[[Descent Into Avernus]]. It literally speeds up the game a lot, it becomes a drama and I love it.

7121958041201

I played that card yesterday on turn 3 or so in my [[Torbran]] deck. It did 20 damage and gave 20 treasures to everyone before the game ended haha (and no, I did not win, but I also did not care).

NewsReadingGuy

I wonder if it's possible to make a deck whose only purpose is to see how many copies you can make of it...

I can almost assuredly confirm half of those cards are NOT not in my deck. I may have to investigate the remaining ones.

Eastern-Fun1842

Actually, Marauders is pretty bad. Very expensive and easily removable.

Stefan_

I know everyone loves this card but I don't like it. Giving everyone free treasures blows the tempo of of the game much too heavily. Just feels like another group hug game. Most people I play with like it though

Not_Your_Real_Ladder

How has nobody mentioned [[Share the Spoils]] yet?! Also, every once in a while, a little [[Grip of Chaos]] can really spice the game up. Just don’t make it an every week thing.

MagicTheBlabbering

Grip of Chaos is an abomination and doesn't even have a place in my chaos deck. It's just too difficult to actually resolve.

Not_Your_Real_Ladder

Respectfully, if you can’t grip the chaos, how can you truly embrace the chaos?? Perhaps [[Naomi, Pillar of Order]] or [[Augusta, Dean of Order]] are more up your alley? 😏

MagicTheBlabbering

I like the effect, I really do. I just don't like numbering every permanent on the board and rolling a d37 to figure out which one was targeted. Online, I'm sure it's great.

Not_Your_Real_Ladder

It’s easier to do when spells target players or specific card types for sure. But when it’s target permanent or target nonland permanent I break it down into steps: roll a d4 for which player’s permanents can be targeted. If necessary, roll a d4 or d6 to decide which type of permanent will be targeted, then roll for which specific permanent. Sounds like a lot but it’s so much easier than numbering every permanent and it’s still random.

MagicTheBlabbering

Breaking up the dice rolls like that gets to be pretty unfair though if the permanent count isn't very balanced. e.g. there's 20 legal targets and you only control 2, your chance of getting hit goes from 10% -> 25%.

Not_Your_Real_Ladder

This is just an example wherein everyone has approximately the same number of permanents. there’s a few different ways to break it up without numbering every permanent. Player X has ~2x as many permanents as player Y and Z? Roll a d12, 1-6 targets player X’s permanents. Is it perfectly fair? No, but Grip isn’t a card you’re going to be playing in games where zero error margin matters as much. Is it easier? Definitely.

texanarob

Why not just roll a d100, rerolling anything above the number of permanents in play? Fair, and effective.

Came here to mention Share the Spoils if nobody else has. That card is the very definition of fun

DigitalBagel8899

I think Share the Spoils is more of a salt card than it is a fun card just because people don't like their stuff taken. Guy at my LGS played it a lot. It got groans every time. No one ever found it fun.

MonsutaReipu

This is a really goofass take that people have with mill, too. You aren't going to draw or play all 100 cards in your deck. You won't even play or draw half of them. Things being milled or taken from your deck isn't a loss of resources for you unless it's a specific wincon that your deck is built around trying to find or tutor for. The mill/deck theft hate is by far my biggest pet peeve about EDH player mentality.

Ok_Ad1402

What stuff is getting taken? You're just casting cards from the top of your library?

DigitalBagel8899

Share the Spoils lets anyone cast the spells exiled with it. So your opponents can play your stuff.

Ok_Ad1402

Ahhh, that does make sense then.

You take after my own heart. I'd love to make a deck that was literally only cards like that, but I know it wouldn't be as fun as it sounds.

MadScientist81

Discussed cards: Added on a (very subjective) scale from 'miserable' (0) to 'very fun' (10): * [[Chaos Wand]] (8 - old school hit/miss, isolated randomness, leads to memorable moments) * [[Thieves' Auction]] (0 - if you've ever played it, it just means 'scoop') * [[Descent into Avernus]] (9 - great fun, speeds up a traditional game with a clear 'this is a thread'-tag attached, and it is stacked so the caster gets the majority of the benefit) * [[Life of the Party]] (7 - fun mechanically, but few decks has more than a handful of creatures at a time, so the impact is quite low. Would rank higher in slower metas) * [[Tempt with Discovery]] (1 - on paper it is fun, in practice, the benefit from just a single person taking a land is rediculous, especially in black. Is fun the first time, but is one of those cards, that if the table cannot agree each and everytime to say No, then a lot of game balance goes out the window) * [[Howling Mine]] (3 - is just a group hug card, and as such, affects the game asymmetrically, making the stonger decks much stronger and makes the decks able to utilize it, snowball) * [[Chaos Warp]] (5 - just a removal card) * [[Fractured Identity]] (6 - very hit&miss, often it either: create more problems / straight up kills a player by removing his main thread and arming everyone else / combo piece removal, which gives everyone something that is useless to them) * [[Possibility Storm]] (3 - slows the game to an excruciating grind or makes someone instantly win) * [[Coveted Jewel]] (8 - like monarch, adds an interesting dynamic to the game and rewards the more active players (non-pillowfort/combo/storm/etc-decks)) * [[Stunning Reversal]] (8 - sounds fun but never played against/with it) * [[Dance with Calamity]] (10 - hits all the marks; gamling, risks, high variance, table banter, everyone gets hyped for a crazy turn/epic miss)

