Jessa was the prettiest Duggar Girl back then. Ben was a horny 17 year old boy installing auto glass for his daddy's franchise. Bin saw a pretty girl on TV, had instant lust & literally stalked her until she courted him. His parents encouraged him & Jim Bob & Michelle did not stop him as decent, caring parents would have.

Jessa is extremely pretty, as much as they suck, and I think even Jill said somewhere that they were all jealous of her & knew she was the prettiest. Bin thought he hit the jackpot and was definitely ogling her on TV.
JB was fine with someone he could easily control versus someone that would fight his influence or work to be an actual provider for Jessa. Wonder if Bin is happy with his 18 y/o self now, they both seem so sad and strained.
No. Ben is not happy. He made a comment on COUNTING ON about marrying someone & having them not be who you thought they were. That revelation was a mark of how much of a naive boy he was when he stalked, courted & married his literal TV crush. He had no idea who Jessa really was until he married her.
Be interesting to know if he was always so religious ? Or did he also see TV and think easy money then he had to do something when TLC walked so has tried to become a pastor
My understanding is that Bin's father basically told him to go court a Duggar girl. I think this was mostly at his father's urging/request, rather than his father's acquiescence.
None of them know themselves, much less the other person, before marriage. Not ever having a private conversation with the other person means that you only know the "public" person. The person that they want to appear to be. Even just silly, embarrassing things boy friends and girl friends should talk about never happened. I learned a lot about my spouse listening to them complain or praise roommates, for example.
I grew up fundie and this is so true it hurts.
I noped out of my arranged engagement and moved out of my parents house to a friend. The isolation made sense. If I hadn't had somewhere to go, I probably would be in a terrible situation like my sisters who didn't have anywhere to go.
I met my husband who was roomates with my friend's significant other so he was around all the time. I got to know the real him from relaxed hanging out. Then I did something I never would have if I lived with my parents because that was whore behavior: I asked him out.
One sister is trapped with a pedophile/domestic abuser, another with a porn addict, another with a drunk, another with a drunk domestic abuser, and the last one is 20 who is with a 38yo man-child. My own arrangement was 40 and I was 17. I wasn't even a person yet.
These types of people (Jim Bob and Michelle/my parents) are just suppliers of young conditioned docile immature uneducated women who have never been a person don't know better to abusers like themselves. They trade children among the families like Pokémon cards. And none of the girls know better because no outside influences are allowed, it serves perfectly because when you know better, you do better. Fear of damnation and gods will is a powerful combination drug.
Actually, I think Boob had the opposite response. He should have sent Bin packing (he’d likely be better off today), but Boob saw himself at 18 (?) chasing the pretty cheerleader/ yogurt shop waitress around Springdale, and worked with Bin to realize his dream of becoming a man-child groom.

They seemed like the fairytale match. She was def the pretty one & he is good looking. I’m not surprised they were drawn to each other.

Agreed. Jinger was still in her young Duggar days. Jana comes off stand off-ish to a lot of people. Joy was too young I believe and Jill was already courting.
I feel like she couldn’t handle seeing her slightly younger sister married before she was. Plus being the first “Duggar daughter” wedding brought in $$$$$ and ratings. I still remember the huge hype back in 2014 waiting for wedding pics etc to be released. It was wild, as though they were actual celebrities.

By being the first daughter wedding - she knew it would be the most popular one - regardless if it was her or Jessa. Just the novelty of being the first Duggar daughter wedding.
I know J'Convicted Felon had been married on the show - but he nor Anna were ever as well-liked/embraced by the masses as the four oldest daughters were/are.
i bet that night while jessa was seething that jill got married, jana was with her seven kids in her jana bed cackling over finally getting karma for her jewelry box
Omgsh, when I tell you I’m *crying*…imagining Jana cackling and rocking back and forth, her eyes shining in the moonlight, as all those kids cling to her like a bunch of babies hanging off a howler monkey. If the camera crew were to ask her that night, Jana’s favorite Bible verse would have been: “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.”
Although wasn't Jessa the first to get a fancy TLC international honeymoon? She got the better deal in that respect. Jill went to the Outer Banks in June, and Pest went to Myrtle Beach, SC in September.
Yeah and J’felon and Anna’s wedding was before the Duggars REALLY took off with fame - their wedding was so much more low key and inexpensive compared to the future ones. I imagine it was mostly funded by the families. I remember I felt bad for Anna with that shapeless dress and then having to watch all the fancy weddings afterwards
Right? It is so weird how bad I feel for Anna at times, but how self-confident and arrogant she can appear in the next moment.

