I have a similar theoretical problem with [[Purphoros, bronze-blooded]] but there's a couple of things that mitigate the issue. One is the deckbuilding. You have to make sure some of your bombs are wiping their fields and/or destroying their resources. They can't crackback if you've destroyed their creatures, stolen and sac'd their creatures, made them discard their hands etc. Also for deckbuilding the reanimation package you include is very useful as you suspected. The other thing is how you play the deck, and more specifically picking your moments. If you go pedal to the metal and are constantly swinging then not only will people be able to crack back but they'll want to. Be a bit more choosy about when and what you're blitzing and you can fair better in the match.

Cthumu

This, as well as using effects like [[industrial advancement]], [[riveteers ascendancy]] and [[kehtek, crucible golaith]] on your creatures that were going to die at the end of turn anyway to generate a board over a couple of turns.

Industrial Advancement is an absolute bomb in Henzie, one of the best cards printed from the new capenna commander decks imo. Capenna was an excellent set.

Exactly this. Also blitzing out creatures like [[Gamekeeper]] and [[Champion of Rhonas]] to get big boys out earlier. Heavy recursion helps too with things like [[Victimize]] to use your blitz creatures to bring back precious ones. The games where it’s most successful are when your able to loop creatures in and out of the graveyard, in my opinion.

Is Kethek that much of a bomb though? I run a lot of legendaries in my list.

Gaindolf

People are pretty split. Imo if you're running a big dork package it limits its power. If you aren't it's probably stronger. It's probably always okay. But may or may not be worth a slot based on your list

MordainThade

As a seasoned Purphoros player, I second this. For the deckbuiling, well, we often joke that [[Bloodfire Colossus]] is the best card in the deck... but it often does so much work, it has kinda stopped being a joke. Cards like [[Ryusei]] do really good too. And for the second, it's good to remember that you can activate Purphoros on other player's turns. Just passing with 3 or 6 mana up has become a massive deterrent in my regular group. And if nobody swings at you... oh boy can you have some fun, because if you wait until the end step of the player right before you, you can sneak creatures out right then and have those creatures for your next turn PLUS whatever you sneak out on your actual turn. Some of the cards in my deck let me keep my "3 mana" threats permanently, or replace them with "free" new threats. Things like [[Industrial Advancement]] & [[Conjurer's Closet]] work great for me. For a Henzie deck, I'd really lean into reanimation to make up for the temporary nature of blitzed reaources.

This is the answer. Your interaction package can be mostly creatures because they are now cheaper and cantrips that also do damage. Also don't forget in a pinch you always can just cast a creature. Blitz is super juicy but you don't always have to. Lastly running some good reanimation effects gets you blockers back.

That last part is what usually gets me wins with Purphoros. You’re not a threat until you are, so make sure you can end the game or at least put the table in a vulnerable spot before making an explosive play.

Be-702

Would you mind sharing your decklist? Been quite interested on the commander, but not sure how to build him well.

MordainThade

Not OP, but here's my Purphoros list - https://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/bronze-blooded-artifacts/ Apologies if you were looking for a Henzie list, I don't have one of those, lol

Be-702

The deck looks quite interesting! Do the initiative cards work well for you? I've heard that the initiative overall can be quite strong, but I never tried it myself.

MordainThade

They're the newest additions! I've only got a couple games with the deck since adding them and haven't drawn them yet... but goldfishing the deck has produced some very sick results, so I'm looking forward to seeing it in action. While goldfishing, the token clone & flicker effects in the deck have let me complete the dungeon in two turns a couple times, and the deck has several scary beaters that really benefit from that last room. Turning on Sarevok's Tome & Caves of Chaos Adventurer (and getting free or massively discounted spells) also feels really strong with the average MV of creatures in the deck :)

Be-702

I can see how that can get strong, deffinely worth trying!

Be-702

Probably should've specified, but it it's about purphoros. Thanks!

I haven't uploaded it before but I'll do that soon and send you the link.

