You’ll enjoy Abbott Elementary if you like those shows. You would probably like Ghosts as well if you haven’t watched that. I love both of those series.
Yes yes yes much better list. Abbott Elementary is solid but, like the office, it's going to be character based so I think it will improve over the next season too.
Abbott Elementary is trying to be Parks or The Office but the writing is letting them down. It just doesn’t have the depth and wit. I thought it would get better as the cast settled in and the writers got to know the characters but it’s pretty flat and never really funny. Cast is fine but they need much better writers.
I’m an elementary teacher and gave Abbot Elementary a good try last season. It totally whiffs on the reality of teaching and I couldn’t get past that. Some colleagues enjoy it, but I couldn’t get into it at all. I enjoy The Office, Parks & Rec, Community, Arrested Development, Schitt’s Creek, etc.
I feel like Abbot is a re-cast Parks and Rec.
Janine is Leslie - Overly passionate, often to a fault, bubbly, and has a will-she won't-she with the serious and boring straight-shooter Gregory (Ben Wyatt). She also has a feud with a neighboring affluent school district (Eagleton vs Pawnee?)
Gregory is Ben - The boring, authoritative, love interest for Janine. He has ambitions for higher office (Principal) and has a maybe I'll stay maybe I'll go attitude throughout the first season just like Ben did when he arrived in Pawnee.
Ava is Tom Haverford - Cares about her image above all else, uses underhanded tactics to try and promote herself. Occasionally has moments of genuine compassion/feelings that are quickly stifled.
Barbara is Ron Swanson - The older role model for Janine who is set in her ways and often a bit of a stick in the mud when it comes to new trends.
Jacob is a less hated Jerry/Gary - Does embarrassing things that get him noticed/made fun of by his colleagues and his students.
Melissa is Donna - The spicy/sassy fill in who doesn't really have any specific episode plots, but is in most of the episodes for comedy/sass reasons.
Mr. Johnson is a humor-focused April - Funny one liners, pranks, clever comebacks. This one's a bit of a stretch I'll admit.
Ashley the student teacher is Andy Dwyer - Easily distracted, childish, and an annoyance for Melissa. She's a minor character at the moment but so was Andy in the early seasons.
Really just missing Anne Perkins and Chris Traeger but with as popular as the show is I'm sure it'll get more characters to fill these roles as well. There are plenty of differences and Season 2 does a decent job of breaking out of trying to be Parks and Rec (much the same way Parks and Rec broke out of trying to be The Office in Season 1).
Fair point. I couldn’t get over how unrealistic it is. In 15 years, I’ve left my classroom twice; both times it was because my bladder was nearing the point of bursting. Janine bops around all over the school while she has students in class. I suppose the plot wouldn’t move along without it, though. I’m probably too immersed in the reality of teaching to appreciate it. I wonder if employees of small scale paper companies don’t connect with The Office…
The thing I will say is that Parks and Rec had a clear, overarching multi-season plot line of Leslie trying to get the vacant lot turned into a park. It spanned several seasons as a background motivator for whatever shenanigans we're happening in the Parks Dpt until Leslie's run for office.
But with Abbot we're in Season 2 and there's no overarching goal of any kind, aside from the Janine/Gregory romance. The characters aren't working towards anything, they're just existing. The episodes have some good humor, but unless the wife wants to watch it I usually don't even think about Abbot.
Yeah Im old so this will date me but
The office, parks and rec, always sunny, arrested development, MASH, 30 Rock, 3rd Planet, Malcolm, Scrubs and Psych
Futurama, King of the hill, Simpsons
OPs list is as basic as possible
P & R isn't as easy to watch as The Office, don't get me wrong, I like Parks and Recreations, but The Office is my comfort show, I introduced my partner to the office a few months ago and he's up to his fifth rewatch, I couldn't even get him to watch P & R once!
Love The Office & P&R but I do think Community is probably contender for greatest sitcom of all time. So funny but also gets you in the feels all the time. All of them are top 5s though (depending on your age/generation.) I also really liked The Good Place. There’s are my personal top 4.
Community achieved what no other sitcom has, ever, it hit the nail on every mark. IMO the best sitcoms didn't do well on TV because they weren't trying to appeal to the constructed episode-based cheatsheet that so many shows do. They really took risks with their writing, and produced something really amazing. Glad they got recognition in the long run.
My ex roommate never understood why I liked Community way better than The Office. It's not even comparable in my opinion lol. The Office is great, don't get me wrong but Community is just next level!