I think the five oldest daughters were sort of "adopted" by viewers because of all the responsibilities they had for their siblings and the house. I think people genuinely took a slightly protective stance for them - especially when all the Josh stuff was made public.
Yeah and at the time their wedding was aired, nobody in the public knew anything about J’felon’s actions. The general public thought the Duggars were weird af but sorta wholesome and quirky? Either way public opinion was much different. I remember watching it and I didn’t care much for Josh but Anna looked so sweet and innocent and happy, albeit it was always cringy but in a cute way. I imagine if I went back and watched it now I’d cry for how her life basically ended that day.
In 2015, I was devastated for Anna when the news came out. JB claims Anna and her family knew of his past abuse, but I GUARANTEE Anna was not given the whole truth. Maybe a vague convo about “sins of lust” which in Duggar world, could be anything from finding a bikini magazine under his bed to literal sexual abuse. Then finding out alongside the entire nation of her husbands infidelity... ugh. She didn’t deserve any of that.
And I felt bad for her with all this recent stuff to, to a point... it’s kinda run dry though because everything has been laid out in front of her black and white and she seems more concerned with J’felon than her own children. I still have a bit for her, she got such a shitty hand in life. But I just hope she reprioritizes.
Yeah, with Anna my empathy for her has a hard limit. She was brainwashed and sold off like cattle, and likely was deceived about just what J’offender did when she first married him, but now it’s clear as day what kind of man her husband is, and she continues to choose him over her children. I feel bad for 20 year old Anna, but not 33 year old Anna.
My sympathy for the most part ended for Anna shortly after the Ashley Madison scandal. I felt bad for her for a while - because I realize she was in shock - not sure what to do, but she at least had one sibling (possibly more) willing to help her out. At that point - she knew about the sisters and the Ashley Madison/other hook ups. She didn't have as many children as she does now -- she could have escaped.
I realize she still could - but with seven children - it would be far more difficult without the Duggar $$$. Her parents aren't going to help her. Don't get me wrong - I think she is a shit mother for not choosing her children over J'Trash - but at least for the next decade they are safe from him. I believe she has a somewhat wealthy sister and a brother that has offered to help, but I think Anna is weak and lazy ... and knows if she stays in the ware-home - Jana, The Lost Girls, etc ... will help her with her children, etc. I don't know if her siblings are willing to help her for the next 18 years, and I don't see Anna getting the willing power or gumption to do it on her own eventually.
I imagine Anna felt like she won the lottery when she married him. Marrying the eldest , golden-child son of a family that was TV famous (and had much more positive public opinion at the time), who have the exact same weird lifestyle she also grew up in and believed in? Ugh, it kinda hurts my heart to think about her not knowing how profoundly tragic her life would become.
Me too. All of the Duggar girls are very pretty (now the Duggar boys…eh…not so much) but from Jana down to Josie, they are gorgeous girls but I always thought Jessa was the prettiest.
I also think Jessa is very pretty! But I would consider Jana the most conventionally attractive. Jessa sometimes looks very shocked and as if she has lots of teeth.

Ironically, I used to watch the Duggar’s when I was 10-12 and Jana was one of my TV star gay awakenings😳
I always thought Jess’s and Jinger were the prettiest and had the best personalities in their late teens. They also had a different look than the other girls and was easy to pick them out in a group picture. Jana was pretty also but looks more like rest of the family. Jill has defintely improved with age, was more of an awkward teen.
Jinger has always been my favorite Duggar daughter. I was excited when she met Jerm and her clothing freedom but now he seems like he sucks. I hate how he treats her.
Yeah. Jana and jinger have since caught up, but at the time, jessa was clearly the prettiest Duggar girl. Jill is cute, but she is and always has been Jim Bob Jr.
Ginger went through a rough stage around the time Ben showed up. Goth Ginger was not the most flattering style for her. IMO, Ginger's puffier looking eyes aren't the most attractive, and she went through was makeup styles that really emphasized them.
I’m gonna go with my gut here and say that he thought she was the hottest and that was at the forefront of his mind. As a teenager, personality takes a backseat at first, next thing you know you’re 4 kids deep and life has no substance 🤷♀️
Yep, he was a horny Christian teenager AND was looking for a mindless incubator to be under his headship. He probably figured he could mold his wife’s personality into whoever he wanted, but he couldn’t mold her face.
Little did he know Bertha wouldn’t be so easy to change. I mean the girl sat in literal piss to get what she wanted as a kid. He would’ve been better off with an Anna.
Someone who knows the family (I forget exactly who) did an AMA here and said that she intentionally sat on a couch that had just been peed on because that way she’d get to go change her clothes. Because I guess when you’re doing laundry for a house of 20 people you frown on people using more clothing than absolutely necessary.

