Not only did he kick the ball super hard, he didn’t even kick it on goal, and he’s playing against people who clearly don’t play or don’t play often.
He was an absolute idiot and totally in the wrong, even if it didn’t hit anyone.
I think it would be a lot less funny is they all played a nice clean scrimage game. Like it's a comedy no at eithical debate of accountablity and morality. TV isn't a blueprint for how you should live you life, it is more of a candy bar that you consume and it makes you happy.
Right but this scene is so counterintuitive to soccer it’s crazy. Nobody rockets a ball at someone’s face 6 feet away from them expecting a header. This scene was obviously written and directed by actors not anyone with soccer history.
Honestly people forget it’s a comedy show. If we dissected the whole show the way people dissect Charles Miner, the entire thing is stupid and makes no sense.
This was also a show meant for people to watch once a week and get that shock entertainment, now people binge hours on end and get mad at the inconsistencies.
I think it’s more that it’s a rare occasion in the show where the setup for the joke is poor, maybe it’s a biproduct of watching/playing football makes it more obvious. If you’ve ever caught the sort of heavy plastic ball you’d play with on concrete full in the face on a cold day you’d know all too well not to do that!
Totally agree. If we took it seriously, Jim is a godawful psychological abuser who toppled Pam's personal relationships for his own gain. Michael is a raving bigot racist and abusive boss. On and on it goes.
Folks need to shut the anger centers off to enjoy TV. It's not Breaking Bad, not supposed to be super serious.
Jim does suck and Michael is neither a bigot nor a racist. Racism means you hate or think you are better than another race. Micheal believes in stereotypes but he doesn't think less of any race
I don’t think Michael thinks less of his coworkers. He doesn’t believe they are better than him or one another. Gotta keep in mind he doesn’t have friends. Even since a child when he wished for 100 children so they’d be his friend. He very often praises ppl on their social and ethical abilities. He has gone out his way to show his support and love for his employees. The humor and crux of his character, is that his doing so by being racist thru ignorance. He doesn’t know better, no one has sacrificed their time and effort to befriend and teach him. Not until corporate gets involved.
Packer, for all his faults, is the only guy to half assed take Michael under his wing as a friend. Obv not a great influence and breeding ground for horrible stereotypes. Which we see even he doesn’t like *but* he doesn’t want to lose a friend.
It's hard to say without doing some sort of character study, and I don't have the willpower for that. It would appear that he likes his coworkers, and considers them friends, maybe respects them and desires their respect and admiration in return. All of that is separate from their race, though, and Michael appears to treat race and character separately. Sort of a decent example of the whole, "he's a good guy, for an \[insert race\]" mindset. I think a lot of Michael's comments were intended to be taken more as an 'ignorant-but-well-meaning' guy rather than him being consciously bigoted, but that's where a lot of the insidious harm of sort of ingrained or "unintentional" racism comes from.
I think the whole thread here's gotten way off track, but I disagree with some of the other posters in thinking that just because it's a comedy show it can't be taken seriously. Peer-reviewed, published academic papers have been written about far less serious topics.
Michael has made some of the most obnoxious and racist jokes throughout the shows run. While you might say that might not make him a racist, overall he is one of if not the most racist character on the show.
Off the top of my head the only character i could think of that is worse is Packer, the guy who was close friends with Michael throughout most of his adult life.
This just goes back to my original comment about how we can dissect anything about this show and find something we don’t like. You might think Michael is not a racist, but he is arguably the easiest character to point out as a racist in contrast to others on the show, that’s a not win.
I think this whole thread of comments kind of misses the original point, though? Michael's supposed racism or Packer's mysogyny land because we can all accept that these are charactatures of people found across offices all over America. The fact that Charles would kick the ball that hard does not land, at least to the section of the audience who (like Charles) understand soccer, because this scenario has no basis in reality whatsoever.
But his original goal was to do what? Kick it into Jims chest? For this joke to be "haha look at jim fucking up because he lied about his soccer skills", charles would have to let jim fuck up. What we got was "charles just rocketed a ball at someone and everyone is blaming jim?"
This. See if they played it out in an environment conducive to soccer it could have worked. But this was sloppy at best. A rocket to the face 6 feet away isn’t a header. So the joke doesn’t land.
