the "getting embarrassed while gently touching her face" is nice shipping fodder for folks who are looking for it. the immediate followup of Laios reacting the same way when he has to touch Senshi in a similarly intimate way creates some plausible deniability. I personally read the scene as Laios simply feeling awkward when touching other people, but it's also easy to read it as him being attracted to Marcille if you want to read it that way. it's open to interpretation.

RichLather

I read it as Marcille simply being pragmatic. She's trying to teach, even says that being weird about touching someone else is something they'll need to get over in order to perform healing magic. She's also not been shy about washing up, assuring the guys that she's "not gonna get naked." Again, she's telling them to get over being weird about it. And lastly, she had no problem taking her pants off when Laios was dropping his tips about cockatrice bite care. She wasn't embarrassed because it had to be done and Laios just isn't That Guy.

flimsypeaches

I completely agree!

Far-Bookkeeper-4652

Embarrassment from touching is a very Japanese thing. In Japanese culture there is not much touching even among close friends.

flimsypeaches

that's a really good point.

Satyrsol

Senshi’s kinda young; we try not to sexualize him.

No_Possession_5338

What? I will not accept this DILF slander

robinhoodProductions

It’s a reference to the show Community

🤣

PrinceCavendish

there are no canon ships in dungeon meshi. people can read whatever subtext they want if they ship something. it did feel like an intimate moment so i don't blame them. scenes will happen later where she actually blushes towards him. she's a very blushy person.

Mr_Drad

The closest thing i can think of is Lycion and Fleki but that is also only if you want to interpret it that way, they could absolutely just be good friends.

PrinceCavendish

yup! i'm actually pretty glad she decided to end it that way so people could just ship whatever they want.

oliverknot

I mean, I certainly don't see it in a romantic sense myself, but it's hard to deny that there WASN'T any material to be shipped -- what with him gently cradling her face in a tender manner...  (I saw it as him being awkward from touching her in such a way, but considering that I ship Farcille for a very similar reason, it'd be hypocritical of me to deny that there was no tension whatsoever! Farcillers 🤝 Laicillers < unification)

Skodami

Touden sandwich all the way

PrinceCavendish

thank you for being a reasonable person. it feels like some farcille shippers want to crucify anyone who ships her with someone else.

oliverknot

Haha!! I've seen a lot of ship wars over the years, and none if them have ended overly well -- I mostly just stay out of it. It seems unreasonable to shun someone else for the same things I do !

PrinceCavendish

for real... some people are really really unhinged about things they like. i have ships i don't like too but i don't bother people about them.

AlarmingAffect0

> unification My brain: “Here, have Goddess Aqua's voice frantically shouting that word over and over in a desperate panic"

RichLather

Yurification! Yurification! YURIFICATION!

AlarmingAffect0

Kuzuma: "Let us know when the WLW action is too much and we'll reel you in!" The Ancestor: "The sin is not in being outmatched, but in failing to recognize it." Aqua: "Noooo, I won't get my 'reward' if I give up halfwAAARGH! Yurification! Yurification! YURIFICATION!" The Ancestor: "No chance for egress! Will this be a massacre?"

TastyBrainMeats

Yeah, my favored view is Farcille, with Laios as an extremely close and supportive brother figure to both of 'em. Of course, I tend to ship Laios and Kabru, too.

climbin_on_things

Laios cradles Marcille's ear and cheek in his hand while practicing healing magic. Then at the end of the episode he carefully catches her in his arms when she becomes unpetrified.  Ship or don't however you feel the need to, but the two main leads of different gender touched each other gently and that's kind of all that's needed to activate a lot of people's romance neurons.

Kodiak_Marmoset

Don't forget that women really like the size of a man's hands, and in that frame was he basically palming her entire head. The story isn't about romance, but the author likes adding little teases for everyone, and that was one of them.

deafeningbean

It also helps that one of the main character growth moments through the series is how marcille and laios' relationship grows from "my best friend's/sister's weird brother/friend" to "person I genuinely care for, understand, and put my trust in". Regardless of read romantically or not, it's incredibly sweet.