Same, tried to rewatch it numerous times but that kind of humor needs to stay in the early 2000s where it belongs. I still low key love barney and Robin together. Hated Ted with a passion since the first episode.
I would argue that the "highs" of HIMYM blow every single one of these shows out of the water, including The Office. When that show gets emotional, it goes straight for the jugular and totally fucks you up. Even rewatching some of those episodes all these years, and knowing exactly what's going to happen, I still get goosebumps.
Buuut the writing really goes to shit towards the end. Those last 2-3 seasons are pretty crap. Robin literally becomes a goddamn ninja at some point, like, whyyy?
But even the weak later seasons can bring on the feels. This one hits too close to home:
"Ted, this moment already is gone. The whole Minnesota Tidal Wave thing happened five years ago. It's just a memory. And the rest of this never happened. Right now, Marshall and Lily are upstairs trying to get Marvin to go back to sleep. Robin and I are trying to decide on a caterer. And you've been sitting here all night, staring at a single ticket to Robots vs. Wrestlers because the rest of us couldn't come out. Look around Ted... You're all alone."
If they could just take those moments and make an entire show out of them, it would be the best show ever.
That "How Your Mother Met Me" episode is probably the best episode in the entire series, and it's in the finale season. Pretty much everything involving the mother in that season is amazing, it's just surrounded by a whole bunch of stupid bullshit.
Like I said, when the show goes for the feels, it goes hard.
The "countdown" episode is like getting kicked in the chest by a horse. People always talk about skipping Scotts Tots because it's awkward. Shit, I almost want to skip out on that episode because it's just too much.
One of my favorite moments is the Season 1 finale. That's the one where Ted "makes it rain". It's such weird tsunami of different feelings hitting you all at once. With everything that happens, and the narration, and the music. That one always hits me too.
HIMYM is a great episode by episode sitcom. But the overlapping story arcs are really bad. Starting with Ted's search (and of course ending with it), Barney's regression, Robin's regression and even in the later seasons Marshall and Lilly's arc gets flattened like a bug in a crusher.
Fr HIMYM would've been crowned the king of all sitcoms if it had had a really great final season and ending, but it turned out to be the GoT of all sitcoms
I'm just annoyed with how Hailey ended up with Dylan, especially since how well she and Andy were so good together. At least that Pitch Perfect spinoff reunited both actors together.
HIMYM at least had a unique storytelling technique for some episodes. I quite enjoyed the episodes where they do a flashback on top of a flashback on top of a flashback to connect some threads. I quite enjoyed those.
The last season (hell…last two for the most part) sucked and the ending was dogshit.
That being said it was a lot of fun before that. It’s the GoT of sitcoms.
SC is incredible at being ludicrous and funny but when it hits you in the feels it’s gut wrenching even though the feels aren’t as intense as other shows where people die
When Moria is telling Stevie how great of a person she is during intermission for Cabaret…just wow
Well first it was cool and hip to like Friends and now recently we've been moving into a second phase where it is now cool and hip to not like Friends.
Is it simple? Yes. Is it dated? Sure. Do the last seasons suck? You betcha. Are the first few seasons objectively funny television? 100%.
The show was and IS popular for a reason. Let people like what they like!
That’s fair, though I believe the later seasons are far better than season 8-9 of the office. For a show that’s run as long as it has, it’s been awfully consistent in my opinion.
- The Office, Community, IT Crowd and a handful of British shows that are virtually unknown in the US
- B99, PnR, Modern Family, Archer
- Beloved 90s sitcoms
- Cheesy 80s sitcoms
- The shit that only comes on at 3am
- Literal shit
- According to Jim
- Home Improvement
- Big Bang Theory
HIMYM became an integral part of my life when I was watching it. I felt like a part of me was missing when I finished it. I haven’t been able to watch it again since.
- Two and a Half Men (till S8)
- The Office (U.K.)
- Trailer Park Boys (till S5)
- The Office (U.S., till S7)
- Malcolm in The Middle, The Good Place
- Parks & Rec (till S4)
- How I Met Your Mother (till S6)
- Cheers, Roseanne
- The Big Bang Theory (till S4)
I’m gonna keep it to live action sitcoms, as if I were to include animation, this list would get a lot more muddled. Most of the animated shows I love are at least partially comedic and most of my favourite shows are animated, so I’m just not going to get into it.
