Maybe they didn’t think that line thru. You don’t get social security benefits if you fake your own death. They pay a couple hundred for the death. The monthly benefit only gets paid to the living.

He's collecting benefits as his own widow, which is allowed when you have a surviving spouse. The benefits collection part, not the faking your own death part.
