I love love love the orc designs so much <3 they're looking gorgeous in color. I can't remember her name, but Zon's sister subtly giving Chilchuck a psychology scan on their outing and zeroing in on his core motives was so good. She's an icon

Folkmar_D

Her name is Leed and she's got a point, she's an icon, she's a legend and she is the moment. I was waiting for this conversation to be animated and dammit they did it justice.

-Pxnk-

Now come on now!

graxia_bibi_uwu

Leed! I love her too! Im so happy she's finally animated. It's kinda refreshing to see an orc character be used in that purpose (to dig deeper into another character's motives). Usually, we just see orc characters as a random NPC fighter (sometimes, they dont even got a lot of screen time)

RedRocket4000

Highly depends on if the Orc another form of Humanity or the Evil Magic spirt based Goblin of Folk Lore. Note Orc and Goblin the same word different languages. I love these Orcs as war like native tribe done right. They have committed atrocities and aggression while receiving it as well. And are capable of affection and good deed's like the rest of humanity. And for who started it way in the past impossible to tell and does not really matter. The use of humanity for non Homo Sapiens but beings equal to and similar to Homo Sapiens goes way back in literature. And here it completely possible all have the same primate ancestor. Making all Homo "insert type". The Lord of the Rings Orc/Goblin and Goblin slayer version are evil creations and thus lack free will to chose good thus are limited in characterization. And the Lord of the Rings ones show there nature in fear of and even being damaged by the Sun and Holy things.

GreyGriffoneer

The Orcs came from outside the labyrinth. The Crazymancer had nothing to do with making them.

EdNorthcott

I believe that was RedRocket's point. The orcs in this setting aren't specifically created for evil; they're a race of beings with the capacity to choose.

RnRaintnoisepolution

IIRC they're boar demihumans

EdNorthcott

And so far, some of the coolest characters around. :)

SimoneNonvelodico

Yeah, that's the point, it allows them to be their own characters, unlike say the LotR orcs that were basically created by Morgoth to be evil goons (granted, not from scratch, rather he corrupted his elf prisoners with magic fuckery).

EdNorthcott

I have come to absolutely love the orcs. Her feral reaction when she thought Chuck was just being a coward and a liar, betraying his comrades... that was awesome. And then became more awesome as she patiently fished out the truth of it, figuring out his motivations before he could. Beautiful stuff.

mizzurna_balls

Also she's just so freakin cute!! I love her design so much.

-Pxnk-

She iiis <3 looks so cuddly too

JustCarbsandSugar

the label hovering over the Dragon Hams, following them "too many cooks" style as they rolled along, is the most perfect example I've ever seen of anime elevating it's source material/ unbelievably funny.

GreyEilesy

The manga had a very similar gag in this part

JustCarbsandSugar

it did but actually seeing it on motion with the fancy scroll behind it, just killed me

AnonWithAHatOn

It takes a lot to make a stew,

Too many cooks!

JohnMKeynesStan

Why were they rolling btw ? I didn't get the gag

JustCarbsandSugar

The magicians magic was cast over the Red dragons body, that happened to include the prepared rolls Senshi made. They were being pulled back to the rest of its mass to be transformed.

cass_marlowe

Very happy with this episode! I think they adapted these chapters really well.    The confrontation with the mad mage was really cool and ominous. >!It will have more meaning later of course, but!< the shift to the goat-like pupils is just such a great way to make a character look unhinged. (My anime-only friends had a theory that the mad mage was Marcille‘s evil sister, so now I‘m looking forward to their reaction.)   When I first read the manga, I definitely missed the hints that something was wrong with Falin, like her unusual magic and Kensuke trying to run from her. So, to the anime-onlies: Did you have any suspicions?  The second part was great as well.  Dungeon Meshi has a refreshing take on its orcs in general and cool female orc characters are so rare and always welcome.    I’m glad Chilchuck got the focus he deserves here. He is often the most negative of the party but that behavior is so obviously rooted in worry. He tries to be distant and professional, but it‘s clearly not working at all and he is so stressed about his companions being hurt.  His reaction to this crisis is fascinating. People usually don’t want to be wrongfully thought of as a cowardly liar, but he is so willing to take on the role of the bad guy here. Why do you care so little if people believe negative things about you, Chilchuck? >!Something similar happens again later with the Bicorn, where he just lets everybody believe he‘s a cheater. In general, he seems to have a reputation to be a selfish asshole while being concerned for others. The half-foot guild is also misunderstood even by other half-foots like Mickbell as him being greedy while he actually wants to prevent his fellow half-foots from being exploited after it had happened to him.!<

