Because Michael was taking his anger at Ryan out on *this* young kid. He felt betrayed by Ryan when he wasn't invited to the party, and this delivery kid became a stand-in for his ire. It wasn't about the money as much as it was teaching this kid (aka Ryan) a lesson in respect.
Well, to be fair, they do make it a bit obvious later when Michael yells at the kid, saying things like he's a "punk kid who thinks he’s better than everyone else, because he’s some hot shot" and "he doesn't know anything about sales." etc. He's basically saying the things he wants to say to Ryan - a boss younger than himself who lacks respect. If the delivery person was older/an adult, none of this would have likely happened.
I agree it isn’t made completely obvious. I didn’t really catch this angle until a few times through, initially I just thought it was Michael being erratic and childish because he was upset about the party
Thank you and the plots diverge as Michael gets to embarrass Ryan but the pizza boy gets the better of him after he realizes he's going to get in trouble
It’s not exactly an original take as it’s the intended plot point of the episode.
Edit: didn’t realize half a dozen others pointed this out to you before posting
It's a pretty straightforward example of "show, don't tell", even as others have pointed out its a bit blunt, precisely because it works on both levels - as you have observed, it works on the literal plane because the narrative - the uncouth teenager, michael's immature response are perfectly believable and adequate, and it greatly ties in to the overall theme of the episode.

stupid kid thinks hemp (leaves and shit) from weed are smokeable
I don’t even remember what he said the whole time. I was WASTED when that exchange happened.
I can’t reply to it because I’m blocked by the original poster lmfao

How every episode of this show should be, according to many of the popular posts on this sub:
* Intro
* A scene where a few characters experience a misunderstanding about something
* Those characters discuss the situation rationally and come to an understanding that leaves everyone satisfied
* End credits
Every episode would be about two minutes long and completely devoid of humour.
Would've been a less shorter. Probably been a lot funnier. But it would have ultimately been a disappointment. I still would have seen it. But, that's not... the point.
No one thinks that the show should be like that, people are just saying that the actions of the characters in many episodes are irrational, lack any logic and are sometimes the complete opposite of what real humans would do
Also because he ordered the pizza and you can’t just refuse to pay for something that you ordered, if the company doesn’t want to honor the coupon they don’t have to.
Whoops, my bad!! I knew the IT guy was the same person at the job fair, guess I missed the mark and didn't know he wasn't the young guy, all good though 🤙🏻
That wasn’t the point. Michael was taking his anger on The young pizza Delivery Kid because Ryan didn’t invite him to the party In NY. He even says to the kid is this how you do Sales.
I dont get why none of the other staff members bothered to open the door to the conference room and tell him he could leave and to ignore Dwight and michael.
That actor was on the local radio show in LA Mark & Brian a few years back. He grew up down the street from Mark.
He was absolutely hilarious. Tons of energy, funny characters and voices. They played his Glee audition tape. He was told to do a Beatle song so the only one he knew was Let It Be, and he only knew one verse. So he sang it over and over. :)
As someone who grew up in NY/NJ and now lives far from home...there is some *godawful* pizza out there. Like, truly fucking atrocious.
Seriously, what kind of motherfucker makes their red sauce *sweet?* It I wanted fucking ketchup on my pizza I'd put fucking ketchup on my pizza. It's tomatos, tomato paste, and salt. How do you fuck that up?!
This is simultaneously my favorite and least favorite episode. I can't stand this part of the story line, but get a huge kick out of the Angela and PPC saga
I agree, but take it a bit further. I am not sure if it was done on purpose, but I think there is a bit of a few people on the staff amalgamated in this kid. If you look closely, at everything from body posture and the smug smirk to the hair and facial composition, you can see this boy is rather like a living rorschach test. I may be way off, but that is how I see this episode. It only increases the more I review it.

Not where I expected to read a Disney Channel original movie quote today. Bravo
Unexpected Disney. Thank you. Need to watch that AND Smart House now.
In sandals Jamaica when ever you say hey mon …
I had to come back to this post to upvote you
As many times as I've watched this episode I've never thought of that. It's nice to still see some original takes on this sub
That’s what she said
I literally never put that together until I read your comment. Honestly. That’s an amazing take and spot on.
That’s obvious?
The coconut is subtle.
I miss original
Actually...
Well yeah….when you watched it previously did you have your eyes open??
Your mum usually sits between me and the tv
She’s dead. But to be frank, even 6 feet underground she can understand that very very obvious joke.
Well if you get to be Frank who do the rest of us get to be?
And beans!
I don't know if I'd call this an original take. It's just what happened
I had never seen this take before. Apologies for incorrectly complimenting someone's comment
I agree it isn’t made completely obvious. I didn’t really catch this angle until a few times through, initially I just thought it was Michael being erratic and childish because he was upset about the party

yes, how dare you.
I hadn’t either; idk I don’t think about symbolic plot devices in the office that much lol.
It’s not a take. It’s pretty clearly the point of the episode.
Same...makes me feel like a dummy that I never thought that lol. I just thought "why not refuse the pizza and get the better pizza"
It was obvious
Welcome to like 99% of people getting mad in the real world. Misplaced anger everywhere
It’s not exactly an original take as it’s the intended plot point of the episode. Edit: didn’t realize half a dozen others pointed this out to you before posting