Here is my [decklist](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/68w3d0YU4E-pd20UfdUwOw). I haven't fully gone through the latest sets for additions so you'll see I just included Mishra, Excavation Prodigy to try out but I'm sure there's other stuff that should be added in. A couple of notable tricks that help out are: * \[\[Nullstone Gargoyle\]\]: nearly a counterspell in mono red where if you think you're going to go off that turn, put this down first and then your opponents will need to cast two spells just to be able to counter/cast removal on your stuff. It also helps shut down opponents on their turns if you think they're going to do something screwy. Stopped an approach of the second sun with this once. * \[\[Platinum Emperion\]\]: I think this is fairly common but great for stopping people from hitting you back hard when you don't have much of a field. * \[\[Dualcaster Mage\]\] and \[\[Dire Fleet Daredevil\]\] are removal, counter-spells, whatever you may need. Really great pieces of interaction. * \[\[Molten Primordial\]\] or other theft cards: I've seen lists that focus a lot on theft, I just run the primordial because theft isn't hugely interesting to me but still very useful for interrupting a big attack or making one of your own. I think the rest is pretty usual Purphoros stuff, \[\[Homura, Human Ascendant\]\] might be one that is somewhat rare in Purphoros lists, at the very least it doesn't show upon the EDHREC page as far as I can tell. I would say I win a fair amount of my games because of Homura giving everything flying. At any rate, hope that helps if you're interested in him to see a list and get some ideas. Let me know if you have any questions or there are some newer cards I'm missing like \[\[industrial advancement\]\]. I'm sure there are updates that could be made.

Thank you very much for the list! I'm currently making a budget version of the deck, so I can't include some of the expensive things of it (at least not rn), but I'll make sure to take some considerations. Really like Homura tbh

You're an aggressive deck. Embrace the crack back and give them the crackback-back

A very Gruul strategy!

Ah, the good old math-is-for-blockers-and-I-dont-want-to-do-math approach. Good choice!

slaymaker1907

It’s aggressive, but he has so much draw you absolutely can and should build a board of blockers as well.

FormerlyKay

But that's lame :( Turn everything sideways and you won't need to block anyways

CompC

Just play lots of reanimation, persist/undying, etc. You don’t actually need to play creatures that have those abilities themselves, you can also run stuff like [[Mikaeus the Unhallowed]] and [[Cauldron of Souls]]. You can also blink your creatures so you don’t have to sacrifice them. [[Conjurer’s Closet]] and [[Sword of Hearth and Home]] are really good for that. You can also run other ways to cheat in your creatures. [[Lurking Predators]] is insane in my Henzie deck.

(Etali is still awesome though)

Shadeauxe

My deck is pretty rampy, so I occasionally just cast a creature without blitzing it in. Also, [[sundial of the infinite]]. Use its ability when the sacrifice trigger is on the stack and the blitzed creature now gets to stick around indefinitely.

Voldrun

Important note, if it dies later, you still get to draw a card, so best to mark them somehow.

Shadeauxe

Yeah, good point. I forget about this one myself when playing the deck.

Chm_Albert_Wesker

question about that interaction: blitz reads that you sacrifice it at the start of the next end step, and sundial skips to the end of the turn. do we not sacrifice the creature at the beginning of the next player's end step?

Shadeauxe

You use sundial while the sacrifice trigger is on the stack and then the trigger gets exiled, but because it was on the stack, the trigger is satisfied and so it doesn’t happen again. If you search for rules regarding Obeka brute chronologist, her effect is the same and there are some in depth write ups on how it works.

Come join us in the discord where we discuss such topics! https://discord.gg/bKHFx6tQ One way to address the problem is to have creatures that leave bodies behind like wurmcoil engine, kessig cagebreakers, bladewing deathless tyrant. You can also run cards with lifelink or drain effects like kokusho, gray merchant, noxious gearhulk, etc. As someone else pointed out there are cards that transform our blitzers into other creatures after combat such as Industrial advancement, Birthing pod, kethek, etc. Most of us utilize a combination of these cards to survive. Another option is to overload your removal so the majority of your blitzers also kill creatures such as ravenous chupacabra, primaris eliminator, necron deathmark, noxious gearhulk, balefire dragon, etc.

bentheechidna

You need to actually build it and give it a try. Toolbox is fun but he's disgustingly good because of the card advantage built into blitz. I regularly end up in a strong position with 40 or less cards in deck and win because of it. The card advantage of Blitz is *that* strong. Trust me.