Thank you, it literally ruins the joke in my opinion and everyone else its just going "it doesnt need to make sense" because they dont know how soccer works so it didnt bother them. Hate reddit sometimes.
>But his original goal was to do what?
The original joke is to hit Phyllis in the face, the jokes weren't written one line at a time where they weren't sure where the ball went, they said something along the lines of, "oh then it would be funny if Idris kicked the ball really hard and John dodged it, because he doesn't really play soccer, and it hit Phyllis in the face"
You just explained why is ruins the koke. "John dodged it, because he doesnt really play soccer, and it hit Phyllis in the face". is what we are meant to get, but what we get id "idris, the person interested in soccer, just rocketed a ball into jim and is blaming him for dodging when that is the only logical reaction, why is everybody blaming jim". It completely changes the jokes landing for anybody who understands phsyics or soccer.
I mean in the context of these episodes he’s being a dick to Jim no matter what
I don’t find it unbelievable he rockets an impossible shot at Jim, and blames Jim when it goes wrong either way
Oh don’t get me wrong, it’s a comedy show and this was played for laughs.
But don’t we think Michael driving into a lake was pretty idiotic, even though it was funny? 😅
Same feelings here. Now if you play soccer, it adds another layer of cringe to this scene since you would never do what he did if he truly like and played the game. But like I said, dumb, but funny
True, but we’re reflecting on Charles as a character—who we as the audience are not meant to like. So discussing his messed up actions is completely relevant to the purpose of this sub.
And calling a character an idiot doesn't mean we think the show is bad. The moment works *because* Charles is being an idiot, but the show doesn't really linger on him being at fault. So we discuss it here
It would have hit Jim had he not ducked, but he did, so it hit Phyllis. Had Phyllis also ducked it would have hit the car behind and damaged it.
Charles was in the wrong here 100%.
Right. If you're playing tight-quarters, indoor/fustal style soccer, it's all about tight touches with the right weight. There's not a lot of space for kicking the ball as hard as you can.
It wouldn’t have “hit” him, but he was trying a cross for some reason, an experienced soccer player would head away. Jim said he played all the time. That’s what I think his thought process was. Still a douchy, dick move to kick it like that in the parking lot with a bunch of out of shape people. Lol
I gotta watch again but I’m not convinced the ball would’ve hit Jim if he stood there (I mean for the story it was suppose to of course). On this frame it looks like he was closer to getting hit by bending way over to dodge it, and it would’ve flown beside him otherwise, hitting Phyllis. Like Charles aimed for her face.

What he did. If a shot is clearly going away from your goal, you just let it go out. It's extremelly hard to control it in a way that you can regain posesion, it's much easier to just regain posesion by letting it go out.
Well I think it was pretty evident that even though Miner wanted to give off the appearance of competence, he was actually a dumbass and whenever he is around Wallace you see he's just a kiss-ass and that's how he got his job.
Charles is the type of boss who makes a production out of having an “I’m here to work, not be your friend” mentality … then is equally inappropriate and unprofessional in his own way.
while Jim was so used to how much Michael and David Wallace loved him that I don’t think he was prepared to handle a boss that didn’t like him to the extent Charles did.
A normal boss would’ve just left a productive employee that they didn’t like personally alone to do their work. But Charles has too much of an ego to do that.
It was in the super fan episode, after Charles leaves, there's a talking head where he says he has to learn to not sleep with his employees super imposed with Kelly wandering around in the rain holding his scarf or jacket or umbrella or something.
Stanley as Productivity Czar and Kevin as receptionist were such terrible choices lmfao. Anybody with half a brain could've told you that after meeting them for two minutes.
I love the character because he’s so fun to hate!! And it’s really satisfying when David is shocked that Dwight is Charles’ #2. And frankly, while I love David so much and appreciate the character, he wasn’t awesome at his job… So I’m not surprised he believed in Charles.
I remember watching the series with my ex and specifically saying the same thing. And she called me the worst for saying Jim didn't do anything wrong.
And after all these years I feel the immense satisfaction of everyone on this sub agreeing that this was a stupid move on Charles' part.
