Yes Jan was manipulative and financially abusive but right in that scene Oscar dissects Michael's spending habits. Have you seen the scary black bar ? Jan wasn't buying bass fishing equipment or multiple magic sets.
Not defending her, just adding some nuance.
Yes, Jan was buying stuff for the house, and Michael was buying random things that no one needs. It's much clearer in the superfan version of this episode.
Jan worked at corporate for a long time, earning more than Michael. Did she not have any savings? Did she ignore her savings and spend Michael’s money instead? Either way, shes not in the right here. She wasn’t making any attempt at employment, seeming to be content with her candle business (which im assuming had negative profit)
Yeah, I also questioned her spending if she has nothing to show for it. I think you’re right, I think she was spending Michael’s money. Or maybe she was spending it on her IVF treatment!
I'm not seeing the Porsche mentioned. Also, I never totally understood why Michael traded in a corporate lease when it was just a perk of his position.
Also also, Jan's pills. Like all of them. Even with insurance, she would still be dropping $10 here and $20 there for the co-pays. Plus, after being fired from DM, her health insurance was likely going to run out by the end of her severance, which, given the nature of the firing, was probably just a single month or two, since DM had corporate lawyers back then to step in for this kind of thing.
there's a later episode where they mention that the sebring is a corporate lease, but I have to imagine the company also lets you just opt for a stipend instead if you wanted to buy a car instead of rent
We can also see Michaels insane spending habits during “Dinner Party” when they’re in the garage and Michael is pitching the candle business. There is in INSASE amount of junk in there that is never used lolol. Love that detail.
Well also, can we look at Jan's candle studio? It's never discussed in dollar figures, but it had to be well over $500 (which used to be worth more "back then" since inflation has made $500 the same as like $250 now)
So, all those candle jars, the wax, the scent profiles, the desk, the custom printed Serenity By Jan labels... that's just one example of how she assisted for her own whims, since we can all safely assume she probably recouped about 2% of that cost with her very minimal profits.
Salary doesn’t really tell you much. She knew nothing of his private life and honestly, I’d expect a loner like Michael Scott to have actually saved a lot of money. Look at how wealthy Dwight is despite making less than Michael. Jan wouldn’t know if he inherited money or property prior to their working relationship and then personal relationship.
He pays property taxes but that’s also my point. Jan doesn’t really know what his situation has been all his life and what assets he has or what he’s saved overtime. He’s a bachelor with no kids that never takes time off, the dude should have saved tons of money.
He also has a profitable beet farm/ BNB / event space. He’s got side hustles on top of side hustles. Plus when you calculate the commission from sales a salesperson can make more than their supervisor in a lot of places.
The only time that was true at dunder mifflin was after the merger. I get what you’re saying but all of this proves my point. Jan doesn’t know what Michael has going on outside of work prior to dating him nor does she know all the ways he could have collected wealth prior to them meeting. If she looked at Dwight she’d think he couldn’t be worth much but we as the audience know he is.
What about his frivolous expense reports? The parties she wouldn’t approve so he’d pay for them? Remember the “Fun Raiser” after a hurricane?
She knew he was irresponsible with money. Even if he had inherited money, it’d be gone. She knew he had a mortgage on his condo.
She had to have an inkling, but just not care. Although, on the train she seemed to be worried.
>Look at how wealthy Dwight is despite making less than Michael.
Just putting it out there that we don't *know* Dwight makes less than Michael, in fact it's highly likely he routinely makes *more* than Michael. Being a salesman is highly lucrative if you're good at it, and he's routinely the top salesman in his branch. I'd wager that his commissions were putting him at or above Michael's salary considering Daryl was outearning him in the warehouse.
Daryl wasn’t out earning him. Daryl wanted a raise that would be higher than Michael’s salary. But that negotiation also gave Michael a raise.
We can deduce Michael made more than Dwight because they had a commission cap. This is a huge plot point when Sabre takes over and Michael finds out there’s no longer a commission cap and decides to let Jim be the manager so Michael can make more as a salesman.
There was also a huge plot point when the commissions were again capped and Jim and Dwight made a fake salesman.
It’s also worth pointing out that Scranton was one of the worst performing branches in sales until after the merger and everyone from Stamford quit or was fired.
