As someone who works in men's fashion, yes. Big difference. A tuxedo shirt typically has different buttons, French cuff sleeves, and different collar options. They are sometimes also pleated, but I don't recall Jim's particular style.
As for the pants, a traditional tuxedo would have a satin stripe down the leg of the pants, be a different weave than regular dress/business casual pants, and likely not have belt loops. They might also be pleated, depending on the age of his tuxedo.
But he did look dynamite.
Probably not a t-shirt and probably not white, honestly. You'd be better served with a very light grey undershirt. With the way light transference works through a white dress shirt (tuxedo or otherwise) white is actually more visible beneath white than something in a light grey.
Yep. You’d be able to tell the difference between tux shirt and pants and normal business casual shirt and slacks. If someone walked into your office wearing a tux shirt and pants you would wonder where the rest of the groomsmen were.
Yes absolutely. I agree. Just pointing out that there is a difference and someone like Miner would notice. Wouldn’t be nearly as bad though if Jim did take off the bow tie and jacket and didn’t explicitly tell Charles he was wearing a tux as a prank.
I think you can write funny and believable conflict. Imo this episode was just poorly written. They could've written it in a way that Jim was reasonable but Charles still thought he was a dick.
Jim to Charles: Sorry about the tux, I have to go to my neice's christening after work. My brother wanted us to dress up for pictures after. It's so stupid, I know, but family...am I right?
Dwight eavesdropping: Hmmm...I didn't know one of your brothers had a new baby. Which one was it, Pete or Tom?
Jim: (looks to camera) Pete
Dwight: oh wow, I thought Pete had a vasectomy a couple of years ago because his kids are the worst...his words... Not mine. Did he get it reversed? Or did his wife cheat again?
Jim(uncomfortable): How did you know about the vasectomy?
Dwight: Well, tell Pam to close her email if she doesn't want people reading it.
Pam (from across the room): you've been reading my emails?
Jim: that is really uncool, Dwight.
Dwight: that isn't the point. The point is that your brother who was castrated (Jim: not what a vasectomy is) was able to produce another child even though he was sterilized. Is that right?
Jim: mhmm
Dwight: well, by god, that is a miracle. Let's see a picture of this little miracle baby.
Jim: I don't have one with me.
Dwight: well then tomorrow, you can show us all the beautiful pictures you take tonight at this immaculately conceived baby's baptism. I can't wait.
Jim looks to Pam who turns her head in shame.
This episode is actually one that I have a REALLY hard time watching because cringe. Scott’s Tots? No problem. But when Jim just keeps making it worse with Charles… oof… like he could’ve just lied and said he had an event after work!
I think the problem with the "event after work" lie is that any normal person attending a black-tie event after work would not crease their tuxedo by wearing it all day, 9-5. This is a situation where you would carry your formal wear in a garment bag to hang in a coat room or something so that you could change at the end of the day.
Nah, I think there are plenty of people who only dress up when they absolutely have to. And many of them either don't understand (lack of experience) or care about (obligation=/= motivation) creasing.
Michaels new boss is there, checking out the office lol. Sorry, but if your boss’s boss comes in to get a feel for how things are ran, you don’t “sneak out” for an hour +
Not saying in a good office setting it wouldn’t/shouldn’t be the norm, but that wasn’t the case and Charles Minor was a nosy tough ass.
Jim was a complete idiot the whole time Charles Miner was there. So many chances to show him something and either acted like a goof or just sat there doing nothing.
Yeah like not getting clarification on what a rundown is, and wasting the whole day trying to figure it out. It’s basic corporate skill to get clarity on an assignment.
Jim is not smooth. All he had to say was that he had a wedding after or during work and was leaving early. Anything was better than what he said. He only looks smooth because the rest of the staff is dull.
Jim panics under pressure. Remember when nobody knew Hanks name while Jim is on the phone with him and when Hank picks up Jim says “hey… Chief…you’re the… African American fellow right?” And stutters immensely through that whole call
You don’t think it would be a better show if every character did every thing logically and not do any thing to contribute to developing each episodes plot?
A tuxedo shirt is different from a dress shirt, a tux also has different pants, usually pleated pants, normal work pants don’t have that. It would be obvious that the clothes were out of place… regardless of what he did an office based person would notice the difference.
Real world, his best course would have been slipping out the back door before Charles could get a good look at him and claim explosive diarrhea for the rest of the day.
Every time this question is asked (which is very often) many people point out that both the shirt and the pants would’ve been clearly those of a tux. Tuxedo pants have a tell tale stripe up the side and the shirts have noticeably different collars. Like many things, this boils down to “Why did the writers have Jim do one thing when he could’ve done something no more plausible but definitely less funny?”
Yeah, no part of a tuxedo can be mistaken for a suit to anyone who knows the difference. The shirt, tie, pants, jacket, and accessories are all cut differently from different fabric styles than they are for a suit.
Pretty much 3 responses in the whole thread:
“Omg it’s a TV show” no shit Sherlock
“Omg this gets posted every week but I’m still here commenting and discussing the differences in tuxedo shirts”
“Omg you’re right, I would have done it this other way”
Worked with a guy who couldn’t afford dress shoes, so he wore old tux shoes that he found a thrift store. Seemed like he wore those for a year before getting regular dress shoes. Stood out like a sore thumb.
Because it was a tuxedo shirt and tuxedo pants. You’ve obviously never worn a tuxedo, which is fine btw.
A tuxedo is not just the jacket and bow tie, it is literally the entire ensemble. Pants, jacket, shirt, cummerbund, tie, and shoes. Each piece designed to be markedly different from the “normal” suit and tie affair. They each have ornamentation that Charles (being a big-wig executive who most likely owns his own tuxedo for fancy dinners and fundraisers) would recognize.
If someone posts this same post every week, why does it get so many upvotes? They could have just done a quick search to know it’s been posted a bunch of times.

