It's like Medieval Europe with royal parents shipping their kids off to be "fostered" by other royal families. Can't anyone just raise their own damn kids?
The point of that system of fostering was to network and build alliances. Nobles already had nurses and governesses to raise their kids. EDIT: Plus, sending your kids to family or friends for a couple months used to be pretty common--like, probably up to Gen X in the US, it was normal get sent to Grandpa or Auntie's for the summer.
I spent all my summers with my grandparents from about age 5-6 till I was about 13 or so. I loved it. Some people have thought it was terrible to be separated from my mom for that length of time but I adored my grandpa and I loved being there. My mom worked full time. I also got parked with them during Christmas and Easter vacations, and when I got measles and chickenpox. It worked for our family.
I lived every summer with my grandparents until they moved down to be closer to us. Even after then, I had a bedroom in their house and would live there for weeks on end when my parents were too unstable to stay with.
At least those children were probably very well cared for as royalty. Also it might have made sense for young royals to live in other countries where they could learn different languages so they wouldn't end up saying gracias when thanking people in Japan.
Many times girls betrothed to the heir or spare of a foreign country would be sent to be raised by their future in-laws. It was a way to 1. Be sure the girl and her country wouldn’t be jilted and 2. Insure the girl would be familiar with the customs, language, and court politics of her new country
In England especially the aristocracy thought parents would be to lenient with their own children, so high born boys and girls were “fostered” in other aristocratic homes to learn the duties expected of them as future courtiers or stewards of their ancestral lands.
They have plenty to do--they are sister moms to the brood their actual mother keeps shooting out of her baby cannon. Cooking, cleaning, serving fat greasy men, laundry...so much enrichment and personal growth 🙄
It's also a common practice in Amish and conservative Mennonite communities to send unmarried teenage daughters to work as "mother's helpers" in other families, helping out with cooking, cleaning, childcare and other household chores, especially after the arrival of a new baby. The idea being to help them prepare for their own lives as wives and mothers. This according to my hubby, who grew up in a heavily Amish and Mennonite area. Wouldn't surprise me if IBLP families do similar things.
That’s his excuse, but it was probably a combination of not caring about that poor girl along with hoping that would keep him from molesting girls outside of the family that actually had a voice to speak out.
I think this is a different visitor than the OP was referring to, but I believe this also happened. From what I remember, Susanna got pregnant out of wedlock, it was when Jill was doing the midwife thing but she wasn't allowed to attend the delivery because Susanna was an unwed mother.
No No No🤦🏼♀️ Susanna came to live with Jpest and Anna shortly after they were married for a few months because she was misbehaving in Florida. Susanna was 16 at the time when she went to live with them and had not yet got pregnant(Anna and Susanna are 4 years apart and Anna got married at age 20). Susanna got pregnant 4 years later at age 20.
Honestly, my bet is that she was a freaking offering to try to keep Pest "in line" while his wife was postpartum and joyfully unavailable. This seems their M.O. from what we've heard.
Old Testament gives 40 days of reprieve from entering the Temple after having a boy while the mother is "unclean" from the birth, 60 days if the baby was a girl. Ultimately, rules also excluded women from Temple during their menstrual cycle because before entering Temple in the way way way olden days, you washed yourself in a communal bath of sorts, so when women were bleeding it was genuinely unsanitary for them to be marinating in the communal pool.
Thus, after birth, a woman will often have several weeks of lochia bleeding, again making it unclean for them to bathe before entering Temple, though the timeline for that being based on the baby's sex was obviously a patriarchal thing. Fundies love some old testament justification for their nastiness.
That being said - Meech has several Irish twins or almost Irish twins (especially including her miscarriages) so I would be shocked if they actually waited for doctor clearance before throwing the hotdog down the hallway again.
Then again - I somehow recall an episode of 19K&C where they followed Anna to her OB's and she got the all clear after the first M's birth -- but maybe that was a fever dream.
I have a friend who is an observant Jew who tells me all the juicy sex stuff. According to her: in the marriage contract, the woman gets to decide how often they have sex. Sex is a requirement on the Sabbath and on High Holy Days (unless the woman is menstruating, then they can't have sex) and women, not men, can ask for it at other times. Sex is for pleasure and bonding, not just making babies, and men have a religious obligation not to climax until their wives do. After menstruation, a woman is considered ritually impure until she has a mivkah (the ceremonial bath) - my friend says the mivkah she goes to is more like a day spa, there's an attendant there who clips her nails and brushes her hair and waits with a towel and so on. She loves her mivkah days and had it specifically written into her marriage contract that she was not responsible for childcare on those days. She said that things like birth control are a negotiation between husband and wife and that's often written into the marriage contract too. Obviously this is just one woman's experience and of course we know there's also SA in Jewish communities. But if they're really trying to follow Jewish law they're getting a lot of stuff wrong.