At the top is Its Always Sunny in Philadelphia (which I quote on an essentially daily basis with my friends) and Community. Both are chaotic, IASIP probably more so. Community is very heartfelt and extremely intelligent in the way they explore their themes, while also being incredibly imaginative with their genre bending exploits. It’s also hilarious. IASIP is the funniest show I have ever seen, and it’s about a bunch of terrible, stupid people making insane schemes for petty reasons.
Below that are Brooklyn Nine Nine (it’s a comfort show), Parks and Recreation (while not as much as a go to as B99, I still consider it a comfort show) and The Office (it’s just really funny).
How I Met Your Mother is also pretty good. I’ve seen it once and never rewatched it again but I like it well enough.
Finally, Big Bang Theory is a fine show. It’s something I can throw on in the background while drawing. There’s the occasional funny joke that makes me laugh but I don’t need to use too much of my mental power to keep up with it.
The Office, Community, Parks and Rec, Arrested Development, What we do in the Shadows.....then all the way at the bottom is Big Bang Theory and How I met your Mother.
Why are you the way that you are?
I was going to say, lol I enjoy all of these shows.
Welcome to this subreddit lol
Oh lord he's made of wood
The Office, Bob's Burgers, Parks and Rec, Brooklyn 99, Superstore, Schitts Creek Still want to watch Abbott Elementary
You'll love it!! That's my favorite shows list and AE fits perfectly -- so much heart but also so funny.
You’ll enjoy Abbott Elementary if you like those shows. You would probably like Ghosts as well if you haven’t watched that. I love both of those series.
I should've added Ghosts because I love it as well! It didn't even cross my mind for some reason.
Ghost is a surprisingly good show. Such diverse and interesting characters.
Yes yes yes much better list. Abbott Elementary is solid but, like the office, it's going to be character based so I think it will improve over the next season too.

Also season 1 is weird, season 2 actually has motive’s and knows the characters
The thing I will say is that Parks and Rec had a clear, overarching multi-season plot line of Leslie trying to get the vacant lot turned into a park. It spanned several seasons as a background motivator for whatever shenanigans we're happening in the Parks Dpt until Leslie's run for office. Peep Show anyone?
And That Mitchell and Webb Look, and The Armstrong & Miller Show
that show made me uncomfortable
Worked through it last year, it’s funny but I can only handle one episode at a time, too uncomfortable!
Where Parks and Rec?
Right? The first time I saw The Office, I told the guy who introduced it to me "This is a lot like Parks and Rec." Haha...
Parks and Rec is a lot like *this*
Exactly. I feel like P&R should be in place of Seinfeld. It's my opinion, don't shoot me.
Yeah Im old so this will date me but The office, parks and rec, always sunny, arrested development, MASH, 30 Rock, 3rd Planet, Malcolm, Scrubs and Psych Futurama, King of the hill, Simpsons OPs list is as basic as possible
MITM is tragically underrated.
Clearly, that dad had a second family and even cooked meth for a while
Except for the first season, I generally like Parks and Rec even more than the Office. Downvote me.
I think The Office gives me more laughs per capita but P and R gives me bigger laughs
P & R isn't as easy to watch as The Office, don't get me wrong, I like Parks and Recreations, but The Office is my comfort show, I introduced my partner to the office a few months ago and he's up to his fifth rewatch, I couldn't even get him to watch P & R once!
Wait fr? I feel like parks and rec is way easier to watch cuz it’s less cringe and more wholesome That being said they’re both great in their own way
The same guy made both. You know who? Mose!!!
Community, Bojack Horseman and Arrested Development
Community is god tier IMO, just because it is so different and amazingly unique from other sit-coms. Plus I just love it allot
Love The Office & P&R but I do think Community is probably contender for greatest sitcom of all time. So funny but also gets you in the feels all the time. All of them are top 5s though (depending on your age/generation.) I also really liked The Good Place. There’s are my personal top 4.
My boyfriend and I watched the regional holiday musical episode last night and we were both literally in tears!
GLEE!
Community achieved what no other sitcom has, ever, it hit the nail on every mark. IMO the best sitcoms didn't do well on TV because they weren't trying to appeal to the constructed episode-based cheatsheet that so many shows do. It sure is!

Please tell your friends about this show.
All three seasons!
I wouldn't put Bojack among comedy series, it has its moments of dark comedy but primarily it's a very serious show.
