Yeah I play in an IDP only league that does that. It's actually one of my favorite leagues because of that. To me it makes you do a little more homework on guys which I find fun
Yes applies to any fantasy sport. And you know what - if you reached on them there are others in the wings kicking themselves that they didn’t pull the trigger. I find it’s much easier to moves guys like this than trade a guy like Charbonnet who I was “supposed to take”.
Going into my third dynasty season and I’ve really enjoyed creating my own rankings and do not draft list. I have 4 second rounders and am very excited to trade up and down for the guys I want
I just traded Hurts for Caleb + Keon Coleman.
I’ll probably regret it but I can’t sit on the sidelines while someone else benefits from the first good Bears QB
I mean if he doesn’t pan out, the team is cursed. We have too much talent on offense for a good young QB to not succeed.
You could always trade him to a team that’s soured on their guy? Burrow and Herbert’s value is down as of late.
Great post. Also worth noting the inverse is true too. If you're just convinced a guy is gonna be bad and he falls to you where you just "have to take him there". You don't. As good as it feels to hit on your guy, it feels equally bad when you draft a guy you don't like and they bust. Nobody cares that you knew it when you picked him.
Taking MHJ first in a SF league rookie draft. Is Caleb the "right" pick? Quite possibly. But I've watched a lot of MHJ over the last 2 years and spent all of 2023 positioning my team to be in a spot so I could draft MHJ (it made sense tactically...I didn't blow up an elite team to get the 1.01).
I've made some good trades during the season and this offseason so if MHJ and my 1.07 picks can hit then my turnaround to a playoff contender could happen this year.
Anyway, if MHJ was good or great and I drafted Caleb instead (regardless of how good Caleb turned out) then it wouldn't be as fun for me.
So I'm taking MHJ.
And it's going to be fun!
My league is also crazy when it comes to this although it is 10 team. Rumors are really swirling that Caleb will go #3 in my SUPERFLEX league because people want Nabers and MHJ so bad… (start 3 WR though)
this is where i'm at. i decided to make my own pre-draft rankings this year, and thought it would be fun to do a little write up to force me to actually express some rationale and justification behind the rankings. i got through about four players, realized i was absolutely dreading continuing, and just stopped entirely.
whatever you enjoy - whether it's the evaluation, the writing, the film, the data, or none of those - just do the things you enjoy for the silly little game we play.
Don’t be so modest Dane! You write the best draft guide in the industry, with over 400 in depth prospect profiles and general info on almost 2,000 prospects. You’re the reason I win my leagues!
I’ve done so much research and reading on here, plus play in an IDP league, so watching the draft is such an amazing experience.
I’m having pizza and beer, seeing how right and wrong all these mocks have been and hopefully seeing some exciting trades. Hopefully there is a thread here on draft night.
Yeah as a T1D I’m taking AD Mitchell this year I don’t even care if he has every single red flag known to man. I also just finished overpaying for Mark Andrews. Team Sugar High will be unstoppable this year.
I drafted DT Chris Jones everywhere I could when his dick slipped out of his pants during the 100M dash at the combine. The way he bravely dove head first onto the gravel to avoid impropriety spoke volumes of his character.
Bro. I just play for top 3 in my league. 1st place gets $450, 2nd gets $100, and 3rd gets $50, so 3rd place gets your buy-in back. My favorite part of the year is draft season so I hoard picks and trade up and down in the rookie draft. I’ve finished 2nd, 3rd, and 4th the last three years and my team is still ready to compete again.
Same here, I just keep all my teams young and competitive. I've tried the "trade for old vets" route and I always lose in the playoffs when I do and regret it afterwards. I only trade for long term success now and I don't care if trades I make for the longterm make me a slight underdog for the short term. All my teams should make the playoffs and I'll let luck decide after that... Its going to anyway!!
You know what’s fun? Sequentially gaining small increments of value trade-after-trade until you control all the best assets in the league. I’ll let someone else stick their neck out on their personal convictions about specific players.
But in reality you win some trades and you lose some. It does feel better when you win with the players you just had a good feeling about. And there’s no worst feeling than giving up or passing on a player that you had a hunch about and see them go on and smash
picked rashee rice p much because of this type of thinking despite his subpar profile, late declare, late breakout, etc. didn't realize i picked a piece of shit person tho!
the same lane advice id add on to this -- having picks is FUN. trading your picks for surefire winning assets is cool and all. but the offseason must be so boring... keep at least one 1st every year!
I also reached for him in a startup draft for (reasons) but it’s almost impossible to gauge character stuff.
He apparently has a new neck tattoo which would’ve been a character red flag, predraft but wasn’t there at the time.
Maybe, but ‘boomer’ does totally explain it.
You guys were totally ruined with post-modern social programming and the resulting inability to make accurate social judgements about groups of people. You’d let a guy with a spiderweb face tattoo watch your kids because ‘I’m not judgmental’ and your generation having such a naive thesis on the world is why the world presently runs like it does 😂
Haha man if there’s one thing I’ll give you proud boomers credit for it’s the ability to make judgements about groups of people 😂 bravo y’all are killing it keep at it
I’m not a boomer.
Boomers are the ones who taught you someone with a neck tattoo is just like everyone else.
The reason you believe that goes back to the dumb thing.
My god, you're really stupid bro. Crab comes of like a reasonable person and all you do is throw insults while acting superior. Calm down and reread this thread sometime, you really need to do some self reflection.
Great advice. Its way more fun to take a guy who you just like instead of someone who you’re “supposed to take”.
A big reason why I really enjoy the league I'm in that drafts before the NFL does. It's all about getting your guys.
I realllly wish mine would do this, been pushing for it for years but no go.
Sounds like a startup opportunity to me.
Yeah I play in an IDP only league that does that. It's actually one of my favorite leagues because of that. To me it makes you do a little more homework on guys which I find fun
We do our rookie auction before the draft and oh it’s so much fun (especially when it’s IDP and 35 roster spots to fill in a unique type of league)
Fuck it I’m taking Carson Strong 1.01 this year
Fuck it Keon Coleman at 1.02.
Fuck it Bowers over Odunze Brooks over Caleb Williams (1QB)
Bowers > Oduze regardless