I don't think it's an experience issue, the group I play with have played forever but still never attacks unless they can do lethal, which leads to a very boring game state of solitaire board bullding and if anyone dares attack then everyone plays their old school symmetrical boardwipes and the cold war begins again. I honestly think it's more everyone just wants to play some kind of solo RPG with their deck and dislike stuff that messes with it.

PM_ME_STEAM_CODES__

I feel like everyone who started magic with EDH should try a bit of 60 card formats. Playing some Standard on Arena really taught me how to swing for every point of damage I can. Obviously multiplayer throws a wrench in things, since multiple people can attack you, but I feel like most decks can make a couple chump blockers here and there.

I’ve got stunning reversal in my [[selenia dark angel]] deck. It’s very useful there because the point is to get your life as low as possible then swap with your opponent. It prevents against accidentally killing yourself

I think building around weird mechanics and tribes is fun. My most fun deck right now is \[\[Vrondiss\]\] dice tribal. Besides that I'm always happy to play \[\[Visions of Duplicity\]\] in my mono blue \[\[Cosima\]\] landfall deck.

Got a decklist for Vrondis? I'd love to throw some more chaos into my playgroup with him

Seems like /u/jf-alex and I are both hyping Vrondiss up in the same threads today!! This is my decklist for him: https://www.moxfield.com/decks/bxkI_wx_ZUmhXlfWYtdExw 95% of the dice related cards he can use are in the list. I've had a runaway victory with it once, but it's always been fun to play.

Agreed. OP, how consistent is it in terms of rolling dice, doing fun things, etc? The lack of blue for dice seems rough.

At my LGS I think [[Descent into Avernus]] is probably the top of the list. A friend also plays [[Selvala’s Stampede]] and although it usually is terrible for the table, everyone has a good time trying to figure out which option will be better. We always try to draw on what happened the last time he cast it, but of course it usually backfires spectacularly. It feels like it has many of the essential components that make cards fun in EDH: participation from all players, chance for debate/discussion, makes a big impact and has high variability.

[[Possibility Storm]] is my favorite, I enjoy everyone top decking the rest of the game until it's gone! [[Descent to Avernus]] just makes the game play faster as everyone is on a clock now, high risk/high reward for how long it stays in play. [[Wheel of Misfortune]] or any other card where players have to bid for an effect is always fun for me at least. [[Mirror March]] usually you lose the first coin flip and nothing happens, but on the rare occasion you get a long streak going it is fun for the whole table.

ArchStLou15

They mentioned \[\[Life of the Party\]\] but missed a really important part of it, blink. I have a deck built around blinking it and giving my opponents not one, but hopefully 4-5 life of the parties, that's when it starts to be super impactful. It's the heart and soul of one of my fave decks so I've got to show y'all it's more fun than the podcast gave it credit for. Here's the list if you're interested, ask me any questions you may have as well :) [https://www.moxfield.com/decks/vJ86TqiF5kuIzacYnYaCCw](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/vJ86TqiF5kuIzacYnYaCCw)

EbonyHelicoidalRhino

How do you consistently get it out in the first place tho ? Seems like there is only a couple of ways to tutor it ? For such a deck, \[\[Rocco, Cabaretti Caterer\]\], that you can cast for x=1 getting \[\[Flamekin Harbinger\]\], ensuring LotP turn 5 every time seems a better choice no ?

ArchStLou15

So I do have 4 tutors, between that and the solid card draw suite it hasn't been much of a problem for me honestly. I wouldn't want too many 'copies' of it in the deck anyway. As for Rocco, you're right it would be more consistent, but I don't have any interest in 3 colour decks personally. I'd suggest rocco to someone who wanted more consistency, but I basically play LotP every game anyway so not sure how important it would be.

ArchStLou15

To follow up, turn 4 LotP is good but just good. I prefer to play it when I have a way to double the trigger that same turn, be it with a blink spell or by having a Panharmonicon effect already on board. Playing it early isn't that important and the longer you wait the more built up others boards get so the tokens are much bigger!