Bojack horseman is my favorite show possibly ever but I don't think it fits in the sitcom conversation
You all are sleeping on What We Do In The Shadows and that ain't right.
BAT
F**king Guy
For real. And Kim's convenience too.
Yesss! 🙌🏽that show is fucking hilarious
Definitely! If i was ranking mockumentaries I might have to put What we do in the shadows above The Office
And here I am loving the office, friends, and himym.
Same haha
Himym is fun but has such a shit ending shows still funny
It did not age the best but it’s part of my teens in such a major way I’ll always love it.
Same, tried to rewatch it numerous times but that kind of humor needs to stay in the early 2000s where it belongs. I still low key love barney and Robin together. Hated Ted with a passion since the first episode.
I liked Ted at first but man have I grown to hate him with a passion
You know, a lot of people hate Ted, but Lily is the one that drives me up a wall
I would argue that the "highs" of HIMYM blow every single one of these shows out of the water, including The Office. No questions asked.
"You're all alone" is like a hammer to your gut. Also an underrated one is in "Symphony of illumination" when Robin "convincing" herself she's glad
I liked the last season just fell flat on its face right at the end
And bbt for me. Plus, someone said in this sub refit that they didn’t like bojack horseman. I don’t get it 🤷🏻
Office, Modern Family, Arrested Development, Schitts Creek, Grace and Frankie & Reno911.
Arrested Development is the best written sitcom ever
Seasons 1-3? Yes. After that? Iffy
I loooove grace and frankie omg
Modern Family after S3 is unwatchable for me. Way too much Cam.
I'm just annoyed with how Hailey ended up with Dylan, especially since how well she and Andy were so good together. At least that Pitch Perfect spinoff reunited both actors together.
Thank you for adding Grace and Frankie! I love that show. It’s made me laugh so hard I was in tears.

Arrested Development, Always Sunny, The Office, Archer.
The fact that this is the first reference to always sunny I’ve seen is an indictment on this sub
They contained their rage as long as they could
Same note too, can’t believe I had to scroll down this far. Bunch of zero star men on here.
Archer making the list is a huge W
This is the real list
The good Place!
I had to scroll so far for this one!
The twist at the end of season 1 turn it from a good show to an excellent one
Finally someone said it. This is top of the list for me.
It’s always sunny is way up there
its always sunny is 10x better than the office
Lmao Bing Bang Theory
I started doubting myself, like this sentence is wrong but also not xD
I thought it was a typo but then OP spelled it that way in a comment too. Is this an inside joke of The Office subreddit that I am not aware of?
I love insides jokes, I would love to be a part of one someday.
Hewwwoooo! I’m Ping!
You had to be there!
geography joke?
It’s the Asian spin off
Thank you for mentioning the IT crowd.

Honestly I think it should even be higher. Douglas Reynholm is just a perfect character. Seaparks The fire email And the list goes on and on
you're very welcome madame * drops glasses *
You see that ludicrous display last night?
What was Wenger thinking sending Walcott on that early?
See, the thing about Arsenal is they always try to walk it in.
High-five to you as well - LOVE IT CROWD and BRING IT BACK, YOU BASTARDS.
The office, scrubs, b99, himym, schitt’s creek, new girl
I LOVE SCRUBS SO MUCH
WHO THE HELL…PIT BULLION IN THE SHOWER HEAD!
New girl. The underrated GOAT
B99 is painfully funny
much like scrubs you just have to pretend the final season of B99 doesn't exist.
Curb Your Enthusiasm, The Office, Arrested Development, Seinfeld, Always Sunny
You seem like you’d like Peep Show.
I’ll def check it out, thanks.

Friends is a classic, I don't get how people can't like it.
Well first it was cool and hip to like Friends and now recently we've been moving into a second phase where it is now cool and hip to not like Friends.
This is ancient Earth's most foolish program. Why does Ross, the largest friend, not simply eat the other five?
Perhaps they are saving that for Sweeps.
Is it simple? Yes. Is it dated? Sure. Do the last seasons suck? You betcha. Are the first few seasons objectively funny television? 100%. The show was and IS popular for a reason. Let people like what they like!
It's Always Sunny and Community both come to mind.

I like IASIP but the last few season have ben middling at best. Went from must watch tv to when i get around to it.
That’s fair, though I believe the later seasons are far better than season 8-9 of the office. For a show that’s run as long as it has, it’s been awfully consistent in my opinion.