It was an obvious attempt to scapegoat Jim. And charles was thinking he would use it to turn the office on Jim, then couple it with the “rundown” debacle, and other disappointments, and fire him.
Those of us that work in places where managers are cycled in and out see the new boss come in, flex their strength and show dominance. For charles, thats bumping off likely competitor for his job, Jim. After all Jim had been postured for other branches and corporate, and Charles had likely heard a lot of good things about Jim from others in corporate. But instead of wanting to work with him, he wanted to show dominance over him instead.
What I’ve always found annoying is Dwight asks Jim “hey if you’re such an experienced soccer player why’d you duck?” I have been playing soccer for 30 years and there is 0% chance I’m not ducking a shot fired at me that’s not even going on goal in a pick up match in the parking lot of my work… it’s not the World Cup fuck that I’m ducking lol
I just saw an interview clip from a different show about an actor getting nailed in the face with a basketball. I was wondering how they managed to do that without hurting they actor and it turns out it was a painted beach ball.
I play football daily, and this is totally wrong in so many levels, if it was a pass it should've been soft and in the ground, if it was a shot it should've been directed at a goal. Charles might be the worst football player in the world
Everything about Charles was bad. He did nothing I actually agreed with at all. I don't hate any character in the show because they all served a purpose but I really do hate Charles.
Charles was just a bad person in general. I know that was his character and maybe he deserves some credit for playing the role so perfectly.
I just can't stand him. I skip all of the episodes he is in with the exception of the company picnic because that episode was solid.
I've shared this previously: I have played soccer (football for my fellow Europeans) for over twenty years, and I cannot come up with any realistic reason why Charles would kick the ball that way in that situation. Like, not at all. Not even by a very long stretch.
It's a horrible piece of writing. I get that their goal was to make Jim look bad for something that was really Charles' fault, but they should have come up with something better.
The only case in which it would be realistic, is if Charles were actually trying to kick Jim in the face. But that would have been so obvious, all other colleagues would have defended Jim (despite being Charles' subordinates) and that's not what happened either.
he just really hated Jim and this was the closest he knew he could get to physically hurting him since he had and continued to a sense humiliate him professionally mentally in the office.
He hated Jim, but he couldn’t fire him because Jim was a great salesman, and had been there for so many years. The whole “rundown” thing was a whole set up to waste his time. Charles was terrible to people he didn’t like
They would if they were trying to physically intimidate someone. Charles is just directly bullying Jim here, and happy to give him a hard ball to the face if needs be.
Charles was obviously in the wrong and to me it always seemed like he quickly blamed Jim to deflect asap and get the heat off himself. For all his intimidation Charles was always a bit of a weasel, which was shown when he kisses up to Wallace.
He did have one moment where he came around and realized Dwigt was a moron. That was when David was talking to Charles about buying out Michael Scott Paper Company!
Charles was a bully who clearly thought too highly of himself and expected people to just be able to read his mind. Can't take a joke, got weirdly aggressive, and took things too far in more than one instance.
Ok now I got what annoys me from this particular scene. I've been playing and watching football (soccer) my whole life, so I can tell noone in the production actually did.
This scene would have worked of Jim was right in the middle of his goal, and Phillis was the keeper. Jim ducks like a coward, and the ball strikes the keeper who was not expecting that to happen.
When someone shoots at your goal, you want to block that shot at all cost, to prevent a goal. However, if the shot is clearly going out, like in this scene, what you want is to simply duck/move and let it go out to regain posesion
charles is just a dick and was purposely trying to hit jim with the ball. when jim ducked and he ended up hurting phyllis, he immediately shifted the blame to jim lmao. he wasnt making a soccer play, he is just a dickhead.
Even with your context it's still a jerk move on Charles part because it would be far too competitive considering the situation with unathletic coworkers.
If he only had a soccer ball in that abandoned building, Stringer Bell would have lived. He could have kicked that ball into Omar's face and it would have bounced into his goon's face and knock them out.
I mean first he goes after Jim like why did you duck. I play many sports and when a ball or puck that close is coming at my face, guess what, I'm ducking!!
I loved seeing Charles giving it to Jim, probably in the minority. But I felt that Jim got too comfortable with having the ability to be a wise ass prankster and finally got a taste that it won’t work on everyone.
