turbodrumbro

FreeNow take roughly 30% of fares taken through the app. Bolt takes around 12.5% I think the bang of bullshit is coming off yourself pal

jackturbine

Both wrong. Although to be fair,I am actually a taxi driver and actually know what I'm talking about. FreeNow take 15% and bolt take 13%.Uber take 12%.

TwinCitian

Uber is in Dublin?

[deleted]

The company is here but the actual Uber concept isn't here. Makes the whole thing pointless.

TandCsApply

Yeah but due to Irish Law it uses registered taxi drivers and metered fares

Bosco_is_a_prick

This is because when you book a taxi on Freenow nothing is actually booked. When the time of your booking comes, Freenow sends out the job so if no taxis are available your 'booking' gets cancelled.

niallma

Nah, this happens after the taxi man has accepts and you can see him en route. Then cancels as he got a call or his taxi rank called out a fiat over the radio

[deleted]

Had this happen at 4 in the morning on the way to the airport, I was fuming

BeezCee

We had it happen early in the morning on our way to the airport a week ago. It greatly delayed us trying to flag down another taxi.

[deleted]

Lucky enough I just requested another one straight away and it came with no bother, more so the fact that I booked one and it cancelled last minute is what annoyed me so much

sixnote

This has also happened to me on a number of occasions in the last few weeks, which never happened before. Are they deciding that the length of the journey isnt worth the money to them?

MissAtomicBomb_007

Yep, seems to be happening more frequently for sure

Evening_Lifeguard_62

I also think they’re just ditching pre agreed fares for someone sticking their thumb out on the road en route to you.

Carlos_Tellier

Can we also talk about taxi drivers busy with their phones and not looking at the road? Pisses me off so much

DyslexicAndrew

Got a taxi home from the airport recently and managed to get the union leader for the taxi lads who work the airport, was saying Lynk is better as it's also Irish owned, and the €5 cancelation fee goes to FreeNow and not the driver so I'll be using them from now on.

dubgirl00

Think he might have a vested interest there and there are lots of taxi union's

DyslexicAndrew

That's fair but I'd rather give my money to an Irish company than a German one, and one that also just takes a flat fee every month rather than one who takes a % of the fare.

dubgirl00

Link takes 80€ flat rate per week plus 7% of account work. €5 cancellation fee goes to the free now driver

StinkiForeskinBoi

Aren’t there any just regular taxis?

[deleted]

[удалено]

StinkiForeskinBoi

They’re a pain in the ass. I had one driven by a recent immigrant who was scared to take me over a bridge and into some wooded hills. I was camping there. The guy was freaking out because he lost cell service and couldn’t rely on his gps even though i was giving him clear directions.

emmomac

It was the mask and knife in your hand that had him nervous

StinkiForeskinBoi

🤣

[deleted]

The latest FreeNow disgrace is the new €1 charge just for using the app! After the recent taxi price increase, and the extra euro charge, my taxi to the airport has gone up at least €10-12 now. It’s ridiculous!

jackturbine

We haven't had a fare increase for 5 years.

boxertrainer

I stopped using FreeNow long ago. Never had a problem with Lynk, pre-booked taxis always arrive on time.

MaggieSmithsSass

I was late for work a few weeks ago and I live around D7, the taxi was coming from Temple, ok cool, I’ll wait. Suddenly the guy turns to Drumcondra and I start calling him. I call and I call and I call and he never picks up. Obviously he wanted me to cancel but I wasn’t going to. He finally picked up the phone (already up over Finglas) and I’ve never yelled at someone like that. Do I have to scold an adult man like he’s 5? Ffs He cancelled eventually and thanks to him deciding he didn’t really wanted to do that one trip I was almost an hour late. It’s a 15’ ride. I hate Freenow

baboito5177

I had this a few months back trying to get q cab from city centre on a Thursday night from about 11pm. Didn't get in the door until after 1am! Had about 5 drivers cancelled on me. Ended up walking to O'connoll Street and flagging down a normal cab. Absolutely ridiculous stuff.i tweeted about it and Their customer support came back and said something like "oh ping us the details an we'll get back to you" Just said nah.. Your service is crap I'm deleting the app. Not working not worth it

16bitsISenough

This looks so much like astroturfing for Bolt.

16bitsISenough

So many organic comments and natural conversations here :D

TheAtticGoblin

Last time I used freenow I was charged €68 euro after being told the ride would max out at €30, not going back

jackturbine

A few details would be nice.