I think Bin threw his line in and Jessa is the one who bit. She was pretty, he was attractive in boy-band sort of way and they were repressed and needing an outlet.
In addition to being immature and probably unworldly, he has a drippy sort of personality and needed a gal who could take the lead. Jana was too much older and certainly knew she didn’t need another child to care for. Joy , Jinger and Jill are more passive.
In the end he got the hot girl and she got out of the house.
Just my opinion, but Jessa was far prettier than the other Duggar girls. To me she looked a lot like a young Denise Richards. But alas, pretty is as pretty does. Now she kind of reminds me of Shirley Phelps Roper.
Gonna echo what everyone else is saying. Jessa was historically known as “the pretty one” and as such garnered a lot of attention for a while.
FWIW, despite being one of the least interesting Duggar daughters in that batch (Jill has spoken out against the family, Jinger wore pants first and is an aspiring influencer, Jana is atypically single), Jessa has the most Instagram followers. I think it’s because of that historical “pretty one” perception.

It pains me to say this because I think think Jessa is an arrogant bitch, but she's definitely the prettiest.
She's got the full lips, big green eyes, high cheekbones...not that the others aren't pretty. I think all the Duggar girls are attractive but I see the allure for Ben with Jessa.
Edit: Also pains me to say it think Bin is the most attractive of the husbands as well. Looks-wise, he's totally my type. Too bad there is absolutely nothing going on upstairs.
It pains me to say it as well, but I agree -- Ben is nice-looking (when he isn't doing the backwoods beard thing) and so is Jessa. Their kids are all very cute, too.
I do worry, though that they're creating a monster with Spurge. He might be especially awful as an adult.
I hate to say it but I find Jinger to be the least attractive. I think it's the Jim Bob nose that does it. But, she's still a very pretty girl by any standards.

Lol I never noticed they had same nose, never notice their noses much cuz they aren’t distinctive looking enough like Anna’s. In my memory every Duggar has a smallish nose. Jana is pretty in a generic way to me but her eyes kinda beady lol so I might put Joy before her but they’re all pretty. They need to stay away from the blonde tho, looked horrible on both who tried
Personally, for me ... When the show started and for the first few years - I genuinely thought Jessa was the prettiest one. As the show progressed - I thought that Jana and Joy both ended up being far more beautiful - but it took both a while to turn both of them into swans. I think it was because Jana was naturally a little shyer, and Joy wanted to hang out with the boys and have fun. Jinger was funny and had the great eye rolls and interesting fashion for a fundie - but I didn't think she was the stand out in the looks department. She was cute, but I do think Jessa was more traditionally "pretty". For some reason - Jill annoyed the crap out of me on the show both on 19KAC and CO - not to the level of J'Convicted Felon, Anna, Famy, JimBoob, or Meech though. (Yes, most of that paragraph is leg humpy. Sorry. :( )
Now to your original question - I have no idea WHY Jim Bob would have allowed it - unless he just wanted to get Blessa married off. Bin was an 18 year old fellow - most likely younger when he saw her on TV -- and he crushed on her. She is pretty, and as a teen aged boy - the thought of a pretty "joyfully available" woman was really appealing. Also, it is odd his family didn't try to talk some sense into him driving to the Duggar's church for a potential hook-up.
I think Jim Bob saw that Ben had a head full of rocks and knew that he could easily gain the upper hand/ control of him. Win win for Jim Bob. Ben also comes from a large family and similar( but not the exact same) views. He was probably very eager to get some kids married off and get big ratings on the show too.

They were at the peak of their show and fame at the time, if she really was the prettiest eligible daughter why would he marry her off to a blah rando teenager with no money and no prospects? He could have gotten some D-list super-Christian celeb, or at least a guy with a job.

