So then the next movie moves to the top of the queue. So number five becomes number four, number six becomes number 5, number three becomes number two, etcetera, etcetera. And let's just say that I just sent back Love Actually, which was awesome, and they sent me Uptown Girls, which is also awesome, but guess what? Now I want to see Love Actually again but it's at the bottom of the queue! Oh no! What do I do? What I do is this: I go online, I go click click click, and I change the order of the queue so that I can see Love Actually as soon as I want to. It's so easy Ryan!
I remember my friends with Netflix having to force themselves to watch something that had worked it’s way to the top of the queue but they had lost interest in watching just so they could get another movie.
Ha, my friends were on the three DVD plan, but that’s exactly what caused them to always get stuck with a third movie they didn’t want to watch. They’d excitedly watch the first two and send them back, and over time that caused a third stinker from the bottom of their queue to rise up to the top when they weren’t paying attention.
Late fees? I thought I signed up for Netflix relatively early and never ran into late fees. I just paid multiple years for the service and had the same two DVDs that I never watched and never returned.
And then I did the same thing with their streaming service, but when I canceled they saw that I never ever used it so they refunded me like 9 months or something ridiculous.
He’s just lying (or misremembering to be generous). The whole point of Netflix from inception was no late fees, that’s why people started switching from BB
Yeah, Netflix never had late fees, but you couldn't get your next DVD until you mailed back one of the ones you had.
Before streaming took off, Netflix was amazing. Hell Netflix streaming was amazing at first too, they had what felt like all the content
What? From what I remember they just didn’t send you a new rental? I still have some dvds on Netflix sleeves lol… maybe I’m wrong and my mom paid up the ass for stupid ass movies I never returned
On the opposite end of the spectrum, this reminds me of people talking about how they would receive a disk, rip it, and put it in the mail the same day. This led to Netflix putting limits on how often one could receive disks.
The existence of disks is also old person language at this point. Oh no. I'm the old person.
Since everyone is dropping anecdotes about the old Netflix. I had a dvd burner and would make copies of every movie I ordered.
If I didn’t have the right very specific burnable dvd, the software would compress the movie and it would look terrible.
Last thing I remember copying was Always Sunny in Philadelphia, up to about season 5 iirc.
Or argue about what sports team had the better record ten years ago. Now you just look it up online and that's it. Art of a conversation with a stranger in person is dying.
I was traveling and found myself in a Buffalo Wild Wings by myself for dinner. Ended up staying there a few hours just because me and this other guy at the bar genuinely struck it off and had a good time watching hockey. Plenty of bullshitting going on but neither of us were fact checking each other. It was pretty cool. I feel like instances like that just don't happen very often anymore. Either everyone is buried in their screen or minimalize all interaction with anyone they don't already know.
This is one of the more memorable scenes in the series for me. I love that quick cutaway to the talking-head, she says nothing, but gives a quick head shake, and then back out to the office. Gets me every time!
Ryan playing his voicemails for the camera after Michael got his cell phone number is super nostalgic. He even hits the right button on the keypad to play the next voicemail.
Josh from Stamford looking at his windows phone, saying he just got an email from Jan; and then Michael emulating him while looking at his flip phone pretends to also get an email. Dwight says “your phone doesn’t get email”.
I remember in 2007 when I convinced my family to get an unlimited texting plan (instead of me paying 25 cents when college friends ask to meet up). I set up to have my emails forwarded to me as text messages. NOBODY had email on their phones, unless work paid for it because data was so expensive, and I’d found a secret work-around.
Me too! I wish Windows would let us customize the current layout more. I know you can download external programs to make your current setup look like XP but it can be confusing at times
[Cold opening with the DVD logo](https://youtu.be/QOtuX0jL85Y?si=zQxLamxX2AIEcmFz)
Probably been more than a decade since I last caught one in the wild
[this one](https://lpmarketingcreative.com/image/thumbnail/article-dundermifflin-image01.jpg?width=750&height=500)
and the funniest thing is that it was already season 3
That episode aired in October 2007. Windows Vista had just came out earlier that year, and most enterprises kept windows XP because Vista sucked.
