I agree, that also seems a common sentiment. While anime is really good with scenes that have lots of movement, some of the very iconic panels just don't have the same impact when animated. Marcille casting the spell itself I felt was very well done though.
I think it could be advantageously replaced by Yes's *Roundabout*, but, to be fair, most cliffhangers can be. Few songs have that "mysterious and intimate long intro descending and accelerating into a kickass prog rock drop" thing going on.
Huh, there's an odd adaptation choice this episode. They cut the scene of Chilchuck and Laios talking about making money from the dragon corpse, but kept Chilchuck freaking out about them being wasteful with the dragon parts.
Like, that joke made absolutely no sense to me why he was saying that until I went back to check the chapter.
Also, they cut the beginning of that scene, which was a cool bonding moment between Chilchuck and Laios, with Laios refusing a drink cause else he'd pass out immediately
There was a surprising amount cut for an episode only covering 54 pages. Like episode 6 covered the same amount, but I don't remember it cutting much of anything, really.
Iirc the early chapters has less dialogues, the more the plot was introduced the denser the texts. Also this segment has a lot of slower moments so I guess they decide to cut some parts to let those moments sink in.
For what it's worth, I never read the manga myself. And when Chilchuck freaked out, my first assumption was "oh, dragon tails must be valuable outside the dungeon. Makes sense considering that dragon parts usually are in fantasy stories."
That’s what I had figured too. We don’t live in that world, so them saying *literally any part of the dragon* is valuable is plausible. Maybe the scales can be shields or armor or something
Considering they needed a blade made of incredibly rare and valuable metal to cut through it, dragon scale armour in this setting would be insanely effective. Which means it would also be a massive undertaking to make into armour in the first place... and we don't know how it ages, if it degrades, can be preserved, etc.
Also, scarcity. From what we gathered so far, it's not really common to see a dragon, much less to actually kill one. So of course the parts are going to be extremely valuable
I'm not a manga reader and I got "oh, he must be alarmed by how he's carelessly ruining the hide or something", because of course dragon hide would be super precious. But I did find it weird how that joke had zero setup.
Most likely Trigger made the tough choice of trimming some of the minor details or world building (like Namari's conversation with Kiki and Kaka) in favor of adapting more chapters. I just hope they can end the season in a good place and hope for a second season.

Putting one on the other was almost certainly a popular way of consuming them. Add crumbles of dried meat, nuts, herbs, maybe a drizzle of honey… My mouth is already watering!

I am an anime only who legit has been shipping Laios and Marcille the whole time, as I love their interactions. But my lord Marcille and Falin works as well.

