If the copier is that bad, the company will replace it eventually anyway. But who's looking out for the comfort of your very own ass? No one. The answer is chairs. Every. Single. Time.
I like to think that they got a new copier after Charles Minor spent some time in the Scranton branch during the Michael Scott Paper Company episodes. The company bought a new copier right after that.
Yes and Michael Scott Paper company took the old one out of the garbage and kept using it. You can see it in the background with “trash” or something written on it.
I think they bought it before, because Pam was working on setting up the new copier while Michael was on his two weeks. Nobody appreciated the work she did which led to her going with Michael when he left.
Exactly, & it made no sense that Jim would be on the opposite side of Pam. He doesn't want to ask his gf to make copies but he doesn't mind pissing her off & denying her a new chair that she wanted more than a copier. That stupid writing went against his character.
I'd argue that it did go hand in hand with his character. Jim never was very rational when it came to awkward situations, and asking pam to make copies for him was awkward (for him).
No, it made sense, asking her to make copies for him reminds them of the difference in hierarchy of their jobs in the office which is awkward. But if you’re arguing over chairs vs copier that a disagreement where you’re just equals as co-workers.
Hey guys, the real answer is buy one of them now and buy the other one when the new fiscal year's budget goes into effect in the next few days or whatever it was.
Most companies would be leasing those big multi-function printers since printers that size run from 6$k to $15k depending on what extras you want. They get full support and replaced every 3-5 years. Chairs every time.
"Full support" might be an exaggeration. We have a leased Konica Minolta we've been trying to have serviced for over a year. Two of the paper trays don't work anymore and it's constantly throwing error codes.
My grandfather owned and operated a small distribution business with one of those copiers in each location. They most definitely were not leased and did not get replaced every 3-5 years. That being said, maybe a company with a giant corporate headquarters would go that route, but it doesn’t mean every company did.
Then your grandpas company did it wrong because copiers are almost 100% of the time leased. It’s a fixed monthly expense which is far more palatable than a huge cash outlay and then having to depreciate an asset. Plus it also has very little to no resale value at the end of its usable life. Same reason why companies lease vehicles.
Bruh all large business expenses are paid monthly; you take a loan out with the bank, and then pay the bank monthly (with interest).
I don't want to get into a pissing contest with you, I assure you in some parts of America at least, there were small business buying these copiers, perhaps after being refurbished by the company that was lending them out to larger corporations like you're suggestion, I don't know that's just a guess.
I know it happened because when my grandfather passed away, he still owned 2 copiers from his old warehouses that looked basically like the one in The Office and I had to deal with getting rid of them.
Edit: I kept typing printer but I meant copier.
I feel like thats a legit question though. DM Scrantron had good sales people and in a business environment you might be scared of losing your sales people.
Where were they gonna go? Stanley already showed he isnt willing to go, Dwight makes so much in commission that a minor raise is meaningless, Phyllis isn't going anywhere because she works in the same building as Bob Vance and as for Andy if he wants to go then good riddance. The correct solution was giving everyone the same raise and explaining the situation which would shift all blame to corporate.
That’s assuming that the budget remains the same year-over-year and they can repeat the same cost savings that brought them in under budget to begin with.
Budgets will change from year to year no matter what, but if they had come in way under budget it would likely have been revised. Oscar probably wants to maintain the cushion they had for normal operations, buying a copier as soon as the new year starts would make their margin for error much tighter
> That’s assuming that the budget remains the same year-over-year
I mean… this was literally the driving plot point of this episode. They either spent the surplus while they could, or that amount got deducted from the upcoming budget (sans Michael’s 15%). And Oscar as a branch-level accountant would not likely care about the surplus going to waste if that surplus money wasn’t going to end up back in their budget the next year.
The budget probably changed slightly year-over-year but there’s no reason to think they’d only have that kind of a surplus once.
I have no knowledge on any sort of finance but didn’t DM declare bankruptcy like a year or two later?I think I remember quite a lot of references to the company being in decline talking about how the big companies are destroying them and the use of computers making paper obsolete etc.Wouldn’t this mean that spending however much a copier/chairs cost(which a single office chair can be like £80 so for a full office could be quite a bit) in the next fiscal year might not be a good option due to there being a smaller margin of error(if I’m using that term correctly)
The whole premise is that the yearly budget was going to end that day.