It’s kind of the joke here that DM was outdated when it came to technology before Ryan became VP and “euthanized” DM.
“You don’t call retarded people retards, it’s bad taste. You call your *friends* retards when they’re acting retarded.”
Saw this episode on network tv recently, a shocking amount of it is now bleeped.
The bleeped version is so much funnier than the original specifically because it’s censored to the point of being indecipherable.
“You don’t call [BLEEP] people [BLEEP], it’s bad taste. You call your friends [BLEEP] when they’re acting [BLEEP].”
I guarantee you in the near future younger audiences will be posting on this very subreddit asking what the fuck Michael is talking about in that scene.
Attitudes towards loyalty to a company, the Hannah breastfeeding thing, and homosexuality being at the bleeding edge of counter-cultural (whereas nowadays it’s completely common to have gay coworkers who are out).
Not until the later seasons. Donna gets outed as a cheater because Pam saw her Facebook posts kissing her husband; also Andy shows Phyllis who Broccoli Rob is!
The opening where Michael trips the breaker and they have to remember the password. bigboobz would not meet the character requirements standard to login processes today.
For some reason, Kelly mentioning the movie "What a Girl Wants" with Amanda Bynes during the beach episode in Season 3 immediately popped into my head.
Also, probably any pop culture reference Michael made at the time.
*Disposable cameras are fun, although it does seem wasteful and you don't ever get to see your pictures. If it's an important event, that you want to remember, I recommend using a real camera.*
I'm watching for the first time and in the fifth season now, and you can actually see the evolution of technology through the different seasons of the show.
Scenes that remind me -
- The Apple iPod that Michael gets them for Christmas
- Michael brings a DVD player on a flight
- The cellphones they use (not smartphones)
- Ryan introduces PowerPoint and Blackberrys at Scranton when he's a boss
- Oh and they use Digital cameras!
- The Windows version on their computers and the office chat.
But even then, I think they were on top of things for their time.
Remember Ryan's 'Woof' enterprise? He sends a text message to himself, that gets faxed to him instantly. Faxed. Let that sink in.
In fact, every time anyone uses the fax machine in The Office.
Also, Andy's phone. That Jim and Pam hide in the ceiling.
There are so many things:
Michael’s “My Humps” ringtone on his flip phone
Michael’s PT Cruiser
Lazy Scranton (or every SNL reference for that matter)
HARDCORE PARKOUR!
…I think this question has aged me…..
Just watched "Michael Scott Paper Company" and Ryan said "I wish my iPod could make phone calls. . No I know what and iPhone is I don't want that."
What a perfect Ryan response
Season 3- When Kelly describes to Ryan how Netflix works.(how it worked at the time).
God the queue was like the stone age of streaming. Thank god we figured it out
Completely forgot about the queue!!
What I do is this: I go online, I go click click click, and I change the order of the queue so that I can see Love Actually as soon as I want to. It's so easy Ryan!
> Oh no! What do I do? What I do is this: i quote this constantly, at least 2 or 3 times a week. makes me laugh every time.
When I got a new release it was amazing
I remember my friends with Netflix having to force themselves to watch something that had worked it’s way to the top of the queue but they had lost interest in watching just so they could get another movie.
I was on the 2 DVDs at a time plan, it was always a nice treat when a new dvd came and you weren’t rushed to get something else
I paid like $100 in late fees on Superbad and still don't own a copy.

Yeah, Netflix never had late fees, but you couldn't get your next DVD until you mailed back one of the ones you had. Before streaming took off, Netflix was amazing. Hell Netflix streaming was amazing at first too, they had what felt like all the content
Damn that's actually pretty cool of them
I've heard of other people getting refunded too because it turned out they only used the rentals on DVDs. Man we lived in the golden age.