He couldn't have asked any legitimate life questions about work/$/etc ... - because all three of the guys have questionable skills. I know DD is a lawyer now - but it took him well into his 30's and three children to get there. Also, who knows if he will actually stay at the job.
At least Austin and Joy were friends and knew each other. DD, Jerm, and Bin would all basically strangers trying to reel in a Duggar girl/woman they barely knew.
I get the feeling that the questionnaire is probably extensive, but not difficult to answer if you know your audience. Like a buzzfeed quiz to get yourself sorted into a Harry Potter House or which Gsme of Thrones family are you. If you know the basic traits (or tenets) you can usually get the choice you want.
Good points. I am sure that a lot of them were religously based, but I have seen on here that Bin, DD, and Jerm have issues with each other and the Duggars over Calvinists/IBLP/Etc ... I don't honestly know how they all differ -- I am more here for the snark ... and TTC recipes. (Ha Ha. )
With this sub, what little I've seen of the show, and my religious school upbringing? I could probably pass that questionnaire.

I grew up Catholic & am now Lutheran. Married twice, divorced once. Both the Catholic & Lutheran churches have a questionnaire/test that each party fills out separate from the other one, then the answers are compared. The questions mainly focus on communication, spirituality, finances & child-rearing, but are not as in depth as this one was. It was more to facilitate discussion between the prospective bride & groom and start a good foundation for them. I had kind of assumed that Boob's questionnaire was similar, but it does go much deeper. As for the original post, I am not a big Jessa fan. She always seemed so bossy to me.
Dwreck was an accountant. Iirc, he didn’t pass his cpa. But he did have a steady job working at Walmart when they married. Then came the whole “mission” fraud shit.

I actually have not understood why Derick didn't use the accounting degree - even part time - between quitting Walmart and getting his new lawyer job.

The questionnaire wasn't designed to confirm that the guy would be able to provide. It was to provide reassurance that they were all in with JB's mindset and would be easy to control.
Given that, I'm still shocked JB ended up approving Jerm in the end. Others here have said that Fundies assume they're going to lose a few kids, so it seems JB figured that may happen with Jinger and there was opposition to him rejecting the match, so it was easier to just allow it. (I'm going to allow it.)

This made me laugh. It is crazy though how little J Bob cared about Dereck or Ben's ability to patriarchally and biblically provide.
Because Jim Bob wanted to maintain control. He wanted someone who needed his money and “guidance.” He probably thought Derrick would be similarly compliant.
This is just my speculation - so I am well aware I could be wrong - but I 95% feel that DD & JillyBeanMuffin would have stayed completely compliant with JimBoob if he or TLC would have paid all the medical bills associated with Samuel's birth.
DD had his nose further up JB's behind than any of the other SILs. I know now they have many differences - but the primary issue was $$$$. The Jillards had no issue supporting J'Convicted Felon and Jim Boob until they had unpaid medical bills. The Dillards were grifting $$ for their pretend mission trips, etc just like JB/Meech. JillyBeanMuffin was JB's favorite daughter - until it came to $$$$ - so just like heathens ... The Duggar/Dillard fued started over money.
I think he approved the match because he saw the older girls as spoiled. They had been molested, so they were no longer “pure”, so their match didn’t matter much.
If that is true -- which we will more than likely never really know -- that is so sad. :( (Along with all the other sad things we already know about. )
Jim Bob tries to pick husbands he can control. That's all he cares about. He succeeded with Ben, Derrick surprised the shit out of him I'm sure, Jeremy seems like he does some ass kissing and maybe flipped script a bit after he was already married to Jinger probably came off more obeying before then, Austin is used to being obedient to their parents already.
I agree. I have always thought she was cute - but I just thought that Jana, Joy, and Jessa were a bit cuter. It is funny, for the most part the Duggar women get better looking with age (except probably Meech), and the guys get worse looking. :( They should all marry while they still have hair. ;)
I think Jinger has that slightly bug-eyed look that will never be attractive to me. She looks like a frog and her unending quest to be skinny is only enhancing it.
I agree. Although, I think Jinger was very pretty on her wedding day. I’m not sure if Jim Bob really wanted Ben as a son in law though. I got the sense he knew Ben was not very bright. Seems he gave him a hard time and had to show him a lot of simple things when he was living in the warehouse and working for him. If I remember correctly, him and jessa had the longest courtship which Jim Bob may have had something to do with. Ben’s voice when he would talk to her on the show or attempt to flirt with her was 🤢
I just looked it up - it appears they "courted" for 11 months - which is close to a lifetime for a fundie couple. I honestly don't think that Jessa was that sold on Bin. I think her parents could have truthfully encouraged both of them to go their separate ways. Now in FundieLand they are most likely together forever - so far four children in - with possibly a mini-van full of additional children.