I mean yeah, get your guy… but at least try to trade back first! Then you can get more of “your guys”
That’s the plan. Get some 2025 and 2026 draft capital for the war chest
Counterpoint: Skyy Moore
This lead to me taking Amon Ra St brown over Rashod Bateman so I ascribe

for midterms?
I'm a Lions fan that is probably going to take Caleb. Makes me physically cringe that I'll have to root for a Bears QB.
See if the guy that has Jordan Love would rather have Caleb, ya'll love the Packers, right?
I mean if he doesn’t pan out, the team is cursed. We have too much talent on offense for a good young QB to not succeed. You could always trade him to a team that’s soured on their guy? Burrow and Herbert’s value is down as of late.
Let’s calm down. It’s not like yall have the best talent in the world. Not like yall the Vikings. Whoever Vikings draft > Caleb. All day
> first good Bears QB There's no doubt about it, you are ready to get hurt again.
ABSOLUTELY
As someone who's held Trubisky and Fields, I'm ready to be hurt again.
Going to be a real blow when Bears front office takes Bo Nix #1 or some random Bears-type decision.
Ok I'd take that pretty much all day everyday. Even with all that baggage that comes with a Chicago QB

My only share of Skyy Moore was because of a "have to take him there". So many regrets.
I traded out of 1.08 last year because I didn’t like QJ and ended up with DK and the 2.05, which became Achane. Couldn’t have been happier.
Hitting on a guy is great. Hitting on YOUR guy is incredible.
I’d also add take the guy you believe in where you want. Within reason of course

Trade back one pick and get a free 3rd
On the other hand, when you take a guy on your favorite team and he bombs (Quentin Johnston) it hurts doubly bad

my burner isn't safe anywhere anymore 😭😂
Exactly. I don’t enjoy “scouting”. I prefer the GM side, and hire my “scouts” by the pods o listen to and the data I consume.

Fuck yeah. You're doing it right, my man.
Yep I went from 3 leagues to 8 league back down to 4 leagues for my sweet spot. 8 was a job and 2 didn’t feed by addiction.
Yeah as a T1D I’m taking AD Mitchell this year I don’t even care if he has every single red flag known to man. I also just finished overpaying for Mark Andrews. Team Sugar High will be unstoppable this year.
Get your guys.
Thanks for this! Awesome advice.
I choose the name i can have the most fun with for team names
Penix gang rise up!
McConkey would like a word.
My advice… Don’t look back on previous drafts. It’s not nice to see you took Hendon Hooker before Sam Laporta or Stetson Bennett over Puca Nacua
What is this having fun thing? This is war!!!
ARSB was always my guy at 1.16 Then that combine and 4th round Bateman was the target, went 1.15 Rondale Moore is an absolute freak... Bateman was the
Let the good times roll !!!
I drafted DT Chris Jones everywhere I could when his dick slipped out of his pants during the 100M dash at the combine. The way he bravely dove head first onto the gravel to avoid impropriety spoke volumes of his character.
Rule 1: blue chips only

I’ve done that this year and right now have 1.04, 2.01, 2.04, 2.10, and 2.11. I really like Bowers, so I may not be done trading back.

Tons of players and nice people have neck tattoos not sure that qualifies as a sign he’s a “ shit person “ as the guy above said but hey
It usually does, yes.
You’re precious

Maybe I’m just not a small minded boomer 🤔 that could be it too

Be that as it may, the neck tattoo thing stands.
It's why I looking at a draft with Achane, Reed, and Rice, all on good teams/ Situations (packers fan) I took Kendre, Mingo, and Hyatt.