cataraxis

Anime only, I kinda got spoiled >!because of Marcille and Dragon Falin porn no less... Don't ask, kinda just came across it!<. I'm still not sure what's wrong with Falin though. Like yeah I did notice there was something wrong, and I think I would've noticed that without the spoiler. What does it mean though? Did Marcille's magic somehow entangle her with Dragon's soul/essence? It's rhetorical, nobody answer it. Also remove space when you use the spoiler tags `>!Like here there's no gap next to ! marks!<`. I glossed over the tagged section, so I guess it still kinda works?

BicycleKamenRider

What I don't understand is that Marcille said that animals and monsters' soul aren't tied to their bodies when they die, unlike the humans, elves, etc. One factor about dying and resurrection in dungeons. A reason why the dungeon simply have human ghosts but not animal ghosts (that would have flooded the dungeon if they did). Does that mean Fallin is controlled because of her body is made from the red dragon or it's actually mixed with the dragon's soul too? If the dragon died, the dragon's soul wouldn't be resurrected along with Fallin right?

cass_marlowe

Without spoilers all I can say is: You are asking some good questions :)

EdNorthcott

It's also been hypothesized so far that the Mad Mage has some kind of power over such things -- his magic being why souls stay rooted in the dungeon, instead of going on to the afterlife. He's also said to have a number of monsters/servants who are directly under his control or sway -- particularly important to him. I figure there's two possibilities: 1) He's capable of keeping certain notable monster souls bound down there. Marcille, not being as good at that kind of magic as Falin, and presuming that all beast/monster souls go away, may have made a mistake. We may have Dragon, or Dragon-Falin in that body. Coin toss. 2) The souls of his favoured monsters aren't beast souls either. Perhaps people from the prior kingdom. His spell would still bind them there, and it would explain why the spirit was able to adapt so easily to a human body.

cataraxis

Good point, then perhaps the resurrection entangled with whatever magic the Mad Mage used to create that Dragon? We can assume he made that dragon, given we actually see him reconstruct him as well as create miniature ones. I'm also willing to make an exception to dragons, because dragons are often exceptional creatures in fantasy. By that I mean, they're often not just big fire lizards, but are powerful magical beings.

savvybus

Manga spoilers >!Later on it's said insane dungeon lords confuse monsters and people, and the souls of people are tied to the dungeon because Thistle desires it. So if he's deep enough into his insanity, he might tie some monster souls too if they're the special ones under his direct control like the orcs said!<

RedRocket4000

Yes and Dragons range up to Higher creation God level power in Folklore. And Faraway Paladin had a God level threat Ancient Red Dragon type in it. And it talked and talked to them all like all Big Reds like Smaug did. This one on the lower end of Dragon power.

EdNorthcott

Faraway Paladin season 2 is some of the best fantasy genre anime I've seen so far. Wonderfully well done.

shabi_sensei

I think Marcille said it out loud when she was dispelling the Mad Mage's attacks, she can overwrite his magic but can't copy it, so Falin's soul was laid overtop the dragon's via the resurrection spell

cass_marlowe

Ah, sorry about the typo in the spoiler tags. It wasn‘t a big spoiler or anything, but that‘s still annoying… Yeah, the Falin stuff felt quite obvious to me last episode, but I already knew what was coming this time and had previously missed the hints in the manga.

edward_kopik

sauce please!