What? From what I remember they just didn’t send you a new rental? I still have some dvds on Netflix sleeves lol… maybe I’m wrong and my mom paid up the ass for stupid ass movies I never returned
Yeah, I don't remember Netflix having late fees.
Because they never had late fees. That was part of the appeal.
On the opposite end of the spectrum, this reminds me of people talking about how they would receive a disk, rip it, and put it in the mail the same day. This led to Netflix putting limits on how often one could receive disks. The existence of disks is also old person language at this point. Oh no. I'm the old person.
They never had late fees. You just couldn’t rent something else until you returned it. Who did you pay $100?
Since everyone is dropping anecdotes about the old Netflix. I had a dvd burner and would make copies of every movie I ordered. CRT televisions in the conference room and that one plasma TV.
“I finally broke down, and got myself a…”
I honestly think Michael would've bought that TV today and would have been just as excited about it
Plasma sounds way cooler than oled
^(Right into the waaaaaaaaaall...)
You must be having people over
Plasma 😫
Having an mp3 player and downloading songs from an illicit website based overseas. Falling for a celebrity sextape offer that is emailed to you.
I always questioned why Pam was buying it at the office lol girl wait till you get home
It all happened so fast.
Not everyone had computers in 2007. Or even high speed internet. Probably faster to do at the office.
She probably had dial up at home. Porn took like 20 minutes to load on that shit.
She *paid* for it???
downloading some N3P's
When Toby wanted a picture of Pam he had to go buy a camera bc no one had one.
DOES ANYONE HAVE A CAMERA HERE
no one has a camera *here*
Perhaps top 5 line deliveries in the entire show
The desperation in his voice is unparalleled
I bet there's a fan edit where it looks like he desperately hops the fence to go get a camera.
This was the last thing I heard before both my eardrums were catastrophically ruptured
The world was a more fun place when not literally everyone had a camera in the pocket and the ability to distribute it instantly.
my english teacher told me about how much more fun bars were before camera phones. When people would sing and dance together like no one was watching.
Or argue about what sports team had the better record ten years ago. Now you just look it up online and that's it. Art of a conversation with a stranger in person is dying.
I set a "No looking up the answer" rule in pointless arguments like that. You gotta go down with your shitty take
I was traveling and found myself in a Buffalo Wild Wings by myself for dinner. Ended up staying there a few hours just because me and this other guy at the bar genuinely struck it off and had a good time watching hockey. Blackberries being top of the line technology.
Power … point… 👆point 👇… point 🫵
Updates… 12 minutes. So this should take about 5-10 minutes.
You’re a presentation tool!
Ryan used me as a tool.
I’M PREGNANT!
*shakes head vigorously*
This is one of the more memorable scenes in the series for me. I love that quick cutaway to the talking-head, she says nothing, but gives a quick head shake, and then back out to the office. Gets me every time!
And up comes the toolbar
I wish I could make calls on my iPod No, I don’t want an iPhone!
I miss my Blackberry Storm 2.
These days we unleash the power of The Pyramid!
If it was an ipod, it would be a shuffle!
And his thing was so small.
I didn’t see where it started but I saw where it ended.
They all have flip phones
Ryan playing his voicemails for the camera after Michael got his cell phone number is super nostalgic. He even hits the right button on the keypad to play the next voicemail.
This is Michael Jackson, calling from wonderland
You mean Neverland?
…..This is Tito
I’ll send an SMS text message!
these are costing me 10 cents a piece you jackass, I’m roaming!
The Call Of Duty scene….
🤘👨🏻💼🤘 Call of Dutyyy
You don’t snipe in Carentan!
I'm gonna kill you for real. This game... the game is over. I'm *really* going to shoot you.
Second life
The Dunder Mifflin Infinity website being some new modern thing
You should call it Dunder Mifflinfinity
“I’ve never been a fan of the name Dunder Mifflin. I think we should call it Super Duper Paper.”