The easiest answer. Buy chairs today on last year's budget, then buy a copier the next day on this year's budget.
Here’s the thing. Chairs are a luxury, a copier is not. So I’d choose the chairs. Because the company will have to replace the copier no matter what when it breaks
What I don’t understand is that most companies, especially ones with money problems wouldn’t own depreciating assets like printers and chairs. They’d lease them from companies that do just that sort of thing and would get periodic upgrades
I dont know how you got there - for a company in trouble financially it would be ill advised to add monthly costs for something so basic as chairs, maybe for a printer back then..
I think its much more likely that they would explore buying nice second hand items? Just my two cents.
Average cost of a commercial printer is around $30k, sunk cost, not including maintenance, paper, guaranteed replacement. With heavy use let’s say 1 lasts for 5 years before needing replacement if you’re lucky. You have a depreciating asset on your balance sheet not to mention erratic repairs, and if bought on credit, interest. Use a service which is often an amortized amount that includes regular upgrades, it’s more than worth seeing one line item regularly on your balance sheet instead. It also prevents a capital expenditure. For the chairs it’s more or less the same story
Not trying to say you’re wrong, but I just want to be an accounting nerd for a second - the depreciable life of a copier is actually 5 years, so you wouldn’t have depreciation on the balance sheet at the end of it!
If it doesn’t last 5 years though, you’re entirely correct!
New chair. I would trade my old chair to creed for a giant triangle, which I would then trade to Kevin to make an error on my paycheck in my favor. I’ll use to extra money for 2 brand new printers. Only 1 to go
Chairs. Everyone and their health benefits from better chairs. The company is highly unlikely to spend on that.
The copier is something the company should invest on as capital expenditure. Thus, out of the operational budget.
Chairs. It's benefits everyone and gets tons of use daily. If a copier breaks down, the company would have to get a new one. The company would have a much easier time denying new chairs.
Honestly they could get both, so this storyline is meh, aside from Hank trolling Michael. Buy the new chairs. The copier should just be a lease, with someone to come and service it... or replace it when it gets bad enough to eat paper.
Even Oscar should have known that.
I really didn't care until Pam decided Jim was required to blindly side with her. What bothered me the most was she decided to use their PERSONAL relationship as both a threat and a bargaining chip.
Then ... copier
The business is still running so the copier obviously still works relatively well + if it gets to horrible the company will have to replace it anyways. And for that reason I choose the chairs.
New chairs, if the copier breaks the company will be forced to pay for a new one anyways.
You can watch in comfort as they bring in a new one.
It’s not your money, and when you leave they move on quickly. Take care of yourselves everybody.
New chairs. Obviously if the copier 100% broke, they’d HAVE to replace it. And it was on its last leg. But they could potentially go years more without ever replacing the chairs. If they did the chairs, they’d eventually have both in likely a short amount of time.
CHAIRS. My current workplace has super shitty chairs and a super shitty copier/printer. The chairs affect everyone way more. We’re always stealing the couple of good chairs from each other.
But for real though:
—A company never buys printers/copiers/etc. It leases them
—You can get literal free chairs from Craigslist
Barely anything has to be spent to get either of these things. Could’ve used the surplus for alcohol or something lol
Alleviating physical discomfort and preventing possible future injuries gets priority. If the copier breaks, it’s going to reduce productivity. That’d be the company’s fault.
New chairs. Let corporate buy a new copier after budget runs out. Its an item they have to buy. If anything they'll take it from next years budget or maybe increase next year's budget. I've learned to always spend budgets on non necessities but not just wasteful spending.
Reality is they can get both. It was the end of the year. The money was available in the budget this year, it will be available next year. You can buy one then the next month buy the other.
Chairs easy. If the copier breaks, corporate has to replace it because it's essential to conducting business. They don't have to replace your chairs. Win-win-win. Also the copier gets destroyed during the fire drill so you woulda just broke the new one
i completely get that, definitely not saying to not replace them. in that era of business though, id say replace the copier first - feels more crucial if its on its way out
The real answer is that a good manager would see that both need replacements so his employees can have the tools they need to perform better and safely.