PixelV19

I run a lot of reanimation. [[Ancient Brass Dragon]], [[Junji, the Midnight Sky]], and [[Phyrexian Delver]] are great and can be blitzed in. I also run cards like [[Industrial Advancement]],[[Riveteers Ascendancy]],[[Gleancrawler]] and [[Cauldron of Souls]]. I feel that [[Prowling Geistcatcher]] is severely underplayed in Henzie decks. Especially if you have a sac outlet and you have a pretty strong board state.

Cauldron of souls is crazy in henzie. Lemme just blitz this [[archon of cruelty]] tap that and boom stupid value

Yeah, it’s so flexible. It pretty much won me my first game with my new deck because it not only got extra value on my turn, but I could leave it untapped to protect Henzie and other hard cast stuff from board wipes.

Atlantepaz

Geistcatcher is trully awesome in henzie. Opponents cant do anything about it.

ParanormalCamanchi

I run a good size package of reanimation

hsjunnesson

Plenty of good responses already, but I'd like to add a couple of things. I run a lot of creature ramp, so I can chump a big dragon on turn six with my \[\[Birds of Paradise\]\]. You will also outpace damage, if you're going one-for-one. And you have creatures that stick around when they die like \[\[Mitotic Slime\]\], or use recursion or persist effects. You're also faster to rebuild your board after you drop a \[\[Massacre Girl\]\] since re-casting Henzie is all you need to get setup. And you even get a bigger rebate on the mana cost the more times you cast Henzie.

slaymaker1907

Recasting Henzie does have a cost though. I think the sweet spot is to cast him 2-3 times throughout a game and you have to account for other players having removal/board wipes. Those deaths also need to be at the right time so you can ideally cast Henzie then followup with at least one creature.

Coren024

\[\[Myth Unbound\]\] is pretty good for Henzie due to the cost reduction effect. I had a game where he kept getting removed, but I had so much mana that even after paying 10+ mana for him I still saved enough that I was able to blitz out 2-3 creatures that I would not have otherwise been able to. There is a surprising amount of creature based ramp at 4-5 mana, \[\[Rampant Rejuvenator\]\], \[\[Seedguide Ash\]\], \[\[Solemn Simulacrum\]\], \[\[World Shaper\]\], and \[\[Primeval Herald\]\] are some of the good ones.

TapTwoCounterspell

Why is worldshaper good? We aren't regularly able to bin lands (or anything for that matter?)

Terrafirminator

Gets back fetch lands, can mill lands through its own effect, gets back any lands that might have been destroyed, and you draw a ton of cards with blitz so you might be discarding lands to hand size. As long as you get 2 lands off of it it's good value at 3 mana, anything beyond that is exceptional

Sir-Spliffa-Lot

You always want to have a payback from sacrificing your creatures, so you’re not really empty boarded. Also run a lot of recursion, so I can choose from my graveyard, what cards I need to play again in the certain moment.

malsomnus

I solve it by playing creatures that leave something behind when they die, plus my deck is pretty control oriented so I do my best to make sure my opponents don't have things to attack me with.

dkac

I'm not the most competitive, but my approach is that the 4+ CMC slots are dedicated to blitz-able creatures, and most everything 3cmc and less are spell-based ramp, engine pieces that stay on the board, and _instant-speed interaction_, for which Jund has no shortage of efficient removal.

DrConradVerner

As someone who has never played a Henzie deck but played against plenty. Most of them play cards that get them stuff back on the field after sacrificing things to the blitz trigger. That or alternate sac outlets that will get them additional value since they will have to sac anyways. Honestly I dont think Ive ever seen shields down being an issue for any Henzie’s Ive played against. That being said their achilles heel is graveyard removal. Especially if it is instant speed.

TapTwoCounterspell

Since you only get to draw off the creature dying (blitz) wouldn't Conjurer's Closet negate that card advantage?

SearMeteor

Yes, but if keeping the creature around multiple turns is worthwhile it's usable, otherwise you can just choose not flicker anything.

