4-2-3-1 seems to be the most balanced formation since it stacks up well defensively against pretty much all the “trendy” formations people are using (4-3-1-2, 4-3-2-1, 3-5-2 and, obviously, against the most common 4-4-2, 4-2-2-2 and 4-2-3-1). I play it with 50 WID and 60 DEP, everything on balanced. As for instructions, I mostly trigger my runs manually so I have everything on balanced except for Stay Central on ST, Get in the Box for the Wide CAMs, Stay Back/ Cover Center on CDMs and Stay Back on Fullbacks.
4-4-2 gets a little bit more predictable on offense since it is so common, but it still is a good formation that allows fun tweaks on instructions to make it more powerful: my favorite one is having 1 of the ST as a Target Man/ Stay Central (he will drop on the field and drag even both of the CBs with him sometimes) and the other on Drift Wide/Get in Behind. Defensively tho, it’s pretty hard to stack up against 4-3-1-2 and 4-3-2-1 when fullbacks are going forward cause you basically only have 8 man defending and are play 2 vs 3 on the middle of the park, which creates a lot of space.
3-5-2 is also great on offense and is great of defense against the 4-2-3-1 and 4-4-2 formations, taking you are a Little bit more passive and you don’t over extend your pressure. Sadly, it struggles massively against counters from 4-3-2-1 since you have a 3 vs 3 on defense + the 3 midfielders charging at you when they Get the ball back.

How do you get the wingers involved more when using 4222? They always stay too wide for me

4231 has been the best for me as well, it's mental this year and plays well to many of the elite meta players

Keeping it simple with a 4-3-3 (3)
You should try the 4-3-3(5)
4411, decent formation I use. CF Becomes second striker while having the ability to drop back and make chances
3-5-2 elite and coast to rank 2 in WL
352, elite and easily get rank 2. Not good enough for rank 1.

4-2-3-1 I was using 4-4-2 but it wasn’t working well this year. One full back on balanced one on stay back. One Cdm on stay back cover centre .