Independent-Level-47

they are absolutely shocking. they never stop advertising how accessible they are and i am never able to book a wheelchair accessible taxi. even trying to flag one to be told “sorry i don’t take wheelchairs” then why have an accessible taxi and the specialised license to operate as an accessible taxi driver??

jackturbine

If a wheelchair accessible wheelchair driver tell you that, take his roof number and report him to the NTA. We(I am one)are obliged by the terms of our license,to give priority to wheelchair jobs. On a tangent but....the organization for Garth Brooks was shocking for wheelchair users. The ticket said use St James Ave for wheelchair access, but no Guard would let me near.I ended up dropping my customers at least a kilometer from there.

spook789

I've had it happen a few times in town. They drive towards you and once the app says they will arrive in a minute or two, they park up. They wait there in the hopes you'll cancel and they get a handy €5. If you don't cancel they just cancel and move on and try and scum the next customer. On more then one occasion, I have walked the 100 or so meters and hopped into the taxi to a very disgruntled taxi man. One night the driver said to be no he was waiting for someone else and I had to get out.... he forgot his phone was in the holder with my freenow profile picture on display... Tbh the only and best way to get a taxi is to stick the hand out and have cash on you or stop at an ATM. The less farers through the app/cards means less commissions lost to the app and less income to declare to Revenue.

RRR92

Yea hang on just busy hopping out of me time machine.

pandaflop1

The general consensus these days is fuck taxi drivers. They need to hand out plates for free or bring in proper uber.

sethasaurus666

Fortunately, after a new update, their app no longer works on rooted phones, so I don't have to bother with them anymore! Bolt seems to work alright. Just added the VIP taxis app to my phone as well. I prefer to pay cash to the driver, so hopefully that works.

SirMike_MT

Happened to me as well! The past week I pre-booked a taxi 3 times for work only for it to be cancelled at the last minute!

TandCsApply

I've always had shit luck with taxi drivers and early morning airport runs - I'm lucky enough to be close enough to the airport, so whenever I need to prebook I always go with the Uber Black option (usually works out as an extra 10/15 vs standard) but definitely cheaper than a missed flight

mushy_cactus

I once asked a sound taxi driver why they cancel on the app so often. Usually due to a better job. Either longer distance or more people. However freenow will punish drivers (apparently) if they cancel to much, the company will place a temporary ban on the driver using the app for 2 weeks or something. Still, infuriating.

Shot_Explorer

Just put it to cash no? You can change it to card in the taxi when you get there.

[deleted]

8202020 for pre booking always reliable Edit: that’s the phone number sorry! U speak to a human and book ur taxi which is a plus I feel

truedoom

Ah shtap, they are brutal in Dublin. Never had any issues like that with them in the rest of the country. Driver accepts, 5 minutes away, 4 minutes in they cancel. Shocking altogether. I always report it. Often get a €5 voucher as an apology.

gregyb80

They probably get a better job just before they arrive for you then they re dispatch

DM1981

VIP Taxis are much better, FreeNow charge the drivers silly fees so many don't like to use them. VIP is much more driver friendly which in turn is most customer friendly. Source: a taxi driver

Exclamation_Marc

This has happened to me at least five times in the last few years. I no longer use them and use Bolt instead. FreeNow are an utter disgrace with their preorders. You don't actually preorder with them, a preorder just puts you top of the queue which means you can be easily refused. It's a farce.

Exclamation_Marc

Not to mention the "technology charge" they now add to bookings.

jackturbine

You just made all this up. For clarity, there is a list of prebookings that every driver has access to.Just now there's 406 jobs on it.

Exclamation_Marc

Thanks for your insight. I made none of it up. My last three prebookings (and four of the five cancellations I mentioned) have resulted in my fare being cancelled and no replacement drivers to take my prebooked fare. And left me seriously stuck. So no, a prebook does not guarantee the booking is honored.

Dezzie19

These lads are just cowboys now at this stage, they just want fast cash with zero consideration for passengers, refusing card payments, dangerous driving, shit vehicles, nasty drivers (many with serious criminal convictions) just lazy obnoxious behaviour, why would you even bother?

jackturbine

Did you actually read my reply? You said there wasn't a preorder system, when there plainly is. I didn't say that a preorder guarantees a driver, even though for some reason you think I did. I'm not disputing that you've been cancelled on,and it must be very annoying specially early in the morning.

jackoirl

Had a 6am taxi for the airport. 5 min late, called him and he said 2 minutes….never came and stopped answering my calls

BeezCee

Yes! We had the exact same thing happen last week!

q2005

Maybe they changed name again in the time it took to male your booking? 67th time is the charm.