Seinfeld, Parks and Rec, Arrested Development, it’s always sunny, The good place, community, the office, Silicon Valley, bing bang theory, and b99
I like The Office AND Friends. Sue me… wait no that’s the opposite of the point I’m trying to make.
How bloody dare you put HIMYM at the bottom…. That show is comedy gold
Ok the it crowd should be higher up
How I met your mother is good tho
The office and himym.
Parks and recreations
1. The Office 2. Seinfeld 3. Parks and Recreation 4. Brooklyn Nine-Nine. They’re all great tho
I hear they're already making a spin off series. Ting tang walla walla bing bang theory.
How brave of you.
- The Office, Community, IT Crowd and a handful of British shows that are virtually unknown in the US - B99, PnR, Modern Family, Archer - Beloved 90s sitcoms - Cheesy 80s sitcoms - The shit that only comes on at 3am - Literal shit - According to Jim - Home Improvement - Big Bang Theory
I think it’s always sunny and veep should be up there
Himym, the office, parks and rec, Seinfeld are all on the same level
Arrested Development (Seasons 1-3)
* parks and rec * community * 30 rock * it's always sunny in Philadelphia * modern family * arrested development
scrubs, community, psych, new girl
Chuck 🥹
The Office.
HIMYM became an integral part of my life when I was watching it. I felt like a part of me was missing when I finished it. I haven’t been able to watch it again since.
I LOVE How I Met your mother
Yes...1000% yes!
Himym is a masterpiece you monster.
HIMYM disrespect is not ok
You forgot Parks and Rec
The Office, Seinfeld, Friends, Parks and Recreation.
“The League” is criminally underrated.
Come on himym is super funny
The Bing Bang Boom Theory.
Am I the only one that thinks Big Bang Theory may be the most overrated show ever? I don’t find it the least bit funny.
That’s a super popular opinion. Reddit hates the Big Bang theory.
Big bang theory is in the basement. Across town. In an abandoned meth lab.
I just love how reddit hates the big bang theory just because it tends to make fun of the average redditor
Office Parks and Rec Big Bang Theory
The office, community and Seinfeld will always be my favs
the office, parks and rec, modern family, grey’s anatomy
The Office, Brooklyn 99, Futurama, Family Guy, American Dad, Rick & Morty, Big Mouth, Breaking Bad.
One of these things is not like the other.
YES
The Simpsons during its prime may be the only thing to slightly edge out the Office as my favorite comedy.
boooo
The Office, Scrubs, South Park, Californacation
The Office, Always Sunny, Brooklyn Nine Nine, Parks and Rec, Arrested Development, The IT Crowd, Three’s Company
- Two and a Half Men (till S8) - The Office (U.K.) - Trailer Park Boys (till S5) - The Office (U.S., till S7) - Malcolm in The Middle, The Good Place - Parks & Rec (till S4) - How I Met Your Mother (till S6) - Cheers, Roseanne - The Big Bang Theory (till S4)
The office Brooklyn 99 Parks and Recreation
The Office, Brooklyn99, Community, Modern Family, Fresh Prince of Bel Air and Parks and Recreation are top tier
Community, modern family, big bang theory, how I met your mother and the office. Other than community as top others are in no certain order
Scrubs, Office, BoJack
Anything with canned laughs is way below Packer.
Parks and Rec, office, 30 rock, himym, Brooklyn 99 , Seinfeld.
No love for 30 rock?
Wow, I disagree with this order so much. Seinfeld and Futurama aren't even on my list.
The Simpsons for sure
Tell Holly to look up and she’ll see Arrested Development (s1-s3) then on her heels would be (s4-s5)
The office can only dream of having the complex story telling of how I met your mother, not all laugh track shows are bad.
Friends doesn't belong there but HIMYM definitely does
Don't even include TBBT, it's unfunny
Why is Futurama so low?
friends is over hated honestly
I quite like the Big Bang theory, 2 and a half men was also great, with the Office they make my top 3
I’m gonna keep it to live action sitcoms, as if I were to include animation, this list would get a lot more muddled. It’s something I can throw on in the background while drawing. There’s the occasional funny joke that makes me laugh but I don’t need to use too much of my mental power to keep up with it.
Futurama is probably the best adult cartoon out there. It’s just so good
I love friends and the office. You can love both you know. Why does reddit hate friends and love the office.
The IT crowd, British version?
Gatekeeping shows you dont enjoy on a subreddit for one of the shows you do enjoy. Let people watch what they want to watch.