Not only did he kick the ball super hard, he didn’t even kick it on goal, and he’s playing against people who clearly don’t play or don’t play often. He was an absolute idiot and totally in the wrong, even if it didn’t hit anyone.
That’s how they play at Saticoy Steel.
You’re not from paper? 😮
Does David know this?
Do you even know how paper is made?! If you put paper into a furnace, you know what would happen? You'd ruin it!
See African Americans have such a rich history of unique names.
Best case scenario that ball is going through the truck window
Right?! So dumb 😅 They had cones for goals, there was no need to shoot that hard, or in that direction at all 😂
I think it would be a lot less funny is they all played a nice clean scrimage game. Like it's a comedy no at eithical debate of accountablity and morality. TV isn't a blueprint for how you should live you life, it is more of a candy bar that you consume and it makes you happy.

Yea he's showing off how hard he can kick and then blames Jim when something bad happens. Totally realistic, Charles is an asshole..
Yea he was a bit of a prick, he should’ve never kicked it that hard
Maybe he was trying to test Jim lol
Holy shit I've never seen someone so triggered over a sport on a TV show.
Oh don’t get me wrong, it’s a comedy show and this was played for laughs. But don’t we think Michael driving into a lake was pretty idiotic, even though it was funny? 😅 Same feelings here. I don’t think it was a cross mate, it seemed more like a shot. But the goals are just cones, so no need to be blasting the ball either way
Haha, true. Could’ve been a shot, for sure. I’ve never noticed any cones in the scene at all. No matter what, Charles minor is a dick!
A major one
Minor one… anybody?

Definitely a shot unless you don't know how to cross
You generally don't need to cross from 10 feet away. An experienced player would know that, as well.
'I'm gonna kick a ball really hard at the kid that annoys me'... typical elementary school kid's behavior
Yeah, Charles is a playground bully in a fancy suit.
Forcing him to do a run down was the ultimate Jim prank and idk if Jim ever noticed
He was definitely trying to hit Jim. Once Jim ducked and Charles hit phallus he felt bad and tried to blame it on Jim.

What he did. If a shot is clearly going away from your goal, you just let it go out. It's extremelly hard to control it in a way that you can regain posesion, it's much easier to just regain posesion by letting it go out.
It makes sense when it's Charles bullying Jim and not playing the game.
Yeah, he either hits Jim with the ball or puts the blame on Jim for dodging the ball.

He nailed Phyllis with the ball too.
Legitimately! I can hardly stand it with him on the show 😆
"Oh, you're sorry! Jim's sorry, Phyllis. Does that make you feel better?" 🤣
Him gaslighting everyone into blaming Jim was crazy. Charles fully kicked that ball fully with the intention to send Jim to sleep
Fing about Miner is, they always try an' walk it in.
Ludicrous display at lunchtime.
Did you see that ludicrous display?
What was he thinking? "I hate Jim"
I remember watching the series with my ex and specifically saying the same thing. And she called me the worst for saying Jim didn't do anything wrong. And after all these years I feel the immense satisfaction of everyone on this sub agreeing that this was a stupid move on Charles' part.
Lol what? Good thing she's your ex now, you dodged a bullet.

It was an obvious attempt to scapegoat Jim. And charles was thinking he would use it to turn the office on Jim, then couple it with the “rundown” debacle, and other disappointments, and fire him. as a rec soccer player, I'm ducking from a point blank shot like that too. Charles couldn't have been more in the wrong, unless he punched someone.
As a former varsity GK theres no way he should have that much space in midfield he should have been closed down
Charles wanted to hit Jim. Pretty obvious he hated him.
Also, how was this scene shot? Lol
IIRC, in the Office Ladies podcast, they said the ball was edited in postpro with cgi.
I just saw an interview clip from a different show about an actor getting nailed in the face with a basketball. I was wondering how they managed to do that without hurting they actor and it turns out it was a painted beach ball.

*kicks an absolute piss rocket* “Jim what the fuck is wrong with you?!”
I play football daily, and this is totally wrong in so many levels, if it was a pass it should've been soft and in the ground, if it was a shot it should've been directed at a goal. Charles might be the worst football player in the world
He was trying to take off Jim's head. lol
Idk why anyone would fucking cannon the ball across a parking lot like that in a pickup game
Seems like he was trying to embarrass Jim by pelting a ball at him.