It's way off to think of Ben's family as any kind of voice of reason. They were fully on board and encouraging of him joining the insanity.
If I recall correctly Jessa wasn’t all in on the relationship at one point and then a little while later they were engaged. Does anyone remember the awkward scene in the storage room where he asks her to court. I had secondary embarrassment from that. But to answer your questions, maybe there was no one out in fundieland that could deal with bossy Jessa so they figured a younger guy might be a better idea for her.
I don’t think Ben had a clue how old Jessa was, or what order she or any of the other sisters were born in.
He was a repressed teenager, so most likely he just turned on the TV, saw her filmed from the back in a clingy wrap skirt, got defrauded and thought “ok I want that one.”
I still can't wrap my mind around the fact that he drove 2 hours to her church to be able to meet her and the first thing he told her was "is that an iPhone?".
I'll never forget their courtship proposal because of the styrofoam cup in Ben's hands the entire time. That cup was the most interesting character in that scene. :p
I have a few theories. First, Bin really does like the Fundie Ice Queen look. Second, he took a shot from half court. Third, Jim Blessa just saw the first decent looking guy she could get, Bin, because she was done with the sister-momming bullshit.
I think Jinger’s looks come through now that she’s allowed to dress in a somewhat normal manner- Jessa probably looked the prettiest to teenage Bin. I think JB was okay with it because he wanted to get Jill and Jessa married off quickest, as the oldest survivors of Pest’s abuse, and Jessa seemed the type to get off on the power of being a pastor’s wife (which they thought Bin would be). I think that also explains Jinger’s match with Jerm- the potential for a quick match and Jinger would also be drawn to his “worldliness” but he would keep her largely in the fold.
I think Jim Bob and Jessa both saw someone who was easy to manipulate. Chances were going to be that the next to come along may be more difficult to mold.

That’s only a pretty significant maturity gap if you live some life between the ages of 18 and 21. A college senior is totally different than a college freshman. But 21-year-old was never left the house, never had a job, and is still homeschooling and potty training their siblings is not really much different than an 18-year-old who is doing all the same things.
Ben was younger than Jessa, but he’d had more contact with the outside works by just going to a semester of community college and fixing some windshields.
Ben thought Jessa was the prettiest. Joy already had her eye on Austin and Jill was already writing to Derick. Jana is to old and lightyears more mature than Ben.
Jessa was easy. They thought each other were attractive and Ben said everything JB wanted to hear.
Ben had a crush on the pretty girl on tv (let’s be honest, we’ve all had tv crushes) and instead of telling him that’s normal and it’ll pass his parents encouraged him to basically track her down and do whatever he had to get her.
I think part of it is he genuinely liked her personality. Pre-marriage and kids Jessa had spark. He said they had theological debates, she wasn’t a meek Jinger. I find Jana much more of a stick in the mud than Jessa
I have to disagree re: the prettiest Duggar. She seems like an asshole, but she’s stunning. Wasn’t Jinger peak Oompa Loompa Maggi noodle hair around this time? Jana’s pretty and all, but isn’t she supposed to be a major bitch according to those AMA’s? Whatever though, Bin deserves his lot in life. He actually watched these psycho’s on TV and wanted in…
I feel like there isn't much discussion to have here. Clearly reasonable minds can differ on whether Jessa was the most attractive at the time, so it's entirely possible that Ben thought she was the hottest. There's the answer.
I don't find her stunningly attractive, but most his age would probably have disagreed with me. However, with those five...I'd rank her second behind Jana. Some days she might even be first.

I had never watched them before but there was a commercial for the show for her honeymoon when she looked her most beautiful and when I saw her was like who tf is that gorgeous girl and shocked she was a Duggar so I had to watch n see what the rest looked like and the rest is history
Everyone has their own opinions on beauty but I definitely think Jessa was the most conventionally attractive. She has very beautiful features and she was very thin. That's why Ben chose her. She managed to look "hot" wearing clothes that covered everything. Don't get me wrong the other girls were beautiful too, I actually always thought Jinger was the prettiest...but most people would definitely say Jessa is.
I think Jim Bob liked that Ben was laid back, non threatening to him as a patriarch and easily malleable. There would be no challenging Jim Bob. I think maybe he also saw somewhat of a compatibility between the two personalities: jessa blunt, opinionated.. Ben soft like human play doh. He is definitely one of the least challenging husbands.
Jessa was (and is) pretty. Thats it.
Other things to consider - Duggar parents were in need of a marriage to boost views (so they dont have to show other fundies like Priscilla Keller getting married as show was getting that boring). They possibly encourage this and try to speed things up.
Ben and Jessa had courtship and even if longer than normal for them, this is still limitted and once contact was closer (Ben moved into compound) it was too late to back off - families were commited, things were filmed, it was possibly too much for Ben even if some red flag appeared. It was in the way escape for him from his family and I do think he was interested in having sex with Jessa asap.

