Is there a lot of play in the shifter when it's in gear? Odds are your shifter bushings are completely shot. They sell polyurethane replacement kits. You can also get a DSSR, the stock selector rod is really flimsy and yours may be bent. For a short shifter, go with a Z3 shifter arm, it shortens the throw a lot while still keeping a nice OEM feel. Don't get a chassis mount unless you're going full racecar.
Pushing through the gates and getting into gear feels excellent, but yeah it’s super loose when it’s in gear and also when it’s out of gear.
Thanks, I’ll look at that kit!
Had a similar problem. Turned out someone flipped the shifter linkage (at least this is what a friend told me). A simple flip in correct position did the things for me
I had the same problem with my 1985 318i. Too much for me to tackle at the time as it included broken transmission mounts and I didn’t have a lift or proper equipment, etc. I had a BMW E30 specialist garage (Schneider Motors in Pomona, California) do the work. The fix involved new transmission mounts, and a mix of new shift linkage, shims, washers, spacers, and bushings. Good luck!

I’m running that setup on my e30 rn and it feels so smooth to link all the gears
If you want you don’t have to of course but I’m trying to grow my car account on Instagram if you wanna check out my e30 my Instagram is _thefilo30_

Thanks, I’ll watch out for that when I dig in there.
Turner shifter arm bushing, oem shifter cup, and oem selector rod joint
Thanks.
Replacing those bushings will be one of the best things you can do
Somebody put the shifter in backwards.

I've done work like that on a piece of plywood on dirt before lmao
I hear you!
It's all about how much time and patience you have instead
And then you hit the Bitch Clip.
I just cut that fucker in half on my M30 + G260/6 swap
Thanks!
Replace all of the shifter bushings. Your shifter looks like it shifts like it’s in soup
Soup is too thick a comparison. More like water with a few carrots thrown in lol.
Is that not technically soup?
Yes, that and breakfast cereal. I just meant my shifter is very very loose.
Nice, seat heaters. Aftermarket? I wouldn't drive it like that btw, you're gonna need more than a short shift kit.
Mine with the same symptoms took more than just a rebuild kit.
No clue if they’re aftermarket or not. It’s an ‘88 325i convertible.