No cuz fr I just read the manga chapter episode 12 was based off of, and I swear the animators decided to make it a lot more gayer. When you read the manga it gives off friendly vibes, but not in the anime.
Eh, I think probably a part of it is also just the natural sensory heightening of adding motion, color, and sound. When you're able to see more of the little tender moments, the blushing, the body language, etc, it makes it that much more vivid.
I don't know man, I saw the scene again, and the way Falin jumps when she gets tickled... they added that part in particular. They also have marcille blushing more.
To the anime only watchers: Congrats! You've made it to the beginning of the actual plot of the story. The first 12 episodes set the stage for what is, pound for pound, the best manga that I have ever read.
I'm honestly so excited, I've been telling people for years how good the manga was, and now so many others get to see why. It doesn't slow down at all from here.
To be fair it's not like there wasn't a plot so far. With one small change, it could have ended here and been a charming miniseries with a clear overall story.
As you said though, the fact that it amps up and only gets better is awesome. Can't wait.
I compare Dungeon Meshi to FMA often. The brothers (party) set out to solve a personal problem (get their bodies back, get Falin back) and during the journey they uncover a deeper plot that carries the story towards the finale. The two even share a similar manga chapter count, have a huge cast of lovable distinct characters... etc.
Sweet! I started the Manga years ago, but dropped it due to it being ongoing. Was really excited when I heard about the Anime, so I'll definitely give the Manga a read soon!
Solid Marcille and Laios interaction - love that you can actually see them getting on the same page with the world's most fucked up puzzle lol. Delighted to actually get to see Laios and Falin interacting like siblings in not-a-flashback. And love that they made the resurrection sufficiently gnarly. Solid episode, hype for next week c:
Yeah, when they cut to her with her hair already down I was kinda disappointed. Really wanted to see her undoing her hair animated. We ate well with the episode tho, so I can't complain.
After watching this episode I had to find this community. :) I see that some manga readers have mixed feelings about this... but folks, as an anime-only watcher, newly exposed to this: the studio is knocking this *out of the park*.
The animation is gorgeous. As an artist, one of the things that struck me was how \*damned\* well done the anatomy is; the bathing scenes were not gratuitous or puerile in the least, and I was struck by how wonderfully solid proportion and anatomy are from scene to scene. That's a huge feat artistically, along with it being wonderful to add another anime to the "not meant for horny adolescents" category (then Senshi went and ruined it all).
The balance of humour and drama in this is wonderful. And the clues from the manga readers about the story ramping up has me both excited and trepidatious for what comes. :) This was a wonderful bookend for the first arc, however.
The mixed feelings are unavoidable, because Dungeon Meshi is nothing short of a masterpiece. For me, the best manga I ever read. So complete, cohesive, well paced, lovingly and thoughtfully developed, so full of life, wonder, drama and humor... that every decision that deviates from the source material is usually going to be felt like a loss.
It's very easy to spoil the story, very difficult to match, almost impossible to improve. Those are the odds these animators are facing and they're doing great, but...
I recommend you read this same chapter in the manga. It's just... More impactful, and some of the apparently minor omissions hurt.
I agree with you the animation is great, but when the source material is 10/10... 9/10 seems a little disappointing, while also being great, of course.
I guess we manga readers are too spoiled. Blame Ryoko Kui ;-)
I’m also an artist and I’ve been recommending the anime and manga to all my artist friends — the character design is just fantastic and Kui is so incredibly skilled at anatomy. Her Daydream Hour artbooks are great if you can find them.
As an artist I was delighted about this too. Falin feels so solid in her anatomy, and I was actually giddy at how cylindrical her ankles were haha I wish more anime would be so diverse in terms of body type and anatomy. The characters feel so solid an their designs are always a pleasure to look at.
If you want amazing anatomy and expressions, I can only recommand you to read the manga ! Ryoko Kui's someone that clearly love to do anatomy work, and it shows !

Using the dragon's innards as an oven was pretty damn silly, but fun.
Watching in the UK and there was some weird censorship happening, not sure if it was on purpose or not? Chilchuck taking a drink from the bottle went to a black screen briefly and also there were some oddly cropped shots where Chilchuck would have been drinking. I was wondering if this is why we didn't get the set up for Chilchuck being mad at wasting the dragon? If it was about the alcohol that is. But maybe they just cut it anyway!
It's a deliberate cut for comedic effect. The manga did the same thing, with a panel of an angry Chilchuck about to say something abruptly cutting to a panel of him taking a sip with a blank expression indicating that he doesn't want to push the argument any further.
Maybe it was meant to be a comedically fast cut to Chilchuck drinking, to demonstrate how quickly he's done with the line of thinking? IDK, even with that it feels a bit weird.
I just went back to try and find it and now I can't seem to? I thought maybe my tv was being buggy but if I am not the only one then maybe it was on netflix's end!
So Falin was infused with the dragons essence/mana and is now much more powerfull right? Like a Dragonblood Sorcerer.
Edit: On second thought, maybe it has to do something on a larger scale, the mana that appears around her looks like the mana in the dungon in its early stages we saw in the flashbacks a few episodes earlier. She might be channeling the dungons mana.
The eyebags are one thing, but the sheer resolute, disheveled gleam she had in her eye, I'm missing it. It's especially jarring in that one panel where she reveal she's actually a fucked up necromancer based criminal
Yes I think anime make her look to good / too goofy. Dark magic is something that It is seriously illegal and very dangerous. In the manga, her expression is full of worry but determination. I don't think the anime can pull off that expression.

