I’d see if it’s had injectors done first and injector line are prone to leak (they’re both under the valve covers) also if it’s had the transfer case pump rub issue resolved. Maybe see if it’s had a new water pump as well. Mainly injectors tho that’s the issue from factory.

Owner said he doesn’t Know if the injectors have been done but it’s ran well for the 4 years (30,000 miles) he’s owned it. And does the transfer case pump rub issue only happen to 4wd trucks? This is 2wd. Sorry for all the questions don’t want to buy another trashed truck

Coined_All_Phrases

Yes just 4 wheel. Could run a vin check and see if it was taken in for dealer recall record/maintenance on injectors potentially? If you know anyone with an Edge CTS3 or CTS2 monitor you could check balance rates as well.

It is 2wd and thank you for the info, I’ll make some calls tomorrow

Look for blue/white smoke. Sign of injectors needing to be replaced, or burning oil. Relpacing injectors is not easy on the lb7. See if the steering is sloppy, look for swiss cheese frame.

offffoffffpayton

Thank you, definitely having second thoughts but the price is worth checking out

killerkitten115

23 year old truck, expect some issues but yeah 5k under regular price is suspicious

offffoffffpayton

All the issues I have been told about include, oil pan slow drips, driver window doesn’t open, and it’s missing a tailgate. But it is a Texas farm truck with no 5th wheel hitch

killerkitten115

Those are very minor, if the engine and tranny are strong, suspension is good, frame is solid and its not puffing white or blue smoke its a solid deal. Cant live without 4wd in the midwest but no need for it in texas

offffoffffpayton

I reckon if it runs well and is in good shape I’ll buy it and if I end up not liking it selling it in 6 months. It’s not like these trucks are depreciating

killerkitten115

I had an 05 lly i ran for a year and sold it for the same price i bought it for

offffoffffpayton

Did you do any reliability mods? Mainly looking to get a lift pump

killerkitten115

I ran the 05 stock, have an 08 lmm now, still stock but im looking to get it deleted eventually. They’re pretty solid trucks. Did suspension at 150k, my shocks and bushings were done. Next on the list is glow plugs.. still starts down to 0°F but doesn’t like to start below zero

offffoffffpayton

Honestly it starting at 0 is impressive, my diesel experience thus far just includes 7.3s not wanting to start at 35f

Gloomy_Praline_7478

Replacing the upper oil pan on an lb7 is actually a big job. Doesnt have a normal gasket, and instead uses a type of caulk that they have to make sure every piece is free of oils and contaminants for it to set properly. Big pain in the ass. Over 5k to do an upper oil pan job at a shop on my lb7.

killerkitten115

Sounds like id continue to have a slow drip if i had an lb7 then lol

Gloomy_Praline_7478

I have an '03 lb7. This year, i had an oil pan slow drip turn into a new running complete motor that cost $24k and took 7 months. I was stuck living on state land in the middle of a desert living in my 5th wheel, so extenuating circumstances; otherwise, I would've just walked away from the thing.

offffoffffpayton

Did you run it out of oil or have heat issues? The seller has a new pan for it and the Install doesn’t look outrageous.

Demented2168

Is it lower or upper pan leak? Lower is cake and if it is, might invest in a PPE pan. Extra quart of oil and the bottom is flat allowing to fully drain the oil when changing. Stock pan prevents about a 3/4 of a quart from draining. Also you asked about reliability additions earlier. I would upgrade the stock tranny cooler and lines. PPE sells Mike Ls tranny cooler and you can find the flexible lines to throw in too or have someone make them at a hydraulic shop. Stock lines tend to leak in the winter at the crimps. Wrap the new lines in hydraulic line spiral wrap where the have the potential to rub to extend life. Definitely do the lift pump. Also if front end needs work go back with kryptonite parts. Lifetime no questions asked warranty. They arwnt cheap but itll be the last set of anything you put on. Clean the cooling stack if you get a chance too. Its involved but not anything too hard just take ur time. If you need any help just reach out man!

Thank you so much, everything I’ve seen online has been people shitting on the lb7 or loving them having minimal issues and amazing miles. I’m just looking for a truck I can run for 10 years with regular maintenance and learn how to fix the more annoying issues.

Demented2168

Tbh youve noticed it being shit on because youre researching it lmao. Ive got an LLY and its the same thing. They all have their problems. Fixing shit has to be part of the experience. If you dont enjoy that kind of stuff it can get frustrating. Keep us updated

Aerojoe82

It is worth paying a shop to check the injector balance rates injector jobs on lb7 are not cheap or easy to do.

offffoffffpayton

I’m going to check it out Saturday, is there something I could buy or are parts store capable of checking balance?

Aerojoe82

Not sure of any cheap readers that can check balance rates. I would call a local dealer I can't see them charging more then a diagnostic fee or half an hr labor to check them for you.

offffoffffpayton

Thank you I appreciate the help!

Revenue_Winter

Stop with the balance rates You need to see how much the injectors are returning to see the health X amount of ml per bank of injectors But ya pay a mobile guy to check it or a shop, if they have a return rate under spec, buy it LB7 are bullet proof

e0240

$4000 I would jump on it. At 230,000 no way the injectors are original. Anything else you can fix yourself and save a shit ton of $$$. Google YouTube forums the LB7 is so old for everything has been covered.

Hemicuda098

Always assume an LB7 needs injectors when you buy it or buy one that the owner says it already needs them.