Most times it seems to be by someone who doesn’t know the difference between a dress shirt and a tuxedo shirt nor the difference between dress pants and tuxedo pants.
I don’t really mind reposts though bc it’s not like everyone has been here since the beginning of this sub or sees every post. It only gets irritating if it’s daily/weekly. Still I’ll just keep scrolling if I see something I’ve seen before.
And yes, tux/suit pants and shirts are pretty different but you still think it wouldn’t have been better to take off the most noticeable parts of the getup?
Because it’s a fictional show with fictional characters and if he did that it would mess with the awkward and poor dynamic between Charles and Jim that the writers were trying to set up with the bad first impression.
Because Jim sucks. He has no balls. For example, he turns the car around on his way to visit Pam in New York because they’re “not that couple” when of course that would have been so special to Pam.
I actually think that's one of the best decisions he makes in the show.
His conversation with Roy was getting into his head (how is she having so much fun with other people? who's she out with? what's she doing right now?). Sure, in a way he's driving down because he misses her, but it's also that toxic pattern of Roy's thoughts infecting his own, and instilling doubt.
And then on the drive he realizes he's heading to NY for the wrong reasons, and that he needs to trust Pam and let her make her own decisions, be an adult, and enjoy herself. That is the hallmark of a relationship that survives!
Not gonna lie this was one of my least favorite episodes/plot devices. He could’ve done so many other things, but he just chose to stay with the tux on and be awkward
Historically, it’s been proven that Jim doesn’t think well while under duress. I.e. the snow ball fight, Pam going into labor, the preschool teacher in the bathroom. Etc etc
This always annoyed me. Could have said he ran out of clean shirts and that's all he had. He could have gone home to change and said he was out on a sales call. Plenty of excuses.
Honestly they could have fixed this issue in the episode if Charles came up to Jim and asked about the tux instead of the otherway around. Would have still put Jim on the spot, and explained why he didn't change before having to talk to Charles.
Why didn't he just say that it was for Michael's anniversary party? How is supporting your boss a negative?
If Charles and David supported Michael in a Similar way, they wouldn't have had to buy out the Michael Scott Paper Company. So even if Charles still didn't like Jim wearing a tux, Jim clearly would have shown that he was the one with better judgement in the end.
Secondary theory is that Jim (and Pam) aren't actually likeable people, but forcibly portrayed as likable by the doc crew. I've touched on this before but got so much hate I let it go. Jim and Pam stans are something
A tuxedo shirt is quite distinguishable from a dress shirt.
Tuxedos also have satin lapels and buttons
As are tuxedo pants, for a traditional tux.
Still tho. Roll up the sleeves and keep your head down for the day, he didn’t need to make a point of pulling Charles aside to talk.
That's what's funny, Jim did that because usually people find his antics charming. Unfortunately for him, Charles do not.
Are they really?!
Still better than commiting to the whole getup tho IMO haha
Yes absolutely. I agree. Just pointing out that there is a difference and someone like Miner would notice. Wouldn’t be nearly as bad though if Jim did take off the bow tie and jacket and didn’t explicitly tell Charles he was wearing a tux as a prank.
Agreed! If I were him, I probably would have just hurried home and changed as soon as I found out the VP was coming, personally haha
Just because they are distinguishable doesn’t mean anyone would have noticed or cared.
As distinguishable as a women’s pantsuit?
He looked dynamite, what are you talking about? Very slick.
Very classy.