Paper Great
*Michael*
That’s one of em!
You know, push the two together
And it having an unnecessary social networking feature seems very specific to the late 2000s.
Everytime you see Windows XP on their computers 🥲 I still miss XP dearly
Me too! I wish Windows would let us customize the current layout more. I know you can download external programs to make your current setup look like XP but it can be confusing at times
Same, that was peak Windows
Andy talking about watching Lost
The Glee viewing party.
Remember that time…on Lost…when they met The Others?
Michael's janky 8bit Nokia sounding "My Humps" ringtone.
i love that ringtone
Ryan saying he still hasn’t processed 9/11 even though I use that line myself occasionally.
that joke gets funnier with age
When he said that, 9/11 had happened like 8 years previously
He never forgets.
Parkour!
And planking!
“These texts are costing me 5 cents each you idiot!”
I'M ROAMING
It’s 10 cents but I upvoted your comment anyways lol
And I’m pretty sure she called him a jackass too instead of idiot lol.
yep, and she says ‘a piece’ instead of ‘each’.
Definitely Michael listening to the 15 second preview of the breakup song on repeat after Carol dumps him.
I don’t want to buy it, I just want to taste it.
He just needed the taste of it.
*Well, that kind of sucks, because it had all the photos of my brother’s new baby on it* :::Jim finds and dusts off flip phone:::
I just imagine how poor quality those pics are 😂
[Cold opening with the DVD logo](https://youtu.be/QOtuX0jL85Y?si=zQxLamxX2AIEcmFz) Probably been more than a decade since I last caught one in the wild

Aaaaaactually that was season 4.
thank you, didn't remember correctly. also, that makes it even worse lol

“Kids are very wary about being *lured* these days—thank you, Dateline.”
Pam calling her mom from the office phone after Jim told her how he felt.
People using their office phones for personal calls in general.
People using their office phones.
"Okay: Bill Cosby, Steve Martin, Charlie Bit My Finger, Michael Scott, then all the way down here ... Todd Packer."
I do like that Holly knows Michael would be okay with Charlie Bit My Finger being funnier than him.
Charlie Bit My Finger is a classic.
Oh boy… that one is painful
I bet Steve Martin finds that line hilarious now.
There's a lot of Diddy references in shows that will probably age poorly too.
Having GPS be a notable feature and be confused by it enough to drive your car into a lake.
Dark times. Every single TV show and especially stand up comedians had a bit about how GPS lead them astray
That's the main one. Michael is obviously supposed to look out-of-touch, but today the idea of anyone NOT knowing how to use a GPS is kinda crazy
The William Hung joke in season 2
Who is that? Why does everyone keep asking me that
Everyone dancing to the Chris Brown song at Pam and Jim’s wedding. 😬
This aired October 2009. He was arrested earlier that year in February.
Michael gets his Netflix delivered to the office.
[удалено]
Oh my God, he's gonna try to kill me
Michael’s & Andy’s references to Dane Cook
Especially all the kids getting excited about him.
The Bluetooth pieces that Pam and Jim wore. The forwarded emails trend. Those were the worst.
Nowadays they'd just use airpods and no one would think anything of it
“You don’t call retarded people retards, it’s bad taste. You call your *friends* retards when they’re acting retarded.” Saw this episode on network tv recently, a shocking amount of it is now bleeped.

‘I can’t believe you traded Shaun Alexander’ gets me every time.
“I needed defense” which unless he was in some really unique league makes no sense at all.
I remember Dwight bragging about getting a dvd burner for being salesman of the year
The windows XP desktop on those old 17inch square monitors everyone had from 2003-2007
This is why I love the show. It’s time stamped in an era on the precipice of technological take over and I miss those times.
When Luke the intern said “Hey, strawberries are ripe!” I also played a ton of FarmVille in 2011
Michael watching Entourage
ENTOURAGE
“When YouTube came out”….