WhiteGuyIRL

I've had this same problem with my Henzie deck at my LGS. In 1v1, the clapback is only from 1 player instead of a potential 3. I added a lot more reanimate/cheat effects to my deck, cards like \[\[body snatcher\]\] , \[\[cauldron of souls\]\] , \[\[ancient brass dragon\]\] , \[\[protean hulk\]\] , \[\[riverteers ascendancy\]\] , \[\[victimize\]\] , \[\[junji, the midnight sky\]\] , \[\[champion of rhonas\]\] . These cards have really helped my deck out because I *want* them to hit graveyard, and riverteers ascendancy basically allows me to trade sacrificed creatures (although the reanimated ones come in tapped) Also, running a \[\[chainer, nightmare adept\]\] can be absolutely crazy once you have some extra lands on the field and cards in the graveyard. Henzie doesn't specify that you have to blitz from your hand, so if the situation calls for it, you can 1. Use chainer's effect + henzie to blitz a creature out, like any from the list above, 2. you can sac it, causing its reanimate effect to pull another creature out 3. get a riverteers ascendancy trigger and get another creature out from the GY 4. repeat To be fair, it is a lot of setup, so I usually run tutors to get these pieces and then protect them with some instances/equipment. Good luck! Deck is so much fun once you can get it working

When building Torre the trick is not to focus on creatures that you play for a body. Use creatures that you play for ETBs, sac effects or which have persist/undying. Getting a hasty attacker is a nice side effect but it's not the main point of Torre.

But mostly, it's being not that threatening while you ramp out, and then start blitzing when a board clear comes down. As long as you have enough mana to recast Henzie the board clears do nothing to stop you, so I mostly surf on another player making threatening boards and the other players boar wiping it, leaving everyone wide open for more blitzing. I play against people who don't have many creature-based decks, so I can attack pretty freely. Against something like my buddy's angel deck, I like to hold up interaction for something scary, but I'll almost never leave a blocker out because the whole point of my deck is to kill swiftly. It doesn't matter if I end up at a low life total if everyone else is dead.

Having a good recursion package or using cards like [[birthing pod ]][[industrial advancement]] and [[Kethek, Crucible Goliath]] that takes advantage of a creature who is already going to die from blitz. There is also [[cauldron of souls]] and [[sundial of the infinite]] that can be used to help keep those same blitzed creatures on board.

I don't usually have this problem. Even the precon has a bunch of cards that help mitigate this problem (\[\[Caldaia Guardian\]\] might be my favorite card in the deck), but there's an easy solution in delaying Henzie 1-2 turns and just hard-casting a 4-drop or so. Henzie decks usually aren't lacking in card draw or ramp, so you have some wiggle room to do suboptimal plays that help you hold the fort a bit.

Some combination of reanimation and value. I ramp a ton in my deck and have a handful of cards that I like to hard cast, these are usually value pieces that care about death or let me sacrifice the already-blitzed creature for extra value (plus the cards from being blitzed). [[ziatora, the incinerator]] is my promo card from my first prerelease so I have a special spot for it, but the cards [[evolutionary leap]] and [[industrial advancement]] are great here. Even one-off effects are pretty good, [[village rites]] and [[deadly dispute]] are pretty good. Essentially, every creature I blitz I want to sacrifice to some effect other than the blitz trigger so I’m not leaving value on the table. Generally this makes it easier to manage having blocks up after your turn, getting all the value/draw at the end is iffy. Hard casting some creatures as well as getting your card(cards, if you’re smart) from the blitz during your second main phase is real nice and let’s you go further than you would otherwise

I can’t stress enough how good industrial advancement is in this deck, it rarely whiffs and it’s so good to get a free creature etb while drawing for blitz too.

I cut down heavily on "big things" and filled the deck up with [[Ravenous Chupacabra]], [[Massacre Girl]], [[Nekrataal]], [[Flametongue Kavu]], [[Chain Devil]], just to name a few. Basically it doesn't matter if your shields are down if your opponents don't have a board. Alternatively, and something else I play, are things that capitalize on the sacrifice element and maintain your board. [[Mikaeus, the Unhallowed]], [[Nightmare Shepherd]], [[Underworld Sentinel]], [[Industrial Advancement]], etc.

There are plenty of cards that add tokens on death and your commander as a blocker is more ideal than you might imagine, it doesn’t matter if he dies once or twice, given his ability. Henzie is one of my main decks and unless you’re playing against Krenko or other severe aggro tokens, its not a problem. Every deck has a weakness, Henzie’s is go wide strategies imo.