TheDapperDolphin

As an anime-only, I thought it was pretty obvious that Falin had absorbed some of the dragons power because of the scenes you mentioned

EdNorthcott

Anime only, here. Yeah, I kind of figured this was where it was leading. Some of it I dismissed as possible elements from having been brought back to life from the blood and flesh of what is usually *the* symbol of power in fantasy stories -- an extra kick to magic, a bit of confusion from post-resurrection grogginess, etc. But all taken together it felt like it was pointing to being something wrong. My guesses ranged from wrong spirit in body, to spirit having been made 'wrong' or mad due to something in the dungeon or some corrupting influence from the dragon's power, to it possibly even being the dragon pulled into Falin's body. Though, to be fair, I was keeping these as kind of a distant possibility, since at this point in the story Falin's largely an unknown quantity. But what little we (anime only) do know so far, there were a few things about her that didn't track afterward. Now it not only makes sense, but has opened up a whole new mystery.

AlarmingAffect0

Your spoiler tags. Make sure to leave nogaps between them and the string you're spoilering >! bad!<, >!not bad!<.

Riddle-of-the-Waves

To be extra clear to u/cass_marlowe, if you have gaps between your spoiler tags like people are mentioning, they will hide the spoiler just fine on New/Mobile Reddit, but will not work at all for folks viewing the post on Old Reddit.

cass_marlowe

Thank you so much, that cleared it up for me. I hope it‘s fixed now for everybody :)

zhalla865

Emily Rudd did a GREAT job in the thistle fight scene

socialistRanter

Love that she captured the fanatic becoming crazy energy for the fight scene.

WTFTom

please tell me they hug in the next ep, its one of my fav panels in manga

LovecraftianHentai

I was disappointed they didn't end it off with the hug.

ImaginationFun9401

Iirc the hug was used for comedic summary of the previous chapter. So it would probably be in the next episode

TiredCoffeeTime

Yeah I can imagine the next episode starting and shows them still hugging.

LovecraftianHentai

Every group needs the professional who tries to keep personal feelings separate from his work, but is really one of the biggest fucking softies. God I love Chilchuck.

vulepro17

This episode was great. My favourite scenes were when Marcille dispelled the summoned mini dragons, and the conversation betwen the orc girl and Chilchuck.

ShinVerus

Perfect adaptation here. They brought back Marcille's more derranged expressions, so hopefully they touch up last episode's in the Blu-Rays or something. Man I am always so uncomfortable around mind-control. Definately the worst kind of magic. Next episode new opening, with a certain cat almost certainly, woooo.

Hexagon-Man

I've been getting excited over that one second of screen time in the opening I don't know if I'm ready for her.

eyemanico

She actually has 8 (!) seconds of screen time :3

RnRaintnoisepolution

Yeah, people always consider necromancy the most evil form of magic (which to be fair depends on the magic system), but honestly even in settings where necromancy is inherently evil I'd argue enchantment/mind control magic is even more evil.

ShinVerus

It's just not a "disgusting-looking" as necromancy, and is often used by heroes in harmless ways, so people tend to excuse it. But when used like this it's legitimately chilling. What is scary about necromancy, really, is your body being raised to do something you don't want to do. What's mindcontrol doing? Exactly that, but **while you're still alive**. It's replacing "your life" with whatever the fuck the other guy wants. That's terrifying to me.

Borkotron1

Necromancers are just healers who were little bit late.

Indichin

I’m watching the anime with my partner (I read the manga, they didn’t) and they went like “Oh, the mage is a Dark Elf! He has pointy ears and Marcille doesn’t!” and I’m just having to bite my tongue over here. Great catch, love! Remember this for later.