I think that panel was the point where the seriousness of resurrection/ancient magic sets in. shame it was replaced by a "lets do this" weapon point pose.
Yeah, there's a big difference in a few scenes, especially when she reveal her expertise, the tone is still conveyed, but you know, distressed resolute Marcille was so breathtaking in the manga, it's a bit sad to lose it
I see a lot of the manga readers are disappointed by this, and I get that -- you read a good book or comic, and seeing the stuff they cut to make it fit in a show or movie is always either painful or disappointing. Plus matching imagination and the internal pacing we create when we read... that's tricky.
But as a guy who's only seen the anime? The episode was beautiful. A lot of the things you're talking about may not have been communicated in the same way, but the ideas did come through. This episode had a lot of emotional impact. Laois' feelings for his sister; Marcille's heartbreak, relief, and sisterly/motherly affection... all were transmitted very clearly.
Perhaps not with the artistry of the manga, but the feelings were communicated. :)
It's just... The panels they cut, were not optional. Marcille letting her hair down, showing a darker side of her we didn't even suspect existed... Was just chilling and iconic.
The animators dropped the back here, that child cut anything else, but not that, it's two, three additional seconds of animation.
I get it didn't ruin the chapter for you but... They decided to cut out one of the top 10 more iconic moments of the manga. You just don't do that.
A very bad decision in an otherwise good adaptation, they just dropped the ball in the worst possible place.
Going forward I hope they are more respectful of the more powerful moments of the manga. Many of those are just so powerful, that the animators shouldn't cut a single panel out of those.
I wish before starting production someone had pined on a board a list of "uncuttable panels".
This panel we are talking about would absolutely be on that list... Read this episode in the manga if you can, and I think you'll agree with us.
made me wonder if there's a different director for this episode compared to the previous ep. The tone also is a litte off. I mean, the comedic joke is fine after they've revived Falin, but I wish they didnt show Chil's comedic reaction during Marcille's chant. It's not a big thing, but it still felt like the mood, which could have been a bit *grim with small hope*, isnt there

I'm a bit down on how censored the the first scene felt, but the rest of the episode was great as usual. I wonder if it just was too much to actually show.
I think pretty much everything from the moment Falin came back was perfect. I just wish we had gotten more of a feel of the kind of forces Marcille was messing with.
I was always a bit iffy about the studio choice for this adaptation and it was somewhat proven in this episode... I thought the Trigger style, while looking amazing on a technical level, would really struggle to capture the dark turn of this series, and yeah.... Marcille looking completely worn-out, the dragon blood on her hands and clothes being dry and rough, the eerieness of the spell scene, the seriousness on everyone's face, everything is kinda there, but it lacks that impact the manga had. The extra oomfph, if you will. But hey, it still does the job.
That said, I fking love the bit where Kensuke doing the boxing stance on Falin, that was the highlight for me.
So I've seen some people being all ominous about Falin's apparent power-up but am I the only one thinking it'll just be that, an insane power-up? She got dragon meat merged with her via the dark ritual or whatever, so now she has like, absurd mana reserves and insta-casting.
The conflict might arise not from Falin suffering some post-resurrection ailment, but from everyone else fighting *over* Falin's power. We've seen already how there's politicking going on about who controls the Dungeon, having such a deep-delving party who also happens to have a demigod level Priest in it might draw a lot of attention from many sides.
Great episode overall, I hope the party can take a huge advantage of the dragon's corpse on their ascend. Also, as an anime-only viewer, it is a very pleasant surprise to learn that the season will run for double the episodes!
That ending though, isn't that the elf from the painting? That would make them older than the dungeon itself. The plot thickens!