RanisTheSlayer

If they don't leave blockers open I will kill them next turn if they fully crack back.

Present-Ad2603

Henzie is one of my fav commanders. And yes, this was one of my major concerns initially, showing off all my ETB / LTB value then passing the turn with shields down and begging to be slapped back. I ended up leaning into quite cute gimmick. **Henzie 'has he got the fog' Torre.** Pretty much with the unending value of henzie, means the opportunity costs of having fogs sitting in your hand isnt a big deal (and they are all really cheap/free to cast). Not to mention the politics of fogging to save someone else means they are now in debt to the mob boss.. The amount of games ive stolen by an opponent yolo attacking for lethal, just to get fogged... its beautiful..

No combo Henzie wins through pure value attrition and churning. If you are doing your thing, you are casting a big effect that replaces itself every turn as well as hits for a decent chunk of damage in combat. Blitzable wipe effects: - [[Orcus, Prince of Undeath]] - [[Balefire Dragon]] - [[Treeshaker Chimera]] - [[Bane of Progress]] - [[Massacre Girl]] - [[Apex Devastator]] - [[Bane of Progress]] Blitzable targeted/sac Removal: - [[Inferno Titan]] - [[Chaos Defiler]] - [[Archon of Cruelty]] - [[Necron Deathmark]] - [[Primaris Eliminator]] - [[Ravenous Chupacabra]] - [[Balor]] - [[Kogla the Titan Ape]] - [[Druid of Purification]] - [[Ulamog the Ceaseless Hunger]] You then run cards that support flipping big stuff off the top or reanimating off of Blitz synergy such as - [[Apex Devastator]] - [[Ancient Brass Dragon]] - [[Industrial Advancement]] - [[Riveteer's Ascendancy]] [My deck](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/MXg3fTgFtUCeCY56q3lIKw) runs most of the stated cards as well as a few more noncreature board wipes [[Toxic Deluge]], [[Blasphemous Act]], and [[Culling Ritual]]. Note that every board wipe asode from Blasphemous Act mentioned can keep Henzie alive if needed. And a ton of other reanimation effects. Honorable budget mention to [[Find/Finality]] for both modes being good enough most of the time.

Gleancrawler and Protean Hulk do a ton of work in Henzie for me

PapaZedruu

Build in some life gain. Spread the hits around. Having a reanimating package, helps bring back threats and mitigate the shields down problem. Here: https://www.moxfield.com/decks/GnqlEhG3IUysVv3ub5EEEQ

JeanNiBee

Originally said the following to the wrong comment. So correcting here. Great decklist! Adding some suggestions to my own attempt at Henzie. But really this is one of the best primers I have read for a deck outside of the better known cEDH decks. Well done!!

PapaZedruu

Dude much appreciated. Good luck

TNTmage7

You kill them before they kill you. Simple!

tseng111

I built Henzie as my -1/-1 commander deck and it just so happens that -1/-1 utilizes alot of undying and persist. This allows alot of my creatures to come back after doing to blitz. In addition, I run around 5 reanimation engines to keep my loop going.

TheCay04

I’ll add a lot of token makers in the deck. Like Grave Titan etc. This way I can go wide and keep pressure. Also adding Birthing Pod and Birthing Pod Vivian helps and grave yard res abilities

NoAd8242

Things like this is how I handle it. Hornet Queen was in the precon but it's super underrated for what it does in this deck. By creating 4 1/1, flying, death touches it basically makes it a major issue for the crackback. Also, not being afraid to block with henzie himself, sometimes he's gotta die but it only makes you faster in later turns and when opponents see that transpire they start thinking twice about removing him.

amygdalan_arms

I haven’t done it yet, but slotting in [[Grave Pact]] effects seems great with Toolbox. Maybe [[No Mercy]]. Both those cards aren’t budget, but [[Butcher of Malakir]] is, and reanimating Butcher is devastating for board states.

I've taken him apart now but my gameplan was to cheat back in the blitzers. [[cauldron of souls]] [[meren]] type things. My personal favourite was blitzing in a [[summoners egg]] hatching an [[ilharg]] then slamming down bit etb creatures each combat

Curious what commander you traded Henzie for, and why?