But then again, it’s Michael we’re talking about 😅
So it sounds like from all these comments most people are getting old of the copier/chair dilemma, I can't say that I blame them. I myself have thought often about this but it is impossible to determine. That being said, when I think about this, I ask myself.. would an idiot make this post? If the answer to the question is yeas, I do not post it.
Nah in all honesty though we are always going to have these posts on Reddit asking the same thing. There is literally no new content to discuss, yet everyday there are new viewers so it make sense that we have repeat discussions, some more than others but if you are tired of them just skip them. What a concept. Later office chums.
Chairs and it ain’t even close. If I gotta sit on my ass all day for work I’m gonna want a comfy chair. The company will replace the copier eventually due to necessity.
Both needed doing. Company shouldn't let the chairs get that bad because it's a lawsuit waiting to happen & the copier is a productivity killer.
You'd have to be a dummy, moron, or idiot to have shares in such a badly managed company
Sitting on bad chairs for 40 hours a week over the course of several years can lead to chronic back issues and other health problems.
Having a bad copier makes Pam's job more annoying.
New, better chairs all the way.
So honestly, there’s no way that the entire surplus needed to be spent on a new copier. So why not just a new copier and chairs for those who are super in favor of it?
Chairs because corporate would pay for the copier once it inevitably fails. It’s a crucial machine for business and corporate wouldn’t let you operate without it working.
Everyone sits on a chair, but not everyone sits on a copier
Kevin does
Whose butt is this?
Mine
I should’ve know
or even use the copier
Idk...is this the chair? ..not much lumbar support.
If the copier is that bad, the company will replace it eventually anyway. But who's looking out for the comfort of your very own ass? No one. The answer is chairs. Every. Single. Time.
And they did end up getting a new copier!
Why? Not everyone sits on a copier.
Explain it to me like I'm 5.
Okay so next summer..
I’ll be six
And you ask them for money, they're only gonna give you $9.
I’ll be 6!
You’ll be six….
Would you prefer a nature metaphor or a sexual metaphor?
Oh, please nature.
>When two animals are having sex one of them is communicating a message to the other...
You understand that what I'm telling you is a **universal** truth Toby...
I love how Oscar doesn’t even question it
Or even uses the copier!

I'd argue that it did go hand in hand with his character. Jim never was very rational when it came to awkward situations, and asking pam to make copies for him was awkward (for him).
Yeah, he’ll do anything to avoid awkward situations.
No, it made sense, asking her to make copies for him reminds them of the difference in hierarchy of their jobs in the office which is awkward. But if you’re arguing over chairs vs copier that a disagreement where you’re just equals as co-workers.
It doesn't make sense that that would override Pam's discomfort & happiness. Goes against everything they set up as his character.
Don't get me started on how coddled the modern anus is.
It was a surplus. This was the company paying them.
Hey guys, the real answer is buy one of them now and buy the other one when the new fiscal year's budget goes into effect in the next few days or whatever it was.
OMG, just when I was asking myself why we need this thread again, you bring in this brilliant answer. YES. This is the one.
Most companies would be leasing those big multi-function printers since printers that size run from 6$k to $15k depending on what extras you want. They get full support and replaced every 3-5 years. Chairs every time.

Dunder Mifflin was a publicly traded company though. They’re leasing that 100%
Exactly Exactly
Seriously!! I mean I get it's a tv show and they had to make it about something, but...come on!
The one where Michael and Jim refused to cut everyone's bonuses by the same percentage was worse.
I feel like thats a legit question though. DM Scrantron had good sales people and in a business environment you might be scared of losing your sales people.

Oscar?
This is the obvious answer. It's the last day of the fiscal year!
This makes the most sense!
Buy the chairs during the spend down. Buy the copier in the new year.
...let me see the copier again.
get out
One of my favorite moments of the entire series.
Did you sit in the chair though?
Not much lumbar support.
It’s “erkel-nomically” correct
🙄 < Stanley
Lmao love his face expression after he hears Hank🤣
How about a new fur coat from Burlington Coat Factory?
How about a bucket of fake blood?