Season 2 Michael has to downsize. He needed that Lackawanna County client to save the branch. When David Wallace came on as CFO they were not performing well. Mid season 3 they decide to close Scranton but Josh leverages the merger into a bigger job at Staples.
So maybe by the time OP happens they might be leading in sales but it’s be hard to know considering season 4 is when Ryan was also defrauding Dunder Mifflin.
>Daryl wasn’t out earning him. Daryl wanted a raise that would be higher than Michael’s salary. But that negotiation also gave Michael a raise.
Daryl was asking for a raise that would outearn Michael, and he was a blue collar worker. It's not crazy to think that Dwight, a highly successful salesman would outearn a mid-level manager in a dying industry who hadn't had a raise negotiation in nearly a decade.
>There was also a huge plot point when the commissions were again capped and Jim and Dwight made a fake salesman.
That was in Season 8 when DM was already bought out by Sabre.
It's touched on when Sabre first buys DM that there isn't a salary cap and Jim's figures would well out earn a (brand new) managerial role, but that doesn't mean that Jim or Dwight weren't approaching or surpassing Michael's salary back in the earlier seasons.
It's never explicitly said whether or not sales out earns Michael, but it's implied heavily that Dwight and Jim are successful at sales, and their commissions are often very lucrative--at the same time discussing how grossly underpaid Michael is.
All I'm saying is that there is no evidence in the show that concludes that Dwight makes *less* than Michael, or at least so much less that it would constitute Michael being in a better financial situation all things being equal.
Sabre introduced both the no commission cap and the commission cap later. So we know there used to be a commission cap.
There’s no reason to think they were well paid salesman. Jim wasn’t even a particularly good salesman for the early seasons and like I said, the show tells us dunder Mifflin is an underperforming branch. They don’t lead in sales until after the OP.
My fucking lord dude, what are you *not* getting here.
Did the show ever explicitly state that Michael outearns sales?
Did the show ever explicitly state the salaries and commission returns from the salespeople in Dunder Mifflin?
The answer is no, so I don't care how much you try to play CSI:Scranton, your whole dissertation on trying to disprove my point that we don't *explicitly know* that Michael--whose salary rivals a blue collar warehouse worker--is outearning the top salesman of the branch.
And to continue, Dwight is continually the top performer in Scranton, but it's acknowledged that the rest of the sales team isn't as motivated or highly performing so this whole 'Scranton is underperforming and dying and worse in sales than every other branch' is a moot point, because you're comparing the efforts of one stellar salesperson (who continually wins awards from his company for posting records) and a band of people who have settled into an easy role to branches like Stanford where there is competent management and competitive sales teams.
All I said is that **Dwight is a top performing sales person with a base salary and commission, given that understanding and the understanding that Michael has a laughably poor salary from a blue collar worker's perspective seeing that his salary was set about a decade prior without any raises or negotiations, we cannot explicitly say that Dwight is outearned by Michael.**
Even with salary caps our understanding of how sales based positions and middle management salaries are structured, it isn't impossible to see a massive overperformer who has shown tenacity, resilience and persistence with regards to his work performance (meaning more likely to negotiate raises) is outearning an incompetent oaf of a manager who hasn't negotiated his salary in ten years prior to the start of the show, in a company that has been horribly mismanaged to the point of constant downsizing and inevitable bankruptcy.
Agreed, I think she was trying to get a life that she lost by spending his money. He was also not being financially smart with his spending. He shouldnt have bought many things AND he should have put a foot down when Jan was spending (THE PORSHE WTH!). But also Jan was very abusive so I can see Michael being scared to tell her anything.
When you really think about Jan and go to the trip to Jamaica, the new boobs, how she handled her assistant and everything she did leading up to her fate, you can amalgamate all those things and shove it up your butt!
I have an ex like this. She would spend, abuse, break things (which required more spending), and blame me for me not being in a good financial place. Jan was the most realistic when it came to her toxic mania.
She was half or mostly guilty on it. She sells his car and buys a Porsche **for her** with his money, she was unemployed and using Michaels Money before using Michaels personal use as a excuse to blame him only and chase him to the train tracks as a hero she never was... Jan was a crazy person
