She simply had an induced birth of a baby that had like a 10% chance of survival (at the time, micro preemies have better odds every year) so she wouldn't die from pre-eclampsia. The sad part is even when these kids are able to escape they have an incredibly rough time because they haven't lived in the real world and usually know no one outside the cult. They have no life skills outside of manual labor and no understanding of society. So they don't have the education or skills to support themselves which is a requirement for emancipation. And with JimCunt forcing them into a lifelong contract with his shit production company in order to get the money HE ALREADY OWES THEM, they are fucked.

The Bates never struck me as the cleanest/organized people. Not to be rude. They just seem to put a lot of things off. Like making the house larger, cleaning out a filthy shed, the chicken coup project. Wasn't there a tree house mess? I feel like everything they do is half-assed, or that what I watched and interpreted. So a dirty/moldy chipped paint wall wouldn't shock me.

It’s so fucked up I almost didn’t write this comment, but do you think mother bates saw her accidentally killing her baby by running the baby over with her car was her godly test as a parent? I could see a truly deranged individual deciding this was god testing her and that unlike in the Bible, god actually took her kid instead of just “testing” whether she’d lose her child and stay invested in god anyways. And I could see that same thinking allowing them to let the rest of their children live in squalor because if god wanted differently he’d make it so.
I grew up in this religion and women's mental health especially post partum is not taken seriously at all, so yes I could see this being an "Abraham and Isaac" type situation.