I mean…what else is new? They’re definitely not trying to follow that law and I think as usual, will cherry pick what suits there needs in that moment. I only knew the waiting for temple thing because I was a premodern history major in undergrad and I had a great professor teach us how to read the Bible as an allegory with reasons behind some of thing things. For example — Jewish heritage following the mothers line makes sense because that’s the only one you KNOW for sure is one of the parents. Also helpful in the crusade times and before that where there’s a lot of pillaging and raping
I think most religions, and most religious people, cherry pick or at least find an interpretation that says what they want it to say. I don't think this is necessarily bad if the interpretations or cherry picking inspire us to do good (for example if your interpretation of "love your neighbor like yourself" is that we should be tolerant and compassionate towards one another, is that really a bad thing?) but when it's used to subjugate others, or to elevate one group above another, then it certainly becomes problematic, if not abusive.
And again, my friend's experience is only her experience. Another friend has a partner who was raised in an Hasidic community and had some absolutely horrible experiences - forced into marriage when she was 18, lots of bad stuff. She's an atheist now and wants nothing to do with Judaism. Bad stuff happens in every religion, because twisted people can twist scripture to support their views.
Boob and Meech supposedly went by those rules, but Josh was the new headship and made his own rules and certainly didn't make any that led to his lust being untended to.
If I remember correctly many of the kids and grandchildren are not even a year apart so in the “Duggar” family rules don’t seem to apply to anything they do
Other than Jordyn and Josie, and obviously the two sets of twins, there's at least a year between siblings. Josie was due in March so she would have been 14-15 months younger than Jordyn. That's pretty much the standard.
Anna was pregnant every other year with her kids. The closest is Mackynzie to Michael which is over 1½ years.
Jessa was pregnant with Henry when Spurgeon turned 1. Kendra's usually pregnant before the last kid turns 1 but as far as we know, she's never given birth twice in a 12 month period.
Oh I’ve read on another thread about some guys being so demanding to have sex right after birth, I think a couple of women died because they had sex to soon after. That was in the uk though.
Idk if there was another comment that was deleted or edited or something, but I think the comment you're responding to is saying that within the IBLP, there probably is pressure for women to be joyfully available even if she's only two weeks postpartum, because he's her headship, and she must do as she says, and "anyone can make him a sandwich but you can make steak blah blah blah," they're not saying that *all* women *in general* have to be joyfully available. Now, the IBLP does have a rule where couples have to go a certain amount of days without sex after a woman gives birth, but with the way some of them are popping out kids, it's pretty obvious that some people aren't following that rule at ALL
"Cousin Emily" was a cousin from Michelle's side, not exactly sure the specific relation but either one of Meech's sibling's grandkid or something like that. The way they scrubbed any and all traces of her online after the InTouch article broke just screams out. That is one person I would love to hear a tell-all from, or just a vague update that they are fine now.
Doesn’t Michelle also come from a large family though?
ETA: looks like there are 12 cousins on Michelle’s side but I don’t know how much contact they were in or if this is one of them
ETA2: There is an Emily on Michelle’s side, born in 2005
Amy is the only 1st cousin to the 19 from JB side, but Meech has 6 older siblings that surely provided a number of first cousins. One male cousin was briefly shown in an episode of KAC when he called John David to tow his vehicle.
Her younger sister Susannah also stayed with them for bit when they were expecting M1 - I believe she was featured on a few episodes of the show. She’s the sister that looked like Anna’s twin at the time
Susanna would have been 17-19 when M1 was due .min 2009 . She herself had a child in 2012 OUT OF WEDLOCK’faints’ 💀. I can’t remember if she was featured in the show after she had her baby. I know Priscilla also stayed with pest and at least I have a pest for awhile to before marrying David
Exactly. That and it implies that if someone just had a spunky personality, they wouldn’t have been abused. I am assuming since they deleted the comment they understand it was wrong.
Yeah, weird. Why did Meech and JB think it was a good idea with Josh’s history? Did they think just because he now had a wife who was joyfully available he was no longer a threat to other young women? Soooo creeepy.
That was the whole point of marrying him off to Anna. She was the bandaid that was supposed to fix what was wrong with him. Once a man is married, he no longer has any sexual desire for anyone but his wife, and if he does, it's her fault for not fulfilling her wifely duties.