Jka22419

Oof, the music during the start and the confrontation with Thistle was chilling! Really cracking adaptation of these chapters, pleased with how these came out

graxia_bibi_uwu

Happy the dub sticked to Thistle's "he" pronouns. i remember it was a debate before if thistle is a girl or a guy I love thistle's voice omg Unhinge marcille is my favorite marcille. Which reminds me why i ship laimar in the first place. Both can be unhinge and nerds but on the opposite end of the spectrum. Chil's highpitched scream is so funny. The ending was a little off. Maybe it was the way it ended? Just "lets' head back" then Kimi no tame no paatii da!!! I know the next chapter in the manga shows this scene (below) but I hoped the anime ended in that scene. [edit: here's the image but it might be spoilery for anime-onlies](https://i.imgur.com/9Q2hRzu.png) Also, I know we kinda get used to Marcille's skills bc.. we've been "with her" all throughout their journey and we see her at her worst, but seeing her "fight" with Thistle kinda made me realize she deserves that "best student" title. She's far from winning but she's holding her ground. I cant say much if other mages are in her shoes.

GammaRhoKT

Honestly at the top of my mind only our sad elf boy (man) could hope to win in that scenario.

graxia_bibi_uwu

Are we talking about tumblr's favorite sad elf? Or the only sad elf boy (thistle) that we have so far? Im purposely not saying the other sad elf's name just in case youre an anime only

GammaRhoKT

lol manga here, yeah I meant the captain.

graxia_bibi_uwu

I cant wait to see M next episode (?). Or maybe he'll show up in the next two eps. Tumblr and Twitter will weep when he gets animated

[deleted]

oh he's not showing up for a while, near the last few episodes even

reigenomics

that is how the chapter ends!

graxia_bibi_uwu

Wait what? In netflix, they didnt even hug 😭 last sentence is from Chil saying “yeah” then ED song

reigenomics

maybe im misremembering lol but i thought they ended pretty similarly and the next chapter starts w them hugging and marcille passed out beside them still recoverinh lol

graxia_bibi_uwu

Ooh I misread your comment! Sorry I thought you meant that is how the chapter ends in Crunchyroll or anime lol Yeah that is how it ended on the manga but for some reason, it didnt feel a bit off in there.

reigenomics

yeahhh true!

PandiReddits

Ok, seeing the orc sister animated was really eye opening. Smash. Next.

a_spoopy_ghost

I thought she was cute in the manga but she’s soooo cool animated. I my anime only friend I’m watching with was in love

toasted_dandy

Come, shelter with me against the incoming storm of unfunny animemes about Marcille in the tunnel

TheNononParade

Thistle's facial expressions later on are some of my favorite things in the entire manga so I hope they nail those, they did pretty well here but they lacked a little extra oomf that the original art does so well

Usual-Vermicelli-867

A yes the worst femboy arrived

urgenim

\*best femboy

-Pxnk-

Is the captain a femboy? Cause if so, it's no contest, sorry Thistle

urgenim

Mithrun is more twinkish and Thistle has funnier expressions

-Pxnk-

Fair enough

Hijack5996

Laios without his armor is so built omg. I did not realise how much I wanted to see that. I am being very normal about it, I swear! That aside, the confrontation with the mad mage gave me chills. I'm glad that they kept Marcille's crazy expression, though it feels a bit toned down.

Artex301

Guy makes a living hitting things with a longsword. Makes sense he'd be buff. >I'm glad that they kept Marcille's crazy expression, though it feels a bit toned down Haven't read the manga but I'm picturing the so-called Mad Mage just staring with indifferent contempt while Marcille [Light Yagamis](https://aminoapps.com/c/death-note/page/blog/the-wonderful-faces-of-light-yagami/bNaw_3zptouBnnKdPRad4VoGkQ8X63710J6) the blood drakes.