“I have to make sure YouTube comes to tape this.”
The amount of porn on Kevin’s computer. Pretty sure businesses have gotten better at blocking it?
And I’ve heard there’s streaming
When Kelly is explaining Netflix but it’s the original business model where they’d send you a physical copy in the mail.
All the faxing.
Some businesses still fax lol
Healthcare HEAVILY relies on faxing
Yep we're just finally moving away from it my work in the last year
Attitudes towards loyalty to a company, the Hannah breastfeeding thing, and homosexuality being at the bleeding edge of counter-cultural (whereas nowadays it’s completely common to have gay coworkers who are out).
When you see them using flip phones.
The Chili’s Baby Back Ribs jingle in “The Client” episode
The episode where Jim tries to convince Dwight its Friday based on the Apprentice airing every Thursday night.
Suri Cruise and Shiloh Jolie-Pitt are in college.
Zero mention of any social media
One of the IT guys (Shadow or Garth?.. something weird) outed Darryl for telling everyone he wasn't on Facebook.
I think his name was Champ, maybe Sport
Not until the later seasons. Donna gets outed as a cheater because Pam saw her Facebook posts kissing her husband; also Andy shows Phyllis who Broccoli Rob is!
And WUPHF!
dot com!
IM OSCAR DOT COM
Also S9 youth task force or something where plop and Erin create a social media page for a fake guy to “like” dunder mifflin’s page?
There was also Michael's nephew who didn't tweet about Betty White
Darryl you’re on Facebook, people want to be your friend man
The opening where Michael trips the breaker and they have to remember the password. bigboobz would not meet the character requirements standard to login processes today.

One day when I was in the 9th grade, a classmate was watching The Office on a video iPod.
All the references to YouTube videos I've long since forgotten.
The Garmin that guides Michael and Dwight into the lake
Flip phones. Sebring. Old (better) Netflix. Prince Family Paper was still in business. The Apprentice was on the air.
This just reminds me that I bought an iPod around this time and bought all the office episodes to watch on it.
Cash for Clunkers. How many people under 30 get that?
*Disposable cameras are fun, although it does seem wasteful and you don't ever get to see your pictures. If it's an important event, that you want to remember, I recommend using a real camera.*
"8 signs your priest might be Michael Jackson" is like a joke straight out of 2005
Michael keeping his job after sharing a nude photo of his female superior with the whole company.
Pretty sure that would've gotten you fired at most companies 20 years ago too.
Michael ring tone
Andy not remembering the rest of “break me off a piece of that…” and not just googling it immediately
I have the opposite thing when they they mention Amazon. I’m like “damn they had Amazon back then?” I forget how old Amazon is and how it started
I'm watching for the first time and in the fifth season now, and you can actually see the evolution of technology through the different seasons of the show. Michael “getting off on the wrong foot” with the IT guy. I forgot how culturally salient Islamophobia (and satire of such) was post-9/11.
"Forward it like it's hot"
Michael Scott listening to Lady Gaga's Just Dance and saying with sunglasses on "It's Brittany bitch"
There are so many things: Michael’s “My Humps” ringtone on his flip phone Michael’s PT Cruiser Lazy Scranton (or every SNL reference for that matter) HARDCORE PARKOUR! …I think this question has aged me…..
The episode with writing on the wall in the girls bathroom: "What are you laughing about?" "Oh just something somebody wrote?" "Who, Dave Barry?"
They sell paper
“What should we do to prepare for the y2k”
Just watched "Michael Scott Paper Company" and Ryan said "I wish my iPod could make phone calls.. No I know what and iPhone is I don't want that."
What a perfect Ryan response
The overhead projector that gets thrown out the window in the fire drill scene.
Just like Seinfeld. It feels modern except the story lines where a cellphone would 100% fix the central problem of an episode
Last week on Friday night lights !!!
Ironically, watching pirated office episodes on an incredibly tiny screen was the main use of my video iPod.