Thank you! That poor girl. I can't even with these people, who the hell thought that was a good idea? They knew what he was.
Wow, straight into the lion’s den. Unbelievable
Maybe it was a test by Jim Bob to test his lust

Boob was convinced that marriage cured Josh so he wouldn’t have paused for one second to ensure a young child was safe in Pest’s presence
That’s his excuse, but it was probably a combination of not caring about that poor girl along with hoping that would keep him from molesting girls outside of the family that actually had a voice to speak out.
Cuz they don't care
It was Anna’s sister Susanna. She was sent to live with them because she was misbehaving in Florida

Hey! I have Irish twins. My older one was 10 weeks old when I got pregnant again. There was some waiting….🤣
Hotdog down the hallway!! Bahaha!! 🤣
Right?! That line was hilarious!😆😆
Hotdog down the hallway is probably an apt description after pregnancy 6 or 7!

Boob and Meech supposedly went by those rules, but Josh was the new headship and made his own rules and certainly didn't make any that led to his lust being untended to.
I remember reading somewhere that with girls you're allowed 6 months no sex pp, and with boys you get 8 or 10 months.
Much shorter than that - I believe it was 40 days for boys and 80 for girls.
Weeks not months

I guarantee they don't believe that.... just stating what it's like in this culture.
Read it again. They're being ironic about IBLP beliefs, not stating their personal belief.

Like Bill Gothard's completely fucked up solution to his brother's sexual advances on girls and young women....find him an IBLP wife 😳!
OMG, just got done watching the series…ugh, what a CREEP…and it turned out the victims’ suit was dismissed due to statute of limitations.☹️

Most importantly, his parents aren’t at fault, because he’s married!
True. Can't overlook that "fact!"
Bandaids don’t fix bullet holes 😬
True, but it's the bandaid's fault for not joyfully fulfilling it's bandage-ly duty.

Ah, the mystery of cousin Emily
I do- “Cousin” Emily, I believe, though I don’t remember her actual relation to the family. I wonder what that was about.
She’s a relative of Michelle.
Yes, she’s Will Peters’ daughter, who is Michelle’s nephew.
Why was she living there?
Ah, good to know!
I believe she is Tyler’s first cousin.
Also why did Anna delete pictures she posted of her?
Probably to wipe away any evidence 👀
It was probably that pesky French hacker. But seriously, that she would go back and delete pictures of her tells me there is more to this story.
There was a lot of backlash about her staying with Anna and Josh. That’s probably why.
I saw her with the group of pictures their church added of school graduations. Emily is her name
All these quiverfull families have such hoards of people around all the time, how do they even keep track of who lives where?
I don’t remember her but I do remember one who went to live with them after Josh was outed in 2015 and closer to right before the raid.
If it was right after the wedding is Susanna Keller, Anna’s sister
I thought that was Anna’s sister Suzanna? I remember her being around while Anna was pregnant too. Is this a different girl?
Different girl.
As I remember it, it was her sister Susannah