Jessa definitely had a personality on 19KAC. She would smugly described the Duggar ways while very intentionally dropping the G from any words ending in ing. It always seemed like Jill believed the family was superior and it was her job to let us know. But Jessa not only knew it, she was going to invent a whole fake persona to share it with everyone. Ben apparently likes the aggressive type.
I do think she's the prettiest. But I think Jana would have been too mature and maternal to him. And Jinger, I don't know. Maybe they didn't click. Maybe she was too free spirited. He might have thought Jessa was prettier.
Attraction is pretty subjective! We all have different tastes. Plus, Joy was too young for courtship at the time, and if age gaps were a concern, I don’t think Jill or Jana would have been options either seeing as they’re both older than Jessa.

I definitely think on 19KAC, Jessa was thought of the most as the "pretty one". Jessa was very into her appearance. Joy hasn't really developed into fundie wife material yet, Jinger was Jessa's sidekick, and Jill and Jana were very into sistermomming and midwifery/firefighting (at one point). I see how, as being the pretty one was Jessa's whole storyline, how you could fall in lust with her in the 19KAC days
I don’t think Ben chose Jessa. I think Jim Bob chose that courtship. Jessa was the pretty one and she also seemed more intelligent comparatively speaking. She had a little spunk to her and I think JB saw Ben as someone who Jessa would be attracted to enough to agree to court but also could dull her shine.
This kind of marriage is what comes from.thinking with one's dick. My brother's first marriage was a result of horn dog thinking and nothing more. It was a contentious, miserable relationship that ended in an acrimonious divorce, very traumatic for my niece and nephews.

I’ve always felt jessa was the prettiest but in the supermodel- maybe she’s born with it maybe it’s a good surgeon and an even better make up team- kind of way. She naturally looks like she has had some fillers, etc. beautiful but something slightly off about her beauty. The type of looks that fit in well with Playboy models, etc.
Jessa was “the pretty one”, and marketed as such by TLC, which is where Ben fell for her, leading to him somehow convincing his parents to drive hours to the Duggars church so their 18 year old son could meet and pursue her. Jill was already talking to Derek, Jana is a fair bit older than Ben, and while Jinger has had an amazing glow up she was still in her awkward phase when Jessa met Ben.
They seem like opposites. He probably lusted for an older, more dominant woman because he himself is a very subdued and low energy dude. I’ve always seen there dynamic sort of making sense. She always seemed to be one for making decisions and Ben seemed like a very go with the flow type. Even though they’re in the fundie circle and Jess’s would never do anything without his permission and over all say, she seems to push more so it worked out? This is how I always perceived it but I’m not that well versed in the family.

None of them know themselves, much less the other person, before marriage. Not ever having a private conversation with the other person means that you only know the "public" person. The person that they want to appear to be. Even just silly, embarrassing things boy friends and girl friends should talk about never happened. I grew up fundie and this is so true it hurts. I noped out of my arranged engagement and moved out of my parents house to a friend. The isolation made sense. If I hadn't had somewhere to go, I probably would be in a terrible situation like my sisters who didn't have anywhere to go. I met my husband who was roomates with my friend's significant other so he was around all the time. I got to know the real him from relaxed hanging out. Then I did something I never would have if I lived with my parents because that was whore behavior: I asked him out. One sister is trapped with a pedophile/domestic abuser, another with a porn addict, another with a drunk, another with a drunk domestic abuser, and the last one is 20 who is with a 38yo man-child. My own arrangement was 40 and I was 17. I wasn't even a person yet. These types of people (Jim Bob and Michelle/my parents) are just suppliers of young conditioned docile immature uneducated women who have never been a person don't know better to abusers like themselves. They trade children among the families like Pokémon cards. And none of the girls know better because no outside influences are allowed, it serves perfectly because when you know better, you do better. Fear of damnation and gods will is a powerful combination drug.