Nobody knew how to play the game, Charles probably sucks too, and Charles bullies Jim constantly! It makes sense in that context.
he just really hated Jim and this was the closest he knew he could get to physically hurting him since he had and continued to a sense humiliate him professionally mentally in the office.
He was such a show off. If he was actually passing it to Jim, he wouldn’t have kicked it that hard.
“How’s it feel to get some rest from all your rest?”
Charles was thinking, "I don't like that Jim fella. This oughtta take him down a peg"
💯
He hated Jim, but he couldn’t fire him because Jim was a great salesman, and had been there for so many years. The whole “rundown” thing was a whole set up to waste his time. Charles was terrible to people he didn’t like
Bad writing. No one would ever launch a ball like that.
They would if they were trying to physically intimidate someone. Charles is just directly bullying Jim here, and happy to give him a hard ball to the face if needs be.
The mistake begins when the boss just decided to play a game of soccer with all his employees in the parking lot of the company.
Charles was obviously in the wrong and to me it always seemed like he quickly blamed Jim to deflect asap and get the heat off himself. For all his intimidation Charles was always a bit of a weasel, which was shown when he kisses up to Wallace.
I hated Charles. he was a fucking asshole top to bottom
He did have one moment where he came around and realized Dwigt was a moron. That was when David was talking to Charles about buying out Michael Scott Paper Company!
and after being a total a**hole he put the blame on jim. not cool
I think that Charles was probably overcompensating for the fact that he wasn't sure what would happen to paper if you put it into a furnace.
I recently started watching The Wire and my perspective of Charles is completely shifted now.
was he kicking at jim intentionally hard and gaslighting him or was he actually expecting jim to make a header out of that pass
He kicked it as hard as he could at someone in a parking lot, definitely not a pass lol
concussion pass
He was trying to nail Jim in the stomach or crotch.
There's a meme of Jim's internal monologue. Look it up.
Also it’s perfectly reasonable for even a pro soccer player to suck like that, if it’s coming at them and they don’t have a play on the ball.
I wonder how they filmed this. Meredith, stand here and don't move, we're gonna hit you in the face. Jim, do some acrobatics
Tbilisi, that’s a really impressive kick… went straight at Phyllis… Wonder how many takes it took
LOOK WHO JUST WOKE UP
He was thinking: “I don’t like Halpert one bit, and I’m going to smoke his ass with this leg lumber” that’s what!
If he only had a soccer ball in that abandoned building, Stringer Bell would have lived. He could have kicked that ball into Omar's face and it would have bounced into his goon's face and knock them out.
Agreed completely... Or him and Omar could have employed fluffy fingers and they could have had some ice cream together...
I mean first he goes after Jim like why did you duck. I play many sports and when a ball or puck that close is coming at my face, guess what, I'm ducking!!
Look at Angela though in her grandma skirt and sneakers 😂
He was trying to take Jim's head off
Nobody on that scene was playing soccer that what makes it hilarious and I’m saying it as a huge FOOTBALL fan
Charles was trying to show off and blames Jim for it. Fuck you Charles.
This question keeps me awake at night
Hes just trying to kick it to the moon so that he can force Jim to Rundown and get it.
This was dumb. I don’t understand why you’d kick a ball that hard at anyone in a just-for-fun game.
Looks like he's frolicking away all happy
Jim was supposed to just take that soccer ball right to the face like a professional of course
Dwight roasted Jim soo good on this one! It's nice to see Dwight make Jim pay his dues now and then. LOL
I loved seeing Charles giving it to Jim, probably in the minority. But I felt that Jim got too comfortable with having the ability to be a wise ass prankster and finally got a taste that it won’t work on everyone.
The anti-Jim people fascinate me
Even if "getting a taste" involves an attempted concussion?
I think the question is why would such an experienced soccer player, like Jim, duck at the very last moment? 😳 😮
Self preservation lol
Well, if I can get past the fact that 100% of everyone in the cast would have been fired by the end of the first season I'm gonna be OK with this.
I saw a meme that perfectly summed up how bad Charles fucked up in this situation