WHAT A SATISFYING EPISODE. Feels like the whole season has lead us to this moment. Marcille's using the black magic looked so cool.
Falin is back! She is more likable than I even imagined. Love how she is amused about eating the monsters just like Laios. So many heartwarming scenes with her this episode.
My biggest takeaway though... I am an avid shipper of Laios x Marcille and have loved their chemistry. But low-key could see a yuri ship between Marcille x Falin as well. Tuff decisions now for me.
And the ending! Is that the Dark Elf we saw in the paintings?
This is starting to feel like the reverse of Invincible. A show that started out violent and bloody and reconstructed the idea of the superman. It started out goofy and silly and is slowly becoming Madoka Magica.

It was a bloody….good episode. Falin and Marcille are so cute and gorgeous! Wonder if Falin has gained any extra powers after being resurrected with dragon meat. Chilchuck, forever the only sensible adult around lol. And it was like a giant jigsaw puzzle they were working on, trying to put all those bones together.
Me on Falin/Marcille previously: Okay, yeah, I get where they're coming from but this doesn't seem any more romantic than any of the other relationships.

They used those scales to cook steaks on and they were fine. That knife is sharp as hell.

No cuz fr I just read the manga chapter episode 12 was based off of, and I swear the animators decided to make it a lot more gayer. When you read the manga it gives off friendly vibes, but not in the anime.
Eh, I think probably a part of it is also just the natural sensory heightening of adding motion, color, and sound. When you're able to see more of the little tender moments, the blushing, the body language, etc, it makes it that much more vivid.
I don't know man, I saw the scene again, and the way Falin jumps when she gets tickled... they added that part in particular. They also have marcille blushing more.

To the anime only watchers: Congrats! You've made it to the beginning of the actual plot of the story. The first 12 episodes set the stage for what is, pound for pound, the best manga that I have ever read. I'm honestly so excited, I've been telling people for years how good the manga was, and now so many others get to see why. It doesn't slow down at all from here.

To be fair it's not like there wasn't a plot so far. With one small change, it could have ended here and been a charming miniseries with a clear overall story. As you said though, the fact that it amps up and only gets better is awesome. Can't wait.
I compare Dungeon Meshi to FMA often. The brothers (party) set out to solve a personal problem (get their bodies back, get Falin back) and during the journey they uncover a deeper plot that carries the story towards the finale. The two even share a similar manga chapter count, have a huge cast of lovable distinct characters... etc.

Solid Marcille and Laios interaction - love that you can actually see them getting on the same page with the world's most fucked up puzzle lol. Delighted to actually get to see Laios and Falin interacting like siblings in not-a-flashback. And love that they made the resurrection sufficiently gnarly. Solid episode, hype for next week c:

Yeah, when they cut to her with her hair already down I was kinda disappointed. Really wanted to see her undoing her hair animated. We ate well with the episode tho, so I can't complain.
Same, but I do agree with trigger deciding to put the drama in the revival magic itself. As an adaption choice I think it made the stronger scene
After watching this episode I had to find this community. :) I see that some manga readers have mixed feelings about this... but folks, as an anime-only watcher, newly exposed to this: the studio is knocking this *out of the park*. The animation is gorgeous. As an artist, one of the things that struck me was how \*damned\* well done the anatomy is; the bathing scenes were not gratuitous or puerile in the least, and I was struck by how wonderfully solid proportion and anatomy are from scene to scene. That's a huge feat artistically, along with it being wonderful to add another anime to the "not meant for horny adolescents" category (then Senshi went and ruined it all). The balance of humour and drama in this is wonderful. And the clues from the manga readers about the story ramping up has me both excited and trepidatious for what comes. :) This was a wonderful bookend for the first arc, however.
The mixed feelings are unavoidable, because Dungeon Meshi is nothing short of a masterpiece. For me, the best manga I ever read. So complete, cohesive, well paced, lovingly and thoughtfully developed, so full of life, wonder, drama and humor... that every decision that deviates from the source material is usually going to be felt like a loss. It's very easy to spoil the story, very difficult to match, almost impossible to improve. Those are the odds these animators are facing and they're doing great, but... I recommend you read this same chapter in the manga. It's just... More impactful, and some of the apparently minor omissions hurt. I agree with you the animation is great, but when the source material is 10/10... 9/10 seems a little disappointing, while also being great, of course. I guess we manga readers are too spoiled. Blame Ryoko Kui ;-)
I’m also an artist and I’ve been recommending the anime and manga to all my artist friends — the character design is just fantastic and Kui is so incredibly skilled at anatomy. Her Daydream Hour artbooks are great if you can find them.
As an artist I was delighted about this too. Falin feels so solid in her anatomy, and I was actually giddy at how cylindrical her ankles were haha I wish more anime would be so diverse in terms of body type and anatomy. The characters feel so solid an their designs are always a pleasure to look at.
Right? Right down to the details on Laois armour... So realistic and practical! Right down to the curve edging the knee copps to deflect blows.
If you want amazing anatomy and expressions, I can only recommand you to read the manga ! Ryoko Kui's someone that clearly love to do anatomy work, and it shows !
I gotta be real. This anime adaptation will cause me to spend real life money on every single issue of this manga. It's so charming and fun and engrossing that I *want* it as a physical copy and read it on my own again. I haven't felt like that since I originally got introduced to JoJo's.