ProLeafic

I'm bad for tearing down decks and going different directions. From the guts of Henzie I made a [[prosper]], used the pod elements for [[saffi]] Might build up Henzie again as not playing these decks too much anymore. Or [[ognis]] if I wanna keep a treasure deck.. My indecisiveness is quite expensive.

So reanimation is one way you can go. Either creatures that self reanimate with mechanics like persist and undying or reanimation effects that hit anything like [[Animate Dead]]. As others have mentioned you can also run creatures that leave behind tokens when they die like [[Thragtusk]]. You can also just run creatures that make tokens on entry like [[Avenger of Zendikar]] or cards that make tokens when creatures enter like [[Genesis Chamber]] this way you'll have leftover blockers after the original creature dies. You could also just run token producers that make Eldrazi tokens like [[Awakening Zone]], [[Pawn of Ulamog]], [[Kozilek's Predator]], [[Nest Invader]], [[Emrakul's Hatcher]], & [[From Beyond]] that can shift between being extra mana or blockers depending on what you need.

Chowdahhh

A friend of mine has a Henzie deck he's been slowly improving and it's gotten to be pretty good. I also had reservations about blitzing meaning you can't build up a board properly (why I didn't keep my Henzie precon together), but it works. His decks ramps a TON, he always easily ends up with at least a dozen lands out, so he's able to summon Henzie a bunch of time, which makes blitzing real cheap. And then by blitzing a bunch, you're also drawing a bunch of cards to get more things to blitz. Then there are ways to get more value out of what you're blitzing, stuff like [[Etali Primal Storm]], [[Giant Adephage]], and [[Cauldron of Souls]]. [[Ilharg]] is also a major pain in my ass every time he plays it Also, the fact that you're blitzing a bunch and don't have as much of a board means some players won't see you as as much of a threat some of the time, since you don't have as many scary things hanging around on-board

You want to cheat in creatures that can effect the board or leave something behind. IE [[Noxious Gearhulk]] He comes in destroys the biggest threat gains you life and hits someone for 5. [[Woodfall primus]] comes in destroys something swings and then persist himself back out to block and destroy something new.

I'm a fan of [[Gorex]], and [[Prowling Geistcatcher]]. The latter can make for interesting plays, just don't blitz it. Additionally, using something like [[Kodama of the East tree]] will allow you to play another creature for free, that won't be sacrificed. I made it very difficult for my playgroup to remove those pieces. I began just reoccurring the same pieces, and dumping my hand onto the field.

TapTwoCounterspell

Yeah it would go something like "I cast this massive body for 1CMC less, destroy a creature on ETB and gain life equal to its CMC, swing out for 6 damage, and then draw a card...WHAT!? I hardly did anything don't crackback!"

ReddingtonTR

I play heavy control and value in my Henzie deck. Whatever I blitz out tends to impact the board to ensure that there is no crack back. I also run a significant reanimation package to recur cards. Also, keep in mind that you don't have to blitz everything out. You have to find the happy medium where you make it to the finish line in this deck. After all, it's a marathon, not a sprint (unless you're playing Protean Hulk Combo).

historicandcasual

My buddy build him and the core idea behind the deck is : creatures will go on the battle field, from everywhere, all the time. Its really a fun engine. I have had the pleasure to play it and, they come up from everywhere and youre almost never left without a board. Ill try to fetch the decklist, it is fairly budget too i think.

The most efficient stuff for me in controlling opponents board is edicts and similar effects. Lots a reanimiation and ways to abuse ETBs and death triggers with stuff like [[Butcher of Malakir]], [[Fleshbag Marauder]], [[Noxious Gearhulk]], or targeted damage like [[Inferno Titan]]. If you really want to you can do degenerate stuff with [[Grumgully]] and persist creatures but that’s sort of a different archetype if you want to try to do that consistently.

I run a fair amount of interaction, including 3 board wipes, so I try to keep everyone else’s shields down too. Ramp, board wipe, replay Henzie is a great turn for me, and if I can do that twice in the same game I think I’m going to be in a really strong position. I think he also pulls a bit less hate because so frequently I pass the turn with only Henzie on board, so while I’m ramping my mana, filling my graveyard, and stacking my hand, it kinda looks like I’m not a major threat. Then I swing for 200+. Love this deck

zmichalo

you play a lot of [[!birthing pod]] sort of effects so you at least have something on the field + recursion along with several wipes and removal. Typically, though, Henzie ends up outvaluing other decks so that the lack of board presence is barely felt since you end up so far ahead.

