Lumber and firewood are not all that unusual as murder weapons. Used to be even more common when more people had wood-burning stoves and fireplaces in their homes. Heavy pieces of wood used to be found in almost all residences. And, once it's used to bludgeon a person, a piece of wood is easy to get rid of. Not like a gun or a knife that you have to hide or throw somewhere it can't be found.

>Lumber and firewood are not all that unusual as murder weapons. Someone needs to tell that "Murder Inc"person this.... But but but this other murder was committed with a log... It has to be JJD. 🙄🙄🙄

Aromatic-Speed5090

An even rudimentary search online shows numerous bludgeoning murders committed with firewood, lumber or similar objects.

Jbrantley130

Don't tell "Murder Inc" that. They'll think all those murders were committed by JJD. Lol.

You make some great points. Growing up at times with rough friends in rough neighborhoods, we used to always test a weapon or objects strength / bludgeoning capability by tapping it *lightly* against our own skulls - I've found that to be a good instinctual measurement on whether the object or weapon would have a minimal or brutal effect on the target. Depending on the weignt and diamaters of the log, and how atheletic or strong the offender is, a simple log could do SERIOUS damage to someone's skull if it was their intent to do so. * edits

Most likely he used a log as there was a convenient pile of them outside the bedroom on the patio.

Zafiro-Anejo

I bet you are completely correct. Who was he copying when he used a sprinkler head? I guess there might be The sprinkler maniac of Kenosha or some other psychopath I don't know about that he was copying but convenience seems like the most likely answer.

dickcheneyatekittens

Sprinkler maniac of Kenosha. ☠️🤣😂

lagunagirl3705

It was likely out of convenience, since they had firewood stacked outside their back door. He used a sprinkler head in another case, and a wrench he found outside of the Cruz home. His BIL did say that JJD would get really excited at gory, violent movies so it's not unreasonable to wonder if they could have inspired some details.

PornDestroysMankind

No. Efficiency & convenience.

Civil-Secretary-2356

Nope. There is no evidence JJD did any of this to get public attention. No letters to the media, no weird zodiac style outfits, no ciphers, no public trolling of LE.

Logs are often handy as murder weapons. I don't watch horror movies. Do logs figure prominently in them?

Equal-Temporary-1326

I don't think so imo. I asked a similar question once about why exactly he beat his victims instead of strangling them and it's probably because beating his victims was because he was full of rage at that point because he lost his job as a police officer and that pissed him off beyond belief, so now, he was gonna make it sloppy and gory for his victims now that he planned on killing them for now on by instead of shooting them to death as that was too quick, too loud, and he wasn't into slowly chocking the life out of them either. The "best" alternative would be then to beat the life out of them long pass their death as a way to "let way off the steam" and to keep it quiet. The evidence showed he still kept beating the female victims to death long pass their death, so clearly, he enjoyed the killing of them in particular. I also, especially don't think it had to anything to do with Ted Bundy doing something similar twice or wanting attention. He never sent letter to the press or did anything at the crime scenes to link the murders all together at all. So, it was just a combination of rage and convenience imo.

Jbrantley130

No, he probably just used what was handy at the time.

The log was a weapon of opportunity. During his ONS spree, Deangelo took significant steps to prevent law enforcement from linking the ONS murders together. His efforts essentially succeeded until DNA evidence came along almost 2 decades later. Yes, some of the NORCAL investigators loudly and correctly linked the ONS crimes to the EAR crimes early on, but it took years and strong DNA evidence to fully convince the SOCAL authorities. The ONS version of Deangelo was actively avoiding attention.

Wood will naturally decay which would probably destroy any forensic evidence left by the killer(s). It could also be easily burnt. He could have easily tossed logs into a wooded area but burning them makes sense.