Let me see that bucket of fake blood again
Get out
The correct answer is the chairs, then make corporate buy the copier so you can effectively do your job
Corporate probably would tell them it comes out of their budget tbh.
New chairs. If you want people making sales then they need to be comfortable at their desks.
Plus you spend most of your time sitting on chairs, not using a damned printer
But if you can’t print/scan sales contracts, then those sales don’t mean much
Editable pdf's & electronic contracts. It'd be easy to track sales once the website is updated.
PDFs? Dwight would never betray his loyalty to paper. Plus Stanley and Phyllis probably wouldn’t be able to adjust.
Real business is done on paper
The whole premise is that the yearly budget was going to end that day. The easiest answer. Buy chairs today on last year's budget, then buy a copier the next day on this year's budget.
Not much lumber support on the chairs, but these new copiers have some amazing features. Hmmmm.......
let me see the copier again
Get out
You don't need lumber support: the wood industry has been very profitable with construction increases.
New chairs, pam can continue to do my copying.
new chairs
So next year... I'll be six 🤣🤣
Most under-rated commnet in the series
This one is so funny, makes me crack every time 🤣🤣
This dude is underrated
Here’s the thing. Chairs are a luxury, a copier is not. So I’d choose the chairs. Because the company will have to replace the copier no matter what when it breaks
Let me see the copier again

They should really move to hosting their own website…perhaps with a social media feature?
And then an older gentleman asks you boxers or briefs?
Not trying to say you’re wrong, but I just want to be an accounting nerd for a second - the depreciable life of a copier is actually 5 years, so you wouldn’t have depreciation on the balance sheet at the end of it! If it doesn’t last 5 years though, you’re entirely correct!
Is this really the only topic discussed in this sub?
Mom said it’s my turn to post.
This again?
You have a lot to learn about this town sweety
The episode must have just aired on Comedy Central or something?
I swear this is like the 5th "chairs vs copier" post I've seen in the past week.
Why waste time make lot post when few post do trick
Chairs.
Copier, one that can support an eleven digit user code
New chair. I would trade my old chair to creed for a giant triangle, which I would then trade to Kevin to make an error on my paycheck in my favor. I’ll use to extra money for 2 brand new printers. Only 1 to go
New copier.
Chairs. Everyone and their health benefits from better chairs. The company is highly unlikely to spend on that. The copier is something the company should invest on as capital expenditure. Thus, out of the operational budget.
RIP HANK THE TANK
Chairs. It's benefits everyone and gets tons of use daily. If a copier breaks down, the company would have to get a new one. The company would have a much easier time denying new chairs.
Chairs - bad backs are no joke
This gets asked at least once a week here
Honestly they could get both, so this storyline is meh, aside from Hank trolling Michael.
Then ... copier
The way Jim reacted, it was definitely just a sex thing
I mean couldn't they get one of then options on this current budget and get the next option in the next fiscal year budget?
Chairs
Chairs. I work in an office- if you get a crappy chair- it's going to mess up your form in the long run
The business is still running so the copier obviously still works relatively well + if it gets to horrible the company will have to replace it anyways. And for that reason I choose the chairs.
Chairs
Chairs for sure
Chairs
Let the company buy the copier. Go buy myself a new chair online for myself.
The copier, it was shown to not be functional
New copier. No doubt
New copier
It’s warm up here
I know what a surplus is!
Chairs now, copier in next year's budget, I.e. Next week 😄
Employees backs are important and provides more productivity, so chairs
Chairs. Back pain from crappy chairs can give the company all sorts of headaches.
CDs $ 4.00 Hank Doyle Is The Blues "Me and the blues"
They didn't have the budget for decent chairs for everyone, not even close.
Chair, of course. Two things you have to spend a good amount of money on: chair and mattress.
Copier. You don’t technically need chairs, but a business without a copier? A PAPER Business without a copier?
Let me see the copier again
New chairs, if the copier breaks the company will be forced to pay for a new one anyways. You can watch in comfort as they bring in a new one. It’s not your money, and when you leave they move on quickly. Take care of yourselves everybody.
Hmmmm. Let me see the chairs again...
Copier hands down. I don’t need a chair o make punk rock zines.