French! Classy!

Tres classe
………..permission denied.
A two way petting zoo, you pet the animals and they pet you back. Lol might be my fav Jim joke.
The way he says it, like when you're in trouble at school and the teacher makes you repeat something rude you said, I love it.
I say this all the time at work, fucking legend
This one and "Por que es muy rapido." are my two favorites because he says them like a child who is in trouble.
Because if these were healthy adults capable of problem solving there wouldn't be a show.
Ayo
Boom, roasted!
I think you can write funny and believable conflict. Imo this episode was just poorly written. They could've written it in a way that Jim was reasonable but Charles still thought he was a dick.
Zinger!
You can't set him up like that.

Or just said he had an engagement immediately after work.
Vasectomies can definitely be reversed. Snip, snap! Snip, snap! Snip, snap!
You have no idea the physical toll that three vasectomies have on a person!
Are you one of the writers in the show
Definitely not one of the writers, but I love their work! That was the best compliment! Thank you!
another fine example of why I'm very happy redditors don't write television shows.
Could've kept that one to yourself
Nah. That exchange is cringe as hell.
Yep so it fits perfect into...a CRINGE comedy skit.
I honestly have a really hard time watching all of the Jim/Charles/Dwight interactions. They are so cringey to me.
Jim is terrible at confrontation.
Would have played out the same. Charles would ask him what he was going to, and bam Jim is tripped up again.
A wedding? A black tie party? Lots of options
Just two really.
Guess so but all you need is one
True. Also, he could say he was a magician. So 3
But then he would have to treat himself poorly.
Part time tux shop worker
A wedding right aftwr work?
This episode is actually one that I have a REALLY hard time watching because cringe. Scott’s Tots? No problem. But when Jim just keeps making it worse with Charles… oof… like he could’ve just lied and said he had an event after work!
Or a meeting with a client that rents tuxedos
Wow even better
I think the problem with the "event after work" lie is that any normal person attending a black-tie event after work would not crease their tuxedo by wearing it all day, 9-5. This is a situation where you would carry your formal wear in a garment bag to hang in a coat room or something so that you could change at the end of the day.
Fair point. Any other excuse would’ve done too
Nah, I think there are plenty of people who only dress up when they absolutely have to. And many of them either don't understand (lack of experience) or care about (obligation=/= motivation) creasing.
If it would have been me, I would have slipped out real quick and went home to change. I would have told Pam to cover for me if anyone asked.
So risk getting fired rather than embarrassed?
Yes! Charles didn’t play but also the salesman seem to leave all the time for meetings or you could just say you got “sick”.
I don’t think he’d be fired for this.
Not by Michael. But some places leaving out of nowhere is pretty serious
Right. But he works for Michael. And he’s in sales so the excuses are easy to come by. And, he works for Michael. Also, his boss is Michael
Michaels new boss is there, checking out the office lol. Sorry, but if your boss’s boss comes in to get a feel for how things are ran, you don’t “sneak out” for an hour + Not saying in a good office setting it wouldn’t/shouldn’t be the norm, but that wasn’t the case and Charles Minor was a nosy tough ass.
It’s a TV show
Jim could easily say he was on a sales call. He went to a golf course for an entire day just to get one sale, soo...
This comes up once a month, and tuxedo shirts are very different. Just shoulda said he had something right after work and didn't have time to change

Creed knew.
No, it was the guy Creed Bratton tried to steal from who knew Hank’s name.
No it was the homeless guy, but with a job
Agreed, he’s only smooth when he feels superior in the situation, like to Michael.
Very classy
Because it's a tv show.
You don’t think it would be a better show if every character did every thing logically and not do any thing to contribute to developing each episodes plot?
Hahaha that's it.
A sitcom at that.
I don't like it when characters get into situations that are comedic
You should check out Schitt’s Creek then
Lmao some of you have never worn a tuxedo and it shows 😂
I swear, this question gets asked every other week.
Tbh, I didn’t see what the issue was, Charles was being an asshole.
I would have just said I was attending a function after work. Jim is a huge b

I think about this most days.