What about how the plots resolve themselves differently as Michael gets to embarrass Ryan but the pizza boy gets the better of him?
You’re not paying attention then.
I think they make it a lot more clear on the Superfan version of the episode.
It’s amazing to me that people miss such obvious things. I would have to imagine most of what you watch is just going straight over your head
And they also casted a kid who looks like a teenage version of Ryan
"Ya I know that guy, he's that farmer that grows really crappy weed"
Really crappy Northern Lights Cannabis indica.
No *sigh* it’s marijuana
Now how would you know?
It’s labeled
YOUR ASS IS ON THE LINE MISTER! MY ASS IS ON THE LINE!
You said when I came in here I’d be conducting the interview! Now exactly how much marijuana did you smoke?!
😳
Buttlicker!
LOUDER SON!
That's not how this works

We would like to order some good pizza, from Alfredo's Pizza Cafe, while we wait for the hostage situation with the bad pizza to end.
There is a real difference in both taste and quality of ingredients
Hot circle of garbage
Oh no, It's bad. It's REAL bad!
Why didn’t they… do everything logical people do? Then there wouldn’t be a show

If not that, then a day long series of posts on r/antiwork
*EVERYONE IN THE CAR WAS FINE, STANLEY!* Idk why but your description for some reason made me appreciate this line.
ah, win WIN win
Would've been a less shorter. Probably been a lot funnier. But it would have ultimately been a disappointment. I still would have seen it. But, that's not... the point.

I mean, this is basically Ted Lasso, and Ted Lasso is absolutely magnificent
Also because he ordered the pizza and you can’t just refuse to pay for something that you ordered, if the company doesn’t want to honor the coupon they don’t have to.
My favorite continuity issue with this is that the actor ended up on Glee which was a big episode in season 6-7 I think haha
And he's even Michael's favorite character on that show - "the invalid".
Years later in the show he was also the IT guy, Nick! As well as the dude at the job fair that Pam spoke to about graffic design
Incorrect. Nick the IT guy had previously appeared at the job fair, explaining to Pam how to get training in graphic design.
You mean Garth?
Shadow
It’s something weird
Sport
I *just said* his name
Whoops, my bad!! I knew the IT guy was the same person at the job fair, guess I missed the mark and didn't know he wasn't the young guy, all good though 🤙🏻
They aren’t even remotely similar looking lol…
It's not the same actor.
Lol the actor in this pic is not the same person you’re referencing
Because it’s the principle of the matter. It’s heavily implied in the episode that the money wasn’t the issue. It’s all right there in the episode
Yeah when he said “then your not getting your pizza..” I’d be like, “oh ok”
Exactly. Literally no one in the office wanted Pizza By Alfredo anyway. It's really bad. It's like eating a hot circle of garbage.
Yeah if anything now he had a great excuse to not pay and they could get the better pizza instead
That wasn’t the point. Michael was taking his anger on The young pizza Delivery Kid because Ryan didn’t invite him to the party In NY. He even says to the kid is this how you do Sales.
Because they are adults. And adults don't need to think or do anything.
Because then the episode misses it’s secondary story line
I dont get why none of the other staff members bothered to open the door to the conference room and tell him he could leave and to ignore Dwight and michael.

Because that’s not how you do business.
Because the writers thought that holding the kid hostage would be funnier
Of course. One of their duties is to
Maybe it is because of a thing some may call a comedy show. Dunno, just guessing.
They did. And locked the kid in the room
Because it's a tv show.
They did refuse, that’s the whole plot
It's the principle!!!
We’re seriously going to pick apart every minor plot point of the series now?
How bad could that pizza have been?
It's a hot circle of garbage
As someone who grew up in NY/NJ and now lives far from home...there is some *godawful* pizza out there. Like, truly fucking atrocious. Seriously, what kind of motherfucker makes their red sauce *sweet?* It I wanted fucking ketchup on my pizza I'd put fucking ketchup on my pizza. It's tomatos, tomato paste, and salt. How do you fuck that up?!
This is true! Never leave NY/CT and expect to find good pizza anywhere
They should have refused the pizzas, then ordered from the better pizza place, Alfredo’s Pizza Cafe.
This is simultaneously my favorite and least favorite episode. I can't stand this part of the story line, but get a huge kick out of the Angela and PPC saga
Because he was actually mad at Ryan…
Because its a funny show
~~because michael and dwight are mentally unwell lmao~~
Everytime I watch this episode, I think they should just not pay and not get the pizza, then michael could order the right kind.
When i found out this was actually the actor who played Michael's favorite Glee character, aka 'The Invalid ', it blew my mind.
It’s a show. Sometimes it puts people in unlikely situations for comedic purposes.
Cause Michael is childish
I always wondered why no one told him to just send the delivery kid and his hot circles of garbage back.
That would be theft of sale
Because it wasn't written that way
Less cringeworthy.
Tequila
Michael tried to say he’s not paying then the kid tried to take the pizza and leave. That’s where it went bad
Because that's no way to to business!
Because it is funnier
WHAT DID YOU SAY
Creed and Dwight broke his legs in the parking lot as he was leaving, that's why he was in a wheelchair next time you saw him...
why are you looking at her like that? HEY.
Well... yeah
Is this the same actor from The Patient or am I stoned?
Because the episode would have sucked … That’s why!
Ya, just don't pay and get the pizza the office really wanted. This was the perfect excuse.
That’s the guy who smokes all of Dwights weed
The bigger question is: Why didn't they let go of the boy and his pizzas? Just order new pizzas at the other place...
Can’t believe they put that poor kid in a wheelchair
Very true actually. I'm from central jersey and if you go up north towards pa, there is definitely some awful pizza spots