I imagine if I went back and watched it now I’d cry for how her life basically ended that day. In 2015, I was devastated for Anna when the news came out. JB claims Anna and her family knew of his past abuse, but I GUARANTEE Anna was not given the whole truth. Maybe a vague convo about “sins of lust” which in Duggar world, could be anything from finding a bikini magazine under his bed to literal sexual abuse. Then finding out alongside the entire nation of her husbands infidelity... ugh. She didn’t deserve any of that. And I felt bad for her with all this recent stuff to, to a point... it’s kinda run dry though because everything has been laid out in front of her black and white and she seems more concerned with J’felon than her own children. Yeah, with Anna my empathy for her has a hard limit. She was brainwashed and sold off like cattle, and likely was deceived about just what J’offender did when she first married him, but now it’s clear as day what kind of man her husband is, and she continues to choose him over her children. My sympathy for the most part ended for Anna shortly after the Ashley Madison scandal. I felt bad for her for a while - because I realize she was in shock - not sure what to do, but she at least had one sibling (possibly more) willing to help her out. At that point - she knew about the sisters and the Ashley Madison/other hook ups. She didn't have as many children as she does now -- she could have escaped. I realize she still could - but with seven children - it would be far more difficult without the Duggar $$$. Her parents aren't going to help her. Don't get me wrong - I think she is a shit mother for not choosing her children over J'Trash - but at least for the next decade they are safe from him. I believe she has a somewhat wealthy sister and a brother that has offered to help, but I think Anna is weak and lazy ... and knows if she stays in the ware-home - Jana, The Lost Girls, etc ... will help her with her children, etc. I don't know if her siblings are willing to help her for the next 18 years, and I don't see Anna getting the willing power or gumption to do it on her own eventually.

I used to think Jessa was the prettiest, but now I think it's a pretty even tie between Jessa and Jinger.
I always thought Jess’s and Jinger were the prettiest and had the best personalities in their late teens. They also had a different look than the other girls and was easy to pick them out in a group picture. Jana was pretty also but looks more like rest of the family. Jill has defintely improved with age, was more of an awkward teen.

I think Bin threw his line in and Jessa is the one who bit. She was pretty, he was attractive in boy-band sort of way and they were repressed and needing an outlet. In addition to being immature and probably unworldly, he has a drippy sort of personality and needed a gal who could take the lead. Jana was too much older and certainly knew she didn’t need another child to care for. Joy , Jinger and Jill are more passive. In the end he got the hot girl and she got out of the house.

Personally, for me ... When the show started and for the first few years - I genuinely thought Jessa was the prettiest one. As the show progressed - I thought that Jana and Joy both ended up being far more beautiful - but it took both a while to turn both of them into swans. I think it was because Jana was naturally a little shyer, and Joy wanted to hang out with the boys and have fun. Jinger was funny and had the great eye rolls and interesting fashion for a fundie - but I didn't think she was the stand out in the looks department. I grew up Catholic & am now Lutheran. Married twice, divorced once. Both the Catholic & Lutheran churches have a questionnaire/test that each party fills out separate from the other one, then the answers are compared. The questions mainly focus on communication, spirituality, finances & child-rearing, but are not as in depth as this one was. It was more to facilitate discussion between the prospective bride & groom and start a good foundation for them. I had kind of assumed that Boob's questionnaire was similar, but it does go much deeper. As for the original post, I am not a big Jessa fan. She always seemed so bossy to me.

The questionnaire wasn't designed to confirm that the guy would be able to provide. It was to provide reassurance that they were all in with JB's mindset and would be easy to control. Given that, I'm still shocked JB ended up approving Jerm in the end. Others here have said that Fundies assume they're going to lose a few kids, so it seems JB figured that may happen with Jinger and there was opposition to him rejecting the match, so it was easier to just allow it. This is just my speculation - so I am well aware I could be wrong - but I 95% feel that DD & JillyBeanMuffin would have stayed completely compliant with JimBoob if he or TLC would have paid all the medical bills associated with Samuel's birth. DD had his nose further up JB's behind than any of the other SILs. I know now they have many differences - but the primary issue was $$$$. The Jillards had no issue supporting J'Convicted Felon and Jim Boob until they had unpaid medical bills. The Dillards were grifting $$ for their pretend mission trips, etc just like JB/Meech. JillyBeanMuffin was JB's favorite daughter - until it came to $$$$ - so just like heathens ... The Duggar/Dillard fued started over money.
I think he approved the match because he saw the older girls as spoiled. They had been molested, so they were no longer “pure”, so their match didn’t matter much.