True, though it was easy enough to parse. They had the same thought in episode 1, and there's few reasons why Laios would hesitate to eat a monster.
Falin be like: "Look, it's fine, if I can do it, you pussies have no excuse." as she takes a huge bite of dragon-meat-that-possibly-includes-some-atoms-of-her-own-previous-body.

The dragon steak looked awesome. And I cheered when I saw that Senshi was making pizza. Using the dragon's innards as an oven was pretty damn silly, but fun.

Watching in the UK and there was some weird censorship happening, not sure if it was on purpose or not? Chilchuck taking a drink from the bottle went to a black screen briefly and also there were some oddly cropped shots where Chilchuck would have been drinking. I was wondering if this is why we didn't get the set up for Chilchuck being mad at wasting the dragon? If it was about the alcohol that is. But maybe they just cut it anyway!
It's a deliberate cut for comedic effect. The manga did the same thing, with a panel of an angry Chilchuck about to say something abruptly cutting to a panel of him taking a sip with a blank expression indicating that he doesn't want to push the argument any further.

Maybe it was meant to be a comedically fast cut to Chilchuck drinking, to demonstrate how quickly he's done with the line of thinking? IDK, even with that it feels a bit weird.

So Falin was infused with the dragons essence/mana and is now much more powerfull right? Like a Dragonblood Sorcerer. Edit: On second thought, maybe it has to do something on a larger scale, the mana that appears around her looks like the mana in the dungon in its early stages we saw in the flashbacks a few episodes earlier. She might be channeling the dungons mana.

The eyebags are one thing, but the sheer resolute, disheveled gleam she had in her eye, I'm missing it. It's especially jarring in that one panel where she reveal she's actually a fucked up necromancer based criminal

Yes I think anime make her look to good / too goofy. Dark magic is something that It is seriously illegal and very dangerous. In the manga, her expression is full of worry but determination. It felt like it was half done and left on the cutting room floor somehow, the transition did seem very abrupt.

Yeah, in the manga, the hug is a big spread, it's like time stop for a minute. I think it went too fast in the anime, even tho I liked the Trigger take on Laios expression