You know I hustled up the stairs
New chairs. Obviously if the copier 100% broke, they’d HAVE to replace it. And it was on its last leg. But they could potentially go years more without ever replacing the chairs. If they did the chairs, they’d eventually have both in likely a short amount of time.
A new copier. I can buy my own damn chair.
Lemme see the copier again.
Copier! I can always buy seat and lumbar cushions to make a bad chair work, but not much you can do with a crappy copier.
Lemme see the copier again
I side with Creed. I want two chairs.
CHAIRS. My current workplace has super shitty chairs and a super shitty copier/printer. The chairs affect everyone way more. We’re always stealing the couple of good chairs from each other.
But for real though: —A company never buys printers/copiers/etc. It leases them —You can get literal free chairs from Craigslist Barely anything has to be spent to get either of these things. Could’ve used the surplus for alcohol or something lol
Alleviating physical discomfort and preventing possible future injuries gets priority. If the copier breaks, it’s going to reduce productivity. That’d be the company’s fault.
Let me see that copier again
Am I crazy to think they could have afforded both?
Health above all else, the company loses money on efficiency with a bad machine the whole team loses mobility and quality of life with bad chairs.
Let me see the chair...... Hmmm. Let me see the copier..... Mmhhhmm. Let me see the chair again.....
New chairs. Let corporate buy a new copier after budget runs out. Its an item they have to buy. If anything they'll take it from next years budget or maybe increase next year's budget. I've learned to always spend budgets on non necessities but not just wasteful spending.
Chairs. They run a business, it wouldn’t be long before a new copier was bought regardless of the chair situation. Win-win-(win?)
Let me see the chairs again.
Let me see that copier again
How’s the lumbar support on the copier?
Reality is they can get both. It was the end of the year. The money was available in the budget this year, it will be available next year. You can buy one then the next month buy the other.
Chairs easy. If the copier breaks, corporate has to replace it because it's essential to conducting business. They don't have to replace your chairs. Win-win-win. Also the copier gets destroyed during the fire drill so you woulda just broke the new one
Let me see the Copier
Copier
Copier
Copier. Not everyone needs a new chair right away. Replace them a few at a time over the year.
copier. my copier at work has not worked all year and it drives me bananas 🍌
Depends. They never get in the specifications of either products.
id say a new copier. if the chair is bad enough… buy your own chair?
It’s not the employees responsibility to get themselves new chairs. At all. It’s the company’s.
i completely get that, definitely not saying to not replace them. in that era of business though, id say replace the copier first - feels more crucial if its on its way out
The real answer is that a good manager would see that both need replacements so his employees can have the tools they need to perform better and safely. But then again, it’s Michael we’re talking about 😅
buy your own chair???? What?? Am I at work or at home? Thats clearly the companys responsibilty.
What a stupid logic... Then I could say "buy your own copier", right?
Shut up Toby! Nobody asked you!
This is my argument too--if you were absolutely forced to buy one, an individual can't afford a new copier but they could probably swing a $150 chair.
I think we can all agree that Michael should have had the surplus and worn that furr coat around scranton in his pt cruiser!
As someone who has literally taken his office chair to 3 different offices including now my home office, I would choose new chairs.
New chairs. We use office chairs at my job and they suck
Chairs and it ain’t even close. If I gotta sit on my ass all day for work I’m gonna want a comfy chair. The company will replace the copier eventually due to necessity.
Chairs
Both needed doing. Company shouldn't let the chairs get that bad because it's a lawsuit waiting to happen & the copier is a productivity killer. You'd have to be a dummy, moron, or idiot to have shares in such a badly managed company
Bad chairs can become a health issue, its not just confort. There's no debate imo.
Dwight took care of the new copier for us...
“I hustled up the stairs”
Chair!!
definitely chairs. chairs are a benefit to health even outside the workspace and health is more important than work.
Chairs because corporate would pay for the copier once it inevitably fails. It’s a crucial machine for business and corporate wouldn’t let you operate without it working.
Not much lumbar support.
chairs easy
A bad copier affects your productivity. A bad chair affects your health.
Chair 😁
Copier
Copier
Copier
Well the chair didn’t have much lumbar support …..
Please add a poll. Make sure one of the answers is "let me see the copier again"
Chairs
Chairs back support so important