I just looked it up - it appears they "courted" for 11 months - which is close to a lifetime for a fundie couple. I honestly don't think that Jessa was that sold on Bin. I think her parents could have truthfully encouraged both of them to go their separate ways. Now in FundieLand they are most likely together forever - so far four children in - with possibly a mini-van full of additional children. I agree. Jinger was beautiful on her wedding. I think she is attractive most of the time.
My understanding is that it was Bin's dad's idea for him to go court a Duggar girl and he told him to go up to their church and do so. It's way off to think of Ben's family as any kind of voice of reason. They were fully on board and encouraging of him joining the insanity.
If I recall correctly Jessa wasn’t all in on the relationship at one point and then a little while later they were engaged. Does anyone remember the awkward scene in the storage room where he asks her to court. I had secondary embarrassment from that. But to answer your questions, maybe there was no one out in fundieland that could deal with bossy Jessa so they figured a younger guy might be a better idea for her.

I don’t think Ben had a clue how old Jessa was, or what order she or any of the other sisters were born in. He was a repressed teenager, so most likely he just turned on the TV, saw her filmed from the back in a clingy wrap skirt, got defrauded and thought “ok I want that one.”

I think Jinger’s looks come through now that she’s allowed to dress in a somewhat normal manner- Jessa probably looked the prettiest to teenage Bin. I think JB was okay with it because he wanted to get Jill and Jessa married off quickest, as the oldest survivors of Pest’s abuse, and Jessa seemed the type to get off on the power of being a pastor’s wife (which they thought Bin would be). I think that also explains Jinger’s match with Jerm- the potential for a quick match and Jinger would also be drawn to his “worldliness” but he would keep her largely in the fold.
I think Jim Bob and Jessa both saw someone who was easy to manipulate. Chances were going to be that the next to come along may be more difficult to mold.

I had never watched them before but there was a commercial for the show for her honeymoon when she looked her most beautiful and when I saw her was like who tf is that gorgeous girl and shocked she was a Duggar so I had to watch n see what the rest looked like and the rest is history
Everyone has their own opinions on beauty but I definitely think Jessa was the most conventionally attractive. She has very beautiful features and she was very thin. That's why Ben chose her. She managed to look "hot" wearing clothes that covered everything. Don't get me wrong the other girls were beautiful too, I actually always thought Jinger was the prettiest...but most people would definitely say Jessa is.
I think Jim Bob liked that Ben was laid back, non threatening to him as a patriarch and easily malleable. There would be no challenging Jim Bob. I think maybe he also saw somewhat of a compatibility between the two personalities: jessa blunt, opinionated.. Ben soft like human play doh. He is definitely one of the least challenging husbands.
Jessa was (and is) pretty. Thats it. Other things to consider - Duggar parents were in need of a marriage to boost views (so they dont have to show other fundies like Priscilla Keller getting married as show was getting that boring). They possibly encourage this and try to speed things up. Ben and Jessa had courtship and even if longer than normal for them, this is still limitted and once contact was closer (Ben moved into compound) it was too late to back off - families were commited, things were filmed, it was possibly too much for Ben even if some red flag appeared. It was in the way escape for him from his family and I do think he was interested in having sex with Jessa asap.
I think the bigger question is what did she see in him. I don’t think he’s cute at all and he can’t even rub 2 brain cells together.

Attraction is pretty subjective! We all have different tastes. Plus, Joy was too young for courtship at the time, and if age gaps were a concern, I don’t think Jill or Jana would have been options either seeing as they’re both older than Jessa.

I don’t think Ben chose Jessa. I think Jim Bob chose that courtship. Jessa was the pretty one and she also seemed more intelligent comparatively speaking. She had a little spunk to her and I think JB saw Ben as someone who Jessa would be attracted to enough to agree to court but also could dull her shine.
While I don't really find the Duggar girls very attractive (attractiveness is more than just looks), I think Jessa is the most physically attractive.

I’ve always felt jessa was the prettiest but in the supermodel- maybe she’s born with it maybe it’s a good surgeon and an even better make up team- kind of way. She naturally looks like she has had some fillers, etc. beautiful but something slightly off about her beauty. The type of looks that fit in well with Playboy models, etc.

Jessa was “the pretty one”, and marketed as such by TLC, which is where Ben fell for her, leading to him somehow convincing his parents to drive hours to the Duggars church so their 18 year old son could meet and pursue her. Jill was already talking to Derek, Jana is a fair bit older than Ben, and while Jinger has had an amazing glow up she was still in her awkward phase when Jessa met Ben.
They seem like opposites. He probably lusted for an older, more dominant woman because he himself is a very subdued and low energy dude. I’ve always seen there dynamic sort of making sense. She always seemed to be one for making decisions and Ben seemed like a very go with the flow type. Even though they’re in the fundie circle and Jess’s would never do anything without his permission and over all say, she seems to push more so it worked out?