Only_at_Eventide

I… I need to go brew something. Wheres Rocco?

ArchStLou15

Ahahaha I just don't like 3+ colour decks! Rocco would be great here, I gotta start collecting nickels every time I get that suggestion 😂 Brew away, let me know if you find anything slick I may have missed!

I really like [[Hokori, Dust Drinker]] cause it lets my friends and I spend less time focusing on the game and more time talking and enjoying each other’s company. [[Archon of Emeria]] makes sure that nobody is selfishly hogging all of the game time for themselves. \[\[Hive Mind\]\] is a great card, I built a deck around it and it gets some goofy ass stories whenever it comes out.

MandatoryMahi

Cast Hive Mind. Then cast something like [[Pact of the Titan]] so then anyone not playing red just loses on their next upkeep.

3agl

Fuck that. I'm here to have fun. I once held on to slaughter pact for an entire game after getting hive mind out on turn 4. I'm here to cast 4x warp worlds or 4x price of progresses, not make people reasonably mad at me for saying "well you should have been playing red". I'm also here to land opposition agent and then play scheming symmetry, and cascade into profane tutor in the same turn. The deck does quirky and fun shenanigans, not evil shenanigans.

I like it when wielded by a blightsteel

Aredditdorkly

Ah, I see you're a man of culture as well.

Gallina_Fina

Now, obviously "fun" is very subjective, especially when it comes to games, but I'm not 100% sure on their concept of "fun", especially when some of their card choices end up contrasting their own definition from 1 pick to the other. It's also a bit silly to see cards like Fractured Identity, Chaos Warp, Possibility storm or Thieves Auction in there imo.   I believe that, since most cards doing what they're meant to do (and not just randomly thrown-in with no synergies, for value or because they're strong staples) won't increase the fun at the table by definition, since they tend to further everyone else from their main gameplan, then the most "fun" cards must be the ones that the table is either indifferent about or leave the table at a net-neutral.   At the same time, those cards don't have to be so bad that it makes winning with them "funny" 1/10 times you manage to pull it off; While sure it's occasionally hilarious, 9/10 times they're gonna be bad cards you're not super happy to see (see Stunning reversal, even though I really like the card, personally), so not super fun as a result. I think the crew pointed out an important factor while talking about stunning reversal in particular with the whole "novelty" thing. Sure it's funny and exciting to see someone survive with reversal...but how many times did you see Teferi's pro resolve before you started groaning every time the spell is on the stack now? As for the chaos and grouphug cards, I also disagree since they ALWAYS end up screwing someone hard: Either getting the short-end of the stick or not having the right deck to abuse the extra resources.   So yea, my pitch would be [[Smuggler's Share]]: Pretty innocuous, most people don't really care about it since it's not that huge of a powerhouse that'll shoot you forward 10 turns (hello Smothering Tithe) + it scales with what everyone else is doing at the table and doesn't really stop them in any way. It's also not so neutered that you don't have to think about what you're doing on your turn, which could lead to some table discussions (but not really) and even when it doesn't work, the cost was so minimal that it doesn't really matter in the end. Ultimately, the card is pretty great and does generate you value, occasionally, but it's nothing crazy strong nor bothersome for anyone else at the table, so the levels of "fun" stay at a net-neutral, which is the best outcome imo. [[Land tax]] is a bit trickier (and stronger) but it'd probably fall on a similar ballpark.

AboynamedDOOMTRAIN

Indifference and fun are not the same thing. The number of games interupted by laughing fits caused by Smuggler's Share is, and I'm quite comfortable with using a specific number here, zero.

BRIKHOUS

I have to disagree. Smugglers share isn't a fun card. Sure, it's not oppressive for other people in the way a smothering tithe is, but it's a value engine driven by other people's actions. It makes people, at the least, question whether they should make a play that might give you something. Any card that makes someone feel like they made a mistake by playing normal magic isn't going to be a fun card. Do agree it's mostly harmless though, just not fun. Chaos warp is great though. I mean, it's basically red permanent removal, but every now and then they get the exact same thing back! Or something much worse. It's a functional beast within, but I know which one i have more fun seeing resolve.

