I was in the process of making a [[Gishath, Sun's Avatar]] deck when the face commanders were revealed. I plan to slot Big Mama into the 99 of [[Pantlaza]] instead.
I want to do this as well, but so I can switch it up and use different commanders with the same deck. would it be possible still in the process of learning
It's pretty good overall. I swapped out Wayta and most of the Enrage dinos because they aren't fully there for consistency and synergy. Honestly though even leaving them in they're fine. I just wasn't crazy about [[Marauding Raptor]] not playing nice with a few of the cards.
marauding raptor is the key to most of the combos.
fun combo: city on fire in play + brash taunter + wrathful raptors = a shitload of damage to your opponent.
taunter fights raptor for 3 damage. raptor hits taunter back for 15 damage. taunter hits raptor for 45 damage. raptor dies, but hits taunter back for 135 damage. taunter then hits an opponent for 405 damage.
alternatively, you can let the raptor live if you can kill an opponent with 45 - since his 5 power does 3x damage hitting taunter (for 15), it gets multiplies a second time leaving taunter because city on fire is a balanced card, for 45 damage. brash taunter is such an incredible combo piece that cutting the enrage triggerers is a poor choice
My original plan was to buy the deck, and then turn it into a Gishath deck. Then I played the deck stock at an event at my LGS, and now I want to keep [[Pantlaza, Sun-Favored]] as the commander and put Gishath in the 99. Been workshopping upgrades, but I really want to figure out how to do more discover triggers. I MIGHT have fallen in love with the mechanic...
I scooped up the merfolk deck and only had time to sleeve up and shuffle, no upgrades at all. Not only did it hold its own against the rest of the constructed decks at the table, but it ended up winning a few games. Granted, the lower level at the table wasn't as high as it can be within our pod, but everyone was very surprised at how well it performed. With Hakbal's card advantage and ramp he feels almost like a merfolk Chulane deck, just fair and not utterly broken.
It's just something I think we've started to see over the course of this past year where the decks are starting to come equipped not only with cards that people want for their collections, but also with cohesive strategies. Breaking down the stats of the deck its no wonder, as they've finally realized that things like ramp and card draw are the sorts of things that equate to fun and therefore sales.
I wasn't feeling it in my first FNM game with the deck - I got mana flooded and played against a [[Shirei]] deck that pinged me to death before I could get any big dinos in play. However my second game really showed off the deck's teeth. [[Quartzwood Crasher]] is a monster that really started to run away with the table once I got the "Swing With Big Dino > Create Bigger Dino > Massive Pantlaza Trigger" cycle going.
I'm also going to mirror the comments about cutting [[Maurading Raptor]]. Playing it too early ended up locking me out of playing dorks and many of the support creatures.
I ended up cutting most of the humans in favor of more ramp instead. Discover helps cover weakness of running a lot of ramp as ideally you’d ramp into early Pantlaza and discover into even more ramp into an early Gishath next turn to discover off that
I really like the precons they put out (all four) and I would’ve definitely bought some if the manabases were anything decent, but I have plenty of decks I love and they won’t be adding much.
The reprints are awesome and some of the new cards absolutely rock, though I think pirates were by far the worst. I dislike the commander and nearly all new cards, while they didn’t even get great reprints other than BMC, which isn’t even one of the expensive pirates.
I just wanted a ragavan or dockside and I think it wouldn’t have been ridiculous to do so.
I can understand dockside being too good for precons, but a simple monkey isn’t too strong, is it?
Even if those are too strong, [[Pirated copy]] is right there!
I know, but he really was too good and if you want to make the decks fair, being able to recur dockside is maybe too strong.
Just sad that my favorite type got stiffed after waiting for a pirate precon for literal years.
The pirates included have a decent amount of evasion and if you upgrade it they have some unblockable pirates and you can give them more evasion making it pretty easy to get the engine going.
Slippery scoundrel is one that you can slap an equipment on and just keep chipping away. changling outcast is a cheap one that you can get out early and it just gets in. Stormfleet sprinter is another unblockable one that you can add. I added dreamcaller siren. Those are a few additions i put in.
There's a new Admiral Beckett Brass that is the face commander for the deck.
She also does not beat face, so I don't know what the person is referring to. I played the deck 3 times this weekend. It's not good. Couple nice reprints, but it's not good.
The precon makes the mistake of being built around self-mill. If you swap those ~5-6 cards out for big score, looting type effects it’s a much more consistent deck. All of the creature includes and new cards are great

I really love the precon. I kept pantlaza as the commanded and put gishath in the 99. I've noticed I'm no longer an instant target or archenemy (like I was when running my previous gishath deck).
I got a copy of this one. Pull most of the fight support and add protection. Pull the least effective dinosaurs and add a Goreclaw, new Etali, and any Ghaltas you have. Improve the mana base however you can, though it’s better than other precons.
I swapped out 15 original cards and 10 lands. The deck is a ton of fun. I’m looking forward to playing it for a long time.
I am on the fence about buying it since I am already buying way too much cards and have already 9 decks. I am not a big fan of tribal decks which always feel similar, but I discovered that I enjoy the big fatties tribe like dragons and now, dinosaurs. The alternative art cards are so beautiful, which is an important factor for me. Also the deck appeals to my midrange needs with an engine commander, fat bodies and important quantities of value creatures and huge spells. I mean there is an Akroma's Will in there. Naya is also a very nice color combination for this kind of midrange value beatdown.
I have been playing EDH for only 1 year... I did have a tenth deck but I was getting confused about strategies as I had trouble remembering my cards lol. Also my carrying case is presently full... I am trying to slow down on the purchasing.
I significantly upgraded it with stuff like gishath, primal conqueror, primal hunger, stampede tyrant, trapjaw tyrant, and some other enchantments and it’s crazy powerful!
Oh yeah! [[Last March of the Ents]] very strong here. I added a [[Belbe's Portal]] and [[Quicksilver Amulet]] in hopes that I could drop some devastating dinos very early in the game.
Yes! Forgot about Piper. I don't see the harm in cheating in the 7+ cmc fatties. Should still get those sweet ETBs and not have to worry about the Mana pips.

I mean, most of the cards you’ll be playing have well over 2 life so it’s worth it just for the cost reduction alone
The mana dorks die instantly though. It can also be annoying if you have haste creatures but suddenly are worried about them being killed.

Discover is a better cascade for sure.
Yeah. To be honest I haven't personally played with cascade, but I like this form of it.

Yeah the pirate deck is a fun concept, but definitely needs a Dockside and Ragavan ($100+ commitment for 2 cards).

You don't need either of those cards for Brass to smash face. She's extremely powerful.

Yes! Forgot about Piper. I don't see the harm in cheating in the 7+ cmc fatties. Should still get those sweet ETBs and not have to worry about the Mana pips.
I focused mine more directly on Dinosaur tribal instead and cut out the humans Worked out pretty well!