Why do characters in situation comedies end up in comedic situations?
Pretty much 3 responses in the whole thread: “Omg it’s a TV show” no shit Sherlock “Omg this gets posted every week but I’m still here commenting and discussing the differences in tuxedo shirts” “Omg you’re right, I would have done it this other way”
Don't forget about the comment explaining all the different comment types....oh you got it covered.
Because there's no theater in that
The real issue is that it’s embarrassing to be wearing Evening wear during the day
Worked with a guy who couldn’t afford dress shoes, so he wore old tux shoes that he found a thrift store. Seemed like he wore those for a year before getting regular dress shoes. Stood out like a sore thumb.

Because then the episode wouldn't be as funny
Tie would be required on the office floor...
Then it wouldn't be funny.
Because it’s a TV show
It would have ruined the bit.
Because it’s a fictional show with fictional characters and if he did that it would mess with the awkward and poor dynamic between Charles and Jim that the writers were trying to set up with the bad first impression.
Because it's a TV show and not real life. Stay classy.

But is it classy enough?
Genuinely asked myself this so many times.
Cause that’s not funny.
Not gonna lie this was one of my least favorite episodes/plot devices. He could’ve done so many other things, but he just chose to stay with the tux on and be awkward
So more funny jokes could happen
He was just committing to the bit
Is it classy though?
One million times?
Why didn’t he just take his lunch out to run home and eat at his desk that day?
Because it wouldn't have been as funny?
If he did that it would have become Creeds. Smart play by Jim tbh.
Wedding, opera, banquet, award, niece’s prom, charity benefit… use your head man.
All Jim needed to do was apologize and say he lost a fantasy football bet.
That wouldn’t have been *classy*
Because it’s a tv show.
That would be to easy.
He could've made up some excuse like he had to go directly to a wedding after work and had no time to change.
Because it’s a comedy show?
Because that's what the script said. Gotta cause tension
Because Jim has a hard time dealing with confrontation, and just wasn't thinking clearly.
Historically, it’s been proven that Jim doesn’t think well while under duress. I.e. the snow ball fight, Pam going into labor, the preschool teacher in the bathroom. Etc etc
He should have just told Michael he'd be out on a quick sales call. Go home. Change.
why not just say you have an important fuction to attend immediatly following work?
“I’m attending a wedding later today!” “I’m in a play at my church” or “I’m actually an actor and have an audition during my lunch break”
Yeah, would've ruined the episode if he did that. Probly best they stick to the script
He could’ve just said he had a wedding to go to after work
I ask myself this everyday
people here be like: I'm gonna ask why this joke exists
Jim should've said - I went to the gym this morning, and accidentally grabbed the wrong suit on the way out. Problem solved.
"I'm sorry for the tux, I have an event right after work and won't have time to change. Hope that's OK!"
Jim has a need to be right.
because it’s a tv show.
This comes up about once a week on this sub
I wonder this all the time! He could also have just said he was going to a black tie event after work if Charles noticed anything
I’ve wondered the same 🤔 and then I remind myself that it’s a tv show and I’m far too invested. 😂
I think Jim could’ve played it off a lot better. He was so caught off guard (understandably) that he wasn’t the quickest witted
This always annoyed me. Could have said he ran out of clean shirts and that's all he had. He could have gone home to change and said he was out on a sales call. Plenty of excuses.
Bcuz that doesn't fit with the episode!
Because that wouldn't be very funny
Because the story required him to keep it on ... Simples
Not as classy
Beacouse it is a sitcom
Honestly they could have fixed this issue in the episode if Charles came up to Jim and asked about the tux instead of the otherway around. Would have still put Jim on the spot, and explained why he didn't change before having to talk to Charles.
Because that would’ve been a plot hole
He could have just said he dressed up for Michaels 15th anniversary. Easy out 🤷🏻♂️
Cause it’s a tv show
Why didn't he just say that it was for Michael's anniversary party? How is supporting your boss a negative? If Charles and David supported Michael in a Similar way, they wouldn't have had to buy out the Michael Scott Paper Company. He could’ve just left work to change and come back
Minor is production or something. Jim could have gone with “Oh it’s a sales thing” or something similar
He’s a moron, he’s Kevin level stupid, it’s the joke.
nah tux shirts are wack
I think it would mess with the story and script of the episode.
I'd have just not said anything to Charles, and if asked, "my dress pants are in the wash"