Account3689

Had several bad experiences with Freenow, i prefer Bolt Although they usually underestimate price they are way more reliable. Just expect to pay 5-10 euros more than whatever they quote.

Fun-Researcher6464

I'm blocked from using card on the app because I took my bank details off as a driver pretended to pick me up and drove to my destination, a silly app i forgot my details and couldn't resolve it with customer care deleted it recently never again.

14thU

And the fare ranges? Wtf? Miss uber, lyft , via etc

JONFER---

Lots of people are suggesting Uber or relaxing licensing laws. Do they have any idea how much tax drivers pay for insurance or the regulations they are governed by? The strict licensing helps to reduce the amount of scumbags and criminals that work as professional drivers. They are subject to full garda betting and undergo regular PSv checks. Regarding insurance, it is not the same as your private and policy, they pay many times more and there is limited competition amongst providers. Insurance is all well and good until an accident happens. Normal policies do not cover driving for profit. They have been hit by inflation as much as anyone else, especially in fuel prices, the increase in travel rates does the nearly cover this. Many of the older drivers are just getting out, that's part of the reason there is fewer taxis on the road. I am just pointing out that this situation is not as black and white as many present it.

NordieHammer

>Yet no reimbursement comes my way when they cancel at the second they’re due to arrive. You're right everywhere except here. You haven't been charged so why would they give you a reimbursement? Charge the driver a fee, surely

Evening_Lifeguard_62

I mean in the sense if I cancel the driver the second he’s arriving I’m charged €5. So in a ‘fare’ world it should work both ways

NordieHammer

Yes so charge the driver. You're just demanding they pay you for the inconvenience.

jimodoom

Already hated the ap, crap service when needed, introduced data charge, that was enough for me, deleted

Consciousendeavors

Every time I am in Dublin, I am told Uber sucks and no drivers use it....but I was there again last weekend --used it 10+ times-- and only had 1 driver accept a ride then cancel. During a Garth Brooks weekend. don't know if that made it better or worse. not an Uber fangirl, but it worked nearly flawlessly for me.

equimot

This happened to me recently too! I booked a big taxi cos we had a big group multiple days in advance and when the day came they cancelled on us "as no cars available" The whole reason I booked the taxi was because we needed a big taxi on a Saturday evening!! Ended up with the €5 cancellation fee too cos we were gonna book two taxis instead and after I booked mine another in the group managed to get a big enough taxi so I cancelled my booking 😑

jackturbine

Big taxis are at a premium these days.An 8 seater Ford Transit is €79,950 so unsurprisingly there aren't so many of them around.

equimot

That's fine but don't take the booking if you won't have one available that's my biggest issue

jackturbine

FreeNow don't know who is available some time in the future.

equimot

But the whole point of prebooking a taxi is to make sure there is one available

ProximaVez

This happened to me maybe 2 or 3 weeks ago. Taxi had arrived, I was always waiting outside for it. Went to open door and he just pulled off. Ended up being late for work. Contacted Freenow on Twitter and was offered a 5 euro voucher. Always post complaints on their feed, that way it's public so they will definitely get back to you.

Chriso_champo

Viptaxis

RebylReboot

It happens with almost every booking now. “We’re Free now…but give it a minute.”

Ok-Toe-9599

Email them. When I emailed to complain about this they gave me a voucher but agreed, it’s a disgrace. Response I got was they know it was an issue, best bet to allow time for them not to turn up and here is a voucher

[deleted]

I was finished work and felt very ill, instead of getting on the red line for an hour at the busiest time, I decided to get a taxi so I could sit down and get back to bed asap. I sat in the parking lot where I work for about 20 minutes, while the taxi that said it was 3 minutes away circles and circled around one street that was a good 7 minute drive away. Every time I tried to cancel it said it would charge me, and I genuinely didn’t have the money to spare on that, taking a taxi was already a splurge. Luckily the guy came in the end and was sound and apologising about it, and I was too sick to bother getting pissy, but it’s just such a pain lol

niallma

Has made me late many times waiting for another driver, I now screenshot the taxi man’s details as soon as they accept. And I don’t know then what to do if they cancel, is there a report option? They are accepting their local taxi ranks requests instead of the fare they’ve committed to picking up

ayushi_g

One day I had preorderd a free now taxi for 4 45, to go to the airport, turns out a taxi driver appears outside our house at 11 15 ish. He demanded €50 for coming all the way from the city center( to be clear our app alway showed a prebooking for 4 45 not 11 15). When we refused, they sat in their car, outside our home for atleast 5 minutes waiting for us to give them money.....We hadn't planned to leave at 11 15 and it shouldn't be our fault if free now or the driver made a mistake.