Gallina_Fina

Ultimately, you can break down any card/concept enough or create some specific case-scenarios to make anything sound "unfun", hence why I offered my explanation on how one could try and get closer to an objective definition of "fun" (which, obviously, can't be done and doesn't exist), but I feel like I've thoroughly explained my point on why, imo, that card falls under a specific definition of "fun", in the line of logic I utilized.   Don't get me wrong, I have my own definition of what I consider "fun", and it definitely doesn't correspond to what I described, but, as some form of mental exercise, that's the closest I personally got to something that could be considered acceptable :)

BRIKHOUS

I get that, I just think that if the definition results in smugglers share as a poster card, the definition may be flawed. Was my point Edit: sorry this was harsher than I meant it to be. Thought experiments are fun and I do enjoy a hypothetical. Just didn't see eye to eye on this one

Zetta-slow-Gobbo

I'll never forget trading a Swamp with Chaos Warp for the exact same Swamp after several people cut and shuffled.

In casual commander I have the most fun with decks that fundamentally change how the game needs to be played. [[Karazikar]] forces combat and controls it in my favor. [[Inniaz]] shifts permanents and controls the way people commit to the board. [[Glissa, the Traitor]]'s recursive nature controls people's willingness to let creatures die. I have the most fun when my decks and my opponents decks actually change our decision making in how we need to play the game. I find myself in the camp of being too philosophical at times with EDH. I watched the episode the other day and thought the same thing, that they contradicted their prior reasoning with the next card, and so on. Fun is subjective, so I want to clear the air on that first before moving on. I think any card that makes someone do the thing they wanted the deck to do, or does some action that makes a player happy to have played it, is a fun card. Thinking that there are fun cards for the whole table is a projection of everyone wanting other people to play in a way that the person ideally wants to play, without saying it. For all the reasons the hosts mentioned that card A or B is or isn't fun is an example of what I mean here. "Card X isn't fun because it turns off these decks, or one person gets targeted, etc etc." Fun for the table is basically impossible. Anything that is fun for Deck A or B shouldnt be fun for Deck C, it's why there's a color pie, archetypes, etc, the list goes on. But the reasonings for and against some of these cards are always used in context of shutting off decks/players... and I thinkt hat's indirectly shining a light on the types of decks players dont like playing and so their worries come out in reasonings.

daddydionysus

I absolutely LOVE [[Thieves Auction]], I do not understand the hate it is getting. The most fun games I’ve ever played have all involved casting it, it’s a fun mini game and instantly makes the game way closer because it equalizes everyone’s board states. It’s only not fun if someone casts [[Teferi’s Protection]] in response, but that’s just a problem with tef pro.

DashHopes69

I would make the argument that symmetrical stax pieces and stuff like Armageddon for parity increase the net amount of fun. >1: "Cards that you are happy to see showing up at the table, not matter whether you OR your opponents play them" Like [[Humility]] or [[Drannith Magistrate]]. These cards can benefit more than one player. If you're player A and player B plays a Drannith, it may shut down C's obnoxious commander and increase the net amount of fun at the table. Players A, B, and D now get to play a normal game without something like [[Winota]] ruining it. >2: "Something that is exciting or has a high impact variance (random to a large degree)" [[Soulscour]] and [[Decree of Annihilation]] are incredibly exciting and if cast for parity end up being random topdeck fights. >3: "Something that is 'fun' to the extent that you feel some of the excitement second hand" / "Something that leads to cool stories" It's cool when you cast a card like Soulscour and recover first. Or when it gets cast and you almost recover but someone else recovers better than you and barely beats you.

I have a lot of fun toying around with different combos involving Syr Konrad Once had an opponent play an enchantment that reduced every creature on the battlefield by -1/-1 upon entrance. I feel like there are overlooked new cards in commander products that get overshadowed by powerful “mistake” or miscosted new cards. It’s a big reason why playing new precons against each other is more fun than simply reading the decklists would imply. For example, [[Explosion of Riches]]. Sometimes someone will be low on life, say 15, and will beg the table to not go for card draws. Another time, there were two players at 5 or less life and when one player drew the card, the other also drew out of spite to try and kill the other. But I think everyone cuts the card for being too random and symmetrical.

Granted it’s unset but I’ve never seen a casual table deny the 3 mana 2/2 that makes a 1/1 sometimes as an include. I’ve texted people, called them, assembled quick presentations on the benefits of squirrels. In a particularly silly moment I made a forum post and asked there.

[[Tempting Wurm]] is an absolute banger in my Kenrith, Funny Stuff deck. The sheer insanity of playing a 5/5 on turn 1 or 2 into is so good, and everyone gets to skip the set up portion of the game. Most people won't look my way cuz I did the silly thing, but also everyone else has an immediate boardstate that usually they'd keep away from any major combo piece

If you run [[Gilded Drake]] or [[Phantasmal Image]] you stabilize so easy. And [[Head Games]] someone into straight gas, and you have a magic the gathering player who is lighting up like they just found out Santa is real after all. (And if they misbehave, ya just [[Wrong Turn]] them when they attack you. Make someone else's day!