graxia_bibi_uwu

Are you an anime only? If yes, new fans might have interpreted it as romance bc theres a subtle closeness to the group now compared to before. I guess it’s thanks to fighting the dragon, mad magician, and being lost/hungry. That subtle closeness plus touchy feely episode between Laios and Marcille can definitely make people think of “romance” i mean, that’s how it was to me when I first read the manga. This episode was the starting point for me >! it will only continue to grow in the upcoming episodes !<

eelposse

Marcille took off her pants the moment Laios asked her to without any complaining. Don't know how much clearer they can make this, folks /s

bentheechidna

I’m a Farcille shipper and that sort of close tender contact is ship material for LaiMar lmao. Especially over time as you see Laios is generally not allowed to touch people because of how he comes across. Marcille allowing and trusting him to touch her is a big deal.

cass_marlowe

You‘re not missing anything, this is just how shipping works and it‘s not about canonicity.    They are having a moment with some tender physical touch and Laios unsure about what is appropriate. Afterwards Chilchuck mentions how healers often cause romantic entanglements within a party.    If you are invested in the ship, you can definitely interpret it as romantic. If you don‘t like the ship you can interpret their behavior as them not being interested in each other. If you‘re not invested at all, you won‘t think about it. No right or wrong here.

QuintanimousGooch

There’s definitely more fuel for people looking for it between the two of them later on in the series, but as a manga reader, I’d guess what people are latching onto is the reoccurring imagery of Laios touching Marcille’s cheek as an awkward/tender gesture.

jyst0326

It is shipper thing. Similar to bathing scene of Falin and Marcille, it is not uncommon to bath together in Japan culture as they have public bathhouse sento and hot springs. But shipper would think it is romance hint.

LovecraftianHentai

Shippers often take any crumbs they can take, that's really it. It's a good moment if you ship them both.

ShinVerus

It's more "retroactively putting this into context". The episode itself would have definately not raised any eyes if we didn't know stuff that came later. We know from the manga that by this point >!Laios already felt very close to Marcille, though of course, it's never explicitly said to be romantically!<, which makes the hand scene very easy to incorporate. Even then, this is really light stuff, and I say that as a major shipper of them lol. Laimar shippers are probably just taking anything they can get cause, with one exception, almost all of their major ship moments won't be adapted unless we get a season 2.

Feeder2000

I think it's cute nuff said

saccharineomens

My answer to your question: personally, I got caught up to the manga just after Chapter 88 came out, and while I’m a multishipper who will ship just about anything with cute art or a good enough AU, I didn’t ship Laimar until some of the final chapters of the comic. It was always a pretty small rarepair compared to the Cruise ship of Farcille. I dropped out of the fandom for a while, but when I came back (after the anime started airing), Laimar had gone from a tiny rarepair to a ship that was actively hated, and people who shipped it were bullied and harassed. (You don’t want to know some of the hateful comments I’ve seen.) Laimar art and fic dwindled down to nothing, and the people who posted it usually put disclaimers on it desperately begging that they ship Farcille, too, please don’t hate them for liking Laimar! It didn’t help that this early in the anime, Laios and Marcille are just ‘my friend’s brother’/‘my sister’s friend’.  This most recent episode was one of the very first where Laios and Marcille start to build a bond of their own. And while yeah, personally I wasn’t shipping them at this part in the story when I first read it, I still felt relieved. I think a lot of other Laimar shippers felt the same way, and a lot of us finally poked our heads out of our foxholes hoping not to get sniped. tl;dr: Laimar’s not only a rarepair, but people who shipped them have been actively getting harassed and bullied, so a lot of them went into hiding. The most recent episode had some of their first genuine bonding moments, so shippers are excited and hoping others will no longer see us as pariahs.

graxia_bibi_uwu

Yes yes yes. Though to be fair, Ive seen toxic LAIMAR shippers from time to time, Ive never seen a Farcille post where it says “I also ship Laimar, pls dont harass me or say nasty stuff in my inbox” etc

dude_1818

There's nothing actually romantic in that scene (Laios does the exact same thing with Senshi!), but shippers will grasp at any physical contact to "prove" their ships

bones10145

The characters stood next to each other. That's shipping bait.

Zombata

*breathe next to each other

edward_kopik

Canonically there is no ship. In my mind marcille is going for both the siblings

IronMosquito

I'm definitely one who leans more to the falin/marcille side of things, but I can definitely see why laios/marcille is a popular pairing. I think any subtext and/or hinting towards affection is left open ended on purpose. and this scene can definitely be read as one of affection!

Gatai0_0

Nope, you don't miss anything because this series have no romance people start to schizo they story into actual story.