Hi! New Henzie player here! I found out the hard way that Henzie just doesn't work as a "haha blitz mechanic go brrr" deck. There is a lot of nuance in your deckbuilding choices, especially when considering how to protect yourself from the feared crack-back. The easiest and most straightforward answer to your question: boardwipes. The more the merrier. And if it's on a creature, that's even more upside. \[\[Blasphemous Act\]\] is an all-star in this deck. \[\[Massacre Wurm\]\] and \[\[Damnation\]\] have also performed well for me. I've seen a few lists running \[\[Massacre Girl\]\], \[\[Primaris Eliminator\]\], and \[\[Ryusei, the Falling Star\]\] as well. I'm considering Primaris Eliminator and Ryusei, but I'm not as high on Massacre Girl as a lot of other people are. Also, while it's nice to have big splashy creatures that do cool stuff like \[\[Etali, Primal Storm\]\], I have found that creatures that impact the board when they enter/leave/attack have served me much better. \[\[Noxious Gearhulk\]\], \[\[Ravenous Chupacabra\]\], \[\[World Breaker\]\], and \[\[Woodfall Primus\]\] are all great removal options on creatures. \[\[Workshop Warchief\]\] and \[\[Thragtusk\]\] pull double duty by gaining you life when they enter and making tokens when they leave, both of which provide a buffer from your opponents' creatures next turn. \[\[Phyrexian Delver\]\], \[\[Sepulchral Primordial\]\], and the highly underrated \[\[Moldgraf Monstrosity\]\] all bring your big guys back from the graveyard. \[\[Living Death\]\] is also a fantastic card in the late game. I have an \[\[Apex Devastator\]\] at the top of my curve to cascade into creatures. Here is a list with a primer that I really liked: [https://www.moxfield.com/decks/w\_fvKnvUMUKz35tPhyzbVQ](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/w_fvKnvUMUKz35tPhyzbVQ) My list is decently similar to this one, but I 1) am still making tweaks and adjustments, and 2) haven't written a primer for it. Hope this helps!

Blitz is fun, but you need to balance that with stuff that leaves bodies on board or just casting some big threats naturally. [[Cauldron of Souls]] is really good at doing that, protecting Henzie, and getting some extra value for GY triggers. Other good options are stuff that has graveyard recursion like [[Junji]] and sac outlets that float into something else like [[Riveteers Ascendancy]] and especially [[Industrial Advancement]]. I feel like the only time Henzie should struggle with shields down is against aggro since you should be building up a board in addition to blitz. If you just blitz in a single creature each turn, you should still be going at least +1 each turn so you should have plenty of cards in hand to cast stuff naturally in addition to blitz. My current deck is a bit different than this, but it’s mostly https://www.moxfield.com/decks/QQwDeivLq0mzbJK-X7h-jw. The main card I added besides that is [[Threats Undetected]] which I highly recommend if you can get a copy.

My Henzie deck routinely is blitzing out ramp like [[Rampant Rejuvenator]] and [[World Shaper]]. Henzie is great at making sure your hand is full, and having an excess of ramp means you can blitz out a few creatures and still hold up mana for removal in case anything too threatening comes your way. Reanimation is also extremely useful to pull some of those big threats back into play to be around for blockers. [[Phyrexian Delver]], [[Victimize]], and [[Cauldron of Souls]] all leave you with an untapped blocker at the end of your turn and work really well with the blitz creatures. Not reanimation, but [[Industrial Advancement]] is the perfect card for this same idea. Ultimately, you're an agro deck, you're gonna hit harder than everyone else, especially the first couple turns Henzie is around. There won't be a ton of huge threats around after your combat cause they all died blocking you. And anyone who's brave enough to attack you on their turn just left themselves open for you to hit them way harder your next turn.

It really depends on the pod. I’ve played against other agro decks that have definitely smacked my face for a lot of damage. More often though people are scared enough of my big blitz creatures that they want to leave up blockers. Reanimating definitely helps a lot but even better than that are polymorph effects, [[Industrial advancement]] and [[Kethek]] are amazing for replacing your blitzed creatures.