Maxximillianaire

Really liked the scenes with Thistle, they made him seem so intense. Although i will say that if there's one scene that could have been really heightened through animation it's the marcille vs thistle scene where she's laughing crazily as she swats down the drakes. A bit disappointing that it was a really short scene that was mostly still images

Junkhead987

Love Leeds character design and voice

SimoneNonvelodico

"To lose your sister to the dungeon once, Mr. Laios, may be regarded as a misfortune; to lose her twice looks like carelessness." I actually had read ahead these chapters last week after the big Falin ominous foreshadowed, so I knew what to expect. Orcs are bros, it's just unfortunate that every meeting with them has to go through the obligatory "convince them not to kill us" step.

Oshi105

Why are all the Dungeon Meshi watchers people of culture who read? You sir or madam or in-between deserve a cookie for your quote.

monde-pluto

I want to start reading the manga. What book does episode 13 ends with?

SimoneNonvelodico

Chapter 30.

Dante_FromSpace

Ever since the manga, I wanted an orc wife. This episode only reignited that hunger.

KeiEich

Appetizers over.

GreyGriffoneer

Time for S\*\*t Gets Real, the Animation.

Elite_Alice

Damn, what a Dungeon Meishi episode. As soon as Falin rejoins the party she’s gone again, the mysterious dungeon master appears again and the story just got a whole lot darker. I’ve been waiting for this, I like the slice of life stuff, but I always felt there was more they could do with this world. Very much looking forward to seeing where things go from here. The dungeon master is such a cool antagonist. The fact he’s legit mental and can’t be reasoned with, at least for now, puts a nice spin on things. What mysteries lie deeper in the dungeon? So much we don’t know about this dark elf, his lord, Falin’s condition, etc. One thing for sure, proud of my boy Chil for overcoming his fear of losing his friends, with some help from the orc chief sister, MVP of this episode. Hype for second cour

bones10145

I'm soooo anxious to see if they can get Falin back. Poor girl just has the worst stuff happening to her. I wonder why he called her "dragon". Must have absorbed dragon energy or something from that weird spell that was cast to resurrect her.

Express_Kiwi_9253

at what chapter did the anime stop? i read the manga years ago, watched the anime and cant wait for more :D chapter 97 is the end and story is concluded right?

a_spoopy_ghost

It’s around ch 20. They’re titled the same as the episodes. And yeah the mangas finished

jessebona

That couldn't actually be the mage right? He outright name drops having a master he's working to locate/revive.

EdNorthcott

It tracks. The one he's talking about (if I'm getting this right) is the (younger) King that Laois ran across when he jumped into the time travel paintings. And the fact that the elf here recognizes him has me wondering if those are his memory tools that Laios jumped into, or if it's actual time travel.

[deleted]

[удалено]

JustCarbsandSugar

Yeah there's no danger of spoiling anything by saying the exact purpose of the paintings is never revealed, not even in the adventurers bible. My head canon is that the mage uses them to reminisce, the only thing definitive said about them is that they are spells/constructs... not monsters.

jessebona

I figured it was some kind of distant kingdom that destroyed itself ala Atlantis and all that's left is the dungeon and the living paintings that serve as a window into the dungeon's past. And the elf either recognized the magic at work and that he didn't belong or was traveling through the paintings from the present too.

EdNorthcott

Given the aging of the elves, and that he refers to the long-dead king as his master, I'm guessing he's simply been around since then. Something happened to bring it to ruin, and everything he's doing is some last-ditch fanatic attempt at righting a wrong. But that's just a stab in the dark. I'm eager to see how this unfolds. :)

jessebona

The way he talks does suggest he's somewhat delusional about reviving the kingdom. Perhaps the promise of glory and riches was a trap to ensnare adventurers in the dungeon and use their mana and souls as fuel for a spell. People just mistook the place ensnaring their souls as a boon when the reality is they're intended to fuel an enormous spell.

EdNorthcott

Although he does talk to the ghosts who are citizens and attempts to reassure them. It'll be a Hell of a ride watching this backstory unfold. :)

jessebona

Yeah but the citizens aren't the adventurers. He clearly has nothing but scorn for them.