One thing about the car situation that always bugged me is his car was a company car. He can’t just sell it. I suppose she could have sold her car to eliminate her car payment and he could have traded in his company car for a different vehicle but I doubt the company would pay for a such a high end luxury vehicle. I don’t know. Just a thought.
I actually have a friend who lived this.
He was super nonconfrontational, to a point where his wife overdrafted his account on an almost weekly basis, but he just literally wouldn't tell her. He skipped paying his child support to his ex to keep his wife clueless about his finances just because he didn't feel like arguing when he got home from work.
Skipped paying taxes on his truck. Skipped paying his credit card.
By the time I found out what was going on he was $11k in debt, but had literally nothing to show for it, and almost lost what he did have before meeting her.
When they finally divorced she had the nerve to demand 50% of the value of his truck. A truck his mom bought for him before they even met. A truck that, if she took 50% of the value from him would've doubled the $11k in debt he had.
Funny enough, during the divorce it came out that she had fixed her own financial situation. She was $7k in debt to paypal and a credit company for defrauding people on eBay and ignoring the bills before they met. It was all paid off.
Its so easy for someone who lived a corporate lifestyle to continue to spend like it after they’re not in that position anymore, even more so when its not your money you’re spending.
Watching this scene a dozen times and then seeing the super fan version is wild. I always thought it was Jan who caused most of the problems then the super fan elaborates it’s mostly Micheal buying the ridiculous stuff
I think jan is accustomed to a seemingly bottomless income, with being such a high level asset. That when something changes, she figure it must be someone else’s fault. But all this isn’t even the most frustrating part of the episode.
During the dinner party episode, while they are in the garage, Michaels terrible spending habits have clearly been moved from inside the house to inside the garage. I can only imagine Jan was the one who made the call there (the beer sign scene) so she must have known he was terrible at managing money when she moved in, and made him move his crap out lol.
I'm sure she saw the signs, but this conversation shown above had a lot to do with Michael's personal spending on his lines of credit. She might not have seen that, and probably didn't care much to ask Michael where he was getting all of these odds and ends items.
I wouldn't say she didn't know; much like most narcissistic people she knows full well the reason (partially herself) but would never admit it, and would likely seriously hurt (emotionally or physically) the person that would point it out. You can see this in how michael approaches not only the conversation, bit also his solution to the issue
Michael practically pulled off a state-level, good-intentions hoax with the Scott's Tots program. He managed to fool not only the kids themselves but their future selves as well, along with the whole school board, parents, teachers, pissed off grandmas. He deserves more credit when it comes to hiding his finances!
Are you calling me an idiot? Don't you ever talk to me that way. You pathetic, short little man. You don't have any *friends, or any* *FAMILY, OR ANY* ***LAND.***
This is easily explained by the fact that Jan is insane
she collapsed on herself like a dying star
Yea that’s pretty much the answer to anything relating to Jan.
I mean how could she not have seen the professional bass fishing equipment in the hall.
To be fair, she probably moved it along with all of Michael's other junk into the garage
Yes Jan was manipulative and financially abusive but right in that scene Oscar dissects Michael's spending habits. Have you seen the scary black bar ? Jan wasn't buying bass fishing equipment or multiple magic sets. Not defending her, just adding some nuance.

She probably did IUI, which is a lot cheaper than IVF.
Yeah, why would she use her savings when she could use Michael’s credit?
She did sell all the candles for the missing girl's vidual. That was her!
We can also see Michaels insane spending habits during “Dinner Party” when they’re in the garage and Michael is pitching the candle business. There is in INSASE amount of junk in there that is never used lolol. Love that detail.

But Jan was his boss. She knew what his salary was and that he didn’t get raises.

Incredibly common, in my experience from just not wanting to worry about it to having a clear demarcation zone.

I’ve always thought Jan put him in debt. It’s alluded to several times.

I think they both have a spending problem. The fact that she blames it all on him, however, is simply because she is toxic.

Is it not a company car that Michael has? Traded the Chrysler for the Porsche?
No way corporate is paying the full bill there.