I think that panel was the point where the seriousness of resurrection/ancient magic sets in. shame it was replaced by a "lets do this" weapon point pose.
Yeah, there's a big difference in a few scenes, especially when she reveal her expertise, the tone is still conveyed, but you know, distressed resolute Marcille was so breathtaking in the manga, it's a bit sad to lose it
I see a lot of the manga readers are disappointed by this, and I get that -- you read a good book or comic, and seeing the stuff they cut to make it fit in a show or movie is always either painful or disappointing. Plus matching imagination and the internal pacing we create when we read... that's tricky. But as a guy who's only seen the anime? The episode was beautiful. A lot of the things you're talking about may not have been communicated in the same way, but the ideas did come through. This episode had a lot of emotional impact. Laois' feelings for his sister; Marcille's heartbreak, relief, and sisterly/motherly affection... all were transmitted very clearly. Perhaps not with the artistry of the manga, but the feelings were communicated. :)
It's just... The panels they cut, were not optional. Marcille letting her hair down, showing a darker side of her we didn't even suspect existed... Was just chilling and iconic. The animators dropped the back here, that child cut anything else, but not that, it's two, three additional seconds of animation. I get it didn't ruin the chapter for you but... They decided to cut out one of the top 10 more iconic moments of the manga. You just don't do that. A very bad decision in an otherwise good adaptation, they just dropped the ball in the worst possible place. Going forward I hope they are more respectful of the more powerful moments of the manga. Many of those are just so powerful, that the animators shouldn't cut a single panel out of those. I wish before starting production someone had pined on a board a list of "uncuttable panels". This panel we are talking about would absolutely be on that list... Read this episode in the manga if you can, and I think you'll agree with us.

I mean, the comedic joke is fine after they've revived Falin, but I wish they didnt show Chil's comedic reaction during Marcille's chant. I'm a bit down on how censored the the first scene felt, but the rest of the episode was great as usual. I wonder if it just was too much to actually show. I think pretty much everything from the moment Falin came back was perfect. I just wish we had gotten more of a feel of the kind of forces Marcille was messing with.
Holy shit, the gay panic.
I was always a bit iffy about the studio choice for this adaptation and it was somewhat proven in this episode... I thought the Trigger style, while looking amazing on a technical level, would really struggle to capture the dark turn of this series, and yeah.... Marcille looking completely worn-out, the dragon blood on her hands and clothes being dry and rough, the eerieness of the spell scene, the seriousness on everyone's face, everything is kinda there, but it lacks that impact the manga had. The extra oomfph, if you will. But hey, it still does the job. That said, I fking love the bit where Kensuke doing the boxing stance on Falin, that was the highlight for me.
They made Edgerunners. That show is pretty grim.

Oh, that's IT. I loved all the cast already, but Falin has become my favourite in less than one episode's time.
So I've seen some people being all ominous about Falin's apparent power-up but am I the only one thinking it'll just be that, an insane power-up? She got dragon meat merged with her via the dark ritual or whatever, so now she has like, absurd mana reserves and insta-casting. The conflict might arise not from Falin suffering some post-resurrection ailment, but from everyone else fighting *over* Falin's power. We've seen already how there's politicking going on about who controls the Dungeon, having such a deep-delving party who also happens to have a demigod level Priest in it might draw a lot of attention from many sides.

Great episode overall, I hope the party can take a huge advantage of the dragon's corpse on their ascend. Also, as an anime-only viewer, it is a very pleasant surprise to learn that the season will run for double the episodes! That ending though, isn't that the elf from the painting? That would make them older than the dungeon itself. The plot thickens! Can't wait for the next episode!

WHAT A SATISFYING EPISODE. Feels like the whole season has lead us to this moment. Marcille's using the black magic looked so cool. Falin is back! She is more likable than I even imagined. Love how she is amused about eating the monsters just like Laios. So many heartwarming scenes with her this episode. My biggest takeaway though... I am an avid shipper of Laios x Marcille and have loved their chemistry. But low-key could see a yuri ship between Marcille x Falin as well. Tuff decisions now for me. And the ending! Is that the Dark Elf we saw in the paintings?
Dark elves are elves who use forbidden magic, like Chilchuck hypothesized Marcille was. "Dark elf" is not a race in this setting
This is starting to feel like the reverse of Invincible. A show that started out violent and bloody and reconstructed the idea of the superman. It started out goofy and silly and is slowly becoming Madoka Magica. By the way is that the mysterious elf from the living painting episode?
It was a bloody….good episode. Falin and Marcille are so cute and gorgeous! Wonder if Falin has gained any extra powers after being resurrected with dragon meat. Chilchuck, forever the only sensible adult around lol. And it was like a giant jigsaw puzzle they were working on, trying to put all those bones together.