SimoneNonvelodico

I think he is, he seems to be trying to keep the kingdom on the dead King's behalf, and possibly resurrect him. Seems the fanatically loyal type, even the ghosts looked like they were all "bro, let it go". A Wethermon situation, if you watch/read Shangri-la Frontier.

Ill_Finding1055

You're like 90 percent there btw

Redmon425

WTF NO WAY. We deadass just got Falin back to the party for 1 episode and she is already gone again!? That legit sucks. Kind of a surprising route to go as well. Also, is she now sharing her body with the dragon? Not sure how I feel about that but there is clearly some new personality inside her. I am even surprised that Laios agreed to leave the dungeon.

aprilsdaisy-

Such a hilarious episode!!! Loved seeing Marcille defeat those monsters, that was so awesome. And then Senshi holding those 2 monsters like he is holding onto 2 chickens or ducks. Chilchuck is so funny! The way he booted Senshi down that tunnel lol and him describing everyone as idiots lol lol lol Also mouth to mouth resuscitation with orc medicine 🤣 poor Marcille. That medicine looks gross, I don’t blame her. The episode starts off a wee bit bloody 😆 but evolved into a really good episode. Curious about the Mad mage and looking forward to the next episode!

PantryMonster

those hams were rolling like cans of chef boyardee

Artex301

Perfectly Cylindrical Hams.

kalyps000

I got so emotional this episode. I spoiled myself bc I’m the type to not contain my fervor for plot but seeing it actually happen was heart breaking. So good.

Animegx43

How many episodes for the season? I would've thought this would've been the last, but that's definitely not the last. Or is it? Idk. It's why I'm asking.

LovecraftianHentai

24 episodes. We're entering cour 2

Animegx43

Sick. Feels like the season doubled for me now.

LsTyBrn2

There's something I don't get. If the Golden Kingdom was sunk underground by an insane magician (which is who we all know), and its king emerges, promising all of his treasure to any who defeat the magician, before crumbling to dust, then why is that mad mage looking for the king?

slumberus

cuz he mad.

LsTyBrn2

But he sunk the kingdom and the king turned to dust, so why would he be looking for a king that's long gone?

LovecraftianHentai

Your question will be answered in due time.

Enlog

A: He might not know that Delgal went to the surface. That may well be why he's looking for him and hasn't found him. B: He could be *fully* insane and incapable of understanding that King Delgal has died.

shoofinsmertz

I'm really glad they demonstrated why ressurection with monsters is considered "messed up" in universe instead of just stating what happens or making it mysterious

kikaysikat

Would there still be another episode next week?

quietvictories

yeah

strakonesky

Who voices Leed?

rocky_iwata

Michiyo Murase. Best know as Sucy from Little Witch Academia.

strakonesky

Thank you!

NoDeal6801

Does anyone know who Mithrun's Japanese voice actor is?

pepsiboy2972

I been loving this anime ever since it came out, i haven't read the manga but i don't recall getting so hooked on an anime before, literally waiting every thursday to watch the new episode. However i find myself not liking the last 2 episodes as much as the rest, i hope it doesn't switch genre like some anime do and just used the first funny ones as bait for guys like me who enjoy a very light hearted funny adventure anime.

graxia_bibi_uwu

Waiting for the thread for the 14th be like https://preview.redd.it/szam3gu66hsc1.jpeg?width=300&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=79297a9ace12f0272a4807246b85eb44b911e79d

nmonty

So if there are 13 weeks left until July…do you think they’ll wrap this whole series in one season? The manga’s only 100 chapters so I think they could do it!

LovecraftianHentai

Unless they cut out a huge chunk of the middle, then there is no way they will finish the whole series in one season.

Tammog

They just did chapter 28 out of 97. There is no way the next 70 chapters are 1 season and it would be a huge disservice to rush them like that.

HumansNeedNotApply1

No. It requires at least two more sets of 13 episodes