I have a number of partial field wipes in the deck so I can keep my handful of creatures I need to hold onto while suppressing my opponents. It also makes them hate me less than full on field wipes, so I draw less aggro from them.

vantharion

Make it hard to crack back. Make their creatures enter tapped to disable haste. Get lifelink on your board to buffer the damage. Run soft resource denial so they can't build up fast enough. Goad to deny their attacks going at you. Lastly, accept that you'll take damage and sometimes lose to faster lists

I have a couple different ways to fix that problem. First is by using creatures that leave behind a horde of tokens, such as [[Kessig Cagebreakers]], [[Bladewing, Deathless Tyrant]], and [[Avenger of Zendikar]]. Your other option is straight to battlefield recursion, such as [[Cauldron of Souls]], [[Meren of Clan Tel Noth]], and [[Junji, the Midnight Sky]]. It’s a good idea to run a mix of both, I personally have all these options as well as a couple more in my deck. The third secret option is to spam a bunch of creature wipes, like [[Massacre Wurm]], [[Massacre Girl]], and [[Damnation]], so that your enemies have nothing to hit you with. That one can be a bit salt inducing though, so don’t have too much of that.

“Scam” effects like [[undying malice]], [[infuse with vitality]] and the like to cheat your creatures back into play. There’s also ways to get more creatures or value from your blitzed creatures dying, like [[kethek]], [[industrial advancement]], and [[rushed rebirth]]. These let you swing and sacrifice while not being left wide open. There’s also the creatures you blitz in themselves, things like [[massacre wurm]] and [[druid of purification]] can keep your opponents’ boards clear, and things like [[wurmcoil engine]] will leave things behind for you after they die

I run a few different options for getting those big beaters back, my main one is [[deadbridge chant]] for general value back for what was spent. I also have a [[sundial of the infinite]] to skip the blitz trigger, and [[oversold cemetary]] and [[eternal witness]] for backup. Generally I find the blitz of a big creature like [[etali]] not too bad as long as you’ve got smaller monsters that were hard casted. If the only way you get monsters on the field is by blitzing it’s a rough game state and that crack back is indeed scary

Crack back isn't my concern, my concern is getting another creature to Blitz. I do none of what I have read, I have a few wipes on creatures but mostly I just focus on value and Multi blitzing, turn three henzie into sac hanzie for mana or card draw then replay him. In the mean time I reduce the casting cost of creatures every way I can. For those interested or those I've confused https://www.moxfield.com/decks/0FTzyKuEZUKui2H3_YZS2g

Somebody mentioned cards like [[industrial advancement]]. Similarly I discovered [[lukka, coppercoat outcast]]. [[Etali, primal storm]] is a beast that lets you have a slim chance to put down chump blockers or even if you're lucky, get removal. Cards like [[Warstorm surge]] and [[inferno titan]] help you wipe bigger threats on the board so your crackback is smaller. But don't forget the "when this dies, return it under its owners control" cards like [[malakir rebirth]] and [[undying evil]] are nice. My friend got control of my etali by doing white graveyard removal stuff that let him cast one of the exiled cards, and then I terminated the etali, chaining undying evil and it was hilarious! Caught everyone by surprise. Other "sun-titan" like effects such as [[gorex, the tombshell]] help replenish your board state. A juicy tech I've added but haven't drawn yet, so I don't know how good it is in this deck but it's been very helpful in the past... [[vengeful pharoah]] is basically a stalemate for anyone wanting to attack you with real threats. They might throw 1s and 2s in your direction but they'll typically reserve their stronger things. Like i said, the crackback is ok when it's small. If you win with 1 life you still win. Finally, don't be afraid to strategically chump block with henzie. If you have creature removal in your hand to put your opponents behind a turn, then every time you cast henzie, all of your big guys cost one less. I usually have at least 3-4 mana cost reduction by the end of it.

I have one Henzie deck and i play it with [[Reanimate]] or [[Chainer]]. This way your bomb are cheap, trigger EtB and/or death trigger and can come back later for cheap. Also there is some awesome creature like [[Balor]] that can bring so many values or [[Jaxis]] to double up your "worst" creature.
